Our choice, beef and chicken mixed Fajitas, 55 AED ++

A generous portion, enough for one glutton ... and it was simply magnificent. Tender, very tasty, juicy and delicious dips to go alongside. Best meal since I arrived!!

Chicken Briyani, Gad - Khalidiya, Abu Dhabi

What did I buy for 25 AED (RM$25) from Gad Restaurant one evening?

Add: P.O. Box 32177, Khalidiya
Tel: +971 2 667 5445

I was surprised how HUGE the portion was, in fact I ate it over two days!

Pity the bread wasn't very tasty (My preconception was that there would be some super yummy local breads here - That would come true in a later meal at Lebanon Flower Grill, near Gad, where they serve incredible warm bread) ... but that wasn't the case with this particular meal. I did like the chicken though, and was so impressed by how huge the TWO thighs were. The rice was decent, as was the soup.

Overall... satisfying :-)

Sunset over the Corniche, Abu Dhabi

As I walked out of Khalidiyah Street, towards the Corniche or waterfront of Abu Dhabi, on my first evening here ...

I was greeted by this desert sunset :-) Lucky I brought my Nikon D80 along. Gotta protect it from all the dust though!

How much is a Krispy Kreme Doughnut?

Wanna keep cool in the 40+ degrees C heat, and its only early summer here (Wait till it gets to the mad 50s in August-September!), look no further then the many malls here in Abu Dhabi!

Khalidiyah Mall only recently opened, and has a wealth of shops, and an incredible carpark filled with the latest AMG Mercs, M-powered BMWs, all the S-models from Audi you can think of, as well as American SUVs which probably don't sell very well these days in their native country!

Location: Level A, Khalidiyah Mall
Tel: +971 2 635 455

Dunno how much a Krispy Kreme is in Malaysia, but here it is 4 AED or roughly RM$4. Yummmm ... I struggled to not eat the fella before taking these photos :-)

One more shot before I scoffed down the donut ... this simple glazed donut was sinfully sweet, but sooooooo very delicious. Perfectly glazed!

I quite like this mall, there are a number of shops, from perfumeries, to western brand-names such as Nike , Body Shop et al, and a large food court upstairs, as well as the large Lulu Supermarket (or was that Hypermarket?).

Golden Fork, Khalidiyah - Abu Dhabi, UAE

Sorry for lack of posts of late, it has been hectic ... but I shall endeavour to keep posting, albeit it will be from a world faraway :-) Yes, greetings from Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates!

Food hunting here is unlike Malaysia in many ways, especially in choice, meat type and the cost, but I shall leave my future posts to do the talking :-) Here's one of my first meals locally!

Located: Near Sheraton Khalidiya, Khalidiya Gardens
Tel: +971 26 673 121

Golden Fork , serves a variety of food mainly focussing on its Filipino roots, is actually rather reasonably priced, compared to many of the restaurants in AD, this meal of Egg Fried Rice with BBQ Chicken cost me 15 AED, which is basically 1:1 with Malaysian RM, ie RM$15. It was really delicious, tasty chicken, but o' so average rice (Which I will have to get used to whilst I haven't unpacked my wok!).

I like Etihad!

Etihad flies from Kuala Lumpur to Abu Dhabi, direct. In just shy of 7 hours you will be at your destination, arriving just past midnight local time. The food was really decent, wine was OK, but what was best was the video entertainment onboard :-)

Many miles from home ...
I have to say that Etihad's visual entertainment system is the best I have ever used on any airlines, in any class! Wow :-) The sheer number of movies, that allow you to go to any part of the film, and an excellent information system (Such as the flight path below), is quite mind-boggling!

Pit Access at Sepang - Porsche Cup v Lamborghini

Thanks to TW, for an all-access day to Sepang's pits :-) Here're my efforts with my Nikon D80, and Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 as well as my trusty Nikkor 55-200mm "value" VR zoom!

Sven of The Instructors had invited TW to help shoot the training session he had arranged, what a treat!

Lets get closer!

As the Porsche Cup heads out, so do we!

We dashed around the marshall-lane / inner-lane of Sepang, finding various corners and vantage points on a very VERY hot day!
We caught some action of other cars on the track too, namely another Porsche and a Lambo too.

The world famous "payung" ... our grandstand!
All access means the hallowed pits which the mighty teams such as Brawn, Ferrari and McLaren use each F1 season, and these floors would have been walked on by Schumie, Hamilton, JB and the like!

Really up close and personal with SH's gorgeous and powerful Porsche Cup GT :-)

Lets go!

Mighty sound ... Lamborghini's raging bull!
Two more shots before the noon session began! Must have been over 42 degrees C on track today...

Best Penang Assam Laksa in town - SS2 Pasar Malam

As the sun sets on a Monday evening over SS2, in Petaling Jaya (Across the road from KTZ, Jalan SS2/67) ...

The queues have already formed for what is possibly the finest Assam Laksa in town. We waited for at least 20 minutes, having picked up a plastic tag with a number on it (efficient queueing system, eh! Fair too!) and eventually getting a place to seat on the shared table alongside a drain (It's worth it!!) ...

RM$4 for a small portion, which is rather generous, or add 50 cents more for a larger bowl. Add a further 50 cents extra for more noodles, and RM$1.50 more for "extra fish"! SUPERB! Perfectly balanced, well cooked noodles, delicious broth, and chunky pieces of fish. The customer service with a smile is wonderful too, we like!!

Chrysanthemum - Odd colour!

We were at a street stall in Klang recently, and bought what we thought was an odd but pretty chrysanthemum ... turns out it was dyed, eeep! Started dripping "blue dye" juices after a few days, alas!

Steamboat with home-made fish paste

Slurrrpp ... nothing like a home-cooked family steamboat :-)
Best of all, the fish-paste for the tau-foo pok and fishballs were hand-made ... Ikan parang or Mackeral Fish or Tenggiri was lovingly and patiently dissected, wow!
ps - Found a really good recipe online, cookingmomster's homemade fish paste.

Departure Lounge, Solaris - Mont Kiara

One lazy Sunday afternoon, YT suggested we visited Departure Lounge for some brunch.

Add: Departure Lounge - 10 Jalan Solaris 4, Solaris Mont Kiara, KL
Tel: +603 6203 0362
Relaxed, unique, chilled out ... we like this place :-)
DIMW - Do It My Way, All Day Breakfast :-)

RM$10.90 for a 5 item DIMW, or RM$12.90 for my 7 item DIMW ... I love English-style fry-ups, and this one's halal too!
Take your pick from ... Mushrooms, Scrambled 0r fried eggs, Fish fingers, Chicken sausages, Hash browns (Really good!), Pancakes, Turkey Ham, et al.

Grilled chicken sandwich, RM$11.90, looked really good too...

The mushroom soup, RM$3.90, was good value. Coffees, cappucinos, lattes and teas here are decent too.

A and B arrived later, and seemed to enjoy their food too :-)

Superbad (2007) with McLovin!

Source: DVD (Ipoh)

Thanks to NWJ for the loan of this disc, and recommending this hilarious effort...

Written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, this 2007 film had me in stitches!! It is absolutely rude with vulgar descriptions, language and depictions, watch at your own risk!!
Wonderfully acted by the likes of ...
Jonah Hill ... Seth
Michael Cera ... Evan
Christopher Mintz-Plasse ... Fogell
Bill Hader ... Officer Slater
and the inimitable Seth Rogen ... Officer Michaels.
IMDB.com
Seth and Evan are best friends, inseparable, navigating the last weeks of high school. Usually shunned by the popular kids, Seth and Evan luck into an invitation to a party, and spend a long day, with the help of their nerdy friend Fogell, trying to score enough alcohol to lubricate the party and inebriate two girls, Jules and Becca, so they can kick-start their sex lives and go off to college with a summer full of experience and new skills. Their quest is complicated by Fogell's falling in with two inept cops who both slow and assist the plan. If they do get the liquor to the party, what then? Is sex the only rite of passage at hand?
Memorable quotes (Warning! RUDE!!!)
Evan: I heard she got breast reduction surgery.
Seth: What? That's like slapping God across the face for giving you a beautiful gift.
Evan: She had back problems, man.
And here's a brilliant one from the fake ID scene ...

Fogell: Yo guys! Sup?
Seth: Fogell, where have you been, man? You almost gave me a goddamn heart attack. Let me see it. Did you pussy out or what?
Fogell: No noooo, man. I got it; it is flawless. Check it!
Evan: [examining the fake ID] Hawaii. All right, that's good. That's hard to trace, I guess. Wait... you changed your name to... McLovin?
Fogell: Yeah.
Evan: McLovin? What kind of a stupid name is that, Fogell? What, are you trying to be an Irish R&B singer?
Fogell: Naw, they let you pick any name you want when you get down there.
Seth: And you landed on McLovin...
Fogell: Yeah. It was between that or Muhammed.
Seth: Why the FUCK would it be between THAT or Muhammed? Why don't you just pick a common name like a normal person?
Fogell: Muhammed is the most commonly used name on Earth. Read a fucking book for once.
Evan: Fogell, have you actually ever met anyone named Muhammed?
Fogell: Have YOU actually ever met anyone named McLovin?
Seth: No, that's why you picked a dumb fucking name!
Fogell: Fuck you.
Seth: Gimme that. All right, you look like a future pedophile in this picture, number 1. Number 2: it doesn't even have a first name, it just says "McLovin"!
Evan: What? One name? ONE NAME? Who are you? Seal?
Seth: Fogell, this ID says that you're 25 years old. Why wouldn't you just put 21, man?
Fogell: Seth, Seth, Seth. Listen up, ass-face: every day, hundreds of kids go into the liquor store with fake IDs, and every single one says they're 21. Pssh, how many 21 year olds do you think there are in this town? It's called fucking strategy, all right?
Evan: Stay calm, okay? Let's not lose our heads. It's... it's a fine ID; it'll... it's gonna work. It's passable, okay? This isn't terrible. I mean, it's up to you, Fogell. This guy is either gonna think 'Here's another kid with a fake ID' or 'Here's McLovin, a 25 year-old Hawaiian organ donor'. Okay? So what's it gonna be?
Fogell: [grinning] ... I am McLovin!
Seth: No you're not. No one's McLovin. McLovin's never existed because that's a made up dumb FUCKING FAIRY TALE NAME, YOU FUCK!

A story of pork, vino and cigars - Vintry, Damansara Heights

All the new about landslides in this quiet area of Damansara Hts has not dampened our spirits to visit Vintry once again :-)

Add: Vintry @ Bukit Damansara Heights - 130 Jalan Kasah, Medan Damansara, KL

Is Rib Shop no more? Looks like its now Ribs by Vintry!

We just spent the perfect late-tea/early dinnertime this year, chilled out, good value, excellent combination of vino + cigar + meats!

Our choice of wine, was a well priced Cab Sauv, RM$66, Stone Cellars by Beringer (2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, from the Napa Valley of California). It went really well with the siew-yoke, ribs AS WELL as the cigar!

Roast meat ... Siew Yoke , its time for "starters", 100g worth. Nice mustard dip alongside!

This easy puffing RM$48 Romeo and Julieta No.2 was from the friendly folk at Embershoppe
Add: Lot G39B, Ground Floor, The Curve,Jln PJU 7/3, Mutiara Damansara, PJ

Finally, at 6pm the kitchen opened, and soon after ... we were served our "mains" ... BBQ Pork Ribs, enough for 2, served on a REALLY delicious bed of mashed potatoes. Succulent, tasty, and perfectly to be eaten with our fingers!
The total for all the above was RM$160 ... bargain!

Beware of parking attendant and jockey thugs, near TTDI Plaza

BEWARE! Jockey / Parking Attendant thugs are operating all around the vicinity of TTDI Plaza, even in this quiet front street ... Disgusting!

How could anyone collect parking fees of RM$10 for parking in a proper parking space on a public road at night? GRRRRrrrrr!

Is every Proton Juara ever built here in Klang?

Who in Proton would have thought of producing the Juara? Oh boy...

Wikipedia ... The Proton Juara was a microvan produced by Malaysian carmaker Proton between 2001 and 2003. The design and production of the Juara marked a notable departure from Proton's traditional preference towards saloons and hatchbacks, making the Juara the first van to be manufactured by Proton.
In its marketing campaign, PROTON decided that the JUARA is essentially a Mini-MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) and became the platform in its advertising and promotional campaign
The van's name was derived from the Malay language, meaning "champion".

Check out the number of Juaras in this used car dealer in Klang, heh heh! Must be a "Juara specialist dealership"!

What really transpired ...
The Juara's market performance was generally poor, with production stopped a few months after its introduction in 2001.
However, the production for a small number (around 1,000 units) was resumed in mid-2002. The sales figures remained so disappointing that in 2003, Proton discontinued the production of the Juara altogether. When it was first introduced in 2001, the price tag of the Proton Juara was around RM42,000 to RM52,000. Less than a year later, the price was reduced to RM35,000 but it still failed to attract the consumers in Malaysia.
The Juara has, however, found a niche market among small traders who found that the Juara was suitable for transporting medium loads. The Juara has also generated much interest among select enthusiast groups who view "THE BOX" as a technological marvel.

Hailam Kopitiam, Damansara Perdana - Bad food & worse customer service!

We had an incredibly dissapointing visit to Hailam Kopitiam at Damansara Perdana over the weekend, not only was the food bad (Check out eggs below!) but the customer service was so frustrating (Long wait, nasi lemak never arrived, staff who had no clue what we were talking about, the list goes on!).

Add: 32-1, PJU 8/5G, Bandar Damansara Perdana, PJ
Tel: +6017 693 3357

The disaster started soon after we placed our order, and got a carrot juice instead of the dragonfruit juice we ordered, but I thought things would get better. Boy was I wrong!

Wanna wait half an hour for your nasi lemak, which would then never arrive, when the store is only reasonably full with people on a Sunday morning? Come on over to Damansara Perdana's Hailam Kopitiam!

And here was the last straw!
Half Boiled Eggs!? Looks more like hard boiled ... Pathetic. I should have stayed home to have this!

ps - Looks like I'm not the only one who has such a bad experience at this place!
ds41ntx.blogspot.com ... dWife and I stubbled across a branch of New Hailam Kopitiam when were out shopping for a bed for Lil Saint near Tesco Ampang. I was a bit enthusiastic about it coz I thought it would be like the famous hainan coffee at the Imbi wet market.
To my dismay, it sucks!!!!!! The coffee sucks!!!! The toast is over toasted. The butter was just slapped right into the centre of the toast making the first few bites as dry as the dessert. The combination of kaya and butter is so not balanced that dW didn't even finish hers.
The only thing that was nice was the properly timed half boiled eggs. But that too when combined with the over-toasted toasts makes the whole experience the once in a lifetime thing. Try it once and never want to go back.
The menu is pretty much like that of Old Town Kopitiam. Price is about the same too. Bottom line, I'll never go back again.

Time to tee off at The Club, Bandar Utama's 9 hole golf course

We had a round at Bandar Utama's 9 hole golf course, The Club, recently ...

Was OK ... then not OK off the tee box. Grrrr!

Bang!

The conditions here have improved, and where else can you have a leisurely pressure-free 9-hole round for two persons at under RM$100?

One more time :-)

Tennis serve - Captured with our Canon G10

Best curry noodles - Xin Quan Fang Ipoh, Oldham Hall reunion

Add: Ipoh town ... Jalan Sultan Iskandar Shah (Hugh Low Street), right opposite Yin Yau Kui Hakka Noodles, and Gerbang Malam arch entrance.

This has been my family favourite curry noodle place for some years now :-)
Thanks to ipohchai.com for the map below.

The new shop, which moved to its present location 3-4 years back.

Yummmm ... our bowls of hot dipping sauce (darn goooood!) and a bowl of "liu", which included charsiew, chicken, siewyoke et al.

LK chose (What I thought was sacrilegious) the Chee-suy aka Soup variety, and it was actually really good.

Here's a large bowl of that epic curry noodles ... I like hor-fun, but many prefer the mee-hoon/mee variety.

Kon Curry style ... Dry curry. Mega!!

Ain't cheap ... our five large bowls of noodles and a bowl of "liu" came up to RM$45, but this is what dreams are made of ... the BEST curry noodles in Malaysia!

My Oldham Hall bro, ET, actually drove up all the way from KL for this meal, and all of us thought it was well worth the journey :-)

Tambun Kee 888 Pomelo - Ipoh

Wikipedia ... Pomelos are sold in front of Sam Poh Tong, along Gopeng Road (the old Route 1 that links the towns in Perak and neighbouring states). These stalls cater mainly for tourists driving into Ipoh.

No trip to Ipoh would be complete without stopping by at the pomelo stalls and be entertained by the quick-talkin' ladies hawking ... pomelos!

Found this description online ... Like grapefruits, Pomelo can range from almost seedless to very seedy, from juicy to dry, from sweet to sour. It is sweeter than a grapefruit and can be eaten fresh.
Pomelos are especially popular for Chinese New Year and 'Mid-Autumn Festival'. The Chinese believe the delectable Pomelo is a sign of prosperity and good fortune - good things will happen if they eat it.

Best curry fish head in Ipoh - Up & Up Restaurant, Wisma Kinta

Add: Wisma Kinta, Jalan Yang Kalsom - Ipoh, Perak
Tel: +605 255 6478

One evening, we decided to do a 24-hour road trip to Ipoh ... :-) This time, unlike the past, it was a quality and focussed makan trip rather then my usual quantity makan trip! J's folks took us to Wisma Kinta, home of Ipoh's oldest elevator (which was not running), where we took the lift up to Up & Up Restaurant. What looked like a rather humble air-conditioned eatery, housed the BEST fish head curry I have had in some time.

Mind you, this place has been operating for over 30 years, ask those with Ipoh-roots, they know!

Divine!! Tangy, hot, firm to bite ... marvellous!

Sambal prawns were spicy and yummy ... and I was genuinely impressed how good the pickled pig trotters were!

Vegetables were fresh and crunchy ... and I am so glad Aunty Y ordered the Foo Yong Egg too, excellent.

The verdict ... a brilliant meal, and wonderful company simply made this even more amazing. We will be back, Ipoh isn't just 'hawker food haven', there are excellent restaurants too!!

Beware! Foto Golden at TTDI guarantees crap service!

Add: Foto Golden - 30 Jalan Tun Mohd Fuad 1, Taman Tun Dr. Ismail
Tel: +603 7728 2422

I wanted to do a 6R print of a photo for a really nice picture frame bestowed upon us by C&C, FBB, LL and M2 ... and woe is me, I stepped into Taman Tun Dr Ismail's Foto Golden. The service was rude, indifferent and downright EXPENSIVE too.

Ended up going back to Bukit Tinggi, Klang, to do the print. Half the price, done in ten minutes, and best of all ... done with a smile too :-)

Note: YES! I am that pi$%ed off, I don't remember ever doing a photo-less post, but I had to warn all those who want to print photos in TTDI to beware!

The best Goreng Pisang in Klang? Quite possibly at Bayu Perdana!

What are all these people queueing up for at Bayu Perdana, near Taman Chi Liung in Klang?

We had heard legends of this mythical goreng pisang stall, and my mum reinforced that it was good and she had heard that it was in a place called "Bayu Perdana" in Klang. Upon checking through a Klang makan forum , we went hunting!

Add: End of Jalan Batu Unjur 6, Bayu Perdana, Klang
Located: Down the road from Restaurant Chia Siang, near the "u-turn" off the main road

Patience is a virtue ... We waited about ten minutes, but that was on a week day afternoon. Be prepared for a wait of up to 30 minutes, if you believe what was written in the Klang forum! Two wok-fulls of goreng pisang were being managed by the 2 chefs, and these woks sold out in five minutes!

Simple, cheap (RM$1 buys you FIVE pieces of magic!), crispy, sweet and delicious!

Here's what our RM$3 portion looked like when we brought them home, we couldn't resist scoffing on 2 pieces in the car :-) Magnificent!

ps - I could't resist taking home one pack of Nasi Lemak Bungkus (RM$1) as well, which turned out to be quite excellent too! Sweet style sambal, fragrant rice, but missing kacang putih to make this EVEN more perfect!

Hazey sunset over Klang

Whipped out my rather rarely used AF-S DX VR Zoom-NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED recently, to take these shots over hazey and polluted Klang. These shots were taken at 06:49pm one evening.

At full 200mm zoom ...

Bak Chang from Tanjung Malim

I love the tradition of exchanging Bak Changs, I remember the first one I had "this season" from Aunty Dr L in Klang ... Following that, a recent and very memorable trip to TM meant we brought home half a dozen of Aunty BG's creations!

Kwai Feh Lychee Liqueur - Our simple lychee martini!

RM$46 from KLIA or LCCT, duty-free, this makes a really refreshing drink :-)

Kwai Feh Lychee Liqueur ... A light pink liqueur with the essence of fresh lychee fruit in a frosted Oriental-style bottle. Soft, clean and delicious, this adds a touch of the exotic to cocktails.

Our recipe...
a) Three lychees from a can of lychees
b) About 3 inches of lychee juice from the beforementioned can
c) 5 small cubes of ice
d) One inch of Kwai Feh liqueur
... ENJOY!

Three Hills - 2002 Shiraz, Margaret River Australia

Sinki Restaurant, Dengkil near Cyberjaya

Add: No. 96, Jln Besar, 43800 Dengkil, Selangor
Tel: +603 8768 8268

An obscure tai-chau restaurant in ... Dengkil, about ten mins from Cyberjaya. Spotted by TW and AY!

Some cincau to start, anyone?

Potently hot fried fish ... fresh and perfectly cooked!

Simple stir fried vege...

Tofu with fishballs ... Nice and "ching"

Pork Knuckle ala Sinki ... with a Thai style sauce, really good!

All the above came up to about RM$75, washed down well with some JW Blue Label we brought along ... Deeelish!
