Kang Guan Seafood, Pulau Carey off Banting, Klang

We were invited by Diver San to join a makan at Kang Guan, Pulau Carey, off Banting in Klang, over the weekend ... Thought I was gonna be the FIRST BLOGGER to make it there, but I was beaten by two .. or four .. or five others (Last I checked on Google! Haha...).

Its located at the bank of the Ulu Langat river, which flows into the Straits of Malacca.
To get there ... Just head on the KESAS towards Klang, and make a left at the exit towards Banting (Its signboarded right-Klang, left-Banting) . One needs to head towards Banting and after Teluk Panglima Garang there is a signboard that shows a way to Pulau Carey. Take a right at the next main intersection.

Bamboo shell - Slurrrp! Worth the trip here for this very interesting dish.
UPDATE! 18th Nov '08 - Ask for "Chuk Tan"

Or Chien / 'Ho Chien' - A popular Klang hokkien dish, aka Oyster Omellette. Love the little oysters that they use, not too oily (it usually is in other places), and full of flavour.

Wu Tau Poh ... Uh, Yam Basket? The masterpiece here I reckon, so gooooooood! The yam was delicious, as was the filling.

Stir fried veges with garlic ... spinach or tapioca, I wasn't sure. But darn good too. Full of 'fire', great chef!

Chiu Yim Har (Salt Pepper Prawn) - Excellent once again. Very fresh!

Soft Shell Crab - Pretty good too!

UPDATE! 18th Nov '08 - Ask for "Har Koh" or Lai Liu Har (Mantis shrimp ... delicious too!)

San, thanks for the treat :-) What a great meal. Good value too at just over RM$80 for all the above fresh seafood!

ps - What's Pulau Carey? Check out Wikipedia ... Carey Island or Pulau Carey is an island in Selangor, Malaysia. Carey Island is located to the south of Port Klang and north of Banting town. It is a huge island separated from the Selangor coast by the Klang River, connected by a bridge from Chondoi and Teluk Panglima Garang near Banting.

It was named after Valentine Carey, a former British civil service officer in Malaya. Despite its name, many locals from Klang do not consider it a real island compared to Pulau Ketam due to its proximity to the mainland and the river that separates it from the mainland is practically a stream.

It is famous for its seafood such as crabs, prawns, and various fishes. The island has palm oil plantations owned by Golden Hope Plantations. It is an initial settlement area for the Mah-Meri , one of the aborigine Orang Asli tribes of Malaysia. They have assimilated into modern life, with jobs in the nearby plantations and farms, but they retain their unique culture and way of life. Apart from exhibitions of their traditional dances and music, the Mah Meri are particularly known for their votive sculptures, fashioned from a kind of swamp hardwood known as "Nyireh Batu".

Hi Julian,

Upon reading your blog, my family and I took your advise and travelled the off beaten road for this famous restaurant.

All I can say is... Best in the world !!! Thank you so much for the recommendation. How to call in chinese the softshell crab & crayfish? my family and I wanna try the next round we go there and see which is better.

We hopped into the island but there really is nothing, and its almost like Sime Darby OWNS the whole island. How about the cultural centres? when we went there on Friday (14/11) everything looks closed and a little sad. Did we take the wrong road? 'cause the village itself was kinda quiet for a weekend.

Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks so much again!

Aaron
