Is Wah Chai the best kopitiam in Bukit Tinggi?

Add: Wah Chai Kopitiam, Lorong Batu Nilam 1D, Bukit Tinggi, Klang
Previous review: Been here many times, Here's one!

Mon Kee ... or Monkey? :-)

Really good char kuay teow :-) Plenty of wok hei!

Wah Chai is of course famous for its Wan Tan Mee, that is the "flagship" stall in this Kopitiam. Impressive eh, from a small stall to owning an entire kopitiam!

However ... the yong tau foo's stall served some mediocre pork balls :-(

Wan Tan Mee - Takeaway from Reem, Abu Dhabi

What does 15 AED (Or RM$13) buy you in Abu Dhabi these days?
I got a Wan Tan Mee (Kon Loh Mee) takeaway from Reem Island Cafe on Saturday, yumms!
Here's some directions on how to get there, and these are the GPS coordinates:
N 24° 29' 30.4"
E 54° 24' 04.4"

I asked for extra "cheng lat chiu" (Pickled green chilli) ...

Toast & Roast - Legendary char-siew of SS2

Add: 20, Jalan SS2/72, Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
Tel: +6016 682 2249
Opening hours: 8:30am - 4:30 pm (But according to Masak-masak, char siew is only available from 10.30 am onwards). Closed alternate Tuesdays
Located: Same road as New Paris Restaurant, 5 Stones and Amaya condominiums but at the far end, nearer towards Ken Damansara (Thanks, Masak-masak!)
Review: Masak-masak's wonderful food blog

Yes, you can find this legendary char-siew place on GPS, free from Malsingmaps I think. Just type in "Toast Roast" .. Yum. Check out description on the GPS, "BBQ Pork is good". It sure is!

We went early, I think it was about 11:30am when we got there, so we beat the lunch crowd which occupied the entire restaurant by the time we finished our meal 45 minutes later!

bbG likes the char-siew at Meng Kee (Jalan Alor), whilst I am a huge fan of the one prepared at Spring Golden (Shah Alam) and Overseas Imbi, whilst others are huge fans of Meng Kee in Glenmarie or Soo Kee in Ampang ... but Toast & Roast can give any of these outlets a "fight"! Sticky, beautifully roasted and full of flavour ... Good stuff :-)

I initially thought that the crunchies above my Hakka Mee was fried lard, but according to Masak-masak its actually fish bits, great to add some texture to the noodles, which in "kosong" form goes perfectly with the Char Siew :-)

We ordered some dumplings / wantan too ...

Char siew and Kon Loh Mee - Home sweet home!

I love Kon Loh Mee. I love it so much that it is actually a food category on this, my little blog!

This is the result of bbG's incredible effort in the kitchen recently ... perfection. Pure perfection!

Recipe: Thanks to ... Suum Cuique

Kedai Makanan Hup Kee - Noodles in Tanjung Malim

We really like Hup Kee in Tanjung Malim, Perak :-) Its been around for decades now, and is just a nice little place to have breakies. Get a cuppa tea from Hup Kee, and order noodles from one of the 4 or 5 stalls opposite.

I like the wan tan mee here ... But the one near the Leon Yew shop is probably even better!

They also have other dishes, such as claypot noodles, soup noodles, yong tau foo, fried kuay teow and curry mee!

My favourite wan tan mee in Klang - Wah Chai

Add: Wah Chai Kopitiam, Lorong Batu Nilam 1D, Bukit Tinggi, Klang

Wah Chai Kopitiam of Bukit Tinggi has a very popular Wan Tan Mee stall, which I believe is the anchor tenant of the entire kopi tiam! They have a large variety of different wan tan mees ...

Remember ... No pets allow, thank you for your cooperation!

I only like the "original" variant, simple and very delicious ... RM$4 buys you a good-sized plate of wan tan mee with about ten slices of char-siew, some blanched greens, a small bowl of wan tan soup, and springy perfectly sauced noodles. Damn good!

ps. The kopi tiam has many other stalls, including the chee yuk mee fancied by my dad!

Mak Ngan Kee - Mak's Noodles legendary in Hong Kong

Mak Ngan Kee
77 Wellington Street
Hong Kong Island
Tel: +852 2854 3871

YSL had insisted again and again that we HAD to give this place a try ... and it was fantastic!

Proud open kitchen, bowls neatly stacked up, master at work :-)

Skilled wanton-maker at work!

foodwink.blogspot.com describes this place really well ...
The wonton noodles are thin and springy, and served in a small bowl the traditional way. Wonton dumplings at the base of the bowl prevent the noodles from being completely submerged in the soup, thereby retaining their springy texture longer. The prawn dumplings are equally delicious, with a small quantity of the dried shrimp roes to draw out the sweetness of the prawns.
And the soup? It is simply unforgettable. Made with fresh shrimp, dried shrimp roe, dried flounder and pork bones, it is rich with a strong hit of fish flavours. We also try their wonton noodles with dried shrimp roes. The roes are not as salty as we expect it to be but compliment the noodles very well.

YSL recommended the Har chee wantan mee ... Interesting prawn roe powder on the top, and it was good!

What 30 HKD buys you ...

Prepare to spend about 100 HKD for 2 persons, or RM$40. Even Anthony Bourdain and the New York Times love it!

And as I was walking away ... I turned back to have one last look at HK's finest wantan mee :-)

Tsim Chai Kee - The "other" wan tan mee place, Hong Kong!

Tsim Chai Kee
Located: opposite the legendary Mak Ngan Kee
Add: 98 Wellington St, Central, Hong Kong
Tel: +852 2850 6471

Quaint old school wantan-mee-shop interior!

Walked into this shop, thinking it was Mak Ngan Kee, which turned out to be the wan tan mee place OPPOSITE this shop! Prices are half of Mak Ngan Kee, but I think the taste is also ... "half" of its legendary neighbour!!

Overly dry noodles, oyster sauce taste overpowers the dish ... but the wan tans are generously stuffed with minced shrimp, and delicious.

Wah Chai - Famous wan tan mee in Bukit Tinggi, Klang

Refreshing start to the meal, kat-chai suin-mui drink ;-)

Dad chose the porky noodles, looked good!

A visit to Wah Chai (Bukit Tinggi, Klang) for me ALWAYS means .. Wah Chai's Kon Loh Mee, oops Wan Tan Mee. Really good as always, only RM$4.

I love being home in Klang!

Whether its Wah Chai (Bukit Tinggi, Klang) Wan Tan Mee for breakfast ...

Or a home-cooked meal at mum's for dinner ...
Or breakfast the morning after at Klang Jaya ...
... Klang is where the heart is :-)
