What's in my bag? I've been tagged by Lianne!

I've been tagged by my friend in Germany, Lianne!

Here are the rules.
Find a safe quiet place free of significant others, nosey meme makers, priests, nuns, all things religious and men in general. (If you're a guy just reverse this process to male and tell us about your wallet, tool box, briefcase or metro sexual accessory.)
1. Dump the contents of your handbag in a pile
2. Take a photo of your handbag and the contents
3. Be brave and explain to your fellow bloggers what lurks inside the handbag.
4. Tag others who might want to embarrass themselves
5. Answer these questions:
Describe the contents of your handbag.
What's the most important thing in your handbag?
What's the most embarrassing thing in your handbag?
What's the smallest thing in your handbag?
Is there anything illegal in your handbag?

As I described in Lianne's blog, I don't carry a hand-bag ... unless I am travelling abroad! So here's my "travel bag"!

What's the most important thing in your handbag? Gotta be the plastic (credit cards) and moolah (cash! cash! in various currencies ... Sterling, Greenback, Thai-baht, HKD, and Ringgit even!).
What's the smallest thing in your handbag? Gotta be my trusty thumb-drive!

Second most important ... My berry and Nokia!

What's the most embarrassing thing in your handbag? Hmm ... come on now, who put this in my bag! I know it was a gift from someone ... haha!

My camera ... My daily "ride" is a Canon G9, but I have started giving my Nikon D80 (with the very flexible and excellent quality Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8) a work-out as well! Yes, it fits into my "travel bag", I kid you not!

What's the smallest thing in your handbag? Hmm ... or perhaps it is the golf tees I seem to find in each and every bag and wallet I have, as well as all my shorts pockets! I also seem to collect a lot of golf score-card pencils!

Is there anything illegal in your handbag? Not today!

Who shall I tag?
Cumi and Ciki
Masak Masak
and, The original Chocoholic

Thanks for tagging back!

Amazing Race Asia 3 - Episode 3 (Vietnam)

This is the 3rd episode of the Amazing Race Asia 3. It was originally aired on AXN in Malaysia, at 09:00pm - 10:00pm on 25th September 2008, but I missed it ... and finally caught the repeat earlier this morning, 12:15am - 1:15am (1st October 2008). Phew!

This leg was based in Hue, which is the capital city of the Thiên - Hu province, in Vietnam. Seems that between the years of 1802 and 1945, it was actually the imperial capital of the Nguy Dynasty and is well known for its ancient architecture. Located along the banks of a river, in central Vietnam, it is 700 km south of the Hanoi.

Ah ... my eye-candy from the Philippines is still in the race .. Tisha Silang with her moaning, complaining and foul-tempered boy-boy Geoff Rodriguez.

I liked this challenge best ... but was surprised with the producers' little consideration for road traffic dangers! I am sure many Malaysians like myself, are rooting for Bernie and Henry!

The two Malaysian teams did really well in this leg ...

Other challenges...
Roadblock - one team member had to retrieve seven coins representing the seven emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty in Vietnam at the tomb of Minh Ming, bring them back to Khai Dinh Tomb and put the coins in the correct order of the reign of the emperors.
Detour - Choice between Sticks and Stalks. In Sticks, teams must make ten incense sticks using the demonstrated method. In Stalks, teams must whack rice stalks to fill two platters of unhusked rice.
Additional Tasks
- In the Caltex service facility, teams must pick a marked jeep to change the tire and engine oil.
- At Quoc Hoc Park, teams must search a marked cyclo for their next clue.

Wikipedia.. Hue is best known for its historic monuments, which have earned it a place in the UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. The seat of the Nguyen emperors was in the Citadel, which occupies a large, walled area on the north side of the river. Inside the citadel was a forbidden city where only the concubines, emperors, and those close enough to them were granted access, the punishment for trespassing being death. Today, little of the forbidden city remains, though reconstruction efforts are in progress to maintain it as a tourist attraction as a view of the history of Hue. This was the site of this leg's finale!

Victorious!

It's time to say goodbye to the beauty queens ... Pailin & Natalie. I am sure Natalie (Miss Universe 2005) is looking forward to going home to her Thai tennis superstar hubby, Paradorn Srichaphan!

Spotted in Bangsar ... what a fabulous car registration! BAG5 looks like ... BAGS!

Dragon-i at Centrepoint, Bandar Utama

I usually enjoy going to the Dragon-i at Lot S313A, New Wing of 1 Utama Shopping Centre (Tel: +603 7725 8822), but decided to give the one at Bandar Utama's Centrepoint a-go one lunchtime. I made a good choice!

Add: G115, Ground Floor, Centrepoint Bandar Utama, 3 Lebuh Bandar Utama, PJ
Tel: +603 7728 6866

Lovely simple but tasteful decor, with lots of blacks, reds and ... uh ... dragons!
ps - Beware! If you want the menu, it will cost you RM$500. Check out the inside front cover, hah!

My choice ... Plain la mien (RM$8), nice! And, the delicious and tangy signature spare ribs (RM$22).

W had the La Mien and Pork Ribs combo, RM$16. He seemed to enjoy it, whalloped it all down!

B is always predictable and chose the Fried La Mien, which he enjoyed to the last drop! RM$14.

ps - 3 persons, RM$80 for lunch, not the cheapest, but at least the food here is always consistent!

Impul 112S - Nissan Micra or March with Goal Post!

Hmm, what a odd little car ... I know this as a Nissan Micra, or March, but here it is known as an Impul 112S!

La Bodega Lounge, Jalan Telawi @ Bangsar - Brilliant service!

Add: 1st Floor, 18 Jalan Telawi 2, Bangsar Baru, KL

Interesting and apt description on ExpatKL ... "La Bodega Lounge could pass off as someone's living room, albiet with bottomless supllies of wine, champangne, cocktails, Cuban cigars and tapas, plus and obliging wait staff."

Gin and Tonic - Not any gin, but lovely smooth Tanqueray. Fabulous!

And ... Deep Purple. A RM$20 concoction of Skyy blue vodka, Ribena, Cranberry, and Blueberry fruit. Hmm ... not really my thing!

ps - Ask for Jas/Jaz, the resident manager, his customer service skills are legendary!

Tang House of Fishball, PJ

Pork-free? Want a healthy-ish meal, and in a hurry? Look no further then ... Tang House of Fishball.

Simple fish-ball soup, and crunchy noodles served with some minced chicken and onion oil. Check out those large pieces of fish-cakes.

What confuses me about this place ... It goes by so many different names!
Tang House of Fishball, Damansara Utama
Teow Chew 60s Fishball, Seapark PJ
Hainanese Taste Tien Pin Mee Pok, SS2 PJ

Mamak time post drinking - Mosin @ TTDI

Add: No 109, Jalan Aminuddin Bakj, TTDI @ Taman Tun Dr Ismail, KL

Ah ... me and the lads headed out to TTDI one night, uh... early one morning, for some maggi mee goreng and Nasi Kandar (Ayam madu ... pretty decent) doused in various gravy's. Good stuff! Thanks for the treat DL :-)

Ps - Review of previous visit to Mosin

Hing Loong Taiwanese Noodle House, Damansara Uptown

Add: Hing Loong Taiwanese Noodle House @ 87, Jalan SS 21/37, Damansara Utama, PJ
Tel: +603 7710 8334
Opening hours: 9:30 am - 6 pm

The "starter" we ordered ... some preserved veges, which would have been decent if not for the copious amounts of chopped garlic bits sprinkled over the top. Eeeww... nasty garlic-y aftertaste!

Taiwanese sausage - Sigh, bland bland bland!

Szechuan Style Spicy Beef Noodle Soup (RM$5.90) - The pan-mee-esque noodles (sort of like mee-pok found in Singapore) were decent, but somehow the broth lacked "ooomph". Better with the sambal, but still ... not quite there!

Deep fried Pork chop (RM$3.50) - Average. Nothing to shout about!

Dry Dumplings / Sui Kao (RM$4.90) - Taiwanese dumplings, the skin was just too thick.

The verdict ... Sigh, overall, not a good experience (Bill came up to RM$23.60) at this restaurant!

The Love Guru (2008) - Mike Myers, Jessica Alba

Source: DVD (Kota Damansara)

Excellent casting with ...
Mike Myers - Guru Pitka / Young Pitka / Teenage Pitka / Himself
Jessica Alba - Jane Bullard, owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs
Justin Timberlake - Jacques Grande
Verne Troyer ... Coach Punch Cherkov (Yes, it's Austin Powers nemesis Mini Me)
Ben Kingsley ... Guru Tugginmypudha and,
Rajneesh or the Guru's sidekick is played by Manu Narayan

One of those films which you will either LOVE or despise ... I am with the LOVE clan! Haha.. Check out the diverse set of storylines in this Mike "Saturday Night Live / Waynes World" Myers film...
1) Darren Roanoke (played by Romany Malco) has issues with his mother, but is required by his Toronto Maple Leafs team to win the Stanley Cup
2) Darren's wife, Prudence Roanoke (played vy Meagan Good) left him for Justin Timberlake's Jacques "Le Coq" Grandé. Check out his ... member!
3) Jane Bullard (Jessica Alba) gets the support of the Guru Maurice Pitka (Mike Myers) to help Darren with his pyscho-issues, hmm.. will they fall in love?
4) Will Guru Pitka be invited to appear on Oprah Winfrey's show?
5) Will Guru Pitka become The Guru, with #1 place currently held by Deepak Chopra.
6) Guru Pitka has a chastity belt put on by Guru Tugginmypudha (Haha, it's Ben Kingsley!!), how will this be removed?

Yes, look closely, it's Justin Timberlake!

ps. I loved the soundtrack as well ... Here are just a few of the memorable songs:-
Brimful of Asha (Norman Cook mix) - Cornershop
More Than Words - Extreme (Mike Myers and Manu Narayan does a cover of this)
C'est La Vie - Robbie Nevil
I Drove All Night - Celine Dion (singing Heart's iconic song)

Coco-dog crop and short hair-cut

Hmm, wonder if Cocodog likes her new short-hair cut!

Her coat is EVEN more silky smooth now ... Thanks to Adrian at Ikano :-)

Seri Selangor Golf - Not such a good score this time!

Add: Kelab Golf Seri Selangor @ Persiaran Damansara Indah, Off Persiaran Tropicana, PJ
Tel: +603 7806 1111

Not every day's a Sunday, even though today IS Sunday! Played much better on my previous round here at Seri Selangor.

New and old friends ... sharing the love for golf! The Sunday afternoon round cost us RM$100 each, inclusive of buggy.

BEWARE! Trouble everywhere ... We struggled out of the semi-rough and rough all day, and with the muggy weather prevalent, it was not an easy round, both mentally and physically!

The big guns!

Still smiling :-)

C'mon, get in the hole!

Here are a couple more shots at the end of our round, which finished at 06:45pm (We started at about 02:00pm). All in all, I wasn't pleased with my performance, especially on the back 9 (Which happened to be the easier 9 holes, Hole 1-9), shooting 51 + 54, for a paltry total of 105.

Money No Enough (1998) - 10th Anniversary Edition

Source: Speedy Video - Original DVD @ RM$19.99

Hard to believe this film was from way back in ... 1998, this has just been re-released as it is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and the sequel (Money No Enough II) was released recently too. Simply one of the best films ever produced in Singapore, excellent acting, great Hokkien one-liners, and the references made about life in Singapore is just spot-on!

Director: Tay Teck-Lock
Producer: JP Tan, Hsiao Yu-Hua
Writer: Jack Neo
Cast: Jack Neo, Mark Lee, Henry Thia, John Cheng, Patricia Mok

Described as "A local hit that focuses on the financial problems of three pals looking to get ahead in a crazy, money-obsessed culture. Although a bit amateurish and heavy-handed at times, Money No Enough works as an effective satire of certain aspects of Singaporean culture during the late 90s."

Did you know?
Money No Enough was released in cinemas on 7 May 1998 in the wake of the Asian financial crisis, Money No Enough earned over S$5.8 million and remains Singapore's all-time highest-grossing film. The Singaporean film industry experienced a revival following the success of the film, and it spawned two "copycats"(1999's "Where Got Problem" and "Lucky Number"). And, following the success of Money No Enough, the fledging Singaporean film industry experienced a revival, with a record number of local productions in 1999.

ps - One of my favourite scenes in the show is when Ah Hui proudly shows off his Motorola DynaTAC 8000X! This was the first mobile phone to receive FCC acceptance in 1983! And .. DynaTAC was actually an abbreviation of Dynamic Adaptive Total Area Coverage. Yes, the original "water bottle" or "brick"!

Exquisite La La at Restoran Boston Baru, Jalan Kapar - Klang

Which restaurant is worth fighting this type of traffic through Klang town? With the major upgrading work at the end of the Klang bridge, this type of traffic is common throughout the daytime hours in Klang.

Add: Jalan Kapar, Klang
Located: Along the same road as Kamdar, look out for Kolej ALC and 7-11. Boston Baru is directly opposite these landmarks. Best Optical is located alongside, and the restaurant happens to be om the same row as Lembaga Tabung Haji.
Opening hours: 7pm, or whenever the owner wants to open!

Kangkung Sotong (RM$9) - This little stall is located just outside Boston Baru, and it is surprisingly good. The sauce is excellent.

The signature dish ... the masterpiece.
This is La La cooked in white wine, with plenty of ginger and a sprinkle of lethal chilli padi. Exquisite!! The soup with the garlic bits, is simply heavenly.

Ham Yue Fah Lam Poh - Belly pork cooked in a claypot, with dried chilli padi. Excellent flavour!

Pek Kueh, tapioca slices - Stir fried hokkien style. This again is one of their most popular dishes.
UPDATE! Thanks to Lim for pointing out ... this may be called "chee hun kern"

Chow Kiat Bak Kut Teh, Jalan Kapar - Klang

Whilst waiting for Boston Baru to open, me and my colleague decided to try the Bak Kut Teh opposite the road :-) We chose a bowl of pai kuat , and a bowl of pun fei sau (half fat, half thin).

The BKT was actually rather good, it was of the very-herbal variety, and wasn't overly thick in texture.

Washed down with a pot of Ti Guan Yin tea ...

The bill was nearly RM$25, ouch, that's expensive, for 2 rather small bowls of meat and BKT soup!

Coco has just been groomed at Ikano

The "new" Coco!

Coco has had a crew cut!!

Wonderful chinese dinner at Tang Palace, Dynasty Hotel KL

Great way to start ... The Four Seasons dish was delicately presented, and tasted so good!

Roast Pig ... Slurp!

Good vege dishes ...

Ku Loh Yoke or Sweet and Sour Pork ... Delicious. Ordered TWO portions!

My favourite dish ... The signature lamb. Exquisite!

The crabs cooked in two styles, were really good, and it was all ... whalloped!

Here's how you dip your man-tou, there were even 2 varieties (One steamed, one deep fried).

Tasty noodles to end off the evening ... Happy Birthday, Jo!

Afterhour, Solaris - Night out with the boys

Oh oh ... it's The Master!

Concentration ...

Striking in green :-)

ps - Previous visit to one of our favourite pool joints ... This is, Afterhour at Solaris

Waikiki Too, TTDI Plaza @ Taman Tun Dr Ismail

This is ... TTDI Plaza. It houses some really popular pubs and clubs, including Waikiki Too, Fidels, Bambo9, and more!

Add: Jalan Wan Kadir 3 , Taman Tun Dr Ismail, KL

The band at Waikiki Too ... Excellent! With the "beach like" atmosphere, and cool tunes (Check out their rendition of CALIFORNIA DREAMIN' by Mamas and Papas), and pleasant staff, this is a great place to be.

A good round of golf at Seri Selangor

Add: Kelab Golf Seri Selangor @ Persiaran Damansara Indah, Off Persiaran Tropicana, PJ
Tel: +603 7806 1111

This is not an easy course, but by no means is it unreasonable ... Presents a fair challenge for all who tee off here! Played off the Blue tees for the first time whilst my playing partner W challenged the BLACKS, and Hi played so well off the reds!

So impressive ... Hi!

Check this out ... Hi's gear. Nice eh!

My old Clevelands and brand new (thanks, you guys know who you are!) Titleist Vokey 60-degree lob wedge. I love wedges!

W and me :-)

So smooth ... check out that shoulder turn and balance!

Putt of the day ... yes, Hi sank this!

Graceful power!

Oh oh ... some trouble!

Majestic!

No problems for W ...

ps - Had a great round (Despite not parring a single hole!), front 9 was a rather poor 53, but came back strong in the back 9 to shoot a 46. My best round at Seri Selangor (so far) ... 99. Well chuffed!

Titleist Scotty Cameron - Newport 1.5 and Futura Phantom

What's in the bag ...

Hmm, what's under that cover?

35" shaft.

Much loved and much appreciated on the tour ... One of my playing partner's weapon of choice.

Exquisite build-quality.

Ah ... the rather rare Scotty Cameron Futura Phantom. More photos to follow in the future...

Hainanese Chicken Chop @ Decanter Too, Sri Hartamas

It seems Decanter is operated by the same people who run the really fine Courtyard Garden at Damansara Heights, near Jarrod&Rawlins. There are four branches, check out the map below.

Add: 15 Prisma Ville Business Centre, Jalan 19/70A, Sri Hartamas, KL
Tel: +603 6203 5448
Opening hours (How complex is this! Ha!):
Mon-Thurs (12pm-3pm, 5:30pm-1am), Fri (12pm-3pm, 5:30pm-2am),
Sat (5pm-2am), Sun closed

The good
Excellent hainanese chicken chop (About RM$16-$17), so tasty and lovely with the french fries which were crinkle cut and doused in the delicious tomato-based gravy. Pity the carrots weren't boiled long enough, and were rather hard.

And ... the ugly
The fish and chips was poor, the first piece of fish that was served had flesh which was "yellowish", and smelt a little odd. I promptly returned it ... and voila, the next piece was ... well, better. But still rather flat.

Chen Ho Ho Seafood Steamboat, Bukit Tinggi in Klang

Chen Ho Ho is located in... Bukit Tinggi, Klang.

This is a portion for 3 persons - RM$12.50 per person.

Steamboat or "Tah Pin Loh" is basically a cauldron of boiling soup (In the past, only clear ikan-bilis or anchovies based soup was used, now you can get all variants of soup including the ever-popular Tom Yam) which you dip your raw meats and veges in :-) A wholesome interactive meal for friends and family!

Delicious fried tung fun, at RM$6.

ps - Tea came up to be RM$3 in total, very reasonable. Overall, a good meal!

Nice airey simple layout ... Just the place to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon! We arrived at 1pm, and didn't leave till about 4pm!

RM$80 for the Wine and BBQ buffet ... loved the chicken, beef and dory fish. There's also lamb chops and other seafoods.

Pick and mix your own Caesars Salad to start before you hit the meats :-)
Mmmh, hot off the grill ...

My choice was the very smooth and easy drinking Italian white, but you can also have the Chilean ... or Red too if you wish. Went so well with the food!

Coffee, or in this case cappucino, is included in the meal as well ... And the bread and butter pudding was yummy too!

Exceptionally good service :-) Here's Malik the Manager and Chef Virginia, bravo!

Canon EOS 40D and EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM

E's Canon 40D with his lens of choice ... The excellent Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM

Really nice set-up ...

If I remember correctly, that lens in the background is a Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM Macro.

ps - I first saw his new toy at the Mataking Dive trip .

Central Park, Bandar Botanic Klang - Nikon D80 and Tamron 17-50mm

Woke up early one morning, drove to Klang and took my Nikon D80 mounted with a Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F/2.8 lens for a work-out!

Central Park is a large park located in the heart of Gamuda's Bandar Botanic development, off the Kesas highway in Klang. Its centrepiece is a a 7km circumference lake, which was introduced to me by some Klang-mates.

32mm zoom (So much more versatile then a prime / macro lens) ... f/3.2 at 1/500s

Correction! Seems this is NOT the Bunga Raya... unfortunately I don't have an eye for flower names (but there is no need to leave rude comments, so that has been deleted).

Took the silhouette shot, at F/20 , 1/2000s.

Still learning how to capture shadows more naturally ...

More flowers ...

I like these flowers!

Malaysian Today - Tea for Two, Bangsar

As featured in the local paper, MALAYSIAN TODAY.

This is my third write-up, it's titled "Tempting Treats at T42", which features Tea for Two located at Jalan Bangkung, Bangsar.

Tea For Two, Jalan Bangkung @ Bangsar

As featured on Malaysian Today, 18th September 2008!

Nice layout and al-fresco garden area at Tea for Two, located along Bukit Bandaraya off Bangsar. I had driven past this establishment many a time, as well as frequenting neighbouring eateries such as ... U serving Japanese , Opus serving Italian , and Cava serving tapas .

Add: 57 Jalan Bangkung, Off Jalan Maarof, Bukit Bandaraya, Bangsar, KL

No charge for 2 simple but warm slices of Garlic Bread ... followed by a Cobb Salad (RM$21.90) that was large enough to be shared by two.

Always the sign of a good restaurant
... when a restaurant can customise a dish for the client. We chose the cod to replace the salmon, over a nice bed of salad which included avocado and rocket. The cod just melted in my mouth, bravo! RM$49.90.

Tarragon Chicken (RM$28.90) - This was recommended by the staff at the restaurant, seems it is one of their signature dishes. Heavily infused with tarragon, a lovely herb, and served in a cream sauce that bordered on being too salty. Was surprised that the potatoes were not consistent, some of the roasted potatoes were nice and tender whilst others seemed like they hadn't been boiled long enough. Nevertheless, a decent dish.

Ice Cream and Banana pudding (RM$12.80) - Lovely end to the meal, delicious!

Eau Claire water at RM$2 a bottle was reasonably priced, and the total charge of RM$142 was slightly on the pricey side (The Cod skewed the total!) but you do get friendly service, a nice relaxed ambience with not many other diners, and decent food.

Honda Civic 1.8S - Malaysia

The Honda Civic 1.8S is a common sight in Malaysia, but I still think it looks real good for a "stock" car, reliable, comfy and sophisticated interior which is also well-built, has a nice ride, decent pricing, and demonstrates great re-sale values ... This must be a Honda!

Restrained and practical, but confident styling on both the front and rear ...

Indomie Mi Goreng - Mi Segera Perisa Asli

IndoMie's Mi Goreng "Perisa Asli" - Possibly the finest instant noodles, but it's a close one compared to Maggi Mee. Always brings back memories of days in boarding school ...

There's no longer a sachet of crispy fried onions/shallots, but it's still good nevertheless ... Boil for 3-5 minutes depending on how crunchy or soft you want it to be. I like it "al dente", with a semi-cooked egg over the top.

VOILA! Five minutes later ...

Peng Heong Hakka Pai Kut - Assam fish, pork balls, choy keok in Klang

Add: 2, Lorong Gudang Nanas, off Jalan Pasar, Klang
Tel: +6019 2600 855

I have started coming to this rags to riches eatery rather regularly! Another trip to Klang, this time with my golf kaki, just to enjoy the "pai kut" here.

Yes, between the 2 of us, we ordered THREE pieces of pai kut. How greedy! First piece was "standard" fare with the gravy, but had the next 2 sans gravy. Good as well!
Tip! Must eat with the yummy chilli sauce, and some black sauce as well.

Aunty at the shop recommended the fried pork balls ... Very good!

Assam fish - A little too boney, but still good.

Choy keok - Sour veges in a Claypot. I like this!

ps - Total bill was RM$40 , ouch ... but we did have 1 soya bean, and 2 barleys on top of all the food above ... YUMMY!

Nokia 6300 - Flip case

Hmm, what do we have here?

Yes, it's the very popular Nokia 6300 in a handy and trendy flip case!

Meal at home with a Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F/2.8

My latest addition, a Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F/2.8 is a genuinely flexible lens, here are some shots of dinner at home with lighting from the trusty Nikon SB-600 mounted on a Nikon D80.

Wide zoom - 17mm

At approx 45mm focal length ...

Same as before, slightly closer at 46mm at F/2.8

Ole Ole Bali, SohoKL at Solaris Mont Kiara

Add: J-0G-15 and 16, SohoKL, Solaris Mont Kiara, 2 Jalan Solaris, KL

R and A had recommended this place, due to the good food, nice ambience and reasonable prices. So we ended up here at Solaris to celebrate A's birthday :-)

Nice al-fresco layout, with a garden feel due to the parasols, but can get rather hot and humid, despite the floor-standing aircon units.

Cucumber (RM$11) - The gang seemed to like it, had 4 between us!

Lemongrass Tea (RM$6) - Looked "the part" but tasted so .. uh .. unspectacular.

J's Nasi Campur (RM$33).

Ole Ole Trio (RM$38) - Large mixed platter, very delicious lemongrass chicken skewers.

My choice ... and a delicious one it was too, RM$25 - Nasi BBQ Chicken. Two very tender and tasty chicken pieces, large portions!

Ribeye Steak (RM$33) - Not much to shout about according to A.

Other dishes consumed, but (shudder) I didn't take piccies of ...
Sup Buntut (RM$14),
Soto Ayam (RM$11),
Nasi campur Chicken (RM$33), and
Nasi Seafood (RM$31).

Overall, a good place, but I would recommend sitting inside next time, and the service could be improved, as some of the dishes came really quick (in minutes), whilst others took up to 20+ minutes.

Afterhour, Solaris - Where shooting pool will never be the same

Add: SohoKL (which stands for Solaris Hotspotz) at Solaris, Mont Kiara

Some of the best pool tables in town ...

It was time for happy hour, and not sure why my boys had Heines with Ice. Hmm, just like in Thailand!

ps - Finally found a map to Solaris ... So far, we have checked out Raw, Afterhour, Goddezz, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

pps - Here's what we had...
Heineken bottle (RM$18),
Guiness draught - Pint / Happy Hour (RM$20 - The guiness here is really good!),
Tiger - Mug / Happy Hour (RM$10.86).

Happy Birthday, A!

Happy Birthday, Miss A :-)

How does one tell a good Kon Loh Mee from a great one?

My dissection of one of my favourite foods, Kon Loh Mee!

1) The noodles - Crinkly and firm, but not too hard. Must never be soggy!
2) The sauce - Just enough sweetness, but not over the top ... a delicate balance
3) The char siew - Not too much "red" colouring, and has just enough 'roasted' taste.
4) The wan tan - Delicate skin, but don't expect "gourmet tim sum" quality, be practical, this is a simple dish!
5) Finally - The acid test ... If you ta-pow it home, such as what I did below, and it is still good, it can be classified as REALLY GOOD!

This ... is a really good kon loh mee aka wan tan mee. SLURRRRPilicious!

Please click here for details of location and my previous reviews of Indiana Kon Loh Mee, along Persiaran Raja Muda Musa, Klang (Not far from La Salle Klang).

Amazing Race Asia 3 - Episode 2 (Vietnam)

This is the 2nd episode of the Amazing Race Asia 3. It was aired on AXN in Malaysia, at 09:00pm - 10:30pm on 18th September 2008, and I am so hooked ...

The race started at the Mae Khong Pong (Flight of the Gibbon) near Chiang Mai, Thailand, and was soon followed by a paintball challenge at the Banana Plantation. The teams then had to travel to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam where they went to the Saigon Opera House and played a Nokia N92 challenge at the Saigon Pho Cafe.

Always eye-candy ... Philippines' Tisha Silang, who struggled with a rather energetic, hot and gruelling episode, with Geoff Rodriguez.

The Beauty Queens, Pailin & Natalie. Did you know ... Natalie (Miss Universe 2005) is married to Thai tennis superstar, Paradorn Srichaphan? They provided the drama in this 2nd episode, with a breakdown ... "I can't sleep like this ... blah blah ... I am dirty ... blah blah ... moan moan!"

Mediocre once again, the "second" Malaysian pair of ... Ida Nerina & Tania Khan (who are an Actress & Heiress respectively).

The second episode concluded at the Museum of Vietnamese history, but not before they had to complete a Singha beer sponsored task (USD$500) to do a charitable task with a group of their choice. This occured at the Thang Nanh Jeanne D'Arc Vang Nan Church, where the teams bought supplies as well as donated them to various organisations.

Victorious ... Malaysia Boleh! Henry and Bernie Chan.
The prize? Free fuel from Caltex for a year, wow!

Last by quite a mile ... Korean bros, William and Isaac Hong.

Steamed Chiong Ching Fish at Home

Always delicious! Omellete with shrimps, Stir fried lettuce, and Fu Yue Chicken

And here's the spicy masterpiece ... Chiong Ching Fish (Steamed fish with minced beans and chilli).

Shanghai Surprise night ... with prizes by Air Asia.

Champers is always welcome!

On the decks ...
"Human (1986)" by the Human League,
Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (1987)",
"Don't You Forget About Me" (Simple Minds @ 1985 - Definitely one of the defining songs of the 80s!),
Guns and Roses and "Sweet Child O' Mine (1988)",
Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit (1991)",
Level 42's very memorable "Something About You (1985)",
Spice Girls and the catchy "Wannabe (1996)" - Some say this is one of the most recognisable songs of the 90s!, and ...
New Radicals with "You Get What You Give (1998)". Brilliant!

Mambo is certainly the best, been there done that!

Peng Heong Hakka Pai Kut, Lorong Gudang Nanas Klang

Drove to Klang again, much easier to find :-) this place 2nd time round!
There's a review here, and a simple map to get there too!

Add: 2, Lorong Gudang Nanas, off Jalan Pasar, Klang
Tel: +6019 2600 855

The legendary pai kut ... tender, juicy, delicious!

Thanks to mum for the tip, the Assam Fish was delicious too. Didn't think much of the stir fried poh-lay-sang-choy.

Soya-bean can be purchased individually, or in a large family sized bottle.

Best of all .. the bill. Total for the 2 of us, RM$19. Good value!

ps - I like this place so much, it's my 2nd visit in 4 days!

Audi A6 2.0TFSI S-Line, Singapore

Spotted a Singapore registered A6, one of the world's most handsome cars I reckon. 2.0TFSI retails at SGD$168K, but expect to pay a little more for the S-line edition. I reckon 10%-15% more?

I really like the subtle bodykit, and the colour... and espesh the rims!
This is described by Audi as a "S line packages from quattro GmbH". It goes on to describe ... These will enhance the powerful looks of your Audi and produce an even sportier driving feel. Packages include sports suspension, alloy wheels, dynamic exterior features, sporty equipment and trim for the interior with sports seats and plenty more besides.

audi.com.sg explains the cool design language...

Single-frame grille
A key style feature is the prominent, trapezoidal single-frame grille. Its appearance is complemented by the V-bonnet line, emphasising the power that lies beneath the metal.

Rear spoiler lip
The bold shoulder line of the body underlines the A6 Saloon’s sporting attitude. Extending back as far as the clearly defined rear spoiler lip, it gives the A6 Saloon a powerful profile.

Steering wheel design
A new steering wheel with a 4-spoke or 3-spoke design makes its debut in the A6 Saloon, emblazoned with Audi’s distinctive four-ring emblem.

Coupé-style roof
The coupé-style roof is based on the classic proportions of an Audi sports saloon. The roofline’s arc tapers down towards the tail, yet inside there’s plenty of room for five adults to travel in comfort.

BMW Motorad spotted

A reasonably new and smart looking bike ... the BMW Motorad.

Chicken Rice, Restoran Southern Park

Restoran Southern Park is located at the corner of Taman Selatan or Southern Park, in Klang. Chicken rice was so bland ... rather poor. RM$4.

How not to turn right at a traffic light

As seen near Southern Park, Klang ... oh my, check out the Proton Waja on the right! The motorcyclist was so kind to attempt to explain to the driver, that he was on the wrong lane!

1 Six, Desa Sri Hartamas near Souled Out

Our pseudo pub crawl ... ended at 1 Six, near the rear of Souled Out.

Add: 22-1 Jalan 24/70A, Desa Sri Hartamas, KL
What it is ... Chinese karaoke place, serving Carlsberg draught. Hic!

Afterhours, SohoKL Solaris near Mont Kiara

Check out Afterhours at SohoKL, Solaris, it's a great pool place :-)

The second "aqua vitae" of the night ... Guinness draught. Slurp!

The pool tables here are really professional, made everyone feel that they could actually play!

Thanks to DJ for the surprise visit, and for showing us how it's done!

Blackhole and Bomba Station, Desa Sri Hartamas

Blackhole had a Macallan 12 promo, reasonably priced at RM$330 ++

Add: 22 Jalan 25/70A, Desa Sri Hartamas, KL
Occassion: Happy Hour on day before Nuzul Quran, a public holiday in the state of Selangor, I had originally thought it was going to be a Guiness night (It would turn out to be so later!), but couldn't resist a bottle of Mac...

Dinner time!
Singapore Fried Beehoon - RM$14.80 (Rather average)
Fried sambal sausage - RM$9.80 (Thought that the peanuts were a strange touch!)

The highlight ... Pizza Hawaiian (RM$21.80), cheesy, tasty and perfect with the Mac!

Here's the bomba / fire station opposite, at 08:00am and 08:00pm each day (we were there at the latter obviously), they do a full test of the systems on these fire engines ... Peee pooohhh pppeeee ppoooohhh you get the drill! We were well amused ...

Taman Tun Dr Ismail Wet Market - Ramadan Month

I love visiting food-shopping places during the Ramadan month, you get so many shoppers buying food stuff to prepare for their loved ones' Breaking Fast / Buka Puasa dinners. Just gives me a nice warm fuzzy feeling! Here's yesterday's visit to the Taman Tun Dr Ismail market.

Add: Jln Tun Mohd Fuad, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Pasar Moden, KL
Opening hours: 5am - 8pm

It's a really clean and well organised market, more akin to markets I had been to in Manchester, UK rather then here in Malaysia.

And on to the non-halal section! It's located in the lower floor / basement, adjacent to the covered parking lots. Even this section doesn't stink and is reasonably clean! Lee Wah Trading Co. is a huge pork butcher, selling every conceivable part of the pig. They obviously get very busy as there is a row of seats opposite them, in case there's a queue!

This is John, always ready to humour me, and he speaks great English too. He works alongside his bros' Michael and the "hunky" Cougar. Seems they usually sell-out before 12pm, so get there quick for the best cuts!

Check out the knifesmanship ... first he cleans the chopping block (Which in his case only lasts 3 months!), then the pork gets the knife treatment!

My first attempt at moon photography, shot with a Nikkor DX 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 VR Zoom Lens.

Moon was shy tonight ... but still popped up now and then!

ps - Happy Mid Autumn Festival week again! :-)

AF-S Zoom Nikkor DX 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 VR Lens on a Nikon D80

AF-S DX VR Zoom-NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED notes below are taken from Nikon.com

This 3.6x zoom, designed exclusively for use with Nikon’s DX-format, features Nikon’s VR image stabilization and is perfect for portraits and action.

Purchased about a year ago in Singapore ... costs about RM$1K. Best value medium-long zoom, not your typical bomb-proof Nikkor construction, but at this price, the performance is nothing short of excellent. It does feel "plastic" though.

Versatile and compact 3.6x Zoom-NIKKOR brings the action to the photographer.
Ideal for portraiture, family, sports, nature and wildlife. Nikon's VR (Vibration Reduction) reduces the effects of camera shake, allowing hand-held shooting at up to 3 shutter speeds slower than would be possible for dramatically sharper images.
An ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element minimizes chromatic aberration, contributing to superior optical performance.
New compact rod-type Silent Wave Motor (SW) enables ultra-high speed auto focusing with exceptional accuracy and super-quiet operation.
Focus mode switch enables quick switching between A (Autofocus) and M (Manual Focus).
The lens is constructed with 15 elements in 11 groups.
7-blade rounded diaphragm provides more natural out-of-focus highlights

Mid Autumn Festival dinner at home

UPDATED! Heh heh, sorry for the wrong "season" ... Thanks to all who reminded me!

Happy Mid Autumn Festival :-) Steamed kampung chicken ... and Yanna fried chicken!

Two vege dishes ...

Looks like a chong-yue (Bawal or Pomfret), but it ain't ... that's RM$30/kilo, this fish is more like RM$80. Very meaty, very nice!

Yummmmmmy ... Goreng Pisang home-made!

Squeezed with loving care ... no wonder its so sweet! Orange Juice ala Home!

Coco wishes everyone Happy Mid Autumn Festival!

Updated! Thanks again to all who reminded me that it is Autumn .. not Summer, silly :-)

Happy Mid Autumn Festival ... Moon Cake Evening, everyone :-)

Yawwwnn... Coco's sleepy!

Yashica J - 1961 Rangefinder Manual Camera

Camerapedia.org
The Yashica J is a 1961 rangefinder camera. It has a high quality lens and a rather limited set of shutterspeeds. At the time of release, it was probably considered a budget model, since the better equipped Yashica Lynx 1000 and Yashica Minister series were being marketed at approximately the same time.

Look what I found! A blast back in memory lane ... The build quality is simply remarkable for a reasonably cheap camera, even in its day. Yes, this is from the 1960s!

Ah... simplicity!

Still feels good in the hand, and probably looks better then many of the modern button-covered plastic behemouths!

This fella is probably the REAL treasure in dad's drybox, more so even then the Nikon D80. It brings back many memories of the 1960s I am sure ... Nuff said.

Two sets of framelines are visible in the viewfinder, one set for infinity focus and the other one for closer focus. There's no automatic parallax correction as on the later Yashica Electro 35 series.
The rangefinder is coupled to the focusing ring. This ring has a small lever to make focusing more comfortable. The lens is a fixed 45mm F/2.8 Yashinon with apertures from 2.8 to 16. The minimal focusing distance is 1 meter.
There a framecounter around the advance lever, counting up from 1 to 36. On the back a small screw permits adjustment of the rangefinder without opening the body. The Yashica J has a rewind crank which will not open the back door; opening the camera is achieved by moving and depressing a small button on the bottom plate.

Contax T2 - It's a compact film camera!

Contax was a camera brand noted for its unique, and sometimes odd, technical innovation and a wide range of Zeiss lenses, noted for their high optical quality. Its latest incarnation was a line of 35 mm, medium format and digital cameras engineered and manufactured by Kyocera, featuring modern optics engineered by Carl Zeiss, which has an outstanding reputation for high quality photographic equipment. On April 12, 2005, Kyocera announced that they would no longer produce Contax cameras.

Contax T-series Compact Cameras Kyocera introduced a series of highly successful T-series compact cameras, offering Zeiss-designed lenses which appealled to photographers desiring above-average picture quality.
Contax T2, a titanium body autofocus compact camera, featured a retracting 5-element Sonnar 38/2.8 lens, made in silver titanium, in black and gold plated finish.

More views of this collectable that I found in my dad's dry-box!

Yes, FILM!

The T2 featured ... Active autofocus
Active AF systems measure distance to the subject independently of the optical system, and subsequently adjust the optical system for correct focus. There are various ways to measure distance, including ultrasonic sound waves and infrared light. In the first case, sound waves are emitted from the camera, and by measuring the delay in their reflection, distance to the subject is calculated. Polaroid cameras including the Spectra and SX-70 were known for successfully applying this system. In the latter case, infrared light is usually used to triangulate the distance to the subject. Compact cameras including the Nikon 35TiQD and 28TiQD, the Canon AF35M, and the Contax T2 and T3, as well as early video cameras, used this system.

Found a nice write up from a user-owner, c-weng.com
After its discontinuation by Kyocera in 2000, the Contax T2 has not been seen on store shelves since -- not even the used camera displays with so many Canons, Minoltas and Nikons of yesteryear. Mine has already suffered some scratches on its titanium finish, and so there's even less reason to sell it.
Literally a jewel box, the T2 is equipped with a pop-out Carl Zeiss T* 38mm f/2.8 Sonnar and a shutter release made of synthetic sapphire. Its minimalist elegance, both in form and function, is bereft of any superficiality. I pack it for a dressy night on the town, or to complement my SLRs when using a long telephoto lens. Notwithstanding its beauty and ease of use, this is not the family's favorite camera. I think I know why.
One common pitfall for every point-and-shoot camera, even this one, is the user's tendency to lose focus on an off-centered subject. It's easy to forget to lock the focus (by holding the trigger halfway down) on the subject at dead center, then recompose. The result is often a blurry smile of your friend standing near a sharply focused tree.
Other shortcomings exist. Although the critically-acclaimed and lower-priced T3 (with a 40% reduced profile, and a slightly wider 35mm lens that is also a f/2.8) is a clear improvement over the T2, both are still limited by their rudimentary center-weighted metering and lack of lens shade, filter threading and hot shoe. (For the TVS series that have zoom lenses, Contax does offer an accessory flash.)
In the end, the proven cachet of the names Contax and Zeiss allows Kyocera to corner the market of luxury pocket cameras, even beating venerable Leica. As of spring 2003, the Contax T line includes models with zooms, APS film format and a digital version with 5.0 megapixels. Of course, a svelte all-metal body and Carl Zeiss T* optics are de rigueur: that's the whole point.

Last I checked on eBay.com, mint examples are still fetching close to USD$400.

Peng Heong Hakka Pai Kut (Pork Ribs), Lorong Gudang Nanas Klang

Drove over to Klang today to what was a legendary pork rib stall, that has moved to "proper" premises ... Hmm, hope I manage to find it! Not too difficult to find, near the new Klang masjid (mosque) which looks like it is still under construction, near Goldcourse Hotel, and opposite the famous eatery Song River .

Add: No.2, Lorong Gudang Nanas, off Jalan Pasar, Klang
Tel: +6019 2600 855

Look at this ... It was only early this year, when the stall was still located near the old Klang Bus Stand, and look at what it has transformed into ... The new Peng Heong Hakka Paikut opened about Feb-March 2008.

I was hoping that the food quality hadn't deteriorated ... but I doubt there was chance of that, when I saw how many patrons were in the shop late one morning! Brings back memories when I saw many people ordering tall bottles of soyabean and barley.

The pork chop, whilst slightly fatty, was marinated beautifully and brought back memories of yesteryear, it is as good as it ever was! BRAVO!

Put a splash of their home made chilli sauce, as well as some thick black sauce, on the succulent pieces of pork ribs, and it will certainly bring a smile to your face!

Along with one hot barley, my plate of (slightly oiled, nice flavour) rice and plate of "large" pork ribs (Wasn't so large, but enough for one!), came up to RM$7.50.

CONGRATULATIONS once again on a rags to riches story ... Well done to Chef Peng Heong!

Ramadan Bazaar Shah Alam Stadium - Buka Puasa

Inspired by Masak Masak's blog, I decided to visit my first Ramadan Bazaar, at the Shah Alam / Melawati stadium carpark. It was only 6pm on a Saturday, and the place was nearly packed. Happy Buka Puasa!

Hmm ... what's with all the smoke!?

This is why! Chooks ... chickies ... chicken time!

Very appetising!

Everyone was out in full force ... preparing for the buka puasa about an hour after these photos were taken.

Such colourful drinks and deserts ... Interesting names too, such as Blue Ramadhan!

The lads were working hard at various stalls, and business seemed to be good!

The essential ... dates!

ps - This happened to be my first workout for my latest gadget with my Nikon D80, Tamron SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 LD Aspherical for Nikon

Laksa Shack Assam Laksa, One Utama

Add: LG 225, One Utama, Bandar Utama, PJ
Tel: +603 7725 9693

Describes itself as "The Laksa Specialist", went out for lunch with dad one day ...
From the menu, the Assam Laksa (I think it was RM$7.90) is described as "Lai fun is a piquant broth flavoured with ikan kembong, comes with onion, pineapple, cucumber, ginger flower, mint leaves and prawn paste." My dad thought it was pretty good!

Home cooked Porridge with Chicken and Carrots

Ah ... a simple home made chicken and carrot porridge, served with a jar of preserved lettuce. Delicious after a long week!

Hartge BMW M5 with CARS (Oops, CAR5 registration)

Hartge? Real M5? 19 or 20 inch Hartge rims?
Doesn't matter ... this BMW has a beautiful registration, CAR5 ... spells, CARS!

Restaurant Four Eight, Damansara Perdana

Located: Corner coffee shop called Restaurant Four Eight (4 8 = Translates to Always Prosperous in Cantonese), at Damansara Perdana. Perpendicular to Jalan PJU 8/5G.

What I really didn't like ... Really slow drinks service, and blur staff as well. Couldn't tell the difference between leong-char (herbal tea) and chrysanthemum tea.
And, when it came time to pay-up, gave me this "black face" about "It is RM$3.60, NOT RM$3.00 ... Duh!" (In Bahasa) How rude!

The food was nearly as bad as the service ... bland and expensive "dry chicken curry noodles", with a bowl of yong tau foo, the price was nearly RM$10. Ouch!

Pork Mee is usually a safe choice ... not at this place. Bland!

Even the Chinese Nasi Lemak stall couldn't save the day ... the Meehoon with Pork Curry was mediocre.

E85 BMW Z4 in Alpine White

Somehow ... in alpine white, this BMW Z4 (E85 Roadster) looks a wee bit HOTTER then the "regular" ones ... hmm, is that a body-kit? Regardless ... it looks good!!!

Range Rover Sport

Looking simply GANGSTA :-) The Range Rover Sport.

Wikipedia ... The Range Rover Sport is a mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) produced by Land Rover since the summer of 2005. It shares its platform with the Land Rover Discovery (LR3 in North America) rather than the larger Range Rover.
Land Rover calls the vehicle a sports tourer. It slots below the Discovery/LR3 in size and has seating for five.
The top-level Sport is powered by a supercharged 390 PS (287 kW/390 hp) 4.2 L AJ-V8, making it the second most powerful vehicle in the company's history except for the larger Range Rover Vogue SE supercharged (450 bhp (340 kW), 420 lb·ft (569 N·m)).
A normally-aspirated 4.4 L version is available with 300 PS (220 kW/295 hp). Due to lack of popularity the normally aspirated V8 was dropped from the UK market in 2007, leaving the supercharged model as the sole Petrol model on sale, which has a top speed standing at an electronically limited 130 mph (209 km/h). It has Brembo brakes at the front to improve stopping distances due to the unusually heavy weight (5,866 lb (2,661 kg)) of the vehicle.
The TDV6 turbodiesel engine of 190 hp (140 kW) is available outside the North American market as is the 272 hp (203 kW) TDV8.

Tamron SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 LD Aspherical for Nikon

Another new addition to the family, replaces the "D80 kit-lens". So, it's time to say goodbye to our AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED lens ... and hello to my Tamron!
Why the change? F/2.8 across the entire zoom spectrum, perfect for low-light shooting sans flash, and bokeh bokeh bokeh!

Good construction quality, no complaints! However, beware that the focus noise is something to get used to ... it is however bloody quick to focus!

It comes with a petal type lens hood as well. Paying a third less then the equivalent F/2.8 Nikkor (Nikon) lens for performance that I could probably never tell apart, and getting a simple box rather then the trademark "gold" Nikon box ... I feel that this is a remarkably good value and versatile lens!

Real life results from Juliansi.blogspot.com ... Here's my first workout with this lovely new lens! Ramadan Bazaar at Shah Alam Stadium

VW Golf Mk 3

Was in the mood to Photoshop :-) I like the Mk 3 VW Golf, reminds me of my days in the UK, when a dear friend and colleague used to have a Blue one ... before it was stolen on the streets of Liverpool!

Wikipedia describes that between 1991 - 1999, a remarkable production run of 4.8 million units were achieved.
Did you know ... During the 1990s, Volkswagen sponsored three high-profile rock bands' European tours, and issued a special-edition Golf, with distinctive exterior markings, for each: the Golf Pink Floyd Edition (1994), the Golf Rolling Stones Edition (1995), and the Golf Bon Jovi Edition (1996).

Sony Samurai DAV-FXG99K AV Speaker System

Had a chance to test-drive the latest Sony DAV-FX699K DVD Home Theatre System recently, retails at about RM$2,600.

Tall floor-standing speakers, but equally huge and heavy subwoofer! Basically the system comprises of a DVD + amplifier "unit" which is no bigger then most standalone DVD players, as well as two really tall floor-standing speakers, and a huge subwoofer. I was looking around for the rear speakers, but they weren't to be found, seems this works by 'simulating' the rear speakers.

SONY is just not one to change their remotes ... Would have thought there would have been some evolution, but the RM-ADP023 still looks the same as previous units for various teles, media players etc.

A really cool feature ... DCAC

Stir fried cabbage with shrimps at home

Very sweet and fresh orange juice to start ... yum!

Always popular at home ... Steamed pork with salted egg ... Sweet and sour deep fried fish

I ate nearly the entire plate of stir fried cabbage with shrimps ... deeeelicious!

Malaysian Today - Pasta de Gohan, Sunway Pyramid

As featured in the local paper, MALAYSIAN TODAY.

My second write-up is titled "Japanese Pasta, anyone", featuring Pasta de Gohan, Sunway Pyramid.

Pasta de Gohan, by Waraku - Sunway Pyramid

As featured on Malaysian Today, September 2008!

Tel: +603 5621 8166
Located: LG2 is also known as the Blue Concourse, at the new wing of Sunway Pyramid, close to J&Co Donuts.

I had wanted to try out this interesting concept of a restaurant (Japanese pasta ... Hmm, tasty!?) for a while and finally had the chance to this week.
Pasta de Gohan by Waraku originated from Singapore, where Waraku originally served pure Japanese cuisine. It then spun off the "Pasta de Waraku" concept in Singapore last year, following which the first "Pasta de Gohan" was opened in Malaysia in May 2008.

The atmosphere is pleasant and simple, as it is in most Japanese restaurants, and I couldn't keep my eyes away from the plastic 'model' food plates located all around the restaurant. Great way to decide what one eats!
What struck me immediately was how good Pasta de Gohan’s service was! Efficient, and always with a smile, and best of all was the speed of service, I don't remember waiting more then 10 minutes for our piping hot food to arrive!

A special promotion meant a free small dish of salad came with each mains course.

I chose the Bacon and cabbage with wafu tomato cream sauce (RM$19.80), which is a tomato cream sauce from bonito base. Mild tasting, not over-powering, and the spaghetti I chose was perfectly el-dente (or firm to the bite). The cabbage gave it a nice crunchy flavour whilst the bacon beef balanced off the dish very well.

My makan buddy had the Bacon and vegetables with japanese style tomato soup (RM$23.80), which is a soup pasta from bonito base. This had a strong colour and flavour, very appetising! Once again, one has a choice of spaghetti or fettucchine, and we chose the former. The portions are just enough for one, but left me wanting more!

For just under RM$48, we enjoyed a nice meal, that was slightly out-of-the-ordinary, and they didn't even charge us for the water. I look forward to returning soon, the carbonaras look inviting, as does the "hamburg" (Is this Japanese for hamburger!) ... I can't wait!

Beware of this driver! Sekolah Memandu Jothee, Subang Jaya

He is wreckless and has no consideration for other drivers around him, I had this experience when driving in Port Klang one morning this week. I find it amusing that it is from a Driving School!

Taiwan Oolong Li San Tea tastes like vanilla

Even more remarkable tea ... this is the famed and rare Li San Oolong from Taiwan, which Bro K specially brought back. The pre-taste is vanilla like, I found it hard to believe I was sniffing chinese tea! Soon after, the pallet is left with a mild malt-like aftertaste. Simply divine!

Ti guan yin tea Candy! Goes beautifully with the Li San tea ...

Imperial Poh Leh, The Wellness Group TWG

Seems this is one of the finest poh lehs money can buy :-) as introduced by Bro K.

This is what a brew of Imperial Poh Leh looks like ... dark, strong, but when it dribbled onto my pallet, I was surprised how mild and smooth it was. No strong after-tastes, no bitterness, just pure heaven. The 3rd and 4th brews are the best, whilst the 1st brew has to be poured away to wash off teh tea leaves.

Slowly learning about how to shoot in full manual ...

The 50mm prime Nikkor lens is a great piece of kit, and superb value too.

Minolta X-700 MPS Manual Focus SLR (1981)

A blast to the past ... Look what I found, my dad's trusty Minolta X-700 MPS.

Wikipedia
The Minolta X-700 is a 35 mm single-lens reflex camera introduced by Minolta in 1981. It was the top model of their final manual-focus SLR series before the introduction of the auto-focus Minolta Maxxum 7000.
It used the basic body of the XG-M but added full program autoexposure in addition to the XG-M's aperture priority and metered manual modes. It also introduced through-the-lens (TTL) flash metering, and added exposure lock and interchangeable focusing screens to the XG-M's features.
Based on the X-700 chassis, Minolta later launched the cheaper models X-300 and X-500. The X-500 lacked the X-700's program exposure mode, but featured a fill-in flash mode. The X-300 was the basic model of the late X-series. It lacked TTL flash metering and program exposure mode, it did not show the f-stop-setting of the lens in the viewfinder and it did not have a depth-of-field control button. Basic parts of all three cameras, i.e. shutter, viewfinder, mirror system, and light metering system were identical.

This was the camera I started using when I became more serious about photography, back in 1989 :-)

The build quality and care taken of this camera has been quite astonishing ... it's now past 20 years old! Wonder if the Nikon D80 50mm F1.8 I used to shoot thse shot would still be around in the year 2026 !?

Found a great local website, Malaysian Internet Resources which documents the X-700 in quite some detail!

The mid price SLR market place were getting a little muddy during the first segment of the '80. Primarily the multimode automation used in SLR camera design kicked started by both Minolta and Canon was excessively being emphasized and followed by competition; many potential SLR consumers were getting a little lost and strangely, automation has not actually benefit the industry as a whole; it has also created a confusing state even for many seasoned photographers.
Basically, I felt those bodies have not been designed as user friendly as previous simple-to-operate SLR cameras anymore. Many potential buyers, have in fact turned to alternative of point and shoot cameras rather than getting started to learn how to operate a complicated-to-understand fully auto SLR camera.

However, in 1981 - Minolta released a midrange SLR camera which had many industry observers' eyebrows raised because the camera came with an entirely different concept and has reverted back to basic where priority set on user friendliness and ease of operation, it was an instant success.
Minolta marketed the camera under a "MPS" tag line which stands for "Minolta Program System". Commercially, it was a tremendous success for Minolta and it also signified the rebirth of another dominant force in 35mm market place as Minolta continued to spring surprises years that followed. Among them, it has provided another major leap in 35mm SLR development by introducing the world first body integrated autofocus SLR camera a few years later in 1985 with the revolutionary Minolta AF Maxxum 7000.

On the other hand, Minolta X-700 featured here, has always been remembered as a camera that has added a new lease of life to the dull photographic hardware market during that confusing state of the early '80. It also proved to be a trend setting camera with its simple, friendly and no frills design. Most importantly, the camera has brought some fun back to photography with a simple three basic exposure control modes in Program AE ("P"), Aperture Priority AE ("A") and Manual exposure control modes. Further, TTL OTF flash exposure control was also featured when artificial illumination is required. In particular with the Minolta X-700's Minolta Program System (MPS), it provides a simple focus-and-shoot simplicity of programmed auto-exposure (AE) control: where both aperture and shutter speed are automatically set over a wide range by the camera, with continuous viewfinder LED readout of speeds being set.

The program is designed to maintain fastest practicable speeds as light dims, then give audible beeps, if desired, to guard against blur from subject/camera-movement, making the X-700 ideal if you're starting out in photography or if you want full program automation for ease of use or fast-breaking action.

Although Program AE has been made available in some other cameras, but it took a X-700 to realize its potential to be a decisive marketing elements in SLR cameras as compared to sheer convenience of P&S cameras. Personally, I was even more surprised by Minolta decision to adopt a Aperture Priority AE instead of Shutter Priority AE as virtually, among the big five camera manufacturing players in Japan, only Canon's FD and Minolta's MD lenses were able to provide Shutter Priority AE.

Anyway, whatever the reasons, it was a winning marketing formula to X-700. stainless steel bayonet mount of Minolta has a 54 degree rotating angle; it couples with appropriate lenses for full-aperture metering, finder display input, and automatic diaphragm control; with the MD lenses, it provides programmed AE or aperture-priority AE, older MC lenses can only provide aperture-priority AE operation; stop-down meter readings is possible other than MC or MD lenses.

The clever adoption of Aperture Priority AE over Shutter Priority AE to tailored for requirement of majority of users. Minolta X-700's aperture-priority AE mode lets you control the depth of field but still maintain AE control of stepless shutter speeds fine-tuned for proper exposure with light metered up to the instant of exposure. This mode is excellent for AE photography with the wide range of Minolta SLR system lenses and accessories available, including mirror lenses and close-up bellows - not possible with shutter-priority AE systems. Lastly, for full creative flexibility which may demand for absolute control over selection of aperture values and shutter speeds, the camera can be set independently in any combination in the X-700's metered/full-manual mode.

Other handy features of your X-700 include: touch-switch metering that keeps the LEDs on for 15 seconds after you first touch the operating button; a convenient AE lock for holding adjusted-framing meter readings; +/- 2EV stops' exposure adjustment with LED indicator in finder; self-timer with triple-rate visual/audible indications; flash-ready and Flash Distance Checker (FDC) indications in finder; split-image microprism spot and Acute Matte focusing screen; integral front and back grips for surer holding; Safe Load Signal; and a new easy-load take-up spool. A programmed auto flash, multifunction back, and quartz data back complete the Minolta Program System; also available are a new wireless controller, a moderately high speed motor drive and a slower auto winder, and a broad range of other SLR system accessories which include many Macro/Close-up accessories readily in the system.

Before using your camera for the first time, study this manual carefully all the way through - or at least all the sections covering your photographic needs. As you read, attach a lens, load batteries, turn the main switch on, and handle your X-700 to acquaint yourself with its parts and features. Then load it with film and proceed to actual picture taking. In this way you can take good photos and begin to realize the broad potential of your X-700.

The Minolta X-700 was, once the longest serving manual focus program auto SLR camera which seen its service lasting close to almost TWO decades. The camera has evolved into a few simpler versions, among them the Minolta X-370, a cheaper virtual X-700 version minus the Program AUTO function was very popular in the west. The production was once shifted to my country in Malaysia during early '90 and later the assembling line was moved to China at its later years of service.

Lastly, as the development of influential Minolta MAXXUM class of AF SLR cameras were largely based on initial foundation laid by the Minolta X-700, so this site, may not be the best Minolta X-700 website available, but content has been carefully compiled to avoid replicating similar resources on the network which serves more to its true objective to serve rather than compete. Along with many other classic cameras featured in this website, this website aims to inspire current owners, support potential future users, and also take the opportunity to chronicle another manual focus photographic legend of modern times.

Chinese pastries, Taman Mayang Mas

From a little corner kopitiam, which has an outdoor pastry stall ... All these for RM$4.80. I only tried the Chicken Pie, which was delicious! Also got a piece each of Egg tart ... Kaya Kok ... Char Siew Soh.

Goodview Noodles, Taman Bukit Mayang Mas

Time to carb-up ... well, it was a rainy day (isn't every day this fasting season!?).

Add: 4, Jalan BM 1/2 @ Taman Bukit Mayang Mas, PJ
Tel: +603 7806 1411
Opening hours: Daily, 08:00am - 05:00pm (closed on alternate Mondays)

Seems this place is famous for its lam mee ... but I chose their Thick Curry Noodles (RM$4.80) instead. It was a really good choice! Squeeze in the lime, and you won't be dissapointed, it brings out the flavour of the curry (Choice of prawns, spare ribs or chicken). Simply perfect on a rainy day!

The fried variants of YTF (Yong Tau Foo @ RM$0.90 per piece - Foo Chuk roll, Fried sui kow, Tau Foo Pok) was a lot more dissapointing. Too much flour, too little taste blah blah.... The soup YTF (Fish meatball, Yong Chilli, Bitter gourd, Brinjal - Also RM$0.90 per piece) was decent. Final bill was approx. RM$10 per head, which includes very mediocre "home-made" barley (RM$1.50).

ps - Will be back for their Lam Mee, most definitely ...

Bak Kut Teh with Pork Balls ... at home!

Thanks to my bro for this lovely home made concoction ... Bak Kut Teh, with pork balls, pork ribs which were so tender and sweet ... and lettuce too. Perfect on a rainy night!

Carlos spotted ... CAR105, wow!

Definitely a contender for best car plate in the country ... Respect, CARLOS! Oops, CAR105 I mean.

ps - Again, spotted in the Damansara area, on yet another rainy day.

Mad drivers on a rainy day - 8888 spotted

Hmmm, three "8888" plates spotted in 2 weeks, wonder if that is a (4d) sign!?

ps - Beware of this reckless driver when one's in the Damansara area, I think this man doesn't realise HOW LARGE his BMW X5 is, if you are in his blind spot ... well, he's blind!

Damansara Hokkien Mee, Damansara Utama Uptown

Located: Opposite Uptown , along the corner from the Damansara Utama police station
Opening hours: Daily, 5pm - 2am

Pork Soup - Delicious, but so mucccch MSG!

I remember Damansara Hokkien Mee when it was a small stall, located within a shop-house which faced the LDP. They have now opened their own shop, not far from their original location, and I see a couple more springing up as well ... such as the one in Kota Damansara!

Hokkien Mee - Reasonable, but I much prefer the nearby Champion Duck variety!
Here is a review ... Champion Duck previously known as Ah Wah

This was decent ... Fried Rice.

Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul or Cendol

Penang Lane's famed ... Teochew Chendul (Cendol as I call it) stall.

I shall never forget my first visit to this stall , in each one of my visits to Penang I had a local guide and knowledge to take me to the finest ... and this is probably the finest there is!

Still makes me chuckle when I see the photo of Gurmit and Rosie from Phua Chu Kang PCK , a popular Singapore television show. Yes... this stall is VERY popular and famous!

Prepare to queue up ... or try going to the stall opposite , which is decent by Malaysia standards, but pales in comparison to The Original!

Simply divine ... This IS cendol!

There's also a rather decent Ice Kacang served here :-)

Opening hours: Daily, 10am - 9pm

Not the same any more! I remember way back in October 2006, at its old road-side location, when it was the best ice kacang on this planet ! Sigh ... it's but a dream now.

Hmmm ... somehow it has lost its charm, and the ice felt too rough, the taste too artificial, and overall ... it was simply mediocre!

Still looks the part ... but certainly doesn't taste like it!

We didn't wanna leave dissapointed, so we got a serving of ... cut fruits!

ps - Some history of what was a legendary stall in Penang!
LEE ENG LAI, now in his late fifties, recalls that his grandfather Lee Kar Tee and grand uncle Lee Ah Keat started selling ice kacang as a roving stall in the Jalan Rangoon area in 1923. His father, Ah Kang (Kar Tee’s son), later inherited the stall and moved it to a permanent position. Eng Lai, his brother Eng Huat and sister Ah Kee (above) have been involved in running the stall since the 1960s, when it was next to a snooker bar. Originally, in the 1920s, a bowl of basic ice kacang cost half a cent, now it is RM1.50. Early in 2007, the stall moved into the new New World Park (Sin Sei Kai) food court opposite with ample parking.

"Ghee Hiang...since 1856...its been a tradition."
A Malaysian brandname built over a period nearing 150 years through careful nurturing, sound customer commitment and experience. We pride ourselves in handing down our century old (Fujian, China) recipes and trademarks in freshly baked biscuits, pastries and the art of sesame seed oil production.
Amongst our many other biscuits and pastries, we originated Penang's first "Tau Sar Pneah"(Green Bean Paste Pastry) which till today, we are still famous and unique in its taste, although frequently copied but not matched by our competitors.
Likewise our sesame seed oil have enjoyed rich traditions and successes true to the fact its a leading brandname in the culinary world, chefs and restaurateurs can attest to it. Incredible Beef Soup Kuay Teow @ Lebuh Chulia, Penang

Add: Kedai Kopi Lam Ah @ Lebuh Chulia (Chulia Street), Penang
Located: Near balai bomba (Fire station)

Thanks to C for taking me to the most incredible beef noodles I have EVER had ... well since days of "tang-chai" (little chair, by the road-side) in Ipoh (That is but a memory now, they have since closed, I was but a little boy then!).

This lady chef is simply a maestro!

I chose the kon-loh or dry variety, which meant the to-die-for beef soup came in a separate bowl ... Incredible stuff!! DIVINE!
Tender, tasty, served in a soup that just begs to be slurrrrped and finished to the last drop!

Update April 2009
There's a brilliant review, with gorgeous photos at what2seeonline.com's blog. Enjoy!

Char Choy Pork dinner at home

Nice sunset one week day evening ...

SLURP! Love home cooked meals ... Nice soup, and fantastic Char Choy Pork (Preserved vege pork). The balance was perfect, not overly sour or spicy, and just the perfect balance of sweetness and tastiness!

The veges were so fresh ... and the fish (RM$7 fresh) was beautifully coated in curry powder and fried over a very hot wok, simply DEEEELICIOUS!

Golf on the Nintendo Wii

Here's me on the Nintendo Wii again ... now I am hooked (pun not intended!) on golf!

Had a bad start with a double bogey, but then stabilised with a brace of pars, and then bogeyed the 4th and 6th again .. but surprised myself with a Birdie (my first!) on the par 4 seventh hole. Ended up, 3 over par over 9 holes.
On another round of nine holes, +6 may seem poor ... but check out the erratic performance my Mii had! Started with TWO birdies, and again on the 4th and 8th holes. Total of 4 birds! But ... I blew away the 3rd and 7th (double bogey), another bogey on the 6th ... and worst of all, a double par on the last (Yes, +10!) ... Nett score, +6.

ps - Previously Wii Bowling ... now golf, hah!

Opening hours: 10am - 10pm (Sat-Thurs, closed on Fridays)

Celebrating its 101st ... yes, count that, a year over ONE CENTURY, anniversary is this very famous and institutional Southern Indian cuisine restaurant. It serves C's fave nasi kandar in town, and who am I to argue with Penang Lang :-)

Famous dishes here, according to research, includes Chicken Kapitan/Rose, Beef Rendang, Chicken Briyani, Mutton Kurma and Murtabak.

We ate on the 1st floor, which is air-conditioned, and relatively relaxed compared to the hustle and bustle of downstairs! These dishes were all good ...

Especially enjoyed the ayam goreng / fried chicken. Slurp!!

The Rojak Pasembur takes some getting used to, but I enjoyed it. The korma was good, as was the excellent nasi briyani.
