Twister Orange by Tropicana

My breakfast this morning, RM$2.40 from your local Shell gas station convenience store!

From the USA Tropicana website ... Tropicana Twister® is the delicious juice drink that comes in twisted flavor combinations like Tropical Fruit Fury and Strawberry Kiwi Cyclone. Single-Serve plastic bottles.

History lesson from Tropicana's corporate site ...
Tropicana was founded in 1947 by Anthony Rossi as a Florida fruit packaging business. In 1954 Rossi pioneered a pasteurization process for orange juice. He started his own fruit packing business and shipped jars of sectioned fruit and fresh juice to hotels and restaurants in refrigerated trucks. One of his first customers, the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, had a standing order for 1,000 gallons of juice and fruit jars each week.

Mini-me Chivas Regal

Hmm, what's in this little box?

A miniature bottle Chivas Regal on a swing-rack!

Mercedes S65 AMG

This is one performance ubermobile! Spotted at Damansara Heights ... slurrrrrrrp!

I checked on Wikipedia ... What's AMG?
Mercedes-AMG is the high performance division of the Mercedes-Benz car company. Mercedes-Benz acquired majority interest in AMG in 1998.
AMG or Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach was founded in 1967 as AMG Motorenbau und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH (AMG Engine Production and Development, Ltd.) by former Mercedes engineers Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher in a town near Stuttgart called Großaspach."AMG" is an abbreviation that stands for: Hans Werner Aufrecht (A) and Eberhard Melcher (M) who were partners, while Aufrecht’s birthplace of Großaspach (G) supplied the third letter in the company name.

And for this particular W221 'supercar' ... The S 63 AMG and the S 600 makes the same sprint in about 4.6 seconds. The twin-turbo V12 in the S 65 AMG is also found in Mercedes roadster SL 65 AMG.

XIII NAM 88 plate - Cool!

Spotted this late one night near Damansara ... nice! XIII NAM 88 :-) on a S350 Benzy.

Be prepared to wait ... this place is popular, but it certainly is worth the 30 minute wait :-) we went through!

Gorgeous! This made all the difference ... the sauce, a blend of sesame, chilli paste, spring onions and lots of fried onions.

WH liked the Sancha sauce ala Taiwan ...

Fish noodles ala Pulau Ketam ...

The sets were great, but the meats (My fave = Lamb, the beef and pork was good too) were incredible ... so fresh and tasty when cooked in the hotpot (Each one gets their own hotpot ... sort of like a hygienic and mini-lok lok!!). Great concept!! And the speed of the induction heater, amazing ... no more ten minute waits for the soup to boil, you now only have to wait a minute or two!

Here're some images of our hotpots from start to finish ... we took the Herbal and Ginseng soup varieties (There's also Tom Yam). Delicious!

One of us decided to brave it and have a Ice Honey Chlorophyll .... eep! I stuck to a very fresh and delicious Double Orange Juice ... followed by Ice Green Tea. Slurp, refreshing!

Thanks again to W and H for the yummy treat ... RM$140 well spent, we were so full up! And tummies were so happy!

Ps - Indulged in some pretty hardcore makan with this foursome over Sunday ...

Hmm, wonder how I can submit this to 'Thumbnails RM$50 contest' in The Star!?

Launch - Prima Setapak II by UOA

Attended the launch of UOA's new development, Prima Setapak II in the Setapak area of Kuala Lumpur. I wonder if it should present good rental yields, being closed to University TAR?

One can choose from the Gombak view or KLCC/City view (the latter being RM$10-20k more expensive). Some units I viewed ranged from 1,400 - 2,000 sq.ft and were priced around the RM$300k mark.

Highlight of the visit? The food which was free-flowing ... Nasi Lemak, Char Kuay Teow, Satay, Roti Canai, Ice Cream, Ice Kachang, etc! Was rather good too ... Catered for by Asia Garden Caterer. Details noted below:-

Austin Seven wearing A602 registration

Stunning vintage Austin Seven with an incredible registration plate, A602, spotted in PJ near PJ Hilton ... Wow! Estimated age? Around 90 years old!

Wikipedia ... The Austin 7 was a vintage car produced from 1922 through to 1939 in the United Kingdom. It was one of the most popular cars ever produced there and wiped out most other British small cars and cyclecars of the early 1920s , its effect on the British market was similar to that of the Model T Ford in the USA.
It was also licensed and copied by companies all over the world.
The first BMW models (BMW Dixi) were licensed Austin 7s, as were the original American Austins.
In France they were made and sold as Rosengarts while in Japan Nissan also used the 7 design as the basis for their original cars, though not under license.
After World War II, many Austin 7s were rebuilt as "specials" including the first Lotus, the Lotus Mk1 which was based on an Austin 7.
Such was the power of the Austin 7 name that the company re-used it for early versions of both the A30 in 1951 and Mini in 1959.

Kelly Tan E Li, will you marry me?

Ah hah ... this is where that 'Will you marry me?' proposal billboard is located ... One evening, on the way to Il Tempio, Ampang, I saw this HUGE billboard!

Source: jokes.stevenwongblog.com
David Tan, an account executive to make an unique proposal for marriage to his girl friend, Kelly Tan during the Valentine day.
The signboard is located along the Damansara-Puchong (LDP) highway.
According to The Star, this whole proposal cost him about RM54,000 (which billboard cost him RM40,000, diamond ring RM14,000).
David, of Petaling Jaya, said putting up the message, which will be there for a month, cost him RM40,000, although it is his family’s line of business.

Il Tempio @ Tamarind Springs, Ampang

As we approached our table ...

Stunning setting :-) all in the heart of Ampang, not so far away from the Zoo! The bread was served so hot (temperature!), delicious when dipped in the virgin olive oil.

We decided to treat ourselves ... Moet & Chandon Champagne (RM$220 - good value!).

Fish Soup (RM$36) - The flavour comes alive when it is eaten with the fish / prawns served separately. Sluro!

Marinated King Prawn (RM$37) - Sashimi/raw prawns, served on a delicious bed of chopped fresh mangoes.

Air Dried Beef (RM$30) - reminds me of the great Jamon of Madrid ... good!

Steamed Cod Fish (RM$48) - Fresh, and perfectly cooked. Lovely kus-kus base as well.

Lobster Tagliatelle (RM$49) - Chef recommended this, and it was good. Perfect al dente (firm to bite) pasta.

Happy Birthday!

Slurp ... time for the Dolci (Desserts).

Chocolate tart with Bitter chocolate sorbet, orange ragout and vanilla sauce (RM$28) ... all went perfectly, but we didn't quite appreciate the vanilla sauce so much. Tasted ginger-y?

And to finish.... Cappuccino (RM$13) and Camomile tea (RM$15).

Juliansi.blogspot.com says ... For that special occasion, this place is perfect. Great staff, super guest chef, and what a nice jungle-esque setting!

Here're some other tim sum dishes which were rather good too ... except the Char Siew Cheong Fun which was a little on the thick side, we would have preferred it more 'transparent' i.e. thinner!

Jumper (2008) - Hayden Christensen again!

Jumper is a film by Doug Liman, who also directed The Boure Identity and Mr & Mrs Smith. So this film had to be good... right?
"Anywhere is possible" ... cool tag line.

Samuel L. Jackson ... Roland
Diane Lane ... Mary Rice

Juliansi.blogspot.com says ... Worth watching, but not the best of endings. Perhaps that was because conceptually it was such a clever film, and somehow just loses its plot ... Jumper II anyone?

Awake (2007) - Hayden Christensen

Source: DVD (SS2)

Hmmm ... yet another Hayden Christensen film? I had purchased this and Jumper at the same time, but didn't realise they shared the same lead!

Tag line from IMDB.com Every year, one in 700 people wake up during surgery. When they planned her husband's murder, they never thought he'd be the one.

Proton Satria Neo

Wikipedia
Satria Mk 1 (1995 - 2005) : The first generation Satria was based a 3-door hatchback on the 1991 Mitsubishi Mirage (Colt outside the Japanese market). Changes were limited to front-end styling and interior from the bigger Wira.
Satria Neo (2006 - present) : The Satria Neo was introduced in June 2006 as a replacement for the first generation Satria. Based on a new platform developed in-house by Proton (with some parts borrowed from the bigger Gen-2 and Waja), the car is currently only available in a three-door hatchback guise. The car was developed at a cost of RM500 million and four years, and was expected by Proton to generate a monthly sales volume of 2,000 to 2,500 units. LEAVING Hainan for Singapore proved to be worthwhile for Wong Sang Hai and to the people of Kemaman. When he bought over the business 66 years ago, little did he know that it would become such a hit with locals and tourists alike.
Hai Peng Coffee Shop was set up by Wong in 1940. It is now run by Elaine Wong, Wong's youngest daughter. Elaine recalls how her father asked her to take over the business when she was living in Canada. She hesitated at first, but eventually agreed when her business over there failed.
When asked about competition, she admitted that while there are many coffees shops around the area, she remains unperturbed. Such is her confidence in her blend of coffee, which uses 100% APS Arabic beans imported from Brazil, Indonesia and Columbia. These special beans are roasted using the Italian roasting method to bring out an aromatic smell and unique taste. In fact, due to overwhelming demand, Hai Peng Coffee Shop has started packaging the coffee and selling them off the shelf.

Nasi Kerabu & Ayam Bakar @ Norra, Terengganu

The best nasi kerabu? You better believe it! Simply awesome :-)
Now if only I can get Ah Siang to part with the GPS coordinates of this place ... haha. All I can say is that its along the road from Kuala Terengganu to Kuantan!

What's Nasi Kerabu?
This is a very healthy malay dish with rice mixed in a combination of traditional ulams and vegetables such as daun kadok, ulam raja, bunga kantan, daun kesom, fresh red onions and other wierd looking leaves that I've never seen. Most of these ingredients are very fragrant. At this hawker stall, their rice is blue in color and in addition to ulams, they sprinkle sweet kerisik (fried grated cocounts) over the rice. With the exception of the rice, nasi kerabu is not cooked or steamed. The ingredients are just mixed with the rice. So, this dish has a very rich natural taste. You must like eating vegetables if you are to enjoy kerabu. The ulams are fresh and you can feel the aroma being released in your mouth as you chew on the kerabu mixture. Very well made. To those of you who like nasi kerabu, this is one more place that you can frequent. As I ate, I realised that many of their patrons are Kelantanese. I can see why they are here....Anyway, if the Kerabu is too light for you, you can opt for some accompaniments.

Nasi Kerabu with Ayam Bakar (The chicken's roasted over charcoal - fabulous!), RM$2.50

An extra helping of that fantastic Ayam Bakar ...

Nasi Kerabu with Beef slices (Tender, and beautifully marinated), RM$2.50

Would you believe the 3 of us, stuffing ourselves with chicken / beef / rice / drinks, only paid slightly over RM$12 for all that delicious food. I love the East Coast!

Keropok Lekor @ Zaleha Embong, Terengganu

One of the better Keropok Lekor along the road home, from Merang to Kuala Terengganu ...

Here's the GPS coordinates according to Siang's Garmin ...

What is it?
A popular and the most visible fried snack in Terengganu, the keropok is made of fish meat, ground to a paste, and mixed with sago. Coming in two main different forms, the long chewy ones are called 'lekor', while the thin, crispy ones are called 'keping'. Keropok is best eaten hot with its special chili dip.

A quick look at the whiteboard will tell you the dives scheduled for your boat that day giving you an idea of what to expect and what lens to assemble on your camera. Full tanks will be waiting for you and at Diver's Den you NEVER have to carry a heavy tank.

The center is managed by The Diver's Den – Mr A.B. Lee (PADI Master Instructor ) - who has been diving in the waters of Redang for the past 17 years. If you are a passionate underwater photographer come dive with him and get great photography tips from him.

Nemo is the Sukma mascot!

Sukan Malaysia or Sukma XII will be held in Terengganu ... 31st May to 9th June, 2008. Check out this poster, heh heh .. that's nemo's head superimposed on ... duh, a tiger?

The Star (29th April 2008)
The turtle, Terengganu’s most popular symbol and sports mascot, is losing its appeal while a fish resembling Nemo, Pixar Studio's animated character, is swimming into the limelight.
Terengganu, which is hosting the Sukma 2008 Games, has introduced the clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) as its mascot, replacing the turtle, which has been synonymous with the state for decades. The new mascot for the Sukma 2008 Games in Terengganu is the clownfish.
“The turtle is too slow. “We prefer the fish because it is more agile and dynamic,” said Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh here yesterday.

“This colourful fish can help project the state’s vibrant tourism industry and scenic islands,” he said, adding that the decision was made by the state executive council at its recent mee-ting.
There are 28 species of clownfish but the most common and the one that looks most like the one in the movie Finding Nemo is the bright orange and white striped Percula clownfish. The movie also featured a turtle called Crush.
When asked whether the move meant that the government was no longer placing importance on turtles, he said:
“Nobody has been more forceful than the present state administration in protecting the turtles. We have gazetted 10 turtle sanctuaries and this reflects our deep commitment.”
Turtle scientist Prof Chan Eng Heng of Kolej Universiti Sains dan Teknologi Malaysia (Kustem) urged the state to reconsider its decision.
She said the move was tantamount to the state turning its back on the creatures, adding that Terengganu, was the only state in the peninsula where turtles nest in good numbers.
“Although the leatherbacks, Olive Ridley and Hawksbill are on the verge of extinction, we still have green turtles,” she said.

Sweet and sour Fish Slices - Yummy!

HOWEVER, the Fan Sui Yip (Stir fried Tapioca leaves) was too veiny and old ... we complained, didn't eat much of it at all, and the 2 boss ladies offered to give us our money back for this. Can't complaint about the customer service, but we declined, as we are such regulars here!

Koryo-Won Korean @ Starhill KL

We like Korean! :-) Seems like I've been enjoying Korean food more and more times these days ... This was actually my first time at Koryo-Won, which is located at the food level of Starhill in KL.

The appetisers are always excellent at Korean restaurants ... we like the fishcake and fruit salad! Mmmmh.

Raw Beef - Perhaps bettered by the one at Kung Jung in Pavilion , which has more pear, lending itself a sweeter taste which I prefer.

The meats at Koryo-Won however ... were really delicious. Nice beef!

Bulgogi ... my favourite dish at Korean places!

Seaweed soup ... and Korean omelette. Pretty good too.

Squid compliments of lady-boss!

Happy Birthday, H :-)

Suunto D4 - New Dive Computer!

Someone's got a new dive comp :-) a Suunto D4!

Here's the D4 as compared with my trusty Suunto Stinger :-)

Suunto D4 as described by Suunto.com
Suunto D4 is all about enjoying your diving experience. Whether you're on your well-earned annual dive holiday or honing your freediving skills, Suunto D4 keeps you informed and aware every meter of the way. Suunto D4 is a full-decompression wristop dive computer designed to put information, ease of use, and style first. Its four operating modes, dive planning and analysis functions, and compatibility with optional Suunto Dive Manager PC software make Suunto D4 a great choice for those who value functionality and ease of use. Suunto D4 comes with a scratch guard that helps to protect the display against scratching.
With its innovative freedive functions and dedicated freedive mode, Suunto D4 is also perfect if you're serious about breath-hold diving. Programmed to sample depth three times a second, Suunto D4 records highly accurate data on the true depth reached. Surface time and depth alarms help you make responsible decisions both in and out of the water.
In both Air and Nitrox mode, the clear, easy-to-read screen can display your current and maximum depth; current time, dive time, and decompression time; and temperature. Audible and visual depth and time alarms warn you when it's time to start your ascent. In Nitrox mode, you can increase your time underwater by adjusting the oxygen content of your gas between 21% and 50% and adjust your PO2 limit between 0.5 and 1.6 bar.
Like other advanced Suunto dive computers, Suunto D4 uses the Suunto RGBM algorithm for decompression calculations. It also allows you to choose between taking traditional safety stops or, with the Deep Stops feature activated, taking your safety stops at depth.
Before diving, the no-stop-time planner helps you prepare for your dive. Enter the planned maximum depth of your dive, and Suunto D4 will tell you how long you can dive before needing a decompression stop. After diving you can instantly review all the data in the logbook. Suunto D4 is also compatible with the optional Suunto Dive manager PC software, which provides more in-depth analysis and graphical representation of all your dives.

Diving @ Redangkalong - Seahorse & Wreck

This was one of my " wanna see's " from this dive outing ... and Ah Siang found the fella :-) At a site only known as 'Touch and Go', we found this beautiful seahorse!

Horsey goes home ...

Redang has a wreck? You bet'cha! At 18m, this ghostly image appears ... I reckon the wreck was at least 40 feet long.

Ah Siang caught these shots of a beautiful Lionfish at the bow (front) of the wreck ...

And, at 9.30am ... Siang showed me why it was the perfect time for that sunburst shot!

As we were about to do our Safety Stop ... here comes a lone (large!) pufferfish ...

Vodka Ribena @ Backyard, Sri Hartamas

Add: 28, Jalan Sri Hartamas 8, KL
Tel: +603 6201 0318
It sure has been a while since my last visit here on New Year's day 2007!

Vodka Ribena @ RM$13.50 each ... Really good! One of the best around :-)

I like Backyard, in a world (Well, Malaysia anyway) where so much is changing and evolving, and places trying to be 'hip' ... Backyard just is! Very popular amongst the pool fanatics, and football maniacs, I simply enjoy a drink here. And tried the food as well for the first time today!

Mutton Dry Curry (Sort of like a Rendang) RM$9.50 - Heavily spiced, and a little too spicy for me.

Singapore Fried Meehoon (RM$9) - Good! Plenty of wok-hay aka Fire!

Indo Fried Rice (RM$10.50) - Really good. Didn't really like the fried chicken wings which accompanied the dish though.

Fried Sausages with Chilli and Onion (RM$8.50) - I was rather dissapointed, as it wasn't particularly tasty, I've had better! But, it wasn't oily ... for a change! So, it was a nice healthier alternative to this dish.

From Backyardpub.com , where propietor Jerry Chong described ...
It was always my dream to own a neighbourhood pub like the ones I used to go to in Sunderland and London. The pub was supposed to be for my retirement, but I sort of jumped the gun.One of the pubs I remember from those days was Frog and Firkin, a famous watering hole in London, and my regular -- Walmer Castle -- a small joint with a pool table where I first got hooked on pool.
The opportunity to take over the Backyard came in 1996. Joan and I were already living in Taman Sri Hartamas and frequenting the pub and we decided to take it up as a new challenge for us. We slogged for six months to give it a new look and improve the food and music...

Tomoe Japanese Restaurant, SS15 Subang Jaya

Add: Tomoe, 1 Jalan SS15/5A, Subang Jaya
Tel: +603 5633 5919

Relatively new Japanese place, opened on the same row as my perennial favourite, Rakuzen. Lets see how it fares on a very rainy evening ...

Really good service, knowledgable staff, real Japanese chef, and nice simple decor ...

Yaki Tamago (RM$3) - Cheap! Pretty good (We like our Tamago cool and slightly sweet) ... nice start to our meal.

Spicy Tuna (RM$15) - Average!

Beef Curry Don (RM$22) - Large portion (You can also opt for a smaller portion), but I was rather dissapointed that it lacked potatoes and carrots. Not the best Curry Don I have had!

Gindara (RM$30) - Slurp. Pretty tasty!

Gosai Tofu (RM$20) - Truly dissapointing, the waitress did warn us that it had some japanese beans in it ... but we went ahead an ordered, this kimchi tasting dish. EEeeeeep! And those beans ... diabolical! Tasted like coffee?

Agedashi Misore Ankake (RM$13) - Hmm, very weird variant of Agedashi Tofu. Sigh, I prefer the original. This one was ovely starchy ... and duh ... odd.

Seafood Fried Rice (RM$16) - The Japanese always do fried rice well, not oily, but lightly fragranced and tasty.

Overall, at RM$137, rather good value, but I miss Rakuzen! Just not my cuppa ... ocha!? :-)
ps - No charge for Hot Ocha, nice touch!

White is the new Black!

A white BMW E46 Saloon spotted at Damansara ...

Hmm, white cars sure are popular these days!
White used to only be popular in the Middle East (perhaps it has to do with white having great reflective properties in the 40-50c heat!), or in very cheap Jap cars locally ... but it is surely making a come back. White cars look great, it helps bring out the shape and contours of the car.

Honda Accord CF4

Honda Accord CF4 with some nice 17" rims ... Spotted in PJ.

This car is about ten years old ... but I think it still looks fresh, espesh in WHITE!

Give way to horses!

I was made to put this on the dashboard of my car when I visited the Bukit Kiara Equestrian Club in KL for the VW Day :-)

Only in Malaysia must one be reminded to ... GIVE WAY TO HORSES!

Nasi Lemak Kukus @ Damansara Jaya

There were rumours that there was a REALLY good Nasi Lemak Ayam Kukus in Damansara Jaya ... so I just had to track it down. Turns out, it is opposite Restoran Busy Corner famous for its Claypoy Chicken Rice

Here's what you get for RM$3.50 ... Deliiiiiicious!

Ps. Thanks to Kheng Han for this tip :-) and directions too!

Kinder Bueno - Waffle

Kinder Bueno is a really nice little hazle-nut/chocolate flavoured waffle snack ... Bravo, that I usually have one handy in the fridge!

Made in ... Warsaw, Poland!? Wow!

YHK Seafood Yong Tau Foo, Damansara Utama

The Yong Tau Foo in YHK, Damansara Utama is really good ... especially the salted fish stuffed to-fu, the silky smooth tofu, and the fried varieties too.

And to accompany the delicious Yong Tau Foo ...
Chee Cheong Fun with Curry,
Chee Cheong Fun with Sweet Sauce, and
Kon Loh Mee with Minced Pork.

Celine Dion - Taking Chances World Tour @ Malaysia (Set 2)

Here are more pictures from Celine Dion's Taking Chances World Tour, at Stadium Merdeka in KL. Photos were taken with a Canon G9, no flash, free-hand (no tripod), 5 rows from the stage, full-manual, on ISO 200, 1/50s to 1/60s and F2.8 to F3.2 in most part.

Celine also belted out Heart's Alone ... Her biggest French (and cross-over) hit, Pour que tu m'aimes encore which she sang at all her concerts. Then she moved to familiar numbers like, Think Twice, and My Love.

I was really surprised and excited when she paid tribute to the legendary Freddy Mercury and Queen, by singing ... a brief interlude of We Will Rock You, followed by The Show Must Go On. Her back-up band then did a medley of Sex Machine / Soul Man / Lady Marmalade / Respect / I Got the Feelin. And she came back to finish off with ... It's a Man's World , That's Just the Woman in Me , and Love Can Move Mountains.

Celine's ensemble included 4 guitarists, a drummer and a percussionist (or was it 2 drummers!?) as well as a pianist and violinist.
And, the backup singers and dancers did a really good job in entertaining us whilst Celine was having a couple of quick breaks, when she (surprisingly) did not change outfits. But hey... I wasn't complaining. Her vocals were AWESOME all night, and she didn't miss a beat, despite having been ill recently.

Her encore of River Deep, Mountain High didn't go down quite very well with the crowd, who had no idea it was a historically very interesting song from 1966. The first recording was by Ike & Tina Turner. The song compared a woman's love to the love that a child feels for a doll, or a puppy feels for his master. Tina Turner promises to "love [her man] just the way I loved that rag doll", and to love her man just like the puppy he had as a child did. Other covers included Harry Nilsson, Deep Purple, with my favourite cover having been done by Erasure (on their brilliant 'Innocents' album) as well as Celine Dion's studio version in her Falling into You album.

After the stage had gone dark, the crowd started chanting, "My Heart Will Go On", "Encore...." ... And, she obliged! Celine Dion returned in a beautiful flowing yellow dress, and did a 2nd encore ... Titanic's theme song, the mega hit, My Heart Will Go On.

At 10:30pm, Celine said good night to Kuala Lumpur ...

The 10,000 strong crowd leaving after an incredible vocal performance by one of the greatest acts of our generation, Celine Dion ... Bravo!

Celine Dion - Taking Chances World Tour @ Malaysia (Set 1)

I was fortunate enough to be at Celine Dion's only South East Asian gig of her Taking Chances World Tour, on Sunday 13th April 2008 :-)

It was an open air performance at the historic Stadium Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur, when the petite 40-year-old Celine Dion performed her 22 songs ... nearly non-stop! I was part of 10,000 fans who were at the Stadium singing along to her every song :-) With the tempo of her performance, and the excellent choreography, it would have been easy not to have realised there were 22 songs in all!

We got the to Stadium Merdeka at about 08:10pm, and was seriously worried that it would rain. The seats were awesome in that they were only 5 rows from the front, with various who's who of Malaysia sat around us, including various developer bosses, celebrities etc. Grrr... the show only kicked off at 08:50pm, but boy was it worth the rate!!

The concert kicked off with ... I Drove All Night. Powerful! This was first written for Roy Orbison (1987), and later covered by Cyndi Lauper (1989), and most recently Celine Dion (2003). This was quickly followed by Power of Love.

Celine Dion then moved into an apologetic statement ... This show was previous planned for 8th April, but due to falling ill in Australia, various postphonements along the legs of her world tour had to be made. “Thank you for being understanding and for giving me another chance to perform here tonight" and her comments about how difficult it must have been for the members of the audience to re-schedule, due to work and family commitments, drew a rowsing applause from the audience.

Various dignataries were present at this gig, notwithstanding the VVIPs sat around our area, but also ... Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin with Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.
Sat a few rows ahead of me? Singer Datuk Siti Nurhaliza and her husband Datuk Khalid Mohd Jiwa! Not far away ... Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, son of Tun Dr M.

She then moved on to various other power ballads in her repertoire ...
Taking Chances , It's All Coming Back to Me Now , Because You Loved Me , and more ...

Celine singing I'm Your Angel (with Barnev Valsaint)

Wikipedia comments ...
Taking Chances Tour is the current concert tour by Canadian pop singer Céline Dion, in support of her latest English album Taking Chances, released in November 2007.
The year-long tour will visit 5 continents, 23 countries and 82 cities. Dion will perform 116 shows.
Record sellouts ... Céline Dion set a record in the history of Canadian concerts, when she sold out all her Montreal shows in only a few minutes. After further shows being added, bringing the total to 8, Montreal's audience became the largest on the tour with 160,000 spectators for a single city. At the end of this tour, Céline will have played the Bell Centre 28 times on tour since 1996. Other Canadian concerts were sold out immediately, prompting another date to be added in Edmonton, Vancouver and Winnipeg.
In the U.S., second dates were announced in New York City, Uniondale, Boston, and Newark.
In the U.K., tickets for Manchester and London were sold out in a few minutes. Two new dates were added on the same day. The 80,000 tickets in Dublin were sold out in 3 hours.
A second concert date was also announced for Sydney, Australia after tickets were selling fast in the country
Postponed concerts ... Céline Dion was forced to postpone all her concerts in Australia due to a throat infection. Her Australian publicists said "Ms Dion is being treated with antibiotics for a minor throat infection and irritated sinuses that she has been suffering from for a number of days since arriving in Australia,". Because of the itinerary changes, the concert scheduled for Malaysia was also changed. The concert in Beijing, China has been cancelled.
Céline celebrated her 40th birthday on March 30th in Sydney, Australia, a day before she resumed her postponed concerts from the week before.

Celine Dion @ Stadium Merdeka

I was so excited when Xn asked me to join her for the Celine Dion gig ... and it wasn't just 'any' ticket, but ones very .. very close to the stage :-) Fabulous! What a view ...

Who's she?

Born to a large, impoverished family in Charlemagne, Quebec, Dion emerged as a teen star in the French-speaking world after her manager and future husband René Angélil mortgaged his home to finance her first record.
In 1990 she released the anglophone album Unison, establishing herself as a viable pop artist in North America and other English-speaking areas of the world.
Dion first gained international recognition in the 1980s after she won the 1982 Yamaha World Popular Song Festival and the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest.
Following a series of French albums in the early 1980s, she signed on to Sony Records in 1986. During the 1990s, with the help of her husband, René Angélil, she achieved worldwide success with several English and French albums, becoming one of the most successful artists in pop music.
However, in 1999, at the height of her success, Dion announced a temporary retirement from entertainment in order to start a family and spend time with her husband, who had been diagnosed with cancer.
She returned to the music scene in 2002 and signed a four-year contract to perform nightly in a five-star theatrical show at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas.
Dion's music has been influenced by genres ranging from pop, soul, and rock to gospel and classical, and while her releases have often received mixed critical reception, she is renowned for her technically skilled and powerful vocals.
In 2004, after amassing in excess of 175 million in album sales, she was presented with the Chopard Diamond Award from the World Music Awards show for becoming the "Best-selling Female Artist in the World".
In April 2007 Sony BMG announced that Celine Dion had sold more than 200 million albums worldwide.

The venue of this Mega Gig!
Stadium Merdeka (Independence Stadium) is a sports stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It was initially erected for Malaysia's declaration of independence on August 31, 1957.
Stadium Merdeka was the site of one of Malaysia's most historically significant events. On 31 August, 1957, power was transferred from the British Empire to the newly independent Malayan government.a Tens of thousands of people crowded into the stadium, which was built specifically for this occasion.

Siti Nurhaliza @ Celine Dion's concert

At the Celine Dion gig in Stadium Merdeka on Sunday, 13th April 2008, I spotted Siti Nurhaliza seating 5 rows in front of me, with Datuk K. Her entrance made quite a stir, and this TV3 reporter was soon speaking with her ...

Who's Siti? Here's Wikipedia to the rescue ...
Dato'/Datin Seri Siti Nurhaliza binti Tarudin (born January 11, 1979) is a multiple-award winning Malaysian pop singer-songwriter. She is currently the most successful Malaysian singer in the industry. Unlike artists who have left Malaysia and reached international stardom, she became an international icon as her career blossomed locally. To date, she has garnered more than 100 local awards as well as international awards.

Siti has previously been romantically linked to quite a number of fellow artistes including Zamani, Anuar Zain and Dr Fazley Yaakob. It was rumoured that Siti and Fazley were together before she met her future husband, Datuk Khalid Muhammad Jiwa (Datuk K), as Fazley helped her get a chance to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London. They flew there together but things apparently became tense when Siti kept on disappearing with Datuk K during rehearsals.

Overseas Imbi - Char Siew revisited

Dinner pre-Celine Dion at Overseas Imbi ... yummy.

Delicious Char Siew as always, with some Roast Pork (Siew Yoke) on the side as well. Just remember to pre-order the Char Siew (About RM$20-25 for a portion), it ALWAYS sells out!

The other must have dish ... Seng Kuah To Fu. Divine!

Sweet and Sour Pork - Beaten by Chow Yangs' (SS2) I reckon.

Yau Mak Fu Yee (Preserved beancurd) ... I didn't like the spicyness of this dish.

Ham Yee Fah Lam Poh (Salted fish, chinese bacon) ... Absolutely delicious!

ps. Thanks to The Map for the treat :-) So kind! RM$177.

Fiat Multipla in Klang

The Fiat Multipla JTD ... spotted in Klang!

Truly a unique car ... seats 3 up front, 3 in the back = 6 seater. With its strange bug-eyes, it certainly draws stares!!

Wikipedia ... The exterior and interior design of the Multipla was quite extraordinary. Nonetheless, the Multipla was displayed at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York during its "Different Roads - Automobiles for the Next Century" exhibition in 1999.
Multipla sales began in Italy late in 1998 but most other markets had to wait a year before receiving imports.
The power of the Fiat badge meant that the Multipla was an instant hit with Italian buyers, but its styling meant that sales elsewhere were less successful. This ultimately led to the car being voted 'Ugliest Car' in the Top Gear awards 1999. Also when Simon Cowell (American Idol 'nice guy'!) went on Top Gear, he was shown a picture of the car and said it had a disease.

BMW E90 325i Sports

Nice car, especially in Sports trim :-)
Fancy registration too ... NY 949. Spotted in KL.

Cold towel @ Tim Sum place - Syntax error!

Here's the review of my first visit to this really good Tim Sum place
Mum's verdict :- Fresh, good food, and great value in a nice chinese restaurant atmosphere.
My verdict :- A winner!

Siew mai (Excellent), Carrot cake (Mum likes it), and Pei Tan Sau Yoke Chuk (Congee/Porridge - Pretty good)

Prawn Chee Cheong Fun, Char Siew Chee Cheong Fun, Fried Wantons with Mayo dressing .. All were pretty good. Dad thought the Ching Pai Kuat (Steamed pork ribs) wasn't seasoned enough, but the pork was of a good quality.

More dumplings and Har Kao too ... Good stuff, fresh, and piping hot. The Ngai Kuah Yeong Tau Foo (Stuffed brinjal) was delicious as well.

I think this restaurant's best dishes are the Lor Mai Kai (Glutinous rice) and the Woo Kok (so good, we had a double helping i.e. 2 x 2).

Great value ... all the above, enough to stuff the 3 of us ... RM$55.

Coco chilling on a Sunday

VW Polo GTi @ VW Experience

VW Polo GTi

This example of a 5 speed manual shifter sure reminds me of a mini-me Golf GTi, had to do a double take when looking at it head-on to tell that it wasn't the same car!

I like the way it looks ... this little pocket rocket :-) 1.8 litres, Turbo-charged, pumping out 150 Bhp, nicccce :-)

What I do like ... the huge boot! Unlike the Golf, I could put a set or FOUR of golf clubs in here!

Price: RM$200,000
Regular price is over RM$230,000 ... But VW Malaysia is clearing their 2007 stock,
with zero miles on the clock. Good value!
Test drive experience:
This was actually my last drive of the VW Experience Day, after the Eos, R32 and GTi. So I really had to 'reset' my mind and expectations as this was a 'proper' family mobile ... but know what? I was impressed! The engine was excellent, pulls smoothly, so smoothly that I didn't realise that it could achieve a sub-8 second 0-100 km/h sprint. The gearbox, whilst it wasn't a DSG unit, was rather smooth, no complaints at all.
I loved the ammenities and all the creature comforts in the car, such as the all-electric seats, with aircon vents IN the seats (which I didn't try!!), the front and rear parking sensors, the BMW E60 5-series-like-keyless-start, blah blah blah ... there were a LOT of toys!
The huge boot was a major PLUS point as well, pity it didn't come with GPS (Sat Nav) as standard.

VW Golf GTi - Test Drive

VW Golf GTi

Capacity: 2 litres
Max Output: 200 BHp @ 5,100 RPM

Lights: Auto levelling bi-xenon headlights

Acceleration (0-100 Km/h): 6.9 seconds

Safety: ESP, ABS, Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), Traction Control (TCS)

Juliansi.blogspot.com's Test Drive experience
This was my first drive in the legendary VW Golf GTi @ the VW Experience in Bukit Kiara Equestrian Club. I had previously driven the Mk III and Mk IV in the UK, but in more humble guises, eg. 1.4 and 1.6. It was worth the wait ... bloody exciting!!
Getting comfortable is quite easy in VW Malaysia's Golf GTi, which comes very well equipped, settling in into the semi-bucket seats, with electric adjustments.
The Golf GTi manages to be many things ... Beautiful yet non-ostentatious (Reminds me a little of the people's car, also a VW, the Beetle!), sexy yet discrete, powerful yet comfortable, firm yet corners nicely ... Fabulous!
I have to say, I do like the GTi more then the R32, especially as a day-to-day car, hmm ... but that Turbo does kick in rather strongly, one has to be light on the throttle.
Excellent test drive, I want one!!

VW Golf R32 - Test Drive

VW Golf R32

Engine: 6 cylinder petrol (Normally aspirated)
Capacity: 3.2 litres
Max Output: 250 BHp @ 6,300 RPM

Gearbox: 6 Speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG)
Top Speed: 248 Km/h
Acceleration from 0-100 Km/h: 6.2 seconds

Seats: Original Recaro bucket seats, manual adjustments
What we thought! Whilst the seats offer incredible support, and look super sweet, I am not sure if it was suitable for day to day use especially when one's posterior is a wee bit bigger then normal!

Drive: 4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive
Tyres: Omanyt alloy wheels, 7 1/2 J x 18" Tyres/Rims
Safety: ABS, ESP, EDL, Traction Control (TCS)

Here's a view of the rear! So sweet ... these twin tail pipes, produce a glorious exhaust note. Like a mini Formula One car :-)

Best of all, I had a chance to test drive this baby-beast!
Fatimah of VW PJ (Federal Highway, Tel: +603 7954 3467) informed me that this was the first time VW Malaysia allowed a test drive of this elusive car (In fact, this was the first example I had seen in the country, after seeing one in Singapore, many months ago.) ... I felt privileged!
In fact, this was the 2nd car I test drove at the VW Experience, after the EOS, so it couldn't have been more different. From a refined and slightly-feminine EOS to a hard-core and rowdy R32, I thought!
Whilst the exhaust note was so sweeeeeeeet, I did wonder if one would get bored with it using the R32 as a daily drive. Also, those Recaro bucket seats, hmm... just too tight!
What was impressive though was the seamless DSG gearbox, the relative refinement (Yes!), and the built quality (Typical of VW-Audi).
However, I didn't find the 4-Motion particularly effective compared to the GTi's standard front-wheel drive. Maybe it was cos' i hardly pushed the limits of this baby-uber-mobile!
All in all ... I'd choose the GTi especially for the savings of RM$100k and that front nose ... but ooooh, I loved the soundtrack of the R32.

A parting shot of the "VW Halo Car" as I dubbed it ...

VW Eos 2.0 Turbo FSi - Launch in Malaysia

VW Malaysia launched the Eos at the beautiful location of the Bukit Kiara Equestrian Club in Kuala Lumpur on 11-12th April 2008.

VW Eos
Power: 147 kW (200 Bhp)
Engine: 4 cylinder petrol, Turbo FSi
Wheels: Le Mans alloy wheels, 7 1/2 J x 17" rims/tyres

Interior: Climatronic air conditioning system, with 2 zone temperature control
ICE: Radio RCD 500 with MP3 replace function, 6 disc CD changer, and 8 loudspeakers
Steering: 3 spoke leather covered, with multi-function control (Operates the multi-function display).

Gearbox: 6 speed Drect Shift Gearbox (DSG)

Roof: CSC (Cabriolet - Sunroof - Coupe) roof system
What is it? Fully automatic roof system in glass optic with sliding and tilting glass roof, and net fabric wind deflector in front of the window frame.
What do I think? I think the Eos does look rather good with the top down!
Safety: ABS, Active Roll over protection system (if the car goes turtle!), Electronic differential lock (EDL).

Price: Just shy of RM$250,000

Test drive experience: I was lucky enough to be one of the first people to try out the Eos on the Saturday event, and it was an interesting drive. My first experience in a Convertible in this hot climate of ours, and thank goodness the air-con did its job well (In fact, when you activate the roof to 'close', the air-con naturally turns up to accommodate this. Clever!).
Little evidence of scuttle shake, and whilst the ride was firm on those 17" rims, it was never uncomfortable. Hmmm, if the 2.0 Turbo FSi engine was so good in this little convertible, I eagerly awaited my chance to drive the Golf GTi!
What impressed me the most, besides the CSC (Cabriolet-Sunroof-Coupe) experience, which was so easily operated through a little lever on the rear-centre console, was the DSG gearbox ... truly smooth and seamless!

VW Malaysia experience: Miss Fatimah (PJ VW Centre, Federal Highway, near Naza @ Tel: +603 7954 3467) was an excellent host, and was courteous, obliging and friendly. Never trying the hard sale, and she simply enjoyed the experience of test driving various cars (The GTi, R32 and Passat experiences to follow in this Blog) with me that Saturday morning.
