We started at One Utama's DELICIOUS BY MISS READ but we were too late to have dessert/have a drink there, as Shang and myself showed up at 10pm .... So we moved on to TTDI (Taman Tun Dr Ismail) .... I had Roti Pisang with curry & sambal (it was good!), and Shang had Roti Tisu (for the first time mind you, "This is cheap, 2 bucks!" - Which was quite good (I had some, and some more!), but not half as good as Raju's next to La Salle PJ!

Dinner at Chow Yang, SS2

Mum and Dad had frequented the 'old Chow Yang' in SS2 many a time in the past, but thought that it had closed down. Only after I heard from a colleague (who loves to eat!) that it was still there 'in another form', went for a towering Roti Tisu at Kayu Nasi Kandar (the original location of Chow Yang), and had 'sang-hah mee' with Aunty Peng and Aunty Chin recently ... did I find out that Chow Yang was very much still alive. BUT, could it cut-it when it came to a proper dinner!? We found out tonight!

As legend has it ... "And also heard that the Nasi Kandar boss opened a shop behind the old Chow Yang. The owner of chow yang coffee shop gambled everything away even his shop. Nasi kandar was just renting from him at the back of his shop with a small stall and the people queing up just to bungkus frm him or to eat there such good business.
Then when the tauke of chow yang lost his shop the owner of the nasi kandar bought over frm him n opened the one now thats at the back of chow yang now."
Another legend, "He was betting on World Cup soccer but I am not too sure which World Cup he lost everything. Most probably 2002 as 1998 would be too long ago."

This legend does tally with my brief investigation from one of the staff members on what really happened. I managed to ask 2 questions whilst waiting nearly 20 minutes for the food ...
J = How long have you been here?
CY = 3 years now
J = Is this the original Chow Yang?
CY = The owners have moved on (Duh!?), this is now run by those who were previously employed at the original Chow Yang.

We had pork stew-thingy, chicken with ginger, stir fry siu pak-choi, and to-fu with crabmeat.
And, no further review or recommendation required, because Iron Chef Mum has endorsed...
Mum's verdict : THUMBS UP! "I'll be back!"

Where? O & S Restaurant, Corner-lot along Jalan 20/14, Paramount Gardens, Petaling Jaya
If you know where the Tops supermarket is (Formerly the old paramount cinema. The O&S coffee shop is directly opposite the Caltex Station.
What & Who? Had breakfast at this legendary joint with mum and dad this morning
When? Open 6 days a week from evening to sell out. (close on mondays)
Why? We come here at least once in 2-3 weeks, to have our 'staple' Kai-see hor-fun (Chicken kuay teow in broth RM$4), Fried Yong-Tau Foo RM$5.70, Indian Rojak RM$4, Prawn Mee (Stan's fave), Fried Kuay Teow (Yum!), Kon-Loh Mee (Dad says it is good!), Curry Mee, Assam Laksa, Popiah, Penang style Chee cheong fun, Chicken Rice, Egg Tarts and to wash it all down some Michael Jackson (oops, Soya Cincau I mean), and Goreng Pisang.

The verdict ... A mecca of food. SPLENDID!

Met up with the trio at Uncle Lim's in Ikano, opposite The Curve in Mutiara, Damansara this afternoon. We tried some of the signature pieces of this establishment (one in a line of 'kopi-tiam wannabes from yesteryear!') ...

Uncle Lim's Laksa - As described by Uncle Lim, "The thick, creamy and aromatic gravy for this unique noodle dish is a concoction of de-boned mackerel, blended fresh herbal spices, suntan and milk. The noodle is actually Italian spaghetti and the taste is actually …………….mmmmm!!!" And, as described by Ye, "So so lah"

Kaya Toast & Half Boiled Egg - As described by Uncle Lim, "This humble traditional Malaysian snack is enjoyed by our forefathers in days gone by. Traditional roti slices is toasted over charcoal ember till golden brown. Electric toasters would have been convenient but we believe that the difference is well worth the extra efforts. The result is a crisp slice of toast with a soft centre. A good helping of homemade kaya is spread on one slice and premium grade Australian butter on the other slice. The result?? …………Mmmmm, just like those days,............ SYOK only!!" And, Half Boiled Eggs - "‘A’ grade omega 3 enriched eggs are scalded to perfection. Add premium grade light soya sauce and a dash of pepper and the resultant is a hot favourite among young and old. How else can one explain the continual orders of this item from our opening till our closing time". And, as described by Ye, "Egg is good, lemak!" Jules says, "Kaya toast, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmh!"

Coffee - Jules says, "Strong, good traditional taste of CONDENSED MILK, can't go wrong with that!"

Cham (Aka hybrid of COFFEE + TEA!) - Dunno what Ye said, but he had TWO, must have been good!

Soya Cincau (Aka MICHAEL JACKSON) - Love it! Better then Jenny Hung's opposite Jaya Supermarket. What's most special about Uncle Lim's soya-cincau is the fineness of the strands of cincau, which complements the soya which is not too sweet, darn good!

As a dessert (!), we had some Sister's CRISPY POPIAH (purchased from a little stall near Uncle Lim's / opposite Bread Story) ... Very nice! But pricey at RM$4.90 for the two.

Finally ... Decided to give the ol' DoggyMobile a work-out driving home ... but was nowhere as quick as that Scooby STI!

Chicken Rice in Eng Ann, Klang

Pre-lunch ;-) makan (Well, ta-pow / takeaway actually!) of Chicken Rice in Eng Ann, Klang ... I grew up on this Aunty's chicken rice, and it was a real treat at RM$4. What makes a good chicken rice meal?

• The rice = Oily but not overly so, smooth and fragrant (7/10)
• The chicken = The thigh was smooth, perfectly steamed, with strong hints of garlic (8/10)
• The chilli = EXCELLENT! Sharp but complementary (9/10)

Jules Verdict = 24/30
(Well worth a try!)

ps - Aunty still remembers I was 'away' for a 'few' years, she asked "When did you return?"

Kon Loh Mee at Sua Teng, Klang

Breakies on 2nd Sept - RM$3.50 for kon-loh mee with minced pork, and bowl of springy fish balls and nice foo-peh, and RM$1.20 for good loh-hon-koh herbal tea.

Prawn 'Sang Hah' Mee at Chow Yang, SS2

Had lunch today with Aunty Peng and Aunty Chin in the legendary Chow Yang of SS2 in Petaling Jaya ... On the menu was vege (yum!) and sang-hah mee (good!), washed down by some excellent liong-chah (herbal tea) ...
