Its been a while since we went for a "Pasar Malam" at the ever-festive Malaysian Embassy, here in Abu Dhabi ... so we went 2 weeks ago when we received the email-flyer!

 

 

Wow ... Mr Nasir, the second secretary, hard at work at the Satay Station ... "Its all for charity", he reminded me!

His wonderful work ...

20 AED for 5 sticks ... a steal, considering we were 6,000 km from home. DELICIOUS!

We also had other dishes like nasi campur, nasi lemak ayam goreng ...

And wonderful Char Kuay Teow, malay-style. Delicious again!!

Previous visit: Way back in 2007 ...
Customer service: I previously had bad experience with cold food, items running out, but none of that this time. However, the cleanliness standard is still average at best, and they did forget to bring us our satay until we reminded them at the end of our meal!

Pretty good Assam Laksa, and Nasi Lemak with Ayam Masak Merah. Ahhh ... hard to beat Malaysia for tasty and good value food!


Funny what one craves for ... we craved Satay, which doesn't seem to be so readily available in Klang these days (Taman Gembira was closed, Emporium Klang was too far away ...), but glad we could enjoy some yummy satay at Penang Nyonya! The chicken was juicy, well marinated and the peanut sauce packed a nice punch.


And to cool us down ... Cendol.

What does Chinese New Year / CNY involve in our household ...

(1) Good alcohol - My 1st experience with non-Tanqueray / non-Bombay gin, bought a bottle of Hendrick's from Abu Dhabi Duty Free. Cost about 140 AED or RM$110, similarly priced to the magnificent Tanqueray Ten. Here's a nice article from The Star, Malaysia which describes how it is infused with essence of cucumber and Bulgarian rose petals!


(2) Damn good food - Here's some satay that Y-man personally brought over to our home. Slurrrrrps. Perfect with some good whiskey and gin!


(3) Family and friends ... and gambling :-) Photos will not be posted to protect the innocent!

We prefer breakfast-time at O&S Paramount!

My family have been frequenting O&S for breakfast since we were little :-) But this was the first time we showed up here for some dinner!

Otak-otak ... mediocre!


Satay - Not bad lar ... espesh cos its been so long since I had any!

Ikan bakar ... Pretty decent. Hokkien mee - I can't remember, yes it was that forgettable!

Overall, I'd certainly stick to O&S for its magnificent breakfast fare in the future!

Or how about something simpler ... Mee Siam. My favourite was Telur Goreng Masak Kicap, perfect comfort food :-)

Before I left... I went for a walkabout on the inside, and was greeted by this fancy spiral staircase. Ahh ... the joys of having a Malaysian embassy in a foreign town that us nomads are residing in!!

Thanks to LL, we registered with the local embassy here in AUH (Abu Dhabi), and went along for the Open Day, celebrating both Merdeka 52 as well as Hari Raya!

Oh ... oh ... I didn't have a batik shirt, I went along anyway!

LL even gave us a ride there, located along Muroor Road it was rather easy to find!

There were probably about 200 Malaysians there, hmmm .. never knew there were so many of us in town!

It was time to raise the flag, oops Jalur Gemilang ... Have to admit I felt a bit of a patriotic rush as we all sang along to Negaraku! This was perhaps the first time since I left La Salle Klang in 1989 that I sang our national anthem. Has it been 20 years?

The newly appointed Ambassador made his speech, then it was time to dig in!

Chants of Merdeka ... Merdeka ... Merdeka!

Mental note ... Why are we all only patriotic when we are so far away from home ... Perhaps its cos we miss our families, the food, the rain and even the grass.

Starters :-)

Ah ... Kenduri with Kari Ayam, mee hoon, prawns and sambal sotong even!

Loved the rendang with Nasi Dagang, Nasi Kunyit and Ketupat too!

Our guest, KS, who just arrived from Malaysia earlier that morning, reminded us that this was called Sirap Selasih (Its got sago-like seeds of a fruit at the bottom of the drink), refreshing on a very hot evening!

Just as I thought I had enough, a man tapped me on the shoulder at the buffet tent, "Nak Nasi Lemak Bungkus, ke?" YES, please!

There was even Roti Jala :-)

Finally ... beating the crowd, or more like waiting for the food crowd to disperse, we took stick after stick of Chicken Satay. Best!
