His contribution in the Malaysian scene...
When you discuss jazz in Malaysia, one name always heads the list and that is pianist Michael Veerapen.
He began his career in jazz during the late seventies with his experimental band called "Vintage" and was responsible for organizing the Jazz Rock concerts in 1978 and 1979 which were landmark events in the Malaysian Jazz scene. His return from the Berklee College of Music in 1982 saw him continue his interests in jazz and he is currently credited with building it to its vibrant state today.
The jazz bar that he started in 1985 called "All That Jazz" acquired for itself a reputation for great music and it was the home of the Malaysian Jazz scene, with many musicians and singers having shared the stage.
His extensive music career has seen him perform all over the world as leader of his own group, as side man to many of the greats and as musical director to some of the leading Malaysia stars.
He released his debut album entitled "Pictures" in 1985, after years of patient waiting by his many fans. He has since been involved in a multitude of projects, ranging from composing the music for the launching of the Petronas Twin Towers to dance and music improvisations with Ramli Ibrahim.
