Wong Ah Wah ... Chicken wings at Jalan Alor ... again!

(After Black & Bling) Hmm, this gives me a sense of DEJA VU!
Click ... Duh, wasn't I just there last nite!
Yup, ordered the same excellent dishes (Chicken wings, Lam Yee pork ribs and excellent Siew Yoke Noodles) ... as well as Kam Hiong La La which was good too.

Black and Bling ... a Malaysian Today event @ Maison, Heritage Row

Malaysian Today created a 'prom nite to top all prom nites' at Maison, off Heritage Row, on Friday 30th November 2007 ... and it was a ball!

The Cutie Curls team were one of the co-sponsors ...

It was prom nite... with all the leading colleges represented. Interesting door gift ... duh, underwear!?

Time to party with a dear friend ...

More party shots ...

Beautiful nails courtesy of Cutie Curls ... and blings too!

The DJ spun tunes from Timbaland, JT, PCD, etc etc ... rocking!

Before the event started, in fact at Mizu over dinner ... I had expressed that I wanted to win a HOLIDAY and nothing else ... Guess what ... I did! Krabi here I come!

Happy Birthday Jess!

Celebration at Mizu in TTDI Plaza :-)

ps. Cupcakes were from Marmalade ... of course!

Mizu - Japanese Fine Dining, TTDI

Mizu Japanese Fine Dining - This was a celebration dinner:
i) We had 2 birthdays
ii) We were about to go for Black and Bling!
iii) It was a Friday nite ... TGiF!

Add: C-2-1, TTDI Plaza, Jalan Wan Kadir 3, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, KL.
Tel: +603 7728 6498 (I stand corrected, sorry for the mistake before - Jules, 1st Jan '08)
This is a newly opened establishment, all of 3 months young now.
They have a BV branch as well ... F6, First Floor, Bangsar Village1, Jalan Telawi Satu, Bangsar Baru.

Interesting starter ... was it eggplant/brinjal? Perhaps!
Great sushi, I reckon the soft-shell crab and the salmon skin ones were some of the best I had EVER tasted! Endee had the interesting sea-urchin aka 'uni'.
Items we had ... Mizu Maki ($35), Soft Shell Crab Maki ($25), Salmon Skin Maki ($20), and ... Uni Sushi ($20 each x 2 = $40).

" Uni (oo-nee) is the Japanese name for the edible part of the Sea Urchin. While colloquially referred to as the roe (eggs), uni is actually the animal's gonads (which produce the milt and roe, sea urchins being hermaphrodites). Uni ranges in color from rich gold to light yellow, and has a creamy consistency that some love and is off-putting to others. It is nevertheless one sushi item that is in incredible demand around the world, which is reflected in its price. Sea Urchins are a rare treat for those who acquire a taste. Uni has a light, sweet, and somewhat fecund flavor. "

Other more 'standard' items we tried included 3 'mugs' (yes, they serve it in mugs) chawanmushi, mixed tempura and unagi-temaki.
Items we had ... Chawan Mushi ($10 x 3 = $30), Tempura Moriawase ($36). And, Umaki Tamago ($30).

Voila! Time for the mains ...
Piece de resistance ... the Foie Grais Fried Rice which I had ... incredible!
The gals chose the seafood fried rice and garlic fried rice, which were really tasty and full of 'fire' (powerful wok!) as well. Endee's Cha Soba was goooooood!
Items we had ... Seafood Fried Rice ($15 x 2 = $30), Garlic Fried Rice ($10), Foie Gras Fried Rice ($32). The Cha Soba was $22.

Other mains ... Chicken in teriyaki sauce, Beef and Salmon as well. All were excellent!
Items we had ... Beef Teriyaki ($48), Tori Teriyaki ($25), Grilled Salmon ($25).

Slurp! Couldn't leave without desserts ... Black sesame ice cream and Ocha (Green tea) ice cream. Hmm, interesting, they didn't charge us for the green tea, that's a nice touch!
Items we had ... Macha Ice Cream ($8), and Kurogoma Ice Cream ($8).

The meal for the 7 of us came up to just under 490 ringgit, good value considering it was a private room, great service and excellent food. Best japanese in town so far? Quite possibly!

Bluffy ... Welcome!

Here are some pix of a dear friend's children ... Bluffy and Tiffany :-)

Bluffy's a baby cocker-spaniel :-)

And Fatt Choy aka Tiffany is king of the house ... for now!

BMW UK-registration ... along the NKVE

Always nostalgic to see a UK registration on Malaysian soil...
This one happened to be a 2003-registered BMW 730Li from Vines of Guilford, UK on the NKVE!

Naughtiest car registration ... ever?

This car hails from Taman Tun Dr Ismail ... last time I saw it there, the owner was about, so I didn't wanna capture the moment, but I didn't falter this time at KLCC's car park :-)

Wong Ah Wah Chicken Wings and Siew Yoke Noodles ... Jalan Alor, KL

Supper at Jalan Alor following the James Morrison gig ...
Excellent Siew Yoke Mee, Pork ribs with Lam Yee, and of course the 'signature' Chicken Wings

News Straits Times describes Live&Loud KL ...

Here's a little write-up of the gig I attended at KLCC, from New Straits Times ...

KUALA LUMPUR: The week-long Live and Loud 2007 concert continued to draw the crowd last night with performances from local and international artistes.

Soulful Dayang Nurfaizah opened the Acoustic Night at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here with her hit song, Kasih, and Christina Aguilera's Hurt.

The night's performance continued with British singer James Morrison, whose good looks had the women asking for more.

The 23-year-old serenaded an estimated 2,000 fans with songs such as Wonderful World, The Pieces Don't Fit Anymore and You Give Me Something from his debut album Undiscovered.

The night ended with a performance by Australia's very own King of Ballads, Rick Price.
The 46-year-old crooner delighted fans with evergreen songs such as Heaven Knows and Not A Day Goes By.

Ju says...
Pity they got the sequence wrong!
Dayang opened, followed by Rick Price and it was James Morrison who finished off the Live and Loud performance. Hmm, did the writer actually go for the gig!?

James Morrison ... Live & Loud KL '07 @ KLCC

Live and Loud KL '07 @ the KLCC Plenary Hall 2
presents ... James Morrison!

Heh heh ... this guy was actually the Sound Check guy. Most of us thought it was James on stage!

Welcome to Malaysia, James! He was so entertaining all night, with little anecdotes between his numbers, and just loved shouting out "Te-ri-ma ka-sih!"
James brought the house down with "The Pieces Don't Fit Anymore" and "You Give Me Something" .... "You give me something, That makes me scared alright, This could be nothing, But I'm willing to give it a try"
We were sat close to the stage all night, but during the final encore, everyone dashed stage-side, and we got up close and personal with James! Some mad fans even ran on-to the stage straight after to steal his water bottle ... Haha!

After the gig ...

Rick Price ... Live & Loud KL '07 @ KLCC

Thursday night, 29th November 2007
KL's Live and Loud '07 party!
Stars - Rick Price and James Morrison

Rick Price was great all night, with his beautiful voice and guitar playing, but HEAVEN KNOWS as his finale brought the house down! "She's always on my mind, From the time I wake up, Till I close my eyes.. She's everywhere I go, She's all I know..."

ps. Dayang Nurfaizah was an excellent 'starter'... and I even got to meet her prior to Rick Price starting his set.

Tanners @ Bukit Tunku, KL ... Excellent lamb shoulder!

Tanner's wine bar & bistro is operated by Michael Tan ...
Add: H2 Taman Tunku, Off Langgak Tunku, Bukit Tunku, KL
Tel: +603 6201 3222
Mobile: +6017 681 5825

I was tempted by a Facebook Group to visit this newish restaurant ... and we were certainly not dissapointed. The service was prompt, courteous and a lot of fun (Michael hails from somewhere near Liverpool) ... and I was so excited when I saw BUBBLE and SQUEAK on the menu, and even more so when I heard he could make me a CHIP BARM one of these days!

The piece de resistance ... Braised Lamb Shoulder ($37 - Very succulent, and delicious!).

The gals chose some fine dishes as well ...
Lamb and Beef Chirizo ($30 - I liked the sausages, and especially the sundried-tomato risotto)
Linguine with Meatballs ($32 - Tasty linguine, but perhaps a little too much sauce).

Overall, a great experience (We wanted a fast meal - but it turned out to be a delicious, and fun one too) ... washed down with some Sole still water ($11), Ladero Tampranillo 2006 (Glass @ $21), and Hugo Casanova Linaje Cab Sauv (Glass @ $19).

Melaka Street, SS2 in PJ

Add: 34, Jalan SS2/66, PJ
Tel: +603 7873 6232
One rainy evening ... decided to try out this restaurant along the front row of the SS2 square in Petaling Jaya (PJ). I was a little nervous about the quality of food as I observed only one occupied table when we arrived ... Hmm.
But that was soon replaced with confidence when the Sweet and Sour Fried Abalone Mushrooms arrived. Excellent!
The next dish was the Sizzling (Teet-Pan) Tofu, which was equally good, with a nice eggy base.
We found the Pandan Leaf Chicken (Is this Melaka fare?) to be a tad dry, and lacking in flavour, but still bearable!
The best dish however ... was the Curry Kapitan Chicken. Tasty, yummy, delicious, you get the picture! My makanpartner-in-crime noted that fresh spices were finely grated and used in the dish, indicating no 'instant mixes' were used, a refreshing change!
Ask for Alan when you are here, his rapport with the customers is great. Found out from him that Melaka St had been in operation for 2 years now ... GIVE IT A GO!

The dessert 'Ice kachang with gula melaka' could have been excellent if not for the powdered santan / instant santan used, the gula melaka was tasty as was the very finely chopped ice. Pity!
Here's the bill ... 69 bucks and 69 cents for all that good food. For all of us who like 4-D and numerology, this is one interesting bill ... check out the highlighted area on the bill!

Sparky and Lulu

Sparky came to greet me when I arrived at Ka's ...

AND, look who I saw for the first time ... Lulu!

Car plate ... AAA !

A E200 fully Brabus-ed out ... zooming down the NKVE towards Damansara at 160km/h ... Great registration! AAA 101

Kool & The Gang @ Live and Loud KL '07, KL

This was WHY I came out to Live and Loud ... Kool and The Gang. 70 million records, 3 decades later ... they performed in Stadium Negara. And they certainly ROCKED! Everyone danced the night away ... into the wee hours of Tuesday morning. Fabulous!

The group hails from New Jersey, USA and they didn't miss a beat all night ... great dance moves and perfect tempo ... just a lotta fun!
I was surprised at the extended instrumental passages as well as the brilliant drum solo at the end , but what got the crowd going were their evergreen hits ...
Fresh,
Joanna,
Cherish,
Jungle Boogie,
Get Down On It ... and the encore ...
Celebration !
Brought a chill to my spine and goosepimples to my skin, they were that good!

James Ingram @ Live and Loud KL '07, KL

James Ingram performed at Stadium Negara ... Part of the Live and Loud KL '07 festivities, on 27th Nov. Excellent!
This was my kind of music, as was the group of friends I went with ... Our 'retro night' LIVE! I estimated there to be about 3,000 fans in the old Stadium, and I was impressed by the sound technicians as well as the lighting, well done!
James Ingram, who hails from LA, USA, brought the house down when he sang his biggest hits ..
Just Once,
I Don’t Have The Heart , as well as
One Hundred Ways
This Grammy winner surprised all of us when he went down to the audience, and lucky Michelle got pretty close to him!

Thanks to Richard, we got some free passes (for both days - but only keen on watching James + Kool/Gang!) ... cheers!

Porridge restaurant, off Pudu

Location - Near Shaw Parade in Changkat Thambi Dollah / Jalan 1/77B, off Pudu in KL.
What I thought - Reasonable quality, but not spectacular. Very convenient though, as we went at 1am after the Live and Loud KL gig. Photos of that to follow ...
Beware! Its a rough area of town, so beware of snatch thieves etc.!
It cost - $115 for the eight of us

Restoran Wan Yit in Setapak, KL

We had a quick bite at Wan Yit in Setapak, KL prior to going for Live and Loud KL at Stadium Negara ... decent meal!
Claypot chicken rice, Prawn Mee, Fried Chicken (I liked this best), Chee Cheong Fun, Popiah, Steamed rice with Fatty Pork (This was good too), Double boiled soups - Old cucumber and Spinach.
Normally, my chosen dish would have been the excellent Penang Fried Kuay Teow, but the stall was closed ... bah!

Satay 'Sate Kajang Haji Samuri', Damansara Uptown

Didn't know there was a SATAY KAJANG HAJI SAMURI in Uptown, Damansara Utama ... until now! Somehow the one on the Kesas highway still tasted better ... had kambing, chicken AND beef too. I did love the Peanut Sauce with Sambal, simply excellent.
Add: Sate Kajang Hj Samuri - No. 79, Jalan 21/37, Damansara Uptown, PJ

Haagen Daz @ AEON Bukit Tinggi Klang

Haagen Daz has arrived in Klang ... hoorah!

We each had a scoop of ... Strawberry, Lemon Sorbet, Mango! Yummy!

Kinsahi Japanese, AEON Bukit Tinggi (Klang)

Kinsahi - AEON Bukit Tinggi Shopping centre (Klang), Lot F-11, 1st Floor.
Tel: +603 3323 2229
Our first visit to a restaurant in this new mall ... It has a good layout with nice corners and private 'boudoirs'!

Soft shell crab Temaki ($8), Gyoza ($5), Agadeshi Tofu ($6).

Mixed tempura ($15), Omelette Curry Rice ($12), Zaru Soba 'sort of like cha-soba' ($12 each).

Other items ... Ocha (Hot green tea) was $1 each, dad got an extra bowl of rice ($2) and the Egg Wasabi Mayo appetiser was $5. Total = $97
It was a nice simple Japanese meal, and overall I have to say I am impressed by the quality of concept + build that AEON Bukit Tinggi has achieved.

AEON - Jusco Bukit Tinggi mall

A new mall has opened up round the corner from my home ... Went for a visit one evening with mum and dad, and it was really impressive. Lots of nice stores, large retail space and plenty of parking, lots of food outlets (Some dubious I have to say ... pseudo-food I call it!), and great air-conditioning. The down-side? Traffic-jams in the vicinity!

There's even a mention on Wikipedia!
The ÆON Bukit Tinggi Shopping Centre is a shopping mall built on a 26-acre land with a built-up area of approximately 2.1 million square feet. Also popularly known as Jusco Bukit Tinggi, the shopping mall is located in the vibrant and modern township of Bandar Bukit Tinggi, the hub of southern Klang in the state of Selangor, Malaysia.
The RM350 million (approximately US$104 million) shopping complex was opened on 24th November 2007. Touted as the largest ÆON (JUSCO) shopping centre in Malaysia and South-East Asia (and third largest in Asia), the shopping complex has over 5,000 car park bays.
The AEON Bukit Tinggi Shopping Centre has a gross lettable area of approximately one million square feet. Restaurants, cafes, specialty and services stores, food court, leisure and entertainment stores, cinemas, sports and book stores can be found in the mall.

" Cannot wait? Eat next door! "

" Don't waste your calories on lousy foods! "

Sri Choon Keng Seafood, Pandamaran

Sri Choon Keng Seafood - 111 Jalan Jagong, Pandamaran, Port Klang.
(Closed on Mondays)
Tel: +6016 360 6581
Tel: +6016 296 2992

How to get there!
Not the easiest place to find, this restaurant would definitely be in my 'hardcore' category simply by virtue of being in a village within Pandamaran! Leave your valuables and expensive watches at home, and come decked out in slippers and t-shirt, and you will fit right in! No worries!!
i) Head down the main road in Port Klang, past La Salle Klang and all, towards Crystal Crown Hotel (I think the road is Persiaran Raja Muda Musa)
ii) Turn LEFT before you get to Crystal Crown Hotel
iii) This leads towards Pandamaran and Kim Chuan
iv) At traffic light, turn right (Utama - Perodua/Mitsubishi showroom)
v) Go straight, until you get to the next traffic light
vi) Turn right
vii) Look out for Restaurant 168, and turn into a VERY LITTLE LANE opposite this Restaurant 168 - This small lane is Jalan Jagong
viii) There's a Bak Kut Teh place next to the entrance of the lane
ix) Pat yourself on the back for finding the place!

What we had ...
1) Curry mee-hoon kuay (torn-up pieces of pan mee) with Cockles & Prawns
2) Hor Chien (Too oiley)
3) Pork with Yam (Rather good)
4) Chicken in red wine (The piece de resistance!)
Each dish came up to $14 - $15, with tea adding a further $3 to the bill. Total $63.

Nasi Lemak USJ, USJ14 in Subang

Located at USJ14/1 ... this has the best sweet nasi lemak sambal anywhere, I reckon!
Nasi Lemak USJ full review
I ta-powed the Nasi Lemak with fried egg, rendang beef and sambal sotong .. 6 ringgit. Not cheap, but good!

Goreng pisang @ USJ2 , Subang

This Goreng Pisang stall is a branch of the excellent SS2 one .. Located on the row behind Restoran Le Kwang (which is very famous for its Penang curry mee - Not tried it yet! Star Guide says its good) @ 1 Jln USJ 2/2C, Subang Jaya. Seems its a branch of the institutional SS2 gorgeng pisang stall
Found the goreng pisang to be excellent, with nice flakey 'loose' batter.
Butthe Lin-Koh is much better at the Imbi road side stall.

Kon Loh Mee @ Q-Up Restaurant, USJ 6 in Subang

The Star Guide to Malaysian Street Food - Subang

Hidden within the Goodyear Court apartments block, in USJ 6 Subang ... I stumbled onto this kon-loh mee place due to my new Star Hawker Food Guide (Thanks to Larissa & Chris!).
Found the Kon-Loh noodles to be not-elastic enough, but I did like the gravy. The char-siew and siew-yoke were rather good, and the Beef Briskets (Ngau-Lam) were nice and smooth. I did like the service from the mother and son combo, who were amused that I found their stall through the Star guide!
Just misses out on my 'Creme de la Creme' category, perhaps on a better day!

Ps. We were so hungry ... and the stall was serving plate after plate of kon-loh mee. So as a 'starter', we tried the Loh Mai Kai which was good! So was the Siew-Mai.

Rojak, Cendol and Burger time, Sri Hartamas

Tea time on a chilled out Saturday at Sri Hartamas ...
Previous blog of this excellent Indian Rojak = Rojak Review

Cendol's real good too, not so sweet.
2 rojaks + 3 cendols = Under 10 ringgit ... sweeeeet :-)

Chicken Burger 'Otai' was average ... 3 bucks for a special.

Garbage dump ... Sri Hartamas

Near Maybank in Sri Hartamas ... tsk tsk!

Hot chick ... Don't bang me!

Heh heh ... Rude or funny!?
Nice car sticker :-) on the back of this Vios ... we know who it belongs to!

Cilantro ... Fine dining!

One of KL's most reknowned restaurants, and its reputation is well deserved ...
Here is a review of my previous visit
Be prepared for a super-fine-dining experience, with excellent service, a good wine list, incredible starters, great mains, and fabulous desserts!

Cilantro @ Tel: +603 2161 8833
Micasa Hotel, 368b Jalan Tun Razak, KL.

The bread and butter is divine ...

The signature dish ... Unagi pan-fried with foie gras (Par supremo!), and Hokkaido scallops. There was even a 'pre-starter' aka chicken with truffles.

The mains ... Angus steak (Nice and juicy), and Salmon with Truffles.

And the best bit ... the 'chocolate cup-cake' (more like a souffle, but who cares what it is ... the chocolate filling melts in your mouth, and is complimented beautifully with cold Earl Grey ice-cream), and various other desserts.

The wine selection, 2 Australians ...
Jasper Hill shiraz / cab franc - Red. Not so good. Odd flavour.
Shaw & Smith M3 Chardonnay - White. DIVINE! Possibly best white wine I have had this year ... creamy, crisp, beautiful.

Jamming at Danny's

Nice old bottle of wine (Vasse Felix Cab Merlot) at Danny's on a Saturday afternoon ... and played with his Rainsticks musical instrument too! Sounds just like rain ... I kid you not.

Then Danny showed that he could not only sing...

This tickets went to waste ... couldn't find anyone who wanted to go for A1 Grand Prix!

Ribena - Lemon Light ... FREE!

" Free must take ! "
As we were finishing our BKT meal, we were given some promotional 3M Magic-tape (Cellophane tape), then when we walked out ... we were offered a bottle of Lemon-Ribena Light by Maxis. The gals were then given a box of the stuff! Yes, ONE WHOLE CARTON! Here's Danny grabbing them for us ...
Turns out to be not very nice actually, I'd stick to plain ol' Ribena or Sparkling Ribena instead.

Teluk Pulai Bak Kut Teh, Klang

And the morning after ... 12 hours after Ban Lee ... another BKT feast once again, this time in Klang! And it was goooooooood :-) We tried 3 different cuts of pork : 1/2 fat-1/2 thin, Spare Ribs, 5-flower meat.
First time I had it in bowls at my regular joint (Teluk Pulai, near ING-Maybank Building, Bukit Raja Klang), and it turned out EXCELLENT!

Ban Lee Bak Kut Teh, Jalan Ipoh (KL)

Following our return from Genting, the lot of us went for some KL style Bak Kut Teh along Jalan Ipoh ... Previous full review
Learning point - I now like BKT served in bowls, with the other bits and pieces (Eg. Tau-foo-pok, foo-pey, etc) served separately. Seems to bring out the true flavour in the pork, rather then confusing the pallet with various flavours!

Genting International Magic Festival

Following a really nice dinner at The Olive, we were chauffeured to the Arena of Stars. My first magic show since I was a child! And it was really good :-)
We had excellent seats too, 3 rows from the stage, and I sat behind Hannah 'FHM Malaysia' Tan!

Some of the acts which performed included ...
James Dimmare - The opening act ... card tricks etc.
Les Arnold & Dazzle - The birdy act!
Jeff McBride - Seems he is the only 'caucasian' who can do the famous chinese mask-swopping act!
David & Dania - Great costume changes one after another ... cool!
Magic Wave - Dutch duo with the sandy-beach act, refreshing!
AND a bunch of great dancers from Australia!

Here's one of our favourites ... Ed Alonzo 'The Misfit of Magic'.

And my favourite ... Ayala and Tanya 'the award winning illusionists'. HOT-test act of the night, excellent!

Here's all the performers at the end of the show ...

Myself chilling at the Maxim bar area after the show ... thanks so much for the treat and opportunity to go!

Ps. It was a COOOLLLLLDDD night at Genting, 16c only! Brrr....
Great experience to be chauffeured from Genting Hotel to the Arena of Stars in a brand new Genting owned S350 Merc ... yum! For refreshments, there were tubs of pop-corn and Evian water, nice!

The Olive, Genting Highlands

A Friday evening trip to Genting Highlands' Genting Hotel ... The Olive. Always wanted to dine here and had the pleasure of doing so last week, it was good! Thanks for the treat :-)

Starters ... We had lobster bisque, salmon, scallops and carpaccio of wagyu et al. All very good!

The mains ... Piece de resistance 'Wagyu tenderloin' (Tender, juicy and beautifully cooked - what more need I say!), beautiful beef ribs in a delightfully tasty sauce, and surprisingly good squid ink pasta!

The wine choice for the night ... very good too.

Ps. Description from Genting's website...
"Located at the Lobby Floor of Genting Hotel, the Restaurant exudes a modern, arty design with a casual, welcoming feel in its 'olive' colours and warm lighting. Offering Continental cuisine served in a trendy yet elegant ambiance, the food features textures, flavours and styles in a blend of classical recipes with contemporary ingredients and tastes. There are choices of the best cuts of meat, seafood, salads, pizzas, delicious desserts, fine wines and more. Juicy, succulent Wagyu Beef is the house specialty. The promise of a gastronomic adventure awaits."

Friendster Cafe, Damansara Perdana

My bro, Jack, was in transit to Bandung ... so we hung out at Kota Damansara / Damansara Perdana's Friendster Cafe. This was a place I had heard of before, having been named after the internet app, but not been until this moment.

Add: Friendster Coffee & Restaurant, LG01-A Emerald Plaza, Jalan PJU 8/3A, Damansara Perdana.
We had the Friendster Super Burger ($15.90 - rather yummy), some Twinning tea ($5.50 - Camomile of course), Boxing Chicken ($11.80 - this was good, despite the fluorescent red sauce that came with it!), Honey Green Tea ($6), and a Caramel Machiato ($13.50) asd well.

How about a lesson in grammar... duh!

Snack time ... New Twisties! 'Chipster'

Malaysia's 'favourite' Twisties brand has now come up with CHIPSTER ... and its good!

Washed it down with some Sparkling Ribena ... fab.

Chee Cheong Fun @ San Yu Lik, Cheras

Gotta love Chee Cheong Fun ... excellent comfort food :-)
Click here for a full review of this amazing place in Cheras!
$10 bucks in total for the 2 plates below (approx. 45 cents per item - I had ELEVEN items!), but do pass on the red-bean/lor-hon-koh herbal drinks, too sweet.

900th Blog ... Nostalgia!

Welcome to my 900th Blog!

Is my blog a FLOG (food-blog) , or dive-log ... golf-log? Nah .. I would simply describe it as My Blog.
I remember my early days of being on-line, and always feeling the need to share what I was doing, eating, watching with my family (who were then) abroad, and likewise my friends who were spread out across the world (You know who you are!).

Here's an evolution of my Web Authoring days ...
1999 (My 'durian' website!)

2004 (My juliansi.com domain! Hmm, I miss that domain name!)

And now, since 2006 ... My juliansi.blogspot.com site!

Anyway, thank you for sticking with my blog for the past 1 year and 4 months. Has it been 485 days? Time flies! Ah... Its funny thinking back how I started my first blog after going for my first dive trip in Redang back in July 2006 :-)

Blogs move on ... We move on ... Time moves on. The best is yet to be!
Wikipedia ...
A blog (a portmanteau of web log) is a website where entries are written in chronological order and commonly displayed in reverse chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on art (artlog), photographs (photoblog), sketchblog, videos (vlog), music (MP3 blog), audio (podcasting) and are part of a wider network of social media. Micro-blogging is another type of blogging which consists of blogs with very short posts.
As of September 2007, blog search engine Technorati was tracking more than 106 million blogs.

House of Frankfurt, Bangsar

House of Frankfurt
Add: 12 Jalan Telawi 5, Bangsar Baru, Kuala Lumpur
Tel: +603 2284 1624

On a rainy evening ... Average german cuisine! Thuringer Bratwurst with Mash Potatoes ($32 - good!), and the signature Pork Knuckle ($50 - you guessed it ... with mashed potatoes, we declined the sauerkraut) . We had this with some French Fries and a Mixed Salad on the side. Along with 2 glasses of wine (One average-tasting Cab Sauv $19, and a very nice Fontana Candida white $23), the bill came just shy of RM$150.
I was rather dissapointed at the Pork Knuckle, which I thought was dry compared to Jarrod & Rawlins . Perhaps the one at Checkers Damansara Heights is also better? However, the home-made MUSTARD was excellent, especially considering I don't usually take mustard!

For afters ... it was back to SS2 'hawker centre' for some tong-sui. Had Leng Chee Kang ($2 each), and couldn't resist trying the Fish Balls. Not bad!

Yanna Fried Chicken & Sweet n' Sour Fish

Yanna's home cooking ... simply magnifique! Best fried chicken I have had in ages, went perfectly with the fresh sweet and sour fish!

Coco's been itching .. so ...

Restoran Oversea (Imbi) Sdn. Bhd.
Add : 84-88, Jalan Imbi, 55100 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Tel : +603 2144 9911

Founded in 1977, this main-stay of Malaysia's chinese restaurant scene had its first shop at this very location ... thanks to Larissa's and Chris' visit, and Hon's generosity ... we had a meal here! And it was AMAZING!

MEAL 4 - Overseas Restaurant at Jalan Imbi, KL
We had some Herbal soup, Spinach in broth, Signature-dish prawn (The big head version was out of stock ... but the sticky soya sauce was incredible tasting), Kau Wong veges (stir fried to perfection - simply amazing!) ... and the superb "Ham Yui Fah Lam Poh" aka Chinese Bacon with Salted Fish (BEST I EVER HAD!).

The piece de resistance ... BEST ROAST PIG ever on a bed of Glutinous Yam Rice. DIVINE! (Rainbow Palace has now been relegated to second !)

We had a great time ... even Iron Chef Chris gave the piggy his thumbs up!

Ps. Here are some directions I found on Overseas' website!

One Utama ... shopping with Chris and Larissa

All sorts of stuff going on in One Utama ... here are just some that Chris and myself observed as we were waiting for Larissa spend her Singapore dollars!

I like this STAR WARS display ...

Lets have a drink ... Orange and Lychee, nice combo!

We were at the Skechers shop ... and Chris decided to make these 2 'ecko' Rhinos fight! The lady didn't want to give them to him!

Hmm, seems like HP was having an event to see if these fellas could stay in a glass box for a week or something ... just to win a 'souped up PC' .. DUH! Some people will do anything for their moment of fame ...

Ah ... my favourite YELLOW MAN!

No road tax required

Spotted at the cool bicycle shop adjacent to Village Park (Nasi lemak haven) in Damansara Utama!

Nasi Lemak ... Village Park in Damansara Utama

Yummy Nasi Lemak for lunch with Larissa and Chris ... various permutations of rendang beef, fried chicken, rendang chicken, sotong, fried v boiled egg etc :-) The Sirap Limau was OVERLY sweet though, bah!

Yanna Steam Chicken

Do remember that a while ago, I decided NOT to rank any of Yanna's home-cooking 'CREME DE LA CREME' or 'HALL OF FAME' ... otherwise it would consistently be top of my league! This meal was no different, simply magnificent as always :-)

Nam Heong chicken rice, USJ9 at Subang

This Nam Heong is located at USJ 9 in Subang ... just a consistent, but not brilliant, place to have CHICKEN RICE ... at most times of the day! Seems that Esquire Kitchen Group bought them over a few years back, and the quality has deteriorated somewhat. However, it is still decent I would say. The chilli is 'not too overpowering and stinky', so I like that!
This $45 meal consisted of ... Kampung Chicken for three persons (slurp! the portions aren't too generous, so that feeds something like two people!), Pork Ball soup, Tung Poh pork, and Choy Keok.

Lychee pudding

Ten Ten makes a good Lychee pudding ... convenient, economical and available in Tesco supermarkets!

Fridge magnets from under the sea!?

I love my new fridge magnets!
Tawau Airport rocks :-)

Buffalo Wings @ Chilli's in One Utama

Some research on the web, and the following popped up ...
1 Utama Shopping Centre is one of the top destinations for shopping in Klang Valley . Located at the entrance of Bandar Utama along the Damansara-Puchong Expressway, it is easily accessible by visitors coming from Petaling Jaya, Damansara, Kepong, Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, Bangsar and basically anywhere else around the Klang Valley . It boasts 6 retail floors and has over 5 million square feet of retail space so wear comfortable shoes when planning a trip to 1 Utama. The shopping centre is divided into seven different themed zones; Highstreet, Oval, Rainforest, Promenade, Centre Court , Courtyard and the Entertainment Zone . Each zone has something different to offer and shoppers can expect something unique at every corner.
Anyway, me and the gals went for a drink one evening, but Delicious by Ms Read decided to close at 10pm, so we went upstairs to Chili's instead. Of course we couldn't just have a drink there, so tempting ... we succumbed to BUFFALO WINGS. Nice!

Coco and dad

Hmm, who's the master and who's the pet!?

Bee's Cafe, Giant in Bukit Tinggi (Klang)

Always a good place to go get some snacks for tea!
We got some other stuff as well, but ate them all before I could shoot them ... here's the CURRY CHICKEN donut (I kid you not!), and a Sausage-bun-pizza-style thingy!

Coney Dog ... A&W - Bukit Tinggi, Klang

Located at the Petronas gas station in Bukit Tinggi, Klang .. this is great comfort food, just like the days when my dad took me to the Jalan Nanas branch! Ah, nostalgia...
Price? RM$9.40 for a Coney Dog meal, which includes yummy tasty fries, and a refreshing Root Beer.

Some research from A&W's website...
One hot day in June of 1919 in Lodi, California an entrepreneur named Roy Allen mixed up a batch of creamy root beer and sold the first frosty mug of this delightful beverage for one nickel. Now, more than seventy years later, A&W Root Beer® is the world's number one selling root beer and is still mixed fresh daily and sold at hundreds of A&W® restaurants.
Allen purchased the formula for his root beer from a pharmacist in Arizona. To this day, the unique blend of herbs, spices, barks and berries remains a proprietary secret.
With the success of his first root beer stand in Lodi, Allen soon opened a second stand in nearby Sacramento. It was there that what is thought to be the country's first "drive-in" featuring "tray-boys" for curb side service, opened up.
In 1922 Allen took on a partner, Frank Wright, an employee from his original Lodi location. The two partners combined their initials - "A" for Allen and "W" for Wright and formally named the beverage, A&W Root Beer®. Three units were opened in Sacramento, then on to other northern and central California locations and to the states of Texas and Utah.

Car Registration WP8 !

A very nice registration number on a modest car! Spotted in SS2 ...

BMW M5 by night...

Spotted one night in Petaling Jaya ... looks just like the 525i Sport and 530i Sport ... but packs a whopping 500 bhp under that bulging bonnet! Oh yes, it costs the price of TWO 525i Sports!

Pet shop @ Pudu ... duh cute name!

Wow-wow & Meow-Meow ... duh why not WOOF-WOOF!?

Nasi Lemak 'Pak Naseer' on-board Air Asia

Air Asia was our mode of transport to and fro Tawau during our Roach Reef trip ...

I was enticed by the "Rumour has it one of the best nasi lemak is to be had on Air Asia's morning flights ..." Uh... It was OK I guess for airline food. 8 bucks, nothing to shout about, but nothing much to complaint about too! Sure beats MAS food I have to say :-)

Roach Reef - Scenery

Roach Reefs Resort ... A comfortable resort situated on a private, man-made tropical reef about 25 mins by speed boat from Balung River, Tawau. Its location, right at the edge of the Borneo shelf and less then 50 mins away from Sipadan Island, makes it a paradise for divers and non divers alike.
Roach Reefs is the outer most reefs from Tawau, built on by the sinking of 2 used steel barge in 1993. Roach Reefs Resort used to be a private retreat for friends and relatives, however under new management, this unique reef is now open to the world!

Mid-Rock, Roach Reef off Tawau in Sabah.

I met a lady from Japan, tender age of 65, who celebrated her 600th dive ... and she only started diving little more then 5 years ago. What a feat!

Roach Reef - Mid Rock & Corner Point

Last day of diving ... Mid Rock and Corner Point. Roach Reef Rocks!
Shooting stuff which is small, and nervous ... teaches a diver about patience! I am trying to shake my moniker of 'Torpedo Ju'!

More critters ... large and small! Hey, Mr Moray's got a shrimp on his eye!

Gotta love them nudis...

I will endeavour to improve on my wide-angle shots in 2008!
Do you see the resemblance? I do!

Roach Reef - Corner Point, Mid Rock & Mid Coral

More underwater seascapes and critters ...
Roach Reef's Corner Point, Mid-Rock and Mid-Coral !

Remeniscence of Lembeh Straits ... Harlequin Ghost Pipefish

Yin-tze with Obata-san and Morie-san, our lovely DMs. Lets do the Conga!

Check out these shrimps ... Preggers!

Sipadan's native Hawknose fish.

Gotta love them nudis ...

I think these were the most challenging shots of all the 12 dives ... nervous, fast and bloody small!

Macro-mania ...

A few more creatures ...

Roach Reef - Lobster Point, Viking Point, Barracuda Sanctuary

Underwater scenes ... Lobster Point, Viking Point, RRR's House Reef, and Barracuda Sanctuary!

Love the challenge of shooting nervous fishies!

Roach Reef - Meals

Thanks for bringing along the OLD PAR, Endee!

Some meals we had on the various days... It was good, wholesome and simple food.
The final day ... 100th Dive celebration meal! Scrumptious!
Here's the lovely breakfast just before we left for Tawau ...
Some of the goodies we brought along!

Roach Reef - The journey

Here is a photo-blog of our group's journey to Roach Reef, off Tawau in Sabah ... this past Deepavali weekend!
Endee and Yin-Tze planned a diving trip to Roach Reef, which is off Tawau ... and we went along :-) Flew in to Tawau via Air Asia ... and then a PICK UP TRUCK took us to the jetty, somewhere through the wilderness (Palm Oil plantations - VERY BUMPY RIDE!) of Tawau.

Here is Roach Reef ... very picturesque, this man-made island resort!

The accommodations were simple and good ... en-suite shower/toilet, and fan in the room.

Where we had our daily meals ... and other shots of Roach Reefs Resort (RRR) ...

Mei Tian Steamboat, Bukit Tinggi (Klang)

Simple yin-yang steamboat (Soup on one side, Tomyam on other side) in Klang ... Nice and cheap! $25 for 2 persons, and $5 extra for straw-mushrooms ... and the coconuts were delicious too!
There are so many new steamboat places popping up all over Bukit Tinggi area, near Bandar Botanic, in Klang ... and they all seem to be doing well too! Many are claiming to get their supplies from Pulau Ketam, signifying 'freshness' ... wonder how true these claims are! We did enjoy the 'fish noodles' at Mei Tian though!

Full detailed review of this Curry Mee place!

Zouk Mambo Jambo , Kuala Lumpur

Zouk @ 113 Jln Ampang, KL
Tel: +603 2171 1997
Last night, on Deepavali Eve, it was Mambo Jambo night at Zouk with DJs Leonard T and Alex. And it was a great party!

Illusion
"1 shot each of vodka, Cointreau, Bacardi white rum, Blue Curacao, Midori poured into a shaker filled with ice and topped up with pineapple juice" ...
I say, RATHER TASTY! (After enjoying 10 shots? Lost count!)

Chicago - The Musical

Chicago - The Musical has finally arrived in Malaysia!
This multi-award winning musical was presented at the Plenary Hall, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from Nov 6 to 10. I had the privilege of being invited to watch the Deepavali-eve performance last night ... and it was fabulous!

My favourite musical numbers include All That Jazz, When You’re Good to Mama and Razzle Dazzle of course. The surprise excellent number of the night was when Amos (Roxie's hubby) proudly claims paternity, and still nobody notices him , sung to the tune of "Mr. Cellophane".

Here's a write up from The Star ...
The bold and edgy musical by John Kander, Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, holds the record for being Broadway’s longest running musical revival. It follows the capers of Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly as they race against the clock for fame and freedom.
The musical boasts a cast of more than 50 performers, orchestra and crew members, and is produced by Bronowski Productions, a leading London-based production company specialising in musical theatre and opera performances worldwide.
Chicago the Musical is set in the roaring 1920s and was originally performed as a concert in 1975. The restaging on Broadway in 1996 earned the musical numerous Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival and has become the longest running revival on Broadway. The award-winning Hollywood film adaptation in 2002 starred Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger and Richard Gere.

Chicago - The invite!

My invite to Chicago ... CIMB is doing some serious amount of marketing!
Thanks for the invite!

Ps. My scanner is kaputz ... yellow streaks, grrrr!

Nasi Padang, Old Shapadu Highway (Port Klang)

Nasi Padang found on the Old Shapadu Highway, head in the direction from Port Klang towards Klang town, and its located on the right-hand side of the road, about 5 mins drive after the 50 cent toll. It was a good rice meal especially the choices of Kurma / Rendang / Omelette, but the Beef Soup wasn't so good.

Ps. A brief description from Penangfaces' Blog ...
"Nasi padang is not exactly Malay food but I believe originates from Indonesia... They use basic ingredients like kunyit, serai, santan and chilies. So, one gets a mild tasting food unlike nasi kandar which is loaded with lots of spices. Their food is rather healthy because they have several types of vege like the hairy gourd, angle gourd, bitter gourd cooked minus cili and santan. "

Heng Seng 'Penang' Lok Lok (Steamboat), SS2

I am really getting hooked to this Lok Lok (Simple Steamboat) stuff ... love the chilli + satay sauce mix, to go with the 'flying saucers' (Nostalgia... Remember the old days at Ban Lee in Berkeley, dad?) and pork balls. Yummy!
The aunty who operates the stall (at Selera Makan hawker centre, SS2 in PJ) tells me she has been here for 30 years, wow!

They also make their own Yam Cakes 'Wu Tau Ko' the Penang-way ...

Ice Kachang ... SS2 Selera Malam, PJ

I don't ever remember visiting this Hawker Centre in SS2, Petaling Jaya ... but it seems this Ice Kachang stall has been operating for 20+ years. It's very yummy!
What I love most about it ...
1) Not very sweet
2) Only consists of corn and red beans (NOT kidney beans)

Yeong Shang @ Sports Bar @ TTDI

The bros and myself wanted to have a beer following the Loh See Fun, so we drove around Taman Tun until we found this joint ... It was one of these places that 'only regulars frequent', so everyone starred at us as we walked through the door into the smokey-poorly-lit pub! Haha... 36 ringgit for a jug of Carlsberg was not bad at all for us light drinkers!

Shang's damn kewl cast ... Thanks to American healthcare insurance!

See you soon, bro ... bon voyage!

Yeong Shang @ Mama Kitchen, TTDI

Shang was going to leave for the States (via Singapore) the day after (Wednesday, 7th Nov), so Vincent and myself met up with him ...

Vincent really enjoyed the HUGE CLAYPOT of Loh She Fun ($10 - great value, such huge portions!) ... Mama Kitchen is also famous for its Roast Pork Kon Loh Mee ($16 - it was OK, especially if you like fried garlic bits!), Homemade Yong Tau Foo ($8 - acceptable), and Siong Tong Yuen Choi (Spinach in soup @ $10). We washed it all down with refreshing Soya-Cincau aka Michael Jackson @ $1.50 each.

Always love going to Yippee Cup in SS2 :-)
My usual drink, Lychee Juice with Nata D' Coco ($6 each) ... tried both the standard COLD, and also the WARM variant!

Decided to try the Hainanese Chicken Chop with Rice covered in minced chicken sauce ($8.50) ... and it was darn good! Total bill for the 3 items, only 25 ringgit.

Dynasty Hotel - The W/C!

Interesting signage at Dynasty Hotel ... hmmm!

This one looks like something from an airplane loo ...

And this one ... translated into English says ... "Toilet seat is to be sat on, not stepped on!"

Dynasty Hotel - A jolly good time!

New friends from Japan made the evening VERY lively!

Nice pineapple!

Dynasty Hotel - Tang Palace Dinner

This blog is long over-due, must have been the Macallan's that made me 'forget' to blog this!
Thanks to Ka for the dinner treat at Dynasty ...
Add: 218, Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur
Tel: +603 4043 7777

The food is good ... but I only managed to 'shoot' 2 of the dishes, the good Sweet and Sour Chicken (Must try pork next time) ... and the Lamb Chop served individually which makes me HALL OF FAME! YUMMY!!

Yummy Dole pineapple from Singapore ... and the evergreen Macallan of course!

Yeong Shang @ Delicious Kitchen, Jusco Klang

Yeong Shang was back in town from Los Angeles for his granny's 90th birthday ... welcome back, bro. Poor fella had a triathlon mishap, and he wasn't even racing ... hence the crutches!

It was a simple dinner at Delicious Kitchen, which is a rip-off/copy of Esquire Kitchen, in Jusco Klang, before we met up with Eugene Teh.
Add: G24, Bukit Raja Shopping Centre, Persiaran Bukit Raja 2, Bandar Baru Klang.
Tel: +603 3342 0992
Sweet and sour Wantons ($9 - taste just didn't come close to Esquire Kitchen's!) ,
Cha Chiang Mien noodles ($6.20 - GOOD! Better then Esquire),
Tong Poh Pork ($13 - Not bad , but a little too 'watery'),
Man Tous ($0.70 each),
French beans ($11 - oily), and
Salted Fish Fried Rice ($12.80 - poor again).

Pan's at Subang ... dissapointing

Pan's at Subang was a real dissapointment when I felt a hunger pang some nights ago ... Grrr. They even serve IKAN BILIS HEADS in their nasi lemak, eeeew! At least the lady boss promptly replaced it with ikan bilis 'bodies' hahaa :-)
The cincau longan was simply like sugared water ... not nice!
I used to remember it was better ...

Golf @ Bukit Kemuning

Gary, Ka and Jeanette had a round with me in Bukit Kemuning on a cloudy cool and VERY WINDY Sunday :-) Proud that I shot 51+51 despite the strong winds ... fun round!

Ka owes us 2 jugs of beer ... Twice he missed going pass the Red Tees!

We tied the 18th, with a bogey each ... so scissors-paper-stone was the only way to settle this ... Ka won!

Lucky kopitiam, Section 17 (PJ)

Usually have dinner at this tai-chow, but looks like it is a kopi-tiam with lots of stalls by day! Average kon-loh mee, simple pork mee, and poor chee cheong fun.

Pavilion, KL

Gotta go explore more of this mega-mall, but so far it didn't really impress me ... I was surprised to see UK's "YO SUSHI" here in KL though!
Happy Deepavali!

J.Co Donuts, Pavilion (KL)

Visited the newly opened Pavilion in KL, next to Menara Cosway ... was surprised to see a long queue of people heading to J.Co Donuts ... so we had to queue up too! It was interesting to see so many gourmet varieties of donuts, but they didn't really impress me with the taste ... Reasonable though, 20 ringgit for a box of dozen donuts.
Located at LL1.05, Pavilion KL, 168 Jalan Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur.
Call them at +603 2141 7751.

The varieties above included...
Glazzy, Al Caponne, Copa Banana, Coco Loco, Don Mochino, Tira Miss U, Miss Green T, Why Nut? and Crunchy Crunchy.

Chinese desserts, off Pudu

Average soya-ginko and egg custard dessert down the road from the yummy curry wild-boar! At least it was reasonably priced at $4 for the 2 bowls.

Curry wild boar - Near Pudu, KL

According to BabeinthecityKL's Blogspot ... this place is called Keong Kei Poh Ban aka Double-boiled soup. Thanks for the tip off! It was well worth the track there all the way from Klang one rainy evening :-) Its located opposite Shaw Parade in Changkat Thambi Dollah / Jalan 1/77B, off Pudu.
The highlights were the Curry Wild Boar, Mui Choy Kau Yoke (Pork Belly with preserved greens), and the stir fried veges. The ginseng chicken soup was rather good too, especially on a surprisingly cool KL night.
