Ipoh Old Town, Bangsar

28th April 2007
I actually found the original in Ipoh better ... Ipoh Old Town by the Ipoh Padang , but still it was really convenient to get to enjoy Ipoh makan without having to track 2 hours up the highway! The usual fare ... Kai See Hor Fun (Shredded chicken hor fun in Soup) as well as Pork Balls in Soup. The White coffee was just average.

Bak Kut Teh at Telok Pulai, Klang

Breakfast ... 28th April 2007
Telok Pulai Bak Kut Teh at Taman Rashna, Klang (Near to Menara ING) leaves little to be described ... Today's Sai Kuat mixed with Pai Kuat was really good, so much so that we ordered 2 pots! Stir fry Yau Mak and Yau Cha Kuay on the side, divine.

Prime, Le Meridien KL

27th April 2007
Birthday celebration at Le Meridien's Prime.

For starters, I had Lobster Bisque which was simply divine, with a gorgeous puff pastry over the top. The Caesars Salad was rather dissapointing, especially at 40 bucks! Just too much 'creaminess'.

As described in the Malay Mail ... "Those who love their meat will be overjoyed to learn that Prime, Le Meridien’s latest steak house and one of Kuala Lumpur’s top tables, serves the prized 200-day grain-fed Australian Black Angus and Grass Fed Argentina Cabana Las Lilas."

I had the latter prepared 'Medium', but it was not as tender as I thought it should be. It certainly was juicy, and had a good meaty flavour, but the Wagyu I previously had at Sheraton Imperial was actually better. Guess I have to try the Black Angus 200d next time! The Grilled Cod was excellent though!

The starters

Time for mains!

Sweet! Always the best bit ...

ps - A map, in case you really need to know how to get to this landmark (KL Hilton - Le Meridien twin towers)

Nasi Lemak in Jalan Telawi, Bangsar

Late night supper ... 26th April 2007

Johnny's Steamboat, Jusco Bandar Baru Klang

24th April 2007
Johnny's Steamboat is located at ...
Jusco Bandar Baru Klang
Persiaran Bukit Raja 2 Bandar Baru Klang
41150 Klang, Selangor
Phone : +603 3343 9366
Convenient location inside the Jusco mall, at Bandar Baru Klang ... and soup was actually rather tasty, without being overly 'oily'. A simple Steamboat ... and the side dishes were reasonable as well, Kai-Lan in Oyster Sauce and BBQ Beef. I did enjoy the Thai Tea. Damage? Approx. RM$50.

Nilai Springs Golf ... Near Seremban

Sunday, 22nd April 2007
The round at Nilai Springs, located off the Seremban Highway just outside of Sepang / KLIA was followed by lunch and drinks at the cafe facing the 18th green ... Oriental chicken chop was not bad, the guys enjoyed the Chicken Rice and Mee Mamak too.

Breakies ... Pan Bakery, Subang

Kafe Pan Bakery, SS 15 in Subang
Yummy breakies in a rather interesting 'not-so-mamak-like' venue ... Good 'western style' with very tasty croissant, and really good Nasi Lemak with Curry Chicken too. WELL RECOMMENDED breakfast joint!

Manhattan Fish Market, Subang Parade

18th April
Manhattan Fish Market, Subang Parade
Tel : +603 5637 0121
Surprisingly good, fresh seafood! Clam Chowder was rather poor ... but I did enjoy the Seafood Platter of excellent grilled fish (Dory?), reasonable prawns and calimari, and nice bed of salad.

Jarrod and Rawlins (J&R), Sri Hartamas

17th April
JARROD & RAWLINS ... 36, Jalan 27/70A, Desa Sri Hartmas, KL
TEL: +603 2300 0708
Garden salad, Lamb sausages, Pork sausages, Steak, Lamb Chop, Mushroom with bacon bits ... all very yummy, and cooked for you (Cooking charges = RM$10 per head) after you pick your meat from the deli counter. Quite delightful!

Excerpt from http://www.theedgedaily.com/ ...

(1) The brainchild of made-in-Malaysia partners Jarrod Chek and Denis Rawlins, Jarrod & Rawlins has only been in existence for slightly more than a year. Since it opened its doors in Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur, however, it has left an indelible impact on the area’s food and beverage scene. “Purveyors of fine food and wine” is how Chek and Rawlins have chosen to describe their outfit.
(2) They make an incongruous pair, the slightly fresh-faced, apple-cheeked Chek and the youthful, pan-Asian-looking Rawlins with his athlete’s physique, honed from years of sailing and playing rugby.
(3) Chek was one of the founders of Milawa (M) Sdn Bhd, a company synonymous with the import and supply of wines in the country, and has eight years of experience in the business. Rawlins is the owner of a factory producing sausages and such in Shah Alam; he supplies his products direct to small supermarkets and through concessionaires to bigger ones. His products can be found in the non-halal freezer sections of many of the leading local supermarkets.
(4) So, how did the idea for Jarrod & Rawlins get started in the first place? “We had mutual friends and had bumped into each other quite a bit now and then. I’d left Milawa in 2004 and had nothing to do for three months. I’d heard people pestering Denis to open a sausage bar many times. One day I got to thinking about it and called Denis. Suggested maybe we could buka something together,” Chek replies. “I thought it was just the beer talking. Then I had lunch with him and I knew he was serious. Within a few weeks we signed on for the premises and got it going. The concept sort of grew and we were very hands-on about it, did our own ID and all,” his partner continues.

Restoran New Sea View, Old Klang Road

This hawker centre is located adjacent to Citrus Park along Old Klang Road ... Forgettable Kon Loh mee, so-so Pork Balls, indifferent Loh-Bak, and OK Chee Cheong Fun!

Spider Maki ... OK, but the soft-shell crab texture wasn't up to par. $18
Stamina Maki ... Unagi on sushi, really good. $28
Saikro Stk Yasai ... Fried Oysters, crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside ... excellent. $30
Kaki Fry ... Nice beef dish with really good stir fried veges accompanying. $25
DN Chasoba ... So damn good, yummy cold green soba. $18
I liked that they did not charge for the japanese green tea, served piping hot and always refilled, as well!

Curry Mee at Pudu ... Simply divine!

Breakies, 15th April 2007
Located along Jalan Brunei Selatan, off Jalan Pudu, Kuala Lumpur
My second trip (First was a month ago ... Check out my review then) to what is very possibly the best Curry Mee money can buy! Truly PORKELICIOUS (to coin a phrase from El Cerdo) ... Char-siew, Pork-balls, Minced Pork along with Shredded chicken, Tau Foo Pok, Cockles (See-ham), Bean-sprouts, perfectly el-dente noodles, and the most balanced fiery-yet-tasty curry soup, SLURRRP! About 5 bucks a bowl.
This time round I had the loh-see-fun variety which was EVEN BETTER, and I asked Aunty to let me shoot her whilst she was preparing the magic. Here you go...

PS. Directions there via photos below, travel along Jalan Pudu and look out for Caltex, turn right! And a photo of the famous Pudu Jail as I was travelling home.

El Cerdo ... The Pig, Kuala Lumpur

Saturday, 14th April 2007
Address: El Cerdo, 52 Tingkat Tong Shin, 50200 Kuala Lumpur
Tel: +603 2145 0511
What was good? Tuna ham (Really!), desserts (Chocolate terrine, pancakes and best of all the Yin-Yang), Roasted potatoes and Sauerkraut-Mashed potatoes which accompanied the Pork Knuckle, Pork Shoulder steak and fantastic service by all the staff, especially Werner and Andreas.
What was OK ... The starter Sausages, Carbonara pasta, and the Paella.
What wasn't? Skin of pork knuckle was rather hard, and ate too much!
Would you believe it? Sat down at 07:30pm, and left at 12:15am!

Interesting quotes on the night,
"You have to love a woman who knows exactly what she wants",
"You get to try three things at once!",
"Yammmmmm senggggg", AND
"Happy Birthday to you.." is still ringing in my head, with the PA system playing this tune FOUR TIMES over our 4 hour dinner!

Ps. Pat & J aka Chocoholic thanks for organising :-)

Koon Kee Kon Loh Mee (Wantan Mee), Petaling Street

Really good kon loh mee at Petaling Street ... Chinatown is just a mecca of makan and 'not so original' goods !!! The sauce here is rather special ... "Not so black, aka not so much 'hak see yau'!" The noodles are really good too, of the 'sticky variety'.
Hung Kee of Jalan Loke Yew still takes some beating, but that is of a different variety ... Hung Kee is more 'sophisticated', whilst this place is good and simple. Reminds me a little of the place I used to go, growing up in Klang, near the Klang Railway Station, but that is now a bygone era... Damnit, I am such a Kon Loh Mee Foodie!
Lianne, you see, I ain't so atas after all :-)

Check out the cool Automated parking lot at the adjacent Malaya Hotel, damn scary man! Beware of the attendant though, "RESPECT MA AUTHORITY!"

Petaling Street ... a mecca of food

Air mata kuching, Fried sweet potato, various kueys and Ma-lay Koh in Petaling Street ... Exquisite!

Sze Ngan Chai Roast Duck , Petaling Street

Another institution along Jalan Petaling / Chinatown ... Good enough to bring tears to one's eyes! Sze Ngan Chai (Four Eyes in Cantonese) serves simply incredible duck ... some magic for $18 (half a duck), just falls off the bone ... tasty, juicy, simply YUMMY!

Ps. An interesting article I found ...
The popular Sze Ngan Chye salted roasted duck trader, who is part and parcel of Chinatown after hav-ing, traded here for over 50 years has temporarily relocated to opposite The Coffee Bean outlet outside Kim Lian Kee coffees hop and Georgetown Pharmacy."None of our regular customers know where we are although some hawkers help by directing those who enquire," said Sze."It's the first time I've moved away from my spot in 50 years. If it weren't for the coffee-shop owners who allowed us to trade here, we woltld have been forced to close for two months," he said. "The Government is spending so much money to upgrade toe place and am sure it would lure more visitors. However, the important thing is for us to get back our original trading spots," he said.
His daughter Amy Choong added that they were also unsure if the new stalls would be standard-ised.
"We need to display our roasted ducks in glass cabinets to make it easy for customers to make their choice. Will our needs be looked into if all the stalls are supposed to look the same? We can only get information from the newspapers but no one really knows what is happening," she said.

Lai Foong Beef Noodle ... 300th Blog!

This institution was established 1956 ... My blog was established 2006 ...
Welcome to my 300th Blog entry!
Really good soup, succulent and tender pieces of beef, but I found the kuay-teow a little 'rough' (Not ala Ipoh) ... Next time I will try another noodle. Not cheap at 6 bucks, but hey ... this is an institution!
Located at Jalan Cheng Lock, on the crossroads with Jalan Petaling across from the Jukebox shoe shop (Next door to Hong Leong Finance). Have heard people describe that the shop selling beef noodles opposite Lai Foong 'deserves' the title of specialist , I will see when my stomach can take in more food!
Try the good coffee at this Coffeeshop as well, the old man who makes it is just cool!

Kin Kin Pan Mee, Jalan Tunku Abd Rahman, KL

Saturday breakies ... 14th April 2007
Restoran Kin Kin ... 40 Ground Floor, Jalan Dewan Sultan Sulaiman 1, Off Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Chow Kit, KL.
Many bloggers concur that this is the best Pan Mee ever ... Well, I disagree!
Service is average to poor, drinks (Barley and coffee) tasteless, pan mee sans chilli flakes/chilli oil ... indifferent! And, when one loads up on the chilli aka magic stuff, it merely becomes OK! I personally prefer...
Big Bowl Pan Mee at Cheras
Swee Hing Pan Mee at OUG

Bak Kut Teh, Port Klang

Friday the 13th ... Lunch time
Klang Tasusia Bak Kut Teh
Jalan Tengku Badar, 42000 Port Klang, Selangor
Tel: +6019 276 0363

This regular 'work' lunch-place has certainly grown up! Check out the environment now, as well as the hot water dispenser ... at least the 'spiritual' tree that lends its name to this restaurant is still there! Of course it is!! Excellent service, keen prices, and rather good BKT ... yummy!

How many times have I blogged this magical concoction aka Bak Kut Teh? Click and find out!

Priceless memory...

Congratulations Liet & Siow Hooi!
A priceless memory captured on 25th March at Ciao ... Cheers!

Happy Birthday Whye Mun ... Marmalade, Mont Kiara

Thursday 12th April

Belated birthday meal with Mun at Marmalade in Mont Kiara, followed by a drink at Somo nearby ... Great choice, Mun ... Yummy food at Marmalade! How do I describe the LASAGNE? "Mmmh oily, but mmmh dry" aka PERFECTO! The salad was really good too, as was the yummy Beef stew! BRAVO!
Add: Marmalade Cafe , LG-1A, Shoplex at Mont Kiara , 2 Jalan Kiara , Mont Kiara , Kuala Lumpur
Tel: +603 - 6201 1743

We then went to Somo which was just next to Marmalade, and they had such a rude name on the menu ... CHU HAI COCKTAIL!!? or perhaps it was my imagination!

Santai ... Malay food at Taman Tun

A quick dinner at this consistently excellent Malay restaurant, Santai at Taman Tun Dr Ismail ... truly good! Telur Bungkus - SANGAT SEDAP! Tom Yam (Mixed) - EQUALLY SEDAP! Nasi Goreng USA - BAGUS LAH! Fried Meehoon - OK LAH.

Tuesday, April 10, 2007

One pineapple

Following a 2 year hiatus ... Yanna finally cultivated our family's FIRST (and only!) Pineapple, from a Thai-stock! It was incredibly juicy, tasty and rather sweet too. Priceless!

Tanjung Mamak, SS14

A pretty well known mamak in SS14, Subang ... Rainy evening, 10th April 2007

The verdict? Large mamak, rain tends to seem through the canopy roof section, but it was raining cats and dogs this evening! Mee goreng, slightly soggy, but good, due mainly to the excellent Fried Chicken, Roti Canai was average only (Fish curry wasn't sour enough, just no kick!), Char Kuay Teow Penang style was VERY GOOD considering there was NO pork lard (strictly halal!), and the drinks were oK (Orange and apple juices, fresh, at RM$4) and not OK (Milo kosong, not thick enough)!

As mentioned from the USJ Forum, "Mamak Bistro (Restaurant Tanjung) ... Popular among residents in Subang Jaya and USJ. Its sole proprietor is Seeni Mohamed Ali. The restaurant is located in SS14/1E in Subang Jaya."

Teo Chew Porridge @ Eat-Zy, USJ Subang

9th April 2007
Eat-Zy Teo Chew Porddige & Rice
48 Jalan SS14/2, Subang Jaya, Selangor.

Plain porridge (Could have been a lot smoother), Yam rice (good!), Minced pork (OK), Pork with potatoes (I miss my granny's!), Beans (OK, but cold), Cha choy pork (Also miss my granny's!), Loh-tofu with egg (OK).
My verdict? Reasonably yummy porridge and excellent condiments in this place at USJ ... Good stuff but more so because I like the layout of the shop!

New Decanter, Damansara Heights

Sunday, 8th April 2007
A selection of cheesecakes, banana pancakes, chocolate cake, et al ... Yum! Just a great chill out place :-)
As one of the gang commented, "Mmmmmmmmmh..." (Referring to the warm banana pancakes with 'half sauce')

Leong Ah Restaurant, Puchong

Restoran Leong Ah, 95 Jalan Kenari 23, Bandar Puchong Jaya, 47100 Puchong, Selangor. Telephone : +603 8075 5579 or +6012 657 9140
Another tai-chow (Big Fry!) experience ... Good, but certainly NOT excellent.
What we had ... Chee pau kai (Paper wrapped chicken) - GOOD, Fried beans - GOOD, Two flavour pork - SO SO! , Kung Pao Prawns - OK, Claypot Taufoo - OK, Yam Basket - OK ONLY! , Foo Yong Egg Omellette - SO SO!
Makan buddies comments, "So so lah..." and "I prefer the original shop".

Pan Mee ... Big Bowl Noodles House, Cheras

8th April 2007
Big Bowl Noodle House,
G-13&14, Jalan Desa Aman 1, Pusat Penjaja Desa Aman, Taman Desa Aman, Cheras, 56100 Kuala Lumpur.
Telephone: +6012 667 7099

Sunday lunch at Cheras' FINEST Pan Mee! Excellent taste and texture, and great accompanying curry sauce as well as fried wantons. The purveyor's name is Eric, and he's really friendly too. This is certainly a MUST EAT :-)

Hoong Wan Yong Tau Foo, Old Klang Road

Sunday breakies, 8th April 2007
This place was once excellent for Yong Tau Foo (YTF), it seems roughly 6 years ago when it was known as 'Margaret's YTF' ... but alas, the standards have fallen short of 'good' :-(
The BRINJAL with garlic bits was still excellent, but everything else including the Hakka Pork was sub-par. Not really worth the drive to Jalan Kuchai Lama for this, off Old Klang Road!

Ps. Check out this 'Magic Potion' , all for the princely sum of ... RM$2.80 !

Saturday, April 07, 2007

Happy Birthday, Ester!

Saturday dinner, 7th April 2007
Celebrating Ester's birthday at home in Shah Alam ..

Rojak in Sri Hartamas

Saturday lunch ... 7th April 2007
Located opposite one of my fave English pubs, Bulldog (at the end of Jalan Sri Hartamas 8), adjacent to the Petronas service station.
Finally a rojak stall that gives my other favourites at Subang and O&S a run for their money!
This rojak is very good, and the sauce is of the slightly spicier variety, washed down well with the Cendol. Bravo!

Tim Sum at Goldview Hakka Food, PJ

Breakfast on 7th Apri 2007
Location location? Sea Park, Petaling Jaya (opposite Giant Supermarket and the Post Office), Petaling Jaya
Duh? On the row behind the legendary O&S (which is the corner shop house facing Caltex petrol station, along Jalan 20/14 at Paramount Gardens, Petaling Jaya)
Price-point? Decent value for fresh tim-sum which ranges from good to very good, at RM$65 which was enough to STUFF the four of us.

Nasi Lemak & Satay in Klang

Good Friday ... 6th April 2007
A simple dinner from Klang town, located opposite Song River ... The nasi lemak was OK (Good sambal, poor chicken, damn hot sotong) and the Satay indifferent ... the Ketupat was darn strange though, 'modern' type with plastic wrapping instead of leaf!

Trendy Station, Bukit Tinggi in Klang

Thursday 5th April 2007
A simple dinner of fried rice and wanton soup ... The latter was nothing to shout about, but I do love this 4 ringgit fried rice (Char-siew and siew-yoke bits, mmmmh), but do remember to ask the 'Chef' to cut down on the chee-yau cha (aka Lard!).

Nero Teca, Kuala Lumpur

4th April 2007

Nero Teca is located at Somerset Residences, in Lorong Ceylon ... Kuala Lumpur
Celebrated a friend's birthday at this Italian place. For starters I had the excellent Parma Ham with Melon. And for mains'... Most of the gang had pasta's which were generally good (The salad was good too) ... but I decided to have the 'Enough for Three!' special instead, Roast Suckling Pig ala Italian. It was FAT! I liked to accompanying medi-vegs, but the pig ... well, it was dissapointing. I do like the way the place is laid out, but becareful what one orders!
Ps. Can't wait for El Cerdo :-)

Kon Loh Mee, Berkeley Gardens (Klang)

Pretty decent kon loh mee, found in Berkeley Gardens (Klang) ...

Ngau Kee ... Beef Noodles in KL

The famous Ngau Kee, a legendary hawker located on Tingkat Tong Shin in the heart of KL!
Founded way back in 1972 , and the 'loh shee fun' is the most recommended noodle . Seems it goes perfectly with beef :-) and the stock!
Didn't have the pleasure of Mr Ngau or Ngau Soh (Mrs Ngau!!) cooking for me, but it was still really good. I do miss the pleasure of Ipoh's exquisite 'Tung Chai' (Small chairs) from back in the 1980s ... Alas, gone are those days.

Max Kitchen and Wines, Kuala Lumpur

Max Kitchen and Wines ... Tingkat Tong Shin, in the heart of KL
Recommended by a Blogger friend of mine, good value set lunch at 22 bucks. I thought the food was 'OK', but the dessert was excellent. Nice ambience, and certainly worth a visit ... at lunch time that is!

Song River, Klang

Sunday dinner, 1st April 2007

Read about this restaurant in The Star, and it surely did not dissapoint ... Good fish (Steamed Patin is very boney though, so becareful!), fresh prawns in vietnamese sauce (Sort of like a spicey buttery sauce), and simple but good To-fu steamed with fried choi-poh on the top. Yummy! And good value at 50 bucks too :-)

Excerpt from The Star ... "WHILE a family-operated restaurant is a common concept, not many can claim to have worked together for two decades or extended beyond its original restaurant.
Ng Pow Men and his wife Loh Kim Yok, both 43, opened their first restaurant called Restoran Soon Chui in Klang 12 years ago, followed by their second restaurant named Restoran Song River in the same town seven years later.
“Both our restaurants serve Chinese and Thai style food but each has its own speciality,” said Loh, who takes care of the restaurants’ customers while Ng handles the food and menu.
Her brother Loh Wai Kheng, 39, is Restoran Soon Chui’s chef while her brother-in-law Yau Wai Chang, 37, heads the kitchen of Restoran Song River.
“The four of us have been working together for 20 years in the Chinese restaurant business. We previously worked under a different boss to gain some experience, before opening our own restaurant in 1995.
“My husband and I also worked in Germany for about three years, where he worked as the head chef of a Chinese restaurant there,” said Loh. "

Chicken Rice @ Nam Heong

April Fool's Day ... 1st April 2007
Nam Heong is located at No. 45 Jalan Usj 9/5S , 47620 Subang Jaya.
I enjoyed the chicken rice at this 'old place under new management'!
Some Nam Heong history from chowtimes.com .... They had been a fixture in KL's Chinatown for over 60 years -- since 1938. They are known for their Hainanese Chicken Rice. To me they had the best Hainanese Chicken Rice in the world, no kidding! .... It was later that I learnt that privately owned Nam Heong restaurant had been sold to the Esquire Kitchen group for RM 5 million. Esquire Kitchen used that Nam Heong brand and opened up more restaurants across the city.

Nasi lemak ... Naili's Place, Sentul

31st March 2007

Nailis Place has gotta be one of the most interesting restaurants in town! Jungle setting, serving Malay hawker fare aka MAMAK! Food is good, but best of all is the deco of the place :-) Unique!

Little Bali at Bukit Tinggi, Klang

Another visit to Bukit Tinggi in Klang ... 27th March 2007
Food is oK, prices are rather steep for Klang, but I like the ambience of this place

Leos, Bukit Tinggi in Klang

26th March 2007
A little cafe not too far from my casa ...
Reasonable, and actually rather trendy!
