Indomie is not Ibumie - Mi Goreng from Malaysia

I am a wee bit confused ... this is Ibumie, NOT Indomie. But doesn't the packaging look ... the same!?

Found a nice little comparison here ... Mi Goreng Wars!

New home of Bak Kut Teh - Berkeley Gardens, Klang

This is Berkeley Gardens in Klang :-) Its located at the "end" of the Federal Highway, at the "entrance" to Klang town. It happens to be where me and my brothers grew up, and I have very fond memories of this place.

BKT: Ah Her and Samy
Add: 17, Ground Floor, Jalan Angsa, Taman Berkeley, 41150 Klang
Tel: +6012-3701217 (Ah Her), or +6016 690 6515 (Ah Long)
Review: SmallKuching.com

Recommended by KYS (Fellow ex-Berkeleyite!), this was to be the 2nd BKT I had for the day (The 1st being Mo Sang Kor below!). Yes, decided to give my porky-needs a little treat, on what was to be the last day of my holiday back home ... Perhaps I went at the "end of the pot", but I didn't find it to be too spectacular. However, I do trust the tastebuds of KYS, and will make a return visit there one day!

As I was driving through my old neck of the woods, I spotted this interesting restaurant serving FRIED PORRIDGE, which I know Bangsar Babe recently blogged about! If you must know, its located at Lorong Lang, Berkeley.

OK back to BKT ... On a previous occasion, I had enjoyed the BKT here very much. This is the shop lot at the end of the row, and its known simply as Pao Xiang. There's a really good write-up here, by Precious Pea, which even lists all the outets (Yes, it has reached the lofty heights of having an outlet at Pavilion KL and even One Utama!).

BKT: Mo Sang Kor, Berkeley Gardens
Add: 41, Lebuh Bangau, Taman Berkeley, Klang.

Review: Motormouth from Ipoh

Funny how there are now multiple BKT joints along the road which I had previously known to have some 4D shops, a little temple and a newsagent where I bought my Panini football stickers!

A really delicious breakfast on my last day in Malaysia ...

Many have asked me, which is the best BKT in Klang. My answer used to be one of these places (depending on which day of the week you asked me!) ...

Telok Pulai Pottery BKT - Taman Rashna, near Menara Trend/ING
Sam Mei - Pandamaran, Klang of course
Seng Huat - Under the bridge, Klang town
Xheng Lee - Opposite the old (burnt down!) Great Wall, Klang town
Tasusia Port Klang BKT - Port Klang town, this place serves many other dishes which sometimes even outshine their BKT!

However, all I say now is, each and every Klang boy has their personal favourite, so it really depends :-)

Bak Kut Teh - Pandamaran v Berkeley Gardens, Klang

I had a score to settle one day when I was home ... Which BKT is better?
The BKT joint near Balai Polis Pandamaran, Klang (Known as Sam Mei) or Berkeley's really famous Pao Xiang? In fact, it was meant to be a 3-way shoot-out, but Xheng Lee (Near Pawagam Sri Intan, opposite the old Great Wall in Klang town) was closed.

Verdict from my little blind test ...
Sam Mei (the photo on the left) beats the really famous Pao Xiang (The right photo), as it is more fragrant, and has a flavour that can only be described as ... strong!

Macallan 30 years ... The finest whisky ever?

Thanks to TC for the fine whisky tasting session we enjoyed in Hong Kong one night some months ago ... I was very eagerly waiting to try the Mac 30 :-)

Laphroaig "30" years to start :-) Medicinal and perhaps the oddest single-malt I had ever tasted!

Glenfiddich "30" and the great value Highland Park "25" were much more accessible and good ...

But then ... it was time for The Best! Macallan 30 generally retails at between 800 USD - 1,000 USD or so I have been told! Not ever seen one in the "regular" duty-frees and off-license shops I go to!

Macallan.com describes it ... This legendary Single Malt is Triple Cask matured for a minimum of 30 years in a unique, complex combination of Exceptional Oak Casks; Spanish oak casks seasoned with sherry, American oak casks seasoned with sherry and American oak casks seasoned with bourbon. This delivers an extraordinarily smooth, delicate yet complex Single Malt.

Carefully pouring the pale gold nectar ... and boy was it good and worth the wait! Smooth ... strong ... so smooooth. I was left speechless :-)

Baked beans shoot-out - Heinz v Libbys

Hmmm, decided to give Libby's a go!

Libby's - Product of the UAE
Heinz - Made in UK

So ... which one comes up tops?

Threw together my usual minced pork, sliced mushroom, beaten egg stir-fried with baked beans ... and Libby's turned out to be rather bland :-(

Guess I will stick to Heinz's next time!

The Macallan 12 v 18 - Highland single malt Whisky comparison!

One weekend tea-time, we had a brain-wave ... could we tell the difference between Macallan 12 and Macallan 18?

Price comparison: The "18 year" vintage costs about 150% more then the "12 year". For example, KLIA (KL Airport duty-free) would currently retail the "12 year" at RM$190.
Colour: Experts describe the "18" as much darker, but I noticed they were of a rather similar amber-shade
Nose: The "18" has a clearly more powerful scent to it ... a hint of the magic to come!
Taste: Simply marvellous, we could both clearly tell that the "18" is more powerful, flavoursome and best of all ... clearly SMOOTHER then the "12". Taking a slow drink, it is so easy to enjoy the "18" though I have to say the "12" is the king of "12 year whiskies", when compared with other brands like Famous Grouse, Glenmorangie etc. When I "downed" the "18" rapidly, it still left no trace of "burning" on the throat... Marvellous!

Wikipedia on Macallan ... The Macallan is a single malt Scotch whisky, produced at Macallan Distillery near Easter Elchies House, at Craigellachie in the Speyside region. Originally, The Macallan was only matured in oak sherry casks brought to the distillery from Jerez, Spain.

Yik Mun v E&L - Best Chicken Chop in Tanjung Malim?

Went to visit Tg Malim again one weekend, and was over-the-moon to see both E&L and Yik Mun open for business, as E&L was closed when I last visited on CNY Day 3 . It was time for the definitive Hainanese Chicken Chop Shoot Out!

E&L's service is sloowwwww. It is also rather likely that they are not opened on the day which you visit, as business is done at a really leisurely pace!

What must have been a half hour wait for our chop ... was well worth it! RM$10 buys you a succulent, and lovingly charcoal-grilled piece of chicken chop, served with hand-cut chips and a dissapointing white cream-sauce. I find it hard to believe that at this price-point, it was served with 2 slices of toast and some really creamy butter.

We then quickly went over to the legendary Yik Mun, to have their version of Chicken Chop. On this particular occassion, the chicken was slightly dry, perhaps a tad over-fried (Unlike the grilled perfection at its less illustrious neighbour), but the sauce with a hint of Lea & Perrins and Oyster Sauce, and mashed potatoes more then covered up for it! At RM$13, it happens to be a little pricier then E&L's.

I have to say that E&L actually wins in terms of "chicken only", but in terms of the overall dish (Which after all is the purpose of this HCC @ Hainanese Chicken Chop shoot-out!) ...
Yik Mun Tanjung Malim has MY vote as BEST HCC IN MALAYSIA!

Whatever it is, whichever you fancy, this section of the old trunk road on the North-South, does have two of the finest chicken chop eateries in the country :-) Well worth a visit!

Which do you prefer? Tiger or Heineken!?

Taste test conducted at ... Boon Wah @ Berkeley Gardens, Klang
The night started with some Guinness ...

But most of us settled on Heineken!

Some clever joe said "I bet I could tell the difference between Tiger v Heineken" ... Two minutes later, they were both poured into similar glasses, I closed my eyes, and gulped both.
Guess what, I was right! No problem :-) and I have to admit I have a preference of the Asia Pacific Brewery (Singapore) concoction ... Tiger Beer!

My cousin Kai paid a visit to Malaysia ... so Aunty Chin and Uncle Jean Marc hosted a dinner at the Si Family 'regular' Greenview in PJ, in honour oh him. Yummy!

Some big fans of Greenview Seafood ...

Ps. Uncle Jean Marc and myself did a mini 'blind test' on two brews of Carlsberg ... the STANDARD one won! The 160th Anniversary Edition was a wee bit too bitter.
