(1) The brainchild of made-in-Malaysia partners Jarrod Chek and Denis Rawlins, Jarrod & Rawlins has only been in existence for slightly more than a year. Since it opened its doors in Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur, however, it has left an indelible impact on the area’s food and beverage scene. “Purveyors of fine food and wine” is how Chek and Rawlins have chosen to describe their outfit.
(2) They make an incongruous pair, the slightly fresh-faced, apple-cheeked Chek and the youthful, pan-Asian-looking Rawlins with his athlete’s physique, honed from years of sailing and playing rugby.
(3) Chek was one of the founders of Milawa (M) Sdn Bhd, a company synonymous with the import and supply of wines in the country, and has eight years of experience in the business. Rawlins is the owner of a factory producing sausages and such in Shah Alam; he supplies his products direct to small supermarkets and through concessionaires to bigger ones. His products can be found in the non-halal freezer sections of many of the leading local supermarkets.
(4) So, how did the idea for Jarrod & Rawlins get started in the first place? “We had mutual friends and had bumped into each other quite a bit now and then. I’d left Milawa in 2004 and had nothing to do for three months. I’d heard people pestering Denis to open a sausage bar many times. One day I got to thinking about it and called Denis. Suggested maybe we could buka something together,” Chek replies. “I thought it was just the beer talking. Then I had lunch with him and I knew he was serious. Within a few weeks we signed on for the premises and got it going. The concept sort of grew and we were very hands-on about it, did our own ID and all,” his partner continues.
