Welcome home ... Coco :-)

HAPPY MERDEKA from all of us :-)

Merdeka Tim Sum at Imperial Palace, Klang

Add: 4627-4633, Wisma AMI, Jalan Gambus 2, Taman Desawan, Klang
Tel: +603 3323 1917
Located: Opposite AEON-Jusco Bukit Tinggi Mall, Klang

Was surprised at how the quality of timsum (and how the food was NOT piping hot!) had deteriorated here ... not sure if it was caused by lack of staff or the usual chef on Merdeka Day? It was rather expensive too, by its own standards judging from my many previous visits here, at just over RM$50 for our meal (4 persons).. Wonder if that was caused by Merdeka Day surcharge!!? Inflation perhaps?

Ginseng Chicken - Good!
Fish ball - Average.

Beancurd skin roll - Good
Pai kuat - Didn't try this, dad ate it all!

Brinjal - Poor
Porridge with century egg - Ask dad!

Loh mai kai - Good stuff!
Char siew pao - Very poor

Yeong Lat Chew (Stuffed fish in chilli) - Poor

BMW E63 M6 in Klang

Spotted at a set of traffic lights in Klang ... So darn sweeeeeet! Check out those AC rims as well, and what is likely to be REAL brembo calipers!

Wikipedia
The new BMW M6 concept made its debut at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show. It is based on the BMW E63/E64 6-Series, introduced in 2004.
It shares the same 5.0 L V10 S85 engine and SMG III gearbox with the E60 M5, and produces 507 hp (373 kW) / 384 ft·lbf (521 Nm).
BMW claims it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.6 seconds (0-60 mph: 4.1 s [Road & Track [2/06]) and has an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). With the limiter removed, the top speed can reach 330 km/h (205 mph). [3]
The M6 has the same 'power button' as the M5 which modifies the throttle response. From ignition, the car delivers 399 hp (298 kW), but engaging the button allows the full 500 hp (370 kW) in the US (507hp in Europe). It weighs 3770 lb (1710 kg) thanks to a carbon fibre reinforced plastic roof panel as well as thermoplastic front wings, aluminum doors and bonnet and compound boot lid.
The carbon fiber and other light materials are used in places like the bumpers and roof that are far from the centre of gravity and/or high up, so that they not only reduce the overall weight but improve the handling by reducing, respectively, the moment of inertia and the centre of mass height.

Nero Vivo, Bukit Ceylon / Bukit Bintang KL - Happy Merdeka!

HAPPY MERDEKA everyone!!!

Really large platter of starters .. Mediterranean vegetables etc on one, and Seafood on the other.

Nothing spectacular about the pizza.

Excellent cod ... perfectly pan-friend and seared.

Great lasagna!

The beef was incredible ... Loved the reduction sauce.

Pannacotta ... was rather dissapointing, and not balanced at all. Overwhelmed by the deep dark chocolate sauce.

Gin and Tonic with a splash (and more!) of Cranberry juice.

Prosecco ...

Not limoncello, but similar ... orange cello!
Wikipedia Limoncello is traditionally served chilled as an after dinner digestivo...
There are a number of similar liqueurs produced within and outside of Italy. Some are slight variations, some use lemon juice as well, and some use other citrus fruits. These include Limoncino, Limonello, and Limonetta or even Crema di Limoncello which is made with milk, or milk products, to give a creamy texture. Also common is a liqueur made in the same fashion, but using Mandarin oranges, called Mandarino.

Wasn't a big fan of this rather sharp, RM$170, white wine, a Pinot Grigio Chardonnay.

Friends just hanging out ... and chilling!

Wishing one and all ... HAPPY MERDEKA! Malaysia is 51 today :-)

QTF1 spotted in Klang

Nice '1' plate Sarawak registered Land Rover Freelander TD4 spotted in Klang :-)

Namaste Indian cuisine, Taman Tun Dr Ismail TTDI

Add: NAMASTE INDIAN RESTAURANT, 4 Jalan Datuk Sulaiman, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, KL
Tel: 03-7724 1195
Opening hours: Opened every day, 7am - 11pm

An ol' friend who was back from the UK commented that she didn't see much indian food in my blog ... Hmm, you are right SM! So, we set out to try this family-favourite restaurant of hers, and it didn't dissapoint in the slightest ... Well balanced food (Different from much of the Indian food I was used to i.e. over-powering!), in a quiet (Don't see many patrons here, most of the time!) environment, and generally just a nice place to have a meal!

Their piece de resistance ... wonderful Chicken Briyani. About RM$13-14.

This is where the chicken is ... hidden under the rather large bowl of rice. Tender and beautifully marinated, excellent!

Mama fish curry ... Nice! Again, not overly sour.

I never go to an Indian without having ... Aloo Gobi (Cauliflower with Potatoes). Pretty good too!

Garlic Naan (Just over RM$4) - Nice accompaniment to the food, but I much prefered the briyani rice ... yummm.

SM's cuppa tea, Teh Masalla I think. Thanks for the treat, and for the catch up ... bon voyage :-)

Hyundai H-1 Starex - 11 seater MPV!

Saw this giant on the roads today, near One Utama ... this is the Hyundai H-1 or locally known as the Starex.

paultan.org
Hyundai has just launched the new Hyundai H1 11-seater van at the 2007 Thailand Motor Expo. The Hyundai H1 - also known as the Hyundai Starex in certain markets - is a van that can be configured with either 8 or 11 seats aimed at customers who wish to have a people mover but do not want to spend so much on luxury MPVs.
The Hyundai Starex goes head to head against vehicles such as the Ford Transit, the Volkswagen Transporter and the Mercedes Benz Vito. The Thai model is configured with 11 seats.
There are two engine options available - a 2.5 liter turbocharged intercooled oil burner with 100 PS and 226Nm of torque, a 2.5 liter CRDi turbocharged intercooled oil burner with a variable geometry turbocharger making 170 hp and 392Nm of torque, as well as a 2.4 liter Theta family gasoline engine delivering 170 horsepower and 223Nm of torque.

motortrader.com.my
The pricetag which starts at RM135,533 (including insurance) for the 7-seater may be higher than the locally-assembled models mentioned and it provides an alternative but it would certainly be something that those in the market for a Toyota Estima or Alphard might take a look at too.
For the 7-seat layout, the fourth row is omitted which gives extra space for luggage. Then it is three rows with a 2-3-2 seating arrangement. Hyundai Sime Darby / HSD also has a more customized luxury version of the Starex which can serve as a mobile office with a meeting table, audio system and DVD ICE provided. The cost of this customization is RM37,355 which takes the price up to RM172,888. According to a HSD executive, the customer can specify what is required and there is some flexibility in options. Of course, this also means waiting a bit longer as customization is a one-off exercise.

juliansi.blogspot.com
I believe the ones available locally are equipped with the more frugal diesel engine, this is really a cool niche player in the MPV market, as it is probably the only other car (Besides a strange looking Ssangyong) in its class which can seat > 8 pax. And with customisation options, it makes sense as both a mobile-office as well as a transport vehicle for hotels etc. Not sure about the badging and brand image though, I guess the Mercedes Vito still wins in that respect.

Jenny's car - JEN1111

Nice car plate spotted on this Citroen ... JEN1111 . Her name MUST be Jennifer ... right? :-)

Rufus is a gentle giant! Woof!

"Hi, I'm Rufus!"

Rufus mum was back in town, so I went to visit the both of them!

VW Eos 2.0 TSi on the road

Was rather surprised to see the RM$250K VW EOS on the road today ...

Not many examples of this nice looking car on our roads ... despite its relatively modest price-tag, and all-in-one-nature (Hey, it is a full convertible, targa and coupe rolled into one!) ... Wonder why!

I remember the VW Experience at Bukit Kiara launch fondly :-)

Sup Ayam at Pelita Nasi Kandar, Bukit Tinggi Klang

Not a very large bowl, but dad loves it! Sup Ayam aka Chicken Soup, Mamak style.

Kung Fu Panda (2008) : Prepare for awesomeness!

Source: DVD (Kota Damansara) - English version
It has been out since June '08, and I finally got to enjoy Kung Fu Panda this week ... MAGNIFICENT!

A superb voice-over crew that includes ...
Jack Black ... Po (voice)
Dustin Hoffman ... Shifu (voice)
Angelina Jolie ... Tigress (voice)
Ian McShane ... Tai Lung (voice)
Jackie Chan ... Monkey (voice)
Seth Rogen ... Mantis (voice)
Lucy Liu ... Viper (voice)
David Cross ... Crane (voice)
Randall Duk Kim ... Oogway (voice)
James Hong ... Mr. Ping (voice)

I had always enjoyed Pixar style animated movies such as Toy Story, Incredibles and especially Monsters Inc, as well as Simpsons The Movie but Kung Fu Panda raises the bar even further. Why?
1) Beautiful storyline
2) Incredible CGI / graphics
3) Credible voice-overs that lend itself to the storyline and characters
4) Fantastic storyline
5) Cheeky one-liners and profound (Yes, profound!) thoughts laced throughout the film!

This is a story about a lazy, average, slacker panda, named Po, who happens to be a huggggge (pun intended!) of Kung Fu, but actually works in the family noodle business (What's the secret ingredient!?).
Po gets thrown into the role of fulfilling an ancient prophecy (Who's the dragon warrior, and what will he learn from the Dragon Scroll?) , and studies Kung Fu from Master Shifu along his idols - The legendary Furious Five - Tigress, Crane, Mantis, Viper and Monkey.
Their mission? To defeat the snow leopard Tai Lung !

Just a few of my favourite quotes!!

Po: There is no charge for awesomeness... or attractiveness.

Tai Lung: You... you're just a big... fat... panda!
Po: I'm not a big fat panda. I'm *the* big fat panda.

Tigress: One would think that Master Oogway would choose someone who actually knew kung fu.
Crane: Yeah, or could at least touch his toes. Monkey: Or even see his toes.

and my favourite one ...
Oogway: Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift.
That is why it is called the present.

Monte's, BSC Bangsar - Love the steak!

Add: Lot F112, Level 1, Bangsar Shopping Centre Phase 2, Jalan Maarof, Bangsar, KL
Tel: +603 2094 1112

This is a rather old restaurant ... sieving through google, I found comments about Monte's from as far back as 2002. Any one has any idea when it was opened?

Mushroom soup (RM$13.90) - Looked really nice and chunky
Carrot and Pumpkin soup (RM$8.90) - My choice ... and what a great choice it was. Deep in flavour, and not overly thick. Thanks for the tip, SBF!
I loved the warm bread rolls too ... slurp!

Mixed nachos - Chicken and vegetarian (RM$16.90). Nothing too exciting, but decent nevertheless.

R's choice (Seems she dines here quite frequently, I now know why ... the food here is actually rather good, just becareful what you order ... the soups and steaks are par supremo!) ... Seafood Salad (RM$25.90). SBF said the dressing was good.

Brilliant choice ... a beautifully grilled and healthy Halibut fish steak. Lovely!

My choice ... really well marinated, in a chinese-sort-of-way, Ribeye Steak (RM$52.90). I had asked for medium, and when it arrived, it looked ... Well-done. But it wasn't, just slightly seared and charred on the outside, sealing in all the juices and flavours. Brilliant!

ps - RM$180 for the three of us, or RM$60 per head. Not the cheapest of places, but we enjoyed the food, and quiet ambience.

Glutinous Sweet Corn, BSC Cold Storage

RM$3.99 for corn that is ... uh .. black!
Glutinous sweet corn, found at Cold Storage (Bangsar Shopping Centre). How weird!

Knownyou.com
This new hybrid is a purple-colored glutinous corn. The plant is about 150-180 cm in height. It is vigorous, very tolerant to both heat and cold, and also diseases. It matures about 70 days in Taiwan summer crop, and about 100 days in winter. Very prolific. The ears are large and fat, ready for picking when one third (1/3) of the kernels turn purplish-red. Soft, fine-textured and chewy.

What Happens in Vegas (2008) : Cameron Diaz

Source: DVD (SS2)
Surprisingly enjoyable, and feel the sizzle of the chemistry between two of Hollywood's most beautiful stars!

Cameron Diaz ... Joy McNally
Ashton Kutcher ... Jack Fuller
Lake Bell ... Tipper
Michelle Krusiec ... Chong
Dennis Farina ... Richard Banger
Queen Latifah ... Dr. Twitchell

Not surprisingly, as the title implies, this romantic comedy is set in Las Vegas aka Sin City. It is about a career woman / one who plans her plans (!) Joy McNally (Diaz), and the goofy Jack Fuller (Kuctcher) who meet and get married in Vegas, win 3 million dollars on the slots, and decide to get divorced.
It is then that the judge (Oddly enough, similar to another recent film Big Stan ) decrees that the money is frozen, and that they must remain married for 6 months in order to share the money but only if they prove that they can remain married whilst undergoing counseling sessions. Soon they both learn that if one of them asks to get out of the marriage, the other will get the money.. What do they do? Obviously, they each try to drive the other to want to get out of the marriage!

Couple of memorable quotes ...

Jack Fuller Sr.: You're like a son to me.
Jack Fuller: Dad, I am your son.

Jack Fuller: Richard Banger? So your name is Dick Banger! Dick Banger!
Banger: And yours is Jack? Jack off! Jack off

Chee Chap Chuk (Pork Innards Porridge) - The finest in Penang!

Located: Alongside Sunway Hotel Georgetown, Penang, No. 33, New Lanes, Off MacAlister Road, Penang.

This IS the finest porridge in Penang, and perhaps in the country ... simply delicious. Pork Intestine (and other innards!) porridge, perfectly balanced in taste, with a few slices of char-siew too. The porridge itself is tender, tasty and silky smooth ... GORGEOUS!

One can't miss the stall along this lane ... The Chee Cheong Chook (Pork Intestine Porridge) ingredients is CLEAR for all to see!

A mecca of hawker stalls ... ranging from good to very good!

A had some Leng Chee Kang ala Penang. Someone else chose Sea Coconut...
Kuay Teow Theng Penang style ... which means coagulated pork blood cubes! Yes! Frightening stuff, but some seem to like it, hmmm...
Can't leave Penang without having Popiah!
Ah hah ... Chee Cheong Fun Penang-style, which means it is served with Har Koh (Prawn paste, rather stinky but again it is an aquired taste!).
Hor Chien or Oyster Omelette
A staple dish on the island state ... Char Kuay Teow! SLURP! With the additional big prawns, this serving cost RM$9. Really!

Hmm ... Curry laksa, anyone?
Always good ... Penang Assam Laksa.

Apom Manis @ Mini banana pancakes, near Sunway Hotel Penang

Apong Telur and Kuih Ketayap, near Sunway Hotel Penang

Penang apartment near Batu Ferringhi

This was our home for the long weekend our gang spent in Penang :-) Located along Batu Ferringhi, thanks to the organiser for putting this trip together ... you know who you are!

The view!

From the ground floor, by the pool-side ...

Maxis Broadband - Huawei USB Modem

Easy, plug and play ... and what you get is high speed broadband on your laptop with no need for Wi-Fi networks or your mobile phone :-) RM$138 per month!
Coverage seemed decent, seen it in use in Bangsar as well as Penang, and it worked on most parts of the North South highway as we were on our road-trip as well. Sure the signal drops sometimes on the highway, but that happens with mobile phones too ...

Home Made Fish Head Noodle, Kota Damansara

Add: 8-1 and 10-1 Jalan PJU 5/5, Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara, PJ

One rainy night, looking for something healthy-ish to peck on ...
Fish head noodles - Good taste to the soup, but I found the fish difficult to eat with it being rather boney, it was fresh though.

Here's a review from my previous visit to this place.

Yue-wan (Fish meat) soup with Spinach ... Pretty good.

Approx RM$17 in total for both the above, not bad value considering that good fish is obviously used.

Big Stan (2008) - Rob Schneider

Source: DVD (Kota Damansara)

I had gone to the local shop to get a copy of Rob Schneider's Deuce Bigalow, but as soon as I picked that (and the sequel!) up, the guy said, "Have you watched this? It is funny!". So I got it ... and it was really good!

Who's Rob? After his numerous apperances on Saturday Night Live with Adam Sandler, he appeared in a bunch of films, including...
1999 Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo
2005 Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo
2007 I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry
2008 You Don't Mess with the Zohan (where he plays Salim , the stupid nemesis of Adam Sandler aka Zohan!).

The cast really makes a film, and Big Stan is no different ...
Rob Schneider ... Big Stan
David Carradine ... The Master
Jennifer Morrison ... Mindy
The dialogue is silly, the plot (Big Stan is about to go to prison, and has 6 months to toughen up so he doesn't get raped, and the rest of the film highlights what he gets up to in prison where he has to face off against an evil greedy warden!) even more mental, but it just jives ... A laugh a minute, go switch off your brain and enjoy Big Stan!

Malaysian Today - Kang Guan, Pulau Carey

Yay! I am now featured in the local paper, MALAYSIAN TODAY. My first write-up is titled "See food Eat food!", featuring Kang Guan of Pulau Carey.

Kang Guan Seafood, Pulau Carey

As featured on Malaysian Today!

Add: 3, Batu 1, Jalan Bandar Lama, Tepi Jambatan Pulau Carey, Teluk Panglima Garang, Kuala Langat, Selangor.
Tel: +603 352 7737
Note: Pork-free
Price: $75 (3 persons)

How do you tell the difference between a Christian and a Blogger?A Christian says grace before a meal, whilst a Blogger takes pictures! Welcome to my first blog for Malaysian Today!

I was first taken to Kang Guan Seafood Restaurant earlier this year, and think it must be one of the best value seafood places in Selangor!

Best way to get to Kang Guan is via the Kesas higway, turn off at the Banting-Klang exit, and drive towards Banting. Keep going straight alongthis road, and you will soon get to Teluk Panglima Garang town. Look forthe signboard that leads right to Pulau Carey, and head along the road untilyou see a bright yellow signboard on the right-hand side. The restaurantis across the road from this signboard, which is next to Jambatan Pulau Carey.

We chose a selection of popular dishes:
1) Oyster Omelette 'Hor Chien' - I liked this, it wasn't too oily, and I liked the little oysters used in this dish.
2) Salt baked Prawns - Fresh and large, but the batter wasn't the best.

3) Hokkien-style fried Mee Hoon - Very tasty, and a good complement to the other dishes.
4) Stir-fried Tapioca Leaves - Could have been more tender, but exhibited good flavour.
5) Yam Basket - The yam was nice and flakey, but overall the dish was a littlesweet for our liking!

Best of all was the bill! The total for all the food was just under RM$75.
Overall, it was a good value and tasty meal, at a very interesting location by the river.

Joo Hooi Kopitiam - Penang Road Cendol

Add: Joo Hooi Coffee Shop @ Lebuh Keng Kwee (just off Penang Rd), Penang

Found a great description of cendol on lastappetite.com
These green worms are cendol (pronounced chen-dul), made from green pea flour flavoured with pandan leaves. They’re essential for making the dish that is their eponym: a combination of the worms, shaved ice, santan (the first extraction of coconut milk), gula (palm sugar) and often red beans. With a dish so simple, the only key is finding a vendor who uses top quality ingredients.

It was only AFTER I finished eating the cendol and got home, that I realised that the one I had below, INSIDE the kopitiam (Joo Hooi Coffee Shop), wasn't the world famous Penang Road Teochew Cendol. It was the competitor from across the road. Didn't find it too bad, I have to say!

Assam Laksa - This was surprisingly, REALLY good!

Char Kuay Teow - Decent ... very decent!

Ngor hiang - Average

So ... on our first day in Penang, for the first meal (mind you, we did stop for late breakies at Ipoh!), we had our lunch in this humble kopi tiam besides the world's most famous cendol (Which we didn't have .. that will come later!), and found that the food served there was actually good, especially the assam laksa! What a start to our eating journey ... hmmm, not even the rain could dampen our spirits!

Amata Tea Arts and Vegetarian - Jusco, Bandar Baru Klang

I have to admit I don't often "choose" vegetarian food ... but gave it a go one lunch time, here is my experience at the rather obscure (but worth visiting!) Amata Tea Arts and Vegetarian Restaurant.

Location: Jusco @ Bandar Baru, Klang (Near Bukit Raja)
Tel: +603 3342 1519

Rendang Mutton (Small) @ RM$12 - Very tasty!

Thai Style Bean Curd @ RM$10 - Slightly bland, and I have had much better!

Salted vegetable Tau Foo soup @ RM$6 - Sluuurp!

Seaweed Soup @ RM$6 - Another good soup!

Perodua Kancil Mini Cooper wannabe near the Penang Bridge

I couldn't believe my eyes ... a "full conversion" Perodua Kancil, to mimic the Mini Cooper!

Yay! We made it to Penang ...

Wikipedia describes the bridge which costs RM$7 of toll to get across (You only pay going from mainland to island, with the return journey being "free")...
The Penang Bridge (Jambatan Pulau Pinang in Malay) E 36 is a dual-carriageway toll bridge that connects Gelugor on the island of Penang and Seberang Prai on the mainland of Malaysia on the Malay Peninsula.
The bridge is also linked to the North-South Expressway in Prai and Jelutong Expressway in Penang. It was officially opened to traffic on September 14, 1985.
The total length of the bridge is 13.5 km (8.4 miles), making it among the longest bridges in the world, the longest bridge in the country as well as a national landmark. PLUS Expressway Berhad is the concession holder which manages it.
The bridge was designed by a local Penang resident, Tan Sri Datuk Professor Ir. Chin Fung Kee, a well known authority in geotechnical engineering and former acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Malaya.

Here is a great view of a plane on take-off from the island, as we were nearly across the bridge ... Penang Airport is not far away.

Stop-over at Ipoh town en route to Penang

In our brief hour in Ipoh, we not only managed to enjoy the food at Kong Heng and Thean Chun, but also managed some shopping ... and dessert too!

Yee Thye - A biscuit shop ... and more! So many different local Perak and Penang goodies, a must visit shop!

Nice yellow VW Beetle ...

Sure hope it wouldn't rain too heavily on our road-trip to Penang!

Toyota Estima 3.0 : Second generation

Wikipedia ...
The first generation Previa was sold outside the United States until 2000, when a new dynamically designed Previa replaced it which was never sold in North America.
The second generation Previa had a slightly longer wheelbase (2900 mm) and was both narrower (1790 mm) and shorter (1770 mm) than the first one; it switched to FF layout and was based on the Camry platform.
It was produced with passenger doors on both sides and offered space for up to six, seven or eight passengers and, as with the first generation, was sold as the Estima in Japan and as the Tarago in Australia. The range available in Australia was the GLi, GLX and Ultima. The Ultima version was targeted as a competitor of the Chrysler's Plymouth Voyager.

I like this example of a slightly souped up Estima, check out the 18" TOMS rims, with Bridgestone Potenza tyres. Nice!

Production : 2000–2005
Layout : FF layout
Engines : 2.0 L 1CD-FTV , I4 diesel , 2.4 L 2AZ-FE I4 , 3.0 L 1MZ-FE V6 (JDM)
Transmission : 4-speed automatic

Juliansi.blogspot.com's verdict ... a comfortable, large (can comfortably sit 6 adults, or at a squeeze 7 = 2 + 2 + 3) and highly reliable "van"! Do like the powered doors on both sides, and once again those cool 18" after-fit rims!

Roadtrip to Penang ... Stop-over at Sungai Perak

Lovely day in Sungai Perak, en route to Penang ...

This is one of the 'nicest' stops along the North South highway, large stop-over area, with reasonably clean toilets.
Pity about the 'ANTI-DOG' signboard, which is huge!
ps - Looks like a West Highland Terrier aka Westie to me! :-)

Kak Sanah Nasi Lemak at Damansara Jaya - Super!

Found a GEM of a nasi lemak stall, I think it only operates at breakfast time, located in the Damansara Jaya sqare. Called "Kak Sanah", you can contact the propietor at +6019 222 7547.

Seems the queues for this rather popular stall can get looooong, but it was fine the morning I was there. We were asked to pick up a "sequence number" tag, to ensure everyone's fair turn! What a good idea :-)

As you can see, plenty of "lauks" were available but I often like my nasi lemak plain and simple, and it was fantastic. Great tasty rice, superb sweet-type sambal, and just simply delicious! My eating buddy enjoyed hers with some sotong too ... SLURP!

PS. It's a take-away only stall ... So, we had the nasi lemak breakies at the rather near-by Shell petrol station (There is a small area beside the Shell shop, which offers shelter as well as a couple of small tables - Great for eating or having a coffee!), which is located opposite the rather yummy Damansara Village Steamboat Restaurant (Add: 1067, Jalan Jenjarum, Kg. Sg. Kayu Ara, off Jalan SS23/10, PJ).

We love the sausages at Bernard's @ Centrepoint, Bandar Utama

Thai style Fish-cakes are very mediocre ... but the fried sausages with onions and chillis are divine!

Happy Birthday Usain Bolt!

Usain Bolt celebrates his 22nd birthday today ... HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the world's fastest man!!

As if the WORLD RECORD wasn't enough of a drama, check out the double DQ which was only confirmed an hour after the race ... Tsk tsk!

Sydney Morning Herald
Usain Bolt made good on his promise to run hard to the line in the Olympic 200 metres final. Oh boy, did he make good.
Bolt's lightning start, scintillating bend and driving finish brought him to the finish line in 19.30 seconds, 0.02 under the world record set by Michael Johnson in Atlanta in 1996.
Many people thought Johnson's record would survive beyond their lifetime. They had better check their vital signs, but most will find they are merely stunned, or comatose, but still alive. Expect reality to return soon.
The ninth man to complete an Olympic double in history, the first since Carl Lewis in 1984, Bolt managed to put his own unique stamp on the shared achievement, doing it with world records in both events.
Three men in the finals had personal best in the 19.60-range - Bolt at 19.67, Spearmon at 19.65 and Walter Dix at 19.69. Defending champion Shawn Crawford of the US ran 19.79 in winning the gold medal four years ago in Athens.

However, Bolt made them all look pedestrian. Churandy Martina of the Netherlands Antilles was second across the line in 19.82, with Crawford third in 19.96. Wallace Spearmon of the USA, third across the line and already most of the way around the stadium on Bolt's delirious victory lap, learned to his dismay that he had been disqualified for a lane violation. The same fate was suffered by Martina, meaning Crawford ended up with the silver medal and Dix the bronze.

Was the 200m finals a farce!? Double disqualifications!? WHAT!

Really good write up about the farce (It WAS a farce, besides Bolt's amazing achievement) that was the 200m finals at the Beijing Olympics last night.

Colorado Springs - The Gazette
An article by MILO F. BRYANT

There is something to be said about earning your way onto the podium.
We don't have to compete in the Olympics to know that getting to them takes hard work. It takes smart work, too.
Lifting, sprinting, stretching, technique, starts, mental work - hours and hours of all of them culminate in one moment. In the 200-meter sprint, that moment stretches over 20 seconds or so.
Thousands of hours for 20 seconds.
Almost seems unfair. But it's not.
What is unfair, at least from a good-of-the-game standpoint is what happened to American sprinter Wallace Spearmon and The Netherlands Antilles' Churandy Martina.
Every sprinter taught to run a curve has been told to hug that inside line. Both did. And both squeezed it a bit too tightly.

Both were disqualified for lane violations. They ran on the inside line. The video screen inside the Bird's Nest showed Spearmon's infraction over and over while Spearmon, unknowingly, ran around the track celebrating his bronze medal. Actually, all three celebrated. All three hugged and took pictures. Spearmon even picked up Bolt at one point carrying him a few yards before letting him down.

Looking at Spearmon's infraction, Team USA noticed Martina might have had a lane violation, too.
An hour to 90 minutes after the race, Team USA's protest was upheld. That gave Americans Shawn Crawford and Walter Dix silver and bronze medals.

Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt took the gold medal in world-record time, displaying a 19.30-second effort that eclipsed the 12-year-old record set by Michael Johnson by .02 of a second.

Call it sour grapes, but there's a difference between getting a medal and earning a medal. Both runners broke the rules, and I understand that. But it's near impossible to ascertain whether stepping on the line gave either of those sprinters .01 or .02 or .1 of a second advantage.

"That's not the way I wanted to attain a medal," Crawford said before finding out about Martina's disqualification. "I know he's heartbroken right now. He crossed the line in the podium position. Then to find out you're disqualified for stepping on the line, I'm disappointed for him. That's heartbreaking.
"A fourth place man walking home with a third-place medal? It just doesn't sit right with me. It feels kind of weird. It feels like a charity case."

Crawford is right. Gamers want to know that they're the best because they beat the best, not because the best did something that didn't affect the event's proceedings in any way.
"I don't feel like it gave him an advantage," Crawford said of Spearmon. "I'm in mourning for him. I know he's disappointed. I'm kind of disappointed myself."
Then a reporter told Crawford that the American team had filed a protest because it thought that Churandy committed a lane violation, too. Crawford rolled his eyes, shook his head and gave a sarcastic grin.
"Oh Lord," Crawford said. "The second place stepped out. The third place stepped out. Hopefully Usain stepped out, too! So, I'm going home with the gold."

Sounds silly, and laughter did follow the remarks. But there's a lot of truth in that sarcasm.
There's a difference between the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. This was a case where the letter of the law hurt the spirit. We have to wonder what it's teaching.

Crawford and Dix got their medals. But they didn't earn them.

Juliansi.blogspot.com says ... Martina Churandy is the reason why I found out that there was a sovereign nation called Netherlands Antilles!

The Netherlands Antilles (Dutch: Nederlandse Antillen), previously known as the Netherlands West Indies or Dutch Antilles/West Indies, is part of the Lesser Antilles and consists of two groups of islands in the Caribbean Sea: Curaçao and Bonaire, just off the Venezuelan coast, and Sint Eustatius, Saba and Sint Maarten, located southeast of the Virgin Islands. The islands form an autonomous part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The islands' economy depends mostly upon tourism, international financial services, international commerce and shipping and petroleum.

It is part constitutional monarchy part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands Area - Total 800 km² (184th in the world) or 309 sq mi. Population @ July 2005 estimated at 183,000 (185th).

Yes, a nation which is smaller then Singapore with a population no bigger then a little town in Malaysia produced the world's second fastest man. Yes, in my eyes, Martina Churandy was 2nd!

Usain Bolt breaks a new World Record - 200m Finals Beijing Olympics 2008

At 10:25pm (Beijing / Malaysia time), in the 200m Finals ...
Usain Bolt charging round the bend, well ahead of everyone else ...

He carried on ... strong ... incredible pace! And easily won the race, miles ahead of everyone else!

MARTINA Churandy (Neth. Antilles) ran an amazing race to just make Silver. USA's Wallace SPEARMON who had come in 3rd was DQ'ed for stepping over the white line, which left Shawn CRAWFORD (Also of the USA) with the Bronze.

Unlike in the 100m where Bolt pounded his chest and quite obviously slowed down at the end, he gave it his all in the 200m. That was how special Michael Johnson's 19.32s World Record from the Olympics in Atlanta, GA(USA) on 1st August 1996 was!

Usain Bolt has now set a new World Record ... 19.30s. Magnificent!

20th August, 2pm, just 8 hours before Bolt's record breaking moment ...
Michael Johnson admits that Bolt might one day shatter his own world 200m record.
"Nothing he does will shock me," Johnson said. "He has been working on his start and the first part of the 100m proved he has worked on that. He's going to have to turn the corner a lot better and run the corner better."
Juliansi.blogspot.com says ... Bolt just did!

ps . I picked up a few other cool quotes from this very special athlete ...
"It doesn't matter if I have the world record if I don't have the Olympic medal."
"I'm just going out there all the time to do my thing and show the world I'm probably the best."
"I came here to prove that I'm the best in the world, and I did that."
"I was having fun."

pps . What an Olympic Games this is ... first Michael Phelps, now Usain Bolt. Nuff' said!

Usain Bolt - This is what 19.30s looks like!

Some stunning photos of this magnificent athlete, taken from the official Beijing 2008 website .... Here is what a 19.30s 200m athlete, gold medal Olympian, looks like!

WELL DONE, Usain Bolt!

Malaysia Most Wanted - Food ... I get a mention!

Hmmm, who would have thought!! As seen on Malaysia Most Wanted - Food

Why does Guo Jingjing and other divers take a shower between dives?

Ever wonder why Guo Jingjing and other divers take showers between dives!?

The truth is out there ... Check out Yahoo.com
After completing a dive, competitors swim to a ladder, climb out of the pool and head immediately to a bank of showers that sit adjacent to the diving boards. Then, in full view of the crowd and cameras, they shower off. Divers keep their suits on, of course, usually appearing only to rinse off their hair and arms. Oftentimes, the divers will receive their scores while still showering off. What's the purpose of this?
Theories have ranged from 'to get the chlorine off' to 'they want to have fun' -- seriously, that last one is a direct quote from NBC's diving analyst, Cynthia Potter. Neither are the reason.
Divers shower in between each dive to keep their muscles warm after getting out of the pool. The temperature of the pool water and the air are usually different (the pool is usually around 80 degrees, with the air temperature between 68 and 72 degrees). This difference can cause muscle tightness. To combat this, divers warm up in either the showers or a hot tub.
Mystery: solved. (Although we're still a bit unclear as to why the showers are out in the open. The Water Cube cost over $200 million to build. They couldn't have put a privacy wall in?!)

So ... who's Guo Jingjing? She's probably the 3rd most famous person in the games, after Michael "Greatest Olympian" Phelps and Usain "Pounds his chat, forgets to lace up, and runs 9.69s" Bolt!
Timesonline.co.uk (August 10th)
Guo Jingjing, known as the diving diva of the Chinese team after she called one of her rivals, Blythe Hartley, "the fat Canadian", and her partner Wu Minxia gave China the first of what is expected to be eight gold medals off the boards at the Water Cube.
Guo and Wu, the current world champions, defended the 3 metre synchronised springboard title they won four years ago in Athens, finishing with 343.50 points. The pair led through all five rounds, their every twist and turn accompanied by wild cheering by their red flag-waving fans. The loudest cheer rang out when Guo and Wu received three 10s for synchronicity on their backward dive in the second round.

BBC.co.uk (August 17th)
Guo Jingjing became the most successful woman diver in Olympic history by winning gold in the individual three-metre springboard on Sunday.
The Chinese dominated the event with a run of brilliant dives to beat Russia's Julia Pakhalina and Wu Minxia of China.
It was the 26-year-old superstar's second gold of the Beijing Games and the sixth of her career.
And Guo, one of China's richest sports stars, has now backtracked on her desire to retire after this Olympics.
"In 2004 I already won all the gold medals I could, but I continued because in 2008 we were going to have the Games in our motherland," she said after her victory. "But in these four years I realised that I really do enjoy diving. I like to dive, and I like the feeling of standing on the diving board. "Because I like it I feel I can't give it up, so if I can, I will continue."
Guo passed the five medals won by countrywoman Fu Mingxia in her career with her second gold of this Games after she won the synchronised 3m event with Wu last weekend.
It is the first time a diver has won individual and synchronised gold in consecutive Olympics.

Juliansi.blogspot.com says ... I don't think any of us are complaining that she is extending her career, perhaps her competitors are slightly miffed ... Hah!

Sri Melur Jaya - Huge Roti Tisu

Located: Along Lorong Batu Nilam 27A, Bandar Bukit Tinggi 2, Klang

Was taking dad on a food hunt of Bukit Tinggi, and originally wanted to go to the local Pelita at Bukit Tinggi , but ended up stopping here cos' I recognised the restaurant name from my many Air Asia flights . Dissapointment!! The Maggi Mee Goreng Kosong was not very tasty ...

The Teh Tarik Ais Kurang Manis we had to accompany our food was rather bland, and without the 'teh mamak kick'! AND ... to top (Pun intended, this fella was tallll ... or more like, loooonnnnngg!) it all off , the Roti Tisu was overly sweet and somehow lacking in character!

To quote dad, "As big as one of the fish I caught!" ... Hah!

ps - Total bill was RM$9.80 for our 2 drinks, and the noodles + mega roti!

Steamed kampung chicken at home

Simple but delicious ... Steamed kampung chicken (This 'kampung or village' chicken cost us RM$14 fresh), a delicious chilli sauce and some stir fried veges on the side.

The fried fish was excellent tonight ... so tasty!

Which do you prefer? Tiger or Heineken!?

Taste test conducted at ... Boon Wah @ Berkeley Gardens, Klang
The night started with some Guinness ...

But most of us settled on Heineken!

Some clever joe said "I bet I could tell the difference between Tiger v Heineken" ... Two minutes later, they were both poured into similar glasses, I closed my eyes, and gulped both.
Guess what, I was right! No problem :-) and I have to admit I have a preference of the Asia Pacific Brewery (Singapore) concoction ... Tiger Beer!

Was surprised how quiet it was in the restaurant ... On previous visits here it was always packed! Thanks to CC boss for the treat ... slurp :-)

t is Tau Kan. Dammmmmn good, and a signature dish here @ RM$20.

Yellow Wine Ginger Chicken (We asked for kampung chicken, but there was none) @ RM$21. Rather expensive, but very tasty.

Steamed Red Snapper @ RM$35. Beautifully steamed and fresh, but pity it was so small!

Bamboo Clam or Chok Tan 'Kum Heong' style @ RM$16 ... Average.

Majorly dissapointing ... prawns weren't fresh! At least the boss gave us our money back @ RM$30. Phew ...

Lai Liu Har "Ham Tan" style (Salted-egg), but couldn't taste the seafood, it was pure batter, and there wasn't enough salted-egg @ RM$16.

Fan Sui Miu (Tapioca leaf) stir-fried with belacan @ RM$9. Simply average.

Best of all ... the different and fabulous Keropoks, good flavour and fresh @ RM$1. This purple one is infused with Yam me thinks.

Elena Isinbaeva - The Czarina of Pole Vault!

Beijing 2008 : Women's Pole Vault Finals

Starting at 4.70m, which Elena Isinbaeva cleared on the first vault ... She did the same at 4.85 ... Three attempts (dramatic!?) to clear 4.95 ... and finally she attempted,1 cm above her (yes, who else!) World Record at 5.05m. Yes, 5m 5cm. GOLD! Her much talked about rival Jenn Stuczynski came in ... second.

latimes.com has a candid interview in "The Russian, possessor of 23 world-record vaults, scoffs at the idea that American Jenn Stuczynski is in her league."

Asked if she were annoyed by media suggestions that U.S. vaulter Jenn Stuczynski was a challenger after her U.S. record vault of 16 feet, 3/4 inch (4.90 meters) this season, Isinbaeva was utterly dismissive."I can stay quiet when they are right, but when they are wrong, why should I stay quiet?" Isinbaeva asked. "They said 'Wooooo' when she jumped 4.90, but I jumped this height four years ago. It is nothing special."

Know what? She proved that she was ... right!

Hmm, what should we order tonight? Ask the boss for help on recommending their finest dishes, or get some chinese-translation help!

Vegetarian and meat dishes ... beancurd, cabbage, pork (excellent!) and more brinjal.

These are the signature dishes ... various flower dumplings. Sort of like a xiu loong bao, but with a crusty skin / pastry on the top. RL informs me that it used to be the meals of kings, well we were kings for the evening!

Also had a good sweet and sour style fish.

Sizzling and full of flavour ... Black pepper lamb.

Good value meal, and highly interesting too ... about RM$27 per person only.
R was back for a bit, so we caught up with her for din-dins ... Yum!

Always game for a good laugh!

I thought this looked a little dubious in the menu, but CL said its as good as home-cooked tau yew bak (Dark soya sauce stewed Pork) ... and it certainly didn't dissapoint. Excellent!

Deep fried pork balls - Yummy! Served with raisins on the side, interesting.

Penang Prawn Mee - Looks good, but the flavour was no-where compared to 'hawker' style noodles at Penang or even at Jalan Loke Yew (KL), or O&S (PJ).

Overall I have to say that Bernard's / Champ's does take care of what they cook and serve, and I look forward to many more meals here.

Yay, made it in time to Centrepoint for the big game, the finals between Super Dan and our own Lee Chong Wei from Butterworth, Penang!

Yes that dejected look on Lee Chong Wei's face says it all ... compare that with Lin "Super Dan"'s confidence and energy!

We got stuffed! Lin Dan went mad, running around, doing military like salutes (He is in the army after all), and throwing his racquet AND both shoes at the crowd which went berzerk! WELL DONE, Lin Dan and GOOD JOB MALAYSIA ... Our first and only medal in the Beijing 2008 games!

As we were leaving ...

Olympics ... The end of a week of fierce competition!

Where were you when ...

Athletics

Usain Bolt ... remember that name, remember that 100m race, remember 9.69. Yes, sub-9.70. He da man!
What's cool ... Usain Bolt won Olympic gold and set a new world record in the 100m with his left shoe undone. Yes, his laces were not done! Bolt's time of 9.69 seconds could most definitely have been faster if his shoelace was tied and if he hadn't spent the last metres pounding his chest! Hah :-)

What's so cool too! Yeong Shang, my dear friend travelled from LA to Beijing, and was at the stadium to witness this miraculous race.

Swimming

Team USA with 23 year old Michael Phelps doing the first leg (Butterfly) won the 4x100m Individual Medley relay at the Water Cube, in the world-record time of 3:29.34. The Aussies were close ... 3:30.04 ! This meant Michael Phelps broke Spitz's 7 gold record from the 1972 Olympics.. EIGHT GOLDS for Phelps. Yes, EIGHT!

Phelps said to a reporter ... "Records are always made to be broken, no matter what they are." "It's something I wanted to do and I'm thankful to him (Spitz) for doing what he did."

Table Tennis

China clinched the women's Olympic team table tennis title here Sunday, after fighting off a strong challenge from Singapore to win the final 3-0. Yes, Singapore gets a SILVER!

Badminton

Malaysia and its jalur gemilang as well as MALAYSIA BOLEH spirit had hopes of winning our first ever Olympic gold medal, but alas it was not to be ...
Lee Chong Wei lost to China's top seeded Lin Dan in straight-sets ... 12-21, 8-12. All is not lost, Chong Wei took home a silver for us!

What was cool ... "Super Dan" was obviously a member of China's army gave his trademark victory salute, very army-esque!
Even cooler ... Did you know that since our country's first games in the Melbourne 1956 Olympics, Malaysia has only ever won two silvers, one of which was tonight! We also have 2 other bronzes in the bag, all from badminton.

Pangkor Village - Pang Kor Fish Head Curry, Taman Megah PJ

This is a rather old establishment, that has redone itself (and relocated) a couple of times, I used to be a HUGE fan of this place (my family too - We even went to the original outlet in SS2 back in the 80s, and followed them all the way to Taman Megah SS24), but it has somehow lost its charm and flavour ever since it moved 'upstairs'. I hadn't been there for years, this was my return visit!

Add: 59, Jalan SS24/8, Taman Megah, PJ

Pangkor Fish Head Curry - Their signature dish. Too salty! Good flavour, but I was surprised how salty it was, didn't remember it to be so in the past?

Kam Heong La La - Good, Honey glazed Soya Sauce Chicken - Hmmm, has the flavour changed?

Again ... stir fried veges (Yau Mak and String beans), which wasn't much to shout about.

This was rather decent ... Petai with Prawns, and the Minced Meat Tofu was enjoyed by all.

Highlight of the meal, was surprisingly the very thick and flavoursome Kwai Lin Goh (Herbal Jelly).

Overall, I was dissapointed. Was it my taste buds which had changed ... or has the food really deteriorated. I would go back at dinner time one day to check it out once again ... hmm!

rasarasa.net has a good history lesson!
WHEN the Tan family moved to Petaling Jaya from Pangkor Island in the early 1980s to open a restaurant in SS2, they were armed with good recipes, determination and a strong knowledge of seafood.
Their establishment did not become popular until they shifted to Taman Megah in 1999 and renamed in Pangkor Fish Head Curry.
Tan Senior is helped by his wife, son Tan Kim Soon, the head chef, and two daughters. Together they make quite a good team
Specialties :

Nice for a change ... Genuine italian mineral water. Or Aqua minerale?

aquamaestro.com
Name: SAN BENEDETTO
Country of Origin: ITALY
TDS: 250
pH: 7.6
Altitude: AYOLO HILLS
Discovery of Source: Ancient
San Benedetto was arguably the original favorite of the Republic of Venice, in vogue with aristocratic Venetian families during the Renaissance. The water, tapped at the surface in ancient times, is now drawn from 1,000 feet below ground to ensure that all its original features are unchanged, and unadulterated; the water trickles to its source from the glaciers of the Dolomites. Without question, San Benedetto is an elite, low-mineral delicacy that carries a 30 milligram per liter punch of Magnesium.

BMW X5 - The new shape, a new face, it's the E70

Nice new makeover for the class-leading, and still desirable X5 :-)

Wikipedia describes ...
The BMW E70 automobile platform is the development name for the current X5 SAV/SUV. It replaced the BMW E53 in November 2006. The new generation BMW X5 is 60 mm (2.4 in) wider, 165 mm (6.5 in) longer; with a 110 mm (4.3 in) longer wheelbase, but remains at the height of the previous generation X5 at 1766 mm (69.5 in). It is manufactured alongside the new, 2008 BMW X6 at BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina plant in the USA. The xDrive AWD system updates previewed in the facelifted X3 have continued with further detail improvements for the E70. It uses a double wishbone suspension at the front.

The E70 features many new technological advancements for this class as standard equipment including BMW's iDrive system, electronic 'joystick' gearshift (no mechanical connection to the gearbox to win space in the console), LED taillamps, and options such as head-up display HUD, active steering, active damping, and Dynamic Drive which uses active anti-roll bars which use a motor in the middle to actively counteract body roll.

The interior of the new, larger, X5 is completely new. It has a large center-mounted display screen and the simplified iDrive, a man-machine interface system also found in the rest of the BMW model range. The E70 further incorporates many comfort options such as a glass panorama-roof, and, for the first time in a BMW, an optional third row seat which has increased the seating capacity in E70 to 7 passengers, addressing criticism of the E53 model which had been regarded as being slightly too small for this market segment.

The E70 is also the first production vehicle to use FlexRay, a new extremely fast electrical bus system; it is only used for the control of the chassis damping system. The new 'joy-stick'-style electronic space-saving shifter has since been adopted in the new 2008 BMW 5 Series.

It is speculated that another future "M-Sport" Model, due in 2009, will have a 4.4L Twin Turbo V8 (N63B44 engine) that will produce about 430 horsepower (320 kW). Transmission choices differ from that offered today - 6-speed Steptronic automatic will be offered as a standard option.

On November 15, 2007, the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) announced that the current X5 and X3 models were the top safety picks for all mid-size SUV models.

X5 Security
It is a variant with safety glass, heavy-duty material and ballistics-resistant steel.
It was debuted in 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Are you sleepy?

Phelps is so close ...

It wasn't luck that helped Phelps win by 1/100th's of a second in today's 100m Butterfly finals, it was pure guts. Look at it this way, the guy wasn't even on the 'top 3 radar' at the 50m mark ... and he managed to WIN!

Go Phelps ... Go EIGHT GOLDS!

Volvo C30 T5

Couldn't believe my eyes when HC pointed out to me this rare beast from Singapore, at Bangsar Shopping Centre's car park ... cool! Plenty of good information from Wikipedia ...

Volvo C30
Parent company Ford Motor Company Premier Automotive Group
Production 2006–present
Assembly Ghent, Belgium
Predecessor Volvo 480
This particular engine ... 2.5 L 227 hp , turbocharged straight-5

The Volvo C30 is a compact car produced by Volvo (part of the Ford Motor Company Group). The C30 is a three-door, four-seat hatchback powered by straight-4 and straight-5 engines. Despite the name, the car is the hatchback version of the S40/V50/C70 range and therefore uses the same Ford C1 platform as the Ford Focus and Mazda3.
The production car was officially unveiled at the 2006 Paris Motor Show.
In mid-2006, the C30 was approved for production launch in late 2006 in Europe. The C30 went on sale in Canada in March 2007 as a 2007 model, and in October 2007 in the United States as a 2008 model, with the T5 as the single version.
It is being marketed as a premium hatchback or "sports coupe" specially designed for first-time Volvo buyers and the youth market. Production is expected to be 65,000 units a year, 75% for sale in the European market.

Notably, the design of the C30 recalls another important Volvo, the 1800ES, the estate adaptation of the P1800 Coupe. According to Simon Lamarre, chief studio designer, "the 1800ES has become one of the icons for Volvo," inspiring the design of the Volvo C30.
However, not everyone is pleased with the C30s "sawed-off rear" and calling it "Volvo's AMC Gremlin."

SAFETY
The C30 continues Volvo's marketing strategy to put safety as a primary concern.[citation needed] This is demonstrated through some recently developed safety features, including a method of overcoming the "blind spots" or "dead areas" in the driver's view to the rear through a system solely introduced by Volvo, known as BLIS (Blind Spot Information System).
The C30 also features a four-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic stability program (ESP), traction control and airbags all around for side impact and rollover protection, front and rear crumple zones, and a stiff occupant cell.
The Volvo C30 has a patented front and rear structure using four different grades of steel to absorb and redistribute impact energy around the body of the coupe. Volvo's Whiplash Protection System and Side Impact Protection System with side airbags and Inflatable Curtain are also standard. The seat belts have pretensioners to protect the occupants against unexpected accidents.
The car also uses Volvo's Intelligent Driver Information System (IDIS) which continuously monitors the car's preemptive systems such as steering wheel angle, pedal depressions, and overall factors that help the vehicle's computer to decide if the driver is busy or distracted merging or turning, and will then accordingly delay certain data or alerts that are unimportant.

Dorset Cereals from Cold Storage, Bangsar BSC

CL when to get some English cereals from Cold Storage, at Bangsar's BSC ...

RM$13 and RM$15 each ... He swears they are great! Must try :-)

dorsetcereals.co.uk has a great description of their products ...
where we come from...
Down here in Dorset, where the gently rolling hills and winding country lanes lead to a spectacular coastline, we can’t help believing that life is too short to settle for second best, and that simple, honest pleasures are often the most rewarding. Like walking barefoot in the morning dew, an ice cream on the beach or jumping in puddles just for fun.
how we make things...
We visit our suppliers to make sure we are using the best possible ingredients. We don’t just chuck our ingredients together, we balance and blend them carefully using our knowledge of what tastes delicious. We don’t scrimp, we make sure our recipes are stuffed full of fruit, nuts and seeds. We don’t forget the flakes - they get as much attention as those fruits.

ps - Also, do try out their other dishes such as Toad in the hole, Fish fingers ... and a delicious Caesar Salad also comes to mind :-) Their pies are good too!

Malaysia goes down ... Olympics Badminton @ George and Dragon BSC

We were glued to Astro / the television at the George and Dragon, Bangsar Shopping Centre (Yes, open for business as usual), last night ... We were there from 6.30pm till 11.30pm. Alas, it was not Malaysia's night!

In the Women's Singles Quarterfinals,
Lu Lan, China, def. Mew Choo Wong, Malaysia, 21-7, 29-27.
The second set was a genuine battle royale, but how Mew Choo could lose when she had 5 set points ... only she would know!

In the Doubles ...
Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan, Indonesia, def. Kien Keat Koo and Boon Heong Tan, Malaysia, 21-16, 21-18.
We were genuinely outclassed, but that bad line call near the end of the second and final set, must have been partially to blame!

Sex and the City : Mercedes GLK and S550

Sex and the City : The Movie was a platform of superb product placement for this German marque!

2009 Mercedes-Benz GLK Class
Check out Samantha and her new Merc SUV!

Wikipedia ... The Mercedes-Benz GLK (code name X204) is a compact crossover competing with the Infiniti EX, Acura RDX, BMW X3 and Land Rover LR2/Freelander, as well as the upcoming Audi Q5, Volvo XC60, Saab 9-4X, and Cadillac BRX. The model sits below the M-Class in the lineup.
The GLK-Class was launched in 2008 and is built in Bremen (Germany), the first Mercedes SUV to be built there. Its design is heavily influenced by the GL-Class.
On 2008-01-12, actress Kim Cattrall appeared at a special unveiling ceremony at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, confirming that her Sex and the City character (Samantha Jones) would drive the SUV in the movie version of the popular TV show.
The GLK was presented for the first time in 2008 in Detroit under the form of the Mercedes-Benz Vision GLK Freeside concept. The GLK-Class shares the C-Class (W204) platform.

Sex and the City : The Movie (2008)

Source: DVD (SS2)
Not sure if this film will ever end up in our shores, and if it does it would be 'very much cut cut cut' anyways ... so I enjoyed a boot-leg copy. Fabulous film!! Big THUMBS UP from us :-)

Here are the gals ... needing no introduction, but here you go anyway!

Sarah Jessica Parker ... Carrie Bradshaw
Kim Cattrall ... Samantha Jones
Kristin Davis ... Charlotte York
Cynthia Nixon ... Miranda Hobbes

The casting is brilliant on tele, as it is in the movie, and the 'extras' include ...
Chris Noth ... John James 'Mr. Big' Preston
Jennifer Hudson ... Louise
David Eigenberg ... Steve Brady
Evan Handler ... Harry Goldenblatt

The series, as is the movie was written by Michael Patrick King, and is based upon a book by Candace Bushnell.

What's the movie all about? It picks up from after the tele series, but there are plenty of flashbacks and references to help those (I don't think there are many!) who didn't follow the TV series to understand what's going on!

Basically ... Carrie Bradshaw and Mr. Big make a rather rushed decision to tie the knot, in fabulous New York City. The wedding guest list quickly expands from the 70s to over 200 guests, and Carrie's simple wedding gown quickly transforms to something much ... muchhh more elaborate! The chosen location? The New York Public Library, which means it would practically be a public affair!

Some notes from imdb.com
A quick introduction to Carrie's girlfriends - Samantha, the sexpot ; Charlotte, the sweet naïf; and Miranda, the rigid perfectionist--could not be happier. At least, they couldn't be happier for Carrie.

Charlotte still has the unrealized hope of getting pregnant. Samantha is finding a loving, committed relationship more grueling than she could have imagined. Miranda unwittingly lets her own unhappiness--created when Steve admits to cheating on her just once--spoil Carrie's. After a heated encounter with Steve, she happens to spot Mr. Big and tells him he's crazy to get married. She's really only thinking of her own marriage. But her angry remark gets Mr. Big to thinking! Hmmm ... I shall leave you to watch the rest of the film!

And here's some pics from The Scene ! Check out the number of passer-bys who stopped by to look :-)

Finally ... some incredible quotes from this remarkable film:-

Carrie Bradshaw: And we were dressed from head to toe in love... the only label that never goes out of style.

Miranda Hobbes: [at a bar, drinking Cosmopolitans] Why did we ever stop drinking these? Carrie Bradshaw: Because everyone else started!

Carrie Bradshaw: Women come to New York for the two L's: Labels and Love.

Carrie Bradshaw: Some love stories aren't epic novels, some are short stories Carrie Bradshaw: But, that doesn't make them any less filled with love.

Mr. Big: "Ever Thine, Ever Mine, Ever Ours."
I loved this! What's it all about? It is actually a letter made out by Ludwig van Beethoven and it is called Immortal Beloved. This is a letter to the one he will always love, his soulmate. His heart will be true to her ... and only he will love her always.

Bangsar Tai Chau - Really good fried rice!

To Fu with minced pork, and Sweet and Sour Pork ... slurp! From a tai-chau (big fry place) near Nam Chun in Lucky Garden Bangsar

And a really good, crisp and tasty Fried Rice (yong chow style me thinks) to go with it ... slurp!

ps - Thanks for the treat, SBF :-) Total cost of the above? RM$25.

Michael Phelps quest continues!

Simply breathtaking! The moment of the Beijing 2008 games so far I reckon ...

Event: 400-meter freestyle relay
The quest: Michael Phelps goes for 8 gold medals in the same Olympics
The unthinkable ... The US relay team was miles behind after Phelps, Garrett Weber-Gale and Cullen Jones; Well, 6/10 ths of a second behind, with one swimmer to go ... and Jason Lezak saved the day, not just for the US of A, but for Phelps and for the entire swimming event!
The result!
1) A time of 3 minutes 8.24 seconds, smashing the world record by nearly 4 seconds.
2) More importantly ... A victory by 0.08s over the French relay team.
3) And most importantly ... Phelps has his SECOND gold medal for these games.

This picture really says it all ...

I am hooked ... swimming's really cool! Go Phelps!

Mum and dad popped by for dinner ... Coco too :-)

Simply ... Very simply DELICIOUS! Spare ribs steamed with sour plum, Prawn omelette, and stir fried Cabbage. I love home food!

Green fees (AGS Member), inclusive of shared caddy: RM$88

Frightening island green ... My ball didn't get wet though :-) In fact, I overhit it to the far-right end of the green!

GC booooom!

Playing on the other flight ... H, P and his friend, and Big-W. The serious players!

CCY in action...

Another pretty hole!

GC again ...

Its actually a rather pretty course ... pity it was so darn dry and the ground was bone-rock-hard!

Verdict? I shot a rather miserable 103, but the round did (in most parts!) feel better then the score would present.
My little review .... SCORRRRRCCCHING hot day!! Started off on the much-talked-about NEW 9 holes, Tasik, which was a matter of damage limitation as the ground was rock solid from the heat. Shot 52. Then moved to the Putera 9, where on Hole 3 (Uphill 122m Par 3), my sweet 8 Iron shot actually HIT THE PIN!
Arrgh... no ace, but a bogey as the ball ricochetted off the green! Anwyays ... finished the nine with a poor 51. Sigh ... what did I get for my efforts? A SUN-BURN!!

BMW M5 E60 in burgundy with Brembo brakes

As seen at Rawang's Tasik Puteri golf course today ...
Hmm, not sure if this was a 'REAL' E60 M5. But I do like the Brembo calipers and cross-drilled brake discs. Slurp!

Klang's finest Kon Loh Mee aka One Tonne Mee, Indiana Cafe

Located: Along Persiaran Raja Muda Musa, which is the main artery that leads from Klang towards Port Klang. Head along the road, pass La Salle School on the left, and start looking out on the right... Refer to more details in my previous review

Whilst waiting (One learns about the virtue of being patient when eating here!), we observed the interesting rapport between husband and wife (more like wife and husband) who operate this stall.

Yay... our food arrived. Took something like 35 minutes, which is OK considering that it was Sunday morning breakfast time in Klang, and most tables were full of waiting patrons when we arrived!

There isn't much I haven't raved about at this place ... so I shall just say that even mum thought it was marvellous!! Dad simply loves the noodles here, crinkly and of a delightful 'springiness'.

ps - Pricing is simple ... and well, CHEAP! Kon Loh Mee (Or Wan Tan Mee, or One Tonne Mee) is RM$4 for a large portion, and an additional Wan Tan Soup is RM$3.50. The former is actually served with a small bowl of the later mentioned soup, with at least 5 wantans inside (really generous!).

Chicken Rice whilst watching Day One of the Olympics!

Hmm ... I always seem to be eating whilst watching Beijing 2008! Here I am watching the women's footie ... in fact, I thought it was the men's for the first 2 minutes (Germany v Brasil I think). Haha! Was more interested in my ... chicken rice!

McDonalds Double Cheese Burger

Wonder how much McDs paid to be a sponsor of Beijing 2008?

Hmm... how much of the RM$6 that I paid for this double cheese burger went to the marketing campaign!? It wasn't too horrid ... I would rather have had porridge, but o' well ... it was still a nice supper!

Pad Kaprao @ the Opening Ceremony, Bejing Olympics 2008

Where were you at 8pm @ 8th August 2008 ... 08-08-08 !?

Lobster @ Mantra, Amari Pattaya in Thailand

Dinner at the Amari Orchid Pattaya's restaurant, Mantra. Its a really nice place :-)

My seafood soup, about 320 THB. Really good!

DP and me shared a Mantra Surf and Turf ... 2 Lamb chops, 1 succulent steak, and a hugggggggge Phuket Lobster (Oh, there were also 2 prawns). Excellent! 4,200 THB or about RM$420.

Sawasdeekhap Ju Jian Si ... Huh!

Oh my ... Perhaps this is inspired by the Beijing Olympics! Ju Jian Si ... is this a chinese national? Or perhaps Ja Ja Binks (Star Wars) brother!? Hahaa....

ps - This was the welcome note left for me at Amari Ocean Tower, Pattaya.

Room service Pad Kaprao @ Amari Pattaya

My standard tradition in Thailand ... I have to have a pad kaprao room service order :-)
For 235 THB (RM$23), one gets a Pad Kaprao Moo Sarb (Basil and chilli stir fried minced pork) with a Kai Dao (omelette - in this case, they gave me a double, yum!) served with rice ... Yummy!

Hmmm, a few steps closer...

Not bad at all!

I like this hotel!

Return visit to Amari Ocean Tower, Pattaya in Thailand

This must be one of the nicest new hotels in Pattaya, and possibly the best in Amari's chain of hotels ... I returned once again to the Amari Ocean Tower wing, at Pattaya, Thailand.
I had previously done a write-up about this hotel so I shall just say it with photos this time ...

I always love the integrated bath area as well as separate toilet and rain-shower rooms, all within the large room.

Some fruits as a welcome ...

It was past midnight by the time I arrived at Pattaya ...

You find food in the strangest places…
And no… I’m not talking about the longkang or the loo… I’m talking about a blog… BUT WAIT! It’s not just any blog… it’s Jules’ blog and this is not the Jules from Fly FM’s Rush Hour but some stranger I found online. Was searching for the best Nasi Lemak stall in Taman Tun when this one came up…

The disappointing thing, I didn’t find my favourite Nasi Lemak stall BUT I found something EVEN better – a restaurant by the name of Santai! I was surprised that I’ve never heard of this place but the review Jules gave on his blog was GOOD GOOD GOOD all the way!

To verify his claims, the only way is to check it out! :) I dropped by the restaurant – it’s a very nice Malay themed restaurant which isn’t fancy but makes you feel at home. It’s got a traditional feel that almost makes you wanna eat immediately…
Instead of gorging down on everything on the menu, I ordered 2 simple dishes – a Nasi Pattaya and a Seafood Tom Yam Soup.

The verdit? Really simple and good. Let me describe the Nasi Pattaya – it’s basically fried rice with minced chicken wrapped in egg. The unique thing about this dish is that it’s extremely simple and doesn’t have the bells and whistles like special sauces or anything like that… it’s just TASTY… with simplicity. I don’t know how else to describe it.
As for the soup? The way I like it… not too spicy and comes with average sized, fresh, squid and crunchy prawns that are waiting for you to bite it’s tail off – YEEHA! :)

Check it out… may it be for breakfast, lunch or dinner – I highly recommend it – oh yeah, another plus point – it’s not that expensive either! All the above plus the soya bean milk I had was just 15 ringgit!

Thanks again to Jules who recommended this joint – check his blog out at http://juliansi.blogspot.com/

Chicken Hor Fun is fabulous at Say Huat, Section 17 PJ

I really like eating at Section 17, especially in this large kopi-tiam which I have frequented many times ... why? It serves possibly the best char kuay teow ... anywhere!

As Roberts was closed on Monday, we had to try something else! What did we discover...
Fabulous noodles ... I especially liked the soup variety, fish-ball and shredded chicken hor fun in soup. Excellent!

Thai fried rice (I think it was RM$5) served by a delightful and friendly aunty, looks a wee bit soggy, but taste it and you will be hooked! Just a tinge of belacan, and perhaps nam pla (aka fish sauce), so darn tasty...

Korean Restaurant Da On previously known as Kung Jung, Pavilion KL

We had lots ... and LOTS of barbecued meats, which they prepared for us, and brought to our table (That way our fancy clothes won't stink, haha!), this included some Lamb Galbi (RM$55) and So Galbi (RM$65 x 2 portions again!). Also had the Dak Galbi @ RM$40.

Our gang's favourite ... Yukhoe (RM$60 x 2 portions).

For the seasoning, soy sauce, sugar, salt, sesame oil, green onion, and ground garlic, sesame seed, black pepper and bae juice (Asian pear in Korean) are used.

Here's our spread ... for the five of us :-) SLURP! Also had the Haemul Pahjeon (RM$30), Japchae (RM$30) as well as Dolsot Bibimbap (RM$25).

To finish off ... and wash the pallet, some watermelon.

Lamborghini Murcielago - Is this the LP640 Versace?

Spotted in Pavilion, KL! Simply marvellous!!

Hmmm ... this sure LOOKS a lot like the ultra-rare LP640 Versace edition!

Some research via Wikipedia revealed ...
The Lamborghini Murciélago is a high performance sports car produced by Italian automaker Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. and designed by Luc Donckerwolke. It was introduced in 2001 as the successor to the Diablo.
The Murciélago is a two-door, two-seat coupé. To celebrate the company's 40 years in operation, 50 special edition Murciélagos were built during the autumn of 2003. An open-top version called the Murciélago Roadster was introduced in 2004 for the 2005 model year. The roadster features similar performance to the coupé with a more aggressive rear flank, as well as a considerably higher price tag.
The Murciélago sports a 6.2-liter version of the Lamborghini V12 engine, a six-speed manual or six-speed sequential automatic transmission, and four-wheel drive. It also has a rear spoiler that can be raised to an angle of 70 degrees, side mirrors that fold in to improve aerodynamics, and side scoops that automatically open to the needed size to let in just the right amount of air needed to cool its engine.

The 2008 car's fuel economy is 8 mpg (U.S.) (29 l/100 km) city and 13 mpg (U.S.) (18 l/100 km) freeway, making it the least efficient 2008 car for city and highway driving, according to the EPA.

The coupé's base price is US $313,000, which is US $107,000 more than its smaller sibling, the Lamborghini Gallardo.

In 2006 the Murciélago's engine was replaced by a stronger 6.5-liter engine and the car's name was changed to Murciélago LP640. For the 2007 model year Lamborghini did the same with the roadster model, which is now called Murciélago LP640 Roadster. Both versions received a minor facelift.

The LP640 Versace Edition was revealed at the Toronto Autoshow 2008, with the white-black trim in the door. Presented at the Paris International Autoshow, the Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 Versace is a special edition version of the LP640 Coupé, with all the same performance features. The only difference is the two tone white-black trim, shown on both the exterior and interior of the car.

Subaru Legacy

One has to admire the discreteness and steathness of a Subaru Legacy :-) Underneath that 'ordinary' body, is a Boxer engine, Turbo-charged, and AWD (All wheel drive). Wow!

Wikipedia describes the history, and this particular 4th generation Legacy ...
The Subaru Legacy is a mid-size car introduced by the Japanese manufacturer Subaru in February 1989 as a larger companion to the company's Leone/Loyale. Worldwide distribution started in 1990.
In Australia, the Legacy bears the name Liberty out of respect for Legacy Australia, an organization which aids veterans and their families during and after wars.
The standard equipped symmetrical all-wheel drive system is currently unique to the Legacy in this class size of vehicle.

On May 23, 2003, Fuji Heavy Industries debuted the redesigned Legacy, known as the BL for sedan models and BP for wagons. It was released worldwide in 2004, with Subaru of America commencing production in January 2004 for the United States and Canadian markets.
The chassis was redesigned and made stiffer, and it marked the return of a turbocharged engine to North American Legacies, featuring a 2.5 liter unit derived from that of the North American Impreza WRX STI. Due to advancements in turbocharger technology and tightening emission standards, the twin-turbo setup was dropped from the lineup. Turbocharged models and the H6 offered Subaru's first 5-speed automatic transmission, featuring SportShift technology licensed from Prodrive, Ltd.
