Red Bull Air Race - Corniche, Abu Dhabi

An afternoon out at Abu Dhabi's lovely Corniche, with my Nikon D80 and Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8.

Wikipedia ... The Red Bull Air Race was established in 2003 and created by Red Bull. Its an international series of air races in which competitors have to navigate a challenging obstacle course in the fastest time. Pilots fly individually against the clock and have to complete tight turns through a slalom course consisting of pylons, known as "Air Gates". The races are held mainly over water near cities, but are also held at airfields or natural wonders.

The speed and the sound :-)

Incredible...

Marina Mall in the background ;-)

Seems these mad pilots high-performance aerobatic planes such as the Zivko Edge 540X, the MX Aircraft MX2, and the Extra 300SR, all of which are equipped with Lycoming engines. All three aircraft have a wingspan less than 8m and top speeds ranging from 252 to 265 mph (406 to 426 km/h)!

The Corniche was packed! How did everyone find out about the race I wonder ...

More shots :-) of these daredevils!

A couple more shots from Qualifying Friday ... the big race is tomorrow, but alas I won't be there.

More shots...

Another beautiful day at the Corniche...

The Abu Dhabi plane :-)

This was really good exposure for Abu Dhabi ;-)

A parting shot :-)

Thanks all for your kind words.

C&C - I shot on Aperture priority, decided to let the camera do the "thinking" for once! Most were about 1/640s shutter speed, not particularly quick, but I shot on "burst" mode.
