Tomoe Japanese Restaurant, SS15 Subang Jaya

Add: Tomoe, 1 Jalan SS15/5A, Subang Jaya
Tel: +603 5633 5919

Relatively new Japanese place, opened on the same row as my perennial favourite, Rakuzen. Lets see how it fares on a very rainy evening ...

Really good service, knowledgable staff, real Japanese chef, and nice simple decor ...

Yaki Tamago (RM$3) - Cheap! Pretty good (We like our Tamago cool and slightly sweet) ... nice start to our meal.

Spicy Tuna (RM$15) - Average!

Beef Curry Don (RM$22) - Large portion (You can also opt for a smaller portion), but I was rather dissapointed that it lacked potatoes and carrots. Not the best Curry Don I have had!

Gindara (RM$30) - Slurp. Pretty tasty!

Gosai Tofu (RM$20) - Truly dissapointing, the waitress did warn us that it had some japanese beans in it ... but we went ahead an ordered, this kimchi tasting dish. EEeeeeep! And those beans ... diabolical! Tasted like coffee?

Agedashi Misore Ankake (RM$13) - Hmm, very weird variant of Agedashi Tofu. Sigh, I prefer the original. This one was ovely starchy ... and duh ... odd.

Seafood Fried Rice (RM$16) - The Japanese always do fried rice well, not oily, but lightly fragranced and tasty.

Overall, at RM$137, rather good value, but I miss Rakuzen! Just not my cuppa ... ocha!? :-)
ps - No charge for Hot Ocha, nice touch!

Oops, I guess it depends on what you order as the only similarity between our orders are the Gindara.

Maybe yr better bet is Sushi Dokoro Maeshima. Just had an amazing steamed red snapper fish head there - light tasting but so sweet.

the Japanese bean izzit "na dou"? Heard that it is quite smelly ... isn't it?

The "japanese beans" that you described could be natto beans, a type of fermented soybeans. Highly nutritious but also an acquired taste. Most people I know hated the stuff at first taste... :)

Mimi & Mycoffee - Many thanks for the lesson in Japanese food :-) Just not to my taste! Perhaps others may like it ...

come across your post when I search for Tomoe.

Actually a few things to share with u, hope you dun mind.

1. Normally japanese beef curry doesn't have carrot onion etc inside. Because beef curry is not suppose to taste sweet but the original taste of mince beet.

2. As someone stayed in Japan for many years and have alot of Japanese frens in Malaysia. We reckon Tomoe is much better than Rakuzen since Rakuzen serve "improved localised" Japanese food instead of original japanese food.

Just my 5 cents. :)

Sure I don't mind :-) OOPS... I think I have been spoilt by various versions which do have carrots/potatoes/onions ... Didn't realise the original one doesn't have those veges!!

Ahh... Tomoe is more original. But guess some of us Malaysians are spoilt with localised versions :-)

Thanks for visiting my little blog. .. HAPPY MAKAN!
