Couldn't resist stopping here on the way back from Ipoh back home to TM for CNY ...

Since when did pomelos become so expensive!? 20 - 25 RM per fruit. Eeeeep! Is it the new king of fruits!?

Best curry noodles - Xin Quan Fang Ipoh, Oldham Hall reunion

Add: Ipoh town ... Jalan Sultan Iskandar Shah (Hugh Low Street), right opposite Yin Yau Kui Hakka Noodles, and Gerbang Malam arch entrance.

This has been my family favourite curry noodle place for some years now :-)
Thanks to ipohchai.com for the map below.

The new shop, which moved to its present location 3-4 years back.

Yummmm ... our bowls of hot dipping sauce (darn goooood!) and a bowl of "liu", which included charsiew, chicken, siewyoke et al.

LK chose (What I thought was sacrilegious) the Chee-suy aka Soup variety, and it was actually really good.

Here's a large bowl of that epic curry noodles ... I like hor-fun, but many prefer the mee-hoon/mee variety.

Kon Curry style ... Dry curry. Mega!!

Ain't cheap ... our five large bowls of noodles and a bowl of "liu" came up to RM$45, but this is what dreams are made of ... the BEST curry noodles in Malaysia!

My Oldham Hall bro, ET, actually drove up all the way from KL for this meal, and all of us thought it was well worth the journey :-)

Tambun Kee 888 Pomelo - Ipoh

Wikipedia ... Pomelos are sold in front of Sam Poh Tong, along Gopeng Road (the old Route 1 that links the towns in Perak and neighbouring states). These stalls cater mainly for tourists driving into Ipoh.

No trip to Ipoh would be complete without stopping by at the pomelo stalls and be entertained by the quick-talkin' ladies hawking ... pomelos!

Found this description online ... Like grapefruits, Pomelo can range from almost seedless to very seedy, from juicy to dry, from sweet to sour. It is sweeter than a grapefruit and can be eaten fresh.
Pomelos are especially popular for Chinese New Year and 'Mid-Autumn Festival'. The Chinese believe the delectable Pomelo is a sign of prosperity and good fortune - good things will happen if they eat it.

Best curry fish head in Ipoh - Up & Up Restaurant, Wisma Kinta

Add: Wisma Kinta, Jalan Yang Kalsom - Ipoh, Perak
Tel: +605 255 6478

One evening, we decided to do a 24-hour road trip to Ipoh ... :-) This time, unlike the past, it was a quality and focussed makan trip rather then my usual quantity makan trip! J's folks took us to Wisma Kinta, home of Ipoh's oldest elevator (which was not running), where we took the lift up to Up & Up Restaurant. What looked like a rather humble air-conditioned eatery, housed the BEST fish head curry I have had in some time.

Mind you, this place has been operating for over 30 years, ask those with Ipoh-roots, they know!

Divine!! Tangy, hot, firm to bite ... marvellous!

Sambal prawns were spicy and yummy ... and I was genuinely impressed how good the pickled pig trotters were!

Vegetables were fresh and crunchy ... and I am so glad Aunty Y ordered the Foo Yong Egg too, excellent.

The verdict ... a brilliant meal, and wonderful company simply made this even more amazing. We will be back, Ipoh isn't just 'hawker food haven', there are excellent restaurants too!!

Happy Chinese New Year - Ipoh pai-nien

Time to pai-nien and pay a CNY visit to my Dai Yi (Tai Yee) in Ipoh ... Delicious food as always, though I really miss the Lap Mei Fan from 2007!

Ang Ku Kuih - Home made and perfect!

Their home grown durian, the tree beared over 20 fruits this year ... Wow!
Nope, I didn't try any durian ... burp!

Cousins!

Sisters and ... family :-)

Kong Heng and Thean Chun (Never realised it was 'fondly' known as the Hall Of Mirrors) are a pair of legendary kopi-shops in Ipoh, located side by side. There are LOTS of stalls, but noted below are some of our favourite ones.. We just couldn't resist stopping by Ipoh en route to the OTHER eating mecca, Penang!
