Silk & Spice - Unique Thai restaurant, Sofitel Abu Dhabi

Add: Sofitel Hotel, Corniche Road - Abu Dhabi.
Tel: +971 2 813 7777

A really nice looking Thai restaurant that's open through Ramadan, serves some good beers and the desserts are nice too. Must try the main courses next time!! We tried the Khao Neow Ma Muang (Mango with Stick Rice, the Silk&Spice variant is served in a candle-lit balti dish!), as well as the evergreen Tab Tim Krob (Water chestnut dumpling with Jack Fruit in Coconut milk). Both were good!

Tiger by the bottle .. Cheers!

Private dining area, Japanese-esque with your feet in a "hole in the floor"!

Fancy interior ... Not the most Thai-esque, but hey... looks good!

We had 2 desserts ;-) They were both good!

La Beaujolais - Mercure Hotel, Abu Dhabi

We found a gem of an eatery in Abu Dhabi - Here is a quick review of our visit to Le Beaujolais, which has quickly become one of our FAVOURITE places to eat in the UAE!

Located: City Centre Hotel Mercure - Al Markaziyah, Hamdan Street
Opening hours: 12:00pm - 12:00am
Tel: +971 2 6333 555

Some of our starters, all of which were delightfully french and yummy ...
Escargots à la bourguignon (or snails in garlic and herb sauce) was served steaming hot and bursting in flavour, I wanted to lick the sauce off the cute serving dish! It was served with a hot, crusty baguette which we asked for re-fills ;-)
Baked Onion soup, 28 AED - Pretty good too!

One of the signature dishes ... Coq Au Vin, I loved it! At 78 AED, and this being a French brassierie, it really was a steal :-) The duck leg, at 95 AED, was really good too. I didn't try TS's 350g rib-eye steak (102 AED), but he seemed to enjoy it!

And to end off, another great value dish - Tiramisu, 28 AED. A large portion, and full of flavour, we loved it!

Overall - Delicious food, unpretentious and attentive service, a homely environment, and need I say it again - Great value :-) A wonderful restaurant that deserves to be visited again and again!

Macaroons from Switzerland - Luxemburgerli

Yay, a box of Luxemburgerli macaroons from Switzerland, thanks LM :-) Have to admit I never quite caught on to the macaroons craze, which seems to have followed the cupcakes fad! But these were good ... very good!

Made by Confiserie Sprüngli in Zürich, Switzerland, it is essentially a small macaron, they have a top and bottom sugar-based confection with a center cream filling. The Luxemburgerli is lighter than a macaron and is about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter.

Flavors include... vanilla, chocolate, stracciatella (chocolate chip), caramel, hazelnut, champagne, amaretto, chestnut, mocha, cinnamon, lemon, mandarin, and raspberry ... seems some of the flavours are seasonal.

History from Wikipedia ... Luxemburgerli were invented by the confectioner Camille Studer who brought the recipe to Zürich after creating them in a Luxembourg confectionery shop (Confiserie Namur) in 1957. The name Luxemburgerli is derived from the nickname which a colleague bestowed on Studer, whose family originated in Luxembourg.

From the fruity to the floral, from the spicy to the herbal, desserts are hand finished to perfection and simply bursting with scent and flavour. Taking inspiration from the wonderful world of perfumery, Deliciously Chocolate introduces a range of scented cakes, tortinos, patisserie, thinly sliced biscuits and macaroons.
The face and talent behind Deliciously Chocolate is dessert artisan, Ms Anizah Baharuddin, creating desserts marked by her own imagination.

“We have amazing cakes in our Signature Menu but for our new range, Scents and Sensibility, we wanted to push the envelope with our perfumery range based on the idea of pairing chocolate with aromatic accents. We experimented with floral, fruity and citrus notes and paired them with chocolate goodies and the ones we put into the menu are those which got us excited on the first bite,” Anizah said.

The new selection of desserts include aromatic cakes such as ‘Lavender Blue’, a scented layer of lavender white chocolate ganache cheesecake with blueberries on a bed of crumbly orange shortbread; and ‘Mary Rose’, a dark chocolate torte with layers of rosemary infused chocolate mousse and fragrant mango French buttercream.

“Everybody likes to indulge in a treat, which is essentially what we are about. All our exquisite desserts are a taste sensation using traditional recipes and authentic methods,” says Anizah.

On what inspires her latest range of desserts, she says, “I am inspired by anything and everything around me! This can be an idea for a flavour or a shape or an eating experience, but it is always grounded on the desire to create something delicious and different, unique to Deliciously Chocolate.

Other features to Scents & Sensibility include ‘Dark Spice’ patisserie, a sublime dark chocolate tart with an aromatic layer of fragrant caramelized banana in maple syrup, spiced with cinnamon, cloves, ginger, black pepper and paprika catering to dark chocolate lovers.

For those with a weakness for cupcakes, customers should try the ‘Bella Rosa’ white chocolate cake with rose scented strawberry filling topped with lychee buttercream; ‘Choco Cayenne’ chocolate with chili laced ganache.
Other features to the new menu include ‘Chocolate Ginger’ and ‘Chocolate and Orange Marble Loaf with Orange Blossom’ loaves; ‘Seasalt, Lemon Thyme’ and ‘Dark Chocolate’ cookies; and a range of Jasmine Green Tea, Peach and Vanilla and Violet, Rose & Blackberry macaroons.

All of Anizah’s artisanal creations are freshly made-to-order and are delivered to customers seamlessly using the modern conveniences of technology, thriving on their motto of being convenient but never compromising on quality.
“We are a very passionate team here at Deliciously Chocolate. Right from the sourcing and quality of our ingredients, to individually hand-making cakes and patisserie using traditional methods, to the delivery to our customers - perfection is the aim of the game!” quips Anizah.
With this passion comes quality, which is evident throughout their products. Every chocolate curl, glazed topping and garnishing is added as a finishing touch to their desserts with expert precision.

Desserts from Deliciously Chocolate are prepared on a daily basis and Anizah’s years of working with cakes and desserts account for the exquisite French-styled desserts including their ever-popular 'Tuxedo Salt', ‘Oblivion’ and sweet miniatures including Tortinos, Whoopies and Macaroons from the Signature Menu.

Deliciously Chocolate has expertly combined beauty and classic good taste in what they do, together with an intriguing sense of scent, taste and adventure.

Excellent ... Chicken wings, and mongolian-stir fried spicy chicken on the bone. And this is only for starters!!

bbG and I had both fatty lamb slices, as well as leaner beef slices ...

We chose the Yin Yang hot-pot combo ... herbal garlic-infused and perhaps ginseng-blended white broth on one side, and a spicy mongolian-paste sauce on the other side. Both are excellent!

Excellent ... possibly the best egg tarts in Abu Dhabi!
Warning! Be ready for a 25 minute wait from time of ordering for these beautieus ...

Wong Lo Kat - How convenient ;-) to have refreshing leong-char in a can!

ps. We had a giggle looking at the co-ho-nes spotted on the menu (Thanks to TS for teaching us about the pronunciation of this part of the anatomy!) ...

A Glorious Malaysian Galore - FELDA in Abu Dhabi

Event: 23rd Feb - 3rd March, 2012
Website: Mushrif Mall

Mushrif Mall hosted Malaysia's FELDA (Federal Land Development Authority) and its "A Glorious Malaysian Galore" event!
SAWARI - Satu Wilayah ... Satu Industri. Haha... who thinks of names and logos such as these!

According to Bernama, Malaysia's news agency, it is FELDA's initial step in its expansion into the Middle East market. The idea (It seems so anyway!) is for Felda's units to showcase their products here in Abu Dhabi, as part of the agency's development programme for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Gulf market.
Agencies and organisations showcasing their products include ... Delima Oils Products Sdn Bhd, Felda Trading Sdn Bhd and Koperasi Permodalan Felda. Tourism Malaysia and Malaysia External Trade Development Corp are also participating.

Officiating the event was the Felda Group chairman, Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad, but when we were there early on a Friday morning, the stalls hadn't properly been manned yet. I don't know why, but I was terribly sceptical about the entire event!

The positives :-) KCL gave us a box of rather yummy Pineapple Tarts which she purchased from one of the stalls. And NS told me that she enjoyed watching the Malaysian dancers in their traditional clothes. Phew!

Decent food ... good juices ... Nice childrens' meals ... but best thing is the dedicated play area and sitting area for parents in a quiet corner of the restaurant ... Bravo!

Koong Woh Tong - We like the herbal jelly here!

Koong Woh Tong serves herbal teas and a very delicious gwai-lin goh or herbal jelly. It is located opposite Jusco in AEON Bukit Tinggi mall, Klang.

Previous visits: 3 years ago

A small bowl is about RM$6, but we chose the RM$11 "large" to share :-) Its served with some delicious honey in a teapot, which I added plenty of!

ps - You can have either the hot (my fave) or cold variety.
