Food of the Year Awards - 2007

Welcome to Juliansi.Blogspot.Com's inaugural
FoOTY (Food Of The Year 2007) Awards !

Notes:
1) This is solely at the discretion of my tastebuds and stomach
2) I will only award those categories where I have sampled at least THREE different vendors
(For example, I love the roast pig from Overseas Imbi, but had only sampled TWO
i.e. Overseas and Rainbow Palace, thus this category is void)
3) I look forward to any feedback!
4) Also look forward to any stalls not on the list which you think are even better!!

OK, time for that list ... here's the result of an entire year of eating ... oops, researching! :-)

Reunion @ Bangsar Village II

Contemporary, chic, and darn good food ... welcome to REUNION.
Thanks for the reco and the treat, my dear Map.

Great starter ... served and presented beautifully. Nice lighting as well, perfect to highlight the delicate presentation of the dishes.

Porridge with Pei Tan (Century Egg) and Lean Pork to line the stomach ... mmmmh.

Hokkien Mee - The piece de resistance ... Better then Jalan 222's Ah Wah? Quite possibly!

Reunion is the 'new' Yee Garden (same management), hence it is no surprise that their combo platter of roast pork (siew-yoke), char siew and roast duck is exquisite.

Also tried the scrumptious Beef with Ginger ... all the dishes were good!

Superb! The Pomello and Mango dessert was exquisite :-)
The Tong Yuen was rather good too.

Only downside? Expensive. All the above, which included 2 porridge, 2 hokkien mee, 1 platter of roast meats, 1 beef with ginger and 2 mango-pomelo and 1 tong yuen ... for the princely sum of RM$170.

Lafite, Shangri-La, KL

What a celebration at Lafite in Shangri-La KL ... Cheers, Richard!
Christmas + New Year = This deserved a celebration of this magnitude!

Here's the actual review ... Kevin Cherkas prepares a special dinner for us

The merry gang ...

Ps. We had a drink at the very christmassy lounge before dinner at Lafite ...

Who's Lafite's Chef Kevin Cherkas?

Article about Kevin Cherkas from The Star ...

An air of change
By FRED LIM

The venerable Lafite Restaurant has been transformed!

With a lighter and simpler food philosophy, chef Kevin Cherkas tells FRED LIM how he plans to tease the palates of KL foodies. Brimming with enthusiasm, bursting with energy, Kevin Cherkas is the new (food) sheriff in town!

He has just taken over as Chef de Cuisine at Lafite, Shangri-La and already the 28-year-old is making changes. Lots of it. “What’s my style of cooking? That’s a very good question! Cooking is like music, there will always be a guitar, a piano and a violin as these are the basic instruments — tools — for all sorts of music. Cooking is all about the kinds of tools you use in the kitchen too.

I like working with new tools like liquid nitrogen to create new dishes!”Liquid nitrogen? For the uninitiated, Cherkas was a student for a month at El Bulli restaurant in Spain where he worked with Ferran Adria. Adria turned the world of food on its head with his scientific approach to cooking … instead of just a kitchen, he has a laboratory where he works with liquid nitrogen to turn out foam and the like. Together with London’s Heston Blumenthal of Fat Duck restaurant, Adria started quite a culinary revolution.“It’s true that there are many sceptics about Adria’s cooking philosophy but you can’t deny that he has come up with many innovative ways. I see my job as taking the middle road and to gently introduce some of these radical cooking methods to the general public,” explains Cherkas, who also spent a year in Spain honing his skills at the renowned Arzak Restaurant.

Back to the music analogy: Cherkas likens his cooking to rock ‘n’ roll. “It’s something that is hot and trendy today but it will live on for years ...like The Rolling Stones! My background and foundation is still in solid regional cuisine. Today we can get all sorts of ingredients from all over the world but we can try and cook it the French way.

That’s what I’d like to see... new ingredients married together by sound cooking methods.” As to the gentle introduction of Adria’s cooking methods to this part of the world, Cherkas gets philosophical and offers, “Can you imagine serving gnocchi (traditional potato dumplings) filled with foam or gravy inside to the Italians? Of course they will reject it! What happens if good old-fashioned gnocchi is served with a few of these gnocchi filled with foam? You have to ease palates and appetites into new flavours and textures.”

More than just bringing in fresh approaches to cooking and serving, Cherkas is unabashedly concerned about being healthy. He does not use butter and he cuts down on a lot of oil. This in itself is a great departure from the classic French way of cooking.“I believe that natural flavours speak for themselves. All this is better because of new cooking methods.”

His pan-fried sea bass is a real testament to his belief in cooking without butter as the clean taste of the white fish is nicely complemented by a myriad of flavourful vegetables such as earthy red radish, pungent fennel, and zesty orange while spare drizzles of garlic cream add just a hint of smoothness. It’s also about the cut as root vegetables such as the radish and potato are finely sliced to enhance the delicacy of their flavours.

As a new twist to a classic, Cherkas’s seared lamb with sautéed onions, carrots and celery and asparagus spears has a hint of local flavour in its curry “air”. Yes, this is the controversial flavoured foam created by Adria and now further innovated by Cherkas. Air-whipped curry gravy is drizzled around the lamb chunks for dipping and, it is kind of novel to taste “curried” foam but it makes for a fine accompaniment to the sweet lamb. The light spicy foam does little in disturbing the meaty texture of the lamb, it just adds deep spicy highlights to it.

Malaysia is the first Asian country Cherkas is working in so he is also geared up to find a happy balance between his culinary philosophy and the tastebuds of locals. “I am always tasting and trying new ingredients and local food because I am looking for the composition of these local dishes and what makes them so special to the locals. Then I can start using these familiar components in my own creations.”

So far the roti canai and the Mamak mee goreng have special places in his heart. “I think the roti canai is the best in food I have tasted here but the mee goreng is just out of this world!”

Lafite is on the ground floor of Shangri-La Hotel, 11, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Kuala Lumpur. For reservations, call 03-2032-2388.

Chef Kevin Cherkas & Lafite, Shangri-La KL

Fine dining at Lafite in Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur
Richard hosted this dinner ... and it was extremely memorable.

The room was beautifully set up to greet us as we arrived... Stunning floral arrangement, and beautiful soft lighting.

The bread rolls were scrumptions with the sour cream/butter combination. A taster of things to come ...

Cloudy Bay NZ Sauvignon Blanc ... finest white wine this year, very possibly! Not surprisingly, this is one of the world's best known New World white wines, grown in the Marlborough wine region further inland of New Zealand.

Chef Kevin Cherkas (Award winning chef - having worked at 3 Star Michelin Arzak @ San Sebastian, 2 Star Michelin La Broche @ Madrid, as well as 3 Star Michelin El Bulli in Roses) was friendly, personable and extremely passionate about his creations ... And he introduced each and every dish for us, after Denise had given us the heads-up. What an evening!

The starters ... The first, eaten in 4 bites :-) And, I especially loved the cream of lobster.

Time to switch wines ... Red this time. Katnook Estate Coonawara Cab Sauv. And then, it was time for exquisite Foie Gras, served with ... strawberries (Later on, it gets EVEN more innovative!).

Time for a refreshing pallet cleanser ...

Bring on the mains ... Lamb (which was so succulent and beautiful, it nearly tasted like a fine steak), accompanied with popcorn (Yes! Chef Kevin is truly innovative!) and chocolate sauce ...

And this for me ... was the highlight of the dinner. The aesthetically mesmerising 'English Breakfast' ... kidding! Mango and Coconut chiselled into the form of an .. egg!

Lets finish off the meal with a nice cappucino.

Time to say goodbye ... an innovative, memorable, special, and long dinner (we started at 8pm ... and we left at 11pm). I guess its true what they say, eating beautiful food does take a long time!

Red Box Plus Karaoke, Pavilion KL

RED BOX PLUS has arrived , and here's a snippet from an article in The Star...

" WITH stylish red sofas and a cocktail bar in the waiting area, Red Box Plus is set to change the stereotype of dark and cramped karaoke rooms.
We want to create a different ambience and concept from our regular outlets, catered more towards the corporate and socialite circles,” managing director Valerie Choo said.
Instead of a reception counter, patrons walking in will notice the cocktail bar. The flagship outlet of the Red Box Karaoke chain is located on Levels 4 and 5 in the Connection wing of Pavillion Kuala Lumpur, with the main entrance on Level 5. "

Add: Red Box Plus @ Lot No. C4.01.00 & C5.01.00
Connection Level 4 & 5, Pavilion KL Shopping Mall,

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised, 'K'araoke in a classy joint, with good ventilation, an excellent sound system and generally nice ambience. 'K' has gone upmarket!

This was our post-Lafite activity for the evening ... Well, its time for a sing-song ...

Yes, we were overzealous ... so many songs!

Time to say goodbye ... and avoid them roadblocks!

Oriental Cravings, One Utama

Hmm, interesting ... J&R has just opened opposite the very popular Oriental Cravings in One Utama. Not sure if it is such a good idea, as there weren't many lunch crowd-goers to J&R, compared to Oriental Cravings when I was there.

Add: Oriental Cravings, G 359, Phase 2, One Utama, Bandar Utama, PJ.
Tel: +603 7727 2581

We enjoyed the ... Yam Cake ($3.90 - Nice texture, sambal accompanying sambal), and Chee Cheong Fun with Pork Curry ($5.90).

However, I was dissapointed by the Toasted Sandwich with Pork floss and Luncheon Meat $5.50 (did not seem as good as when I first went with the gals a year ago - when we ta-powed it into Bakerzin One Utama!), and the two desserts @ $3.90 ('Sharksfin' melon and Bor Bor Cha Cha - both were overpowered with sugar).

The 'hot pulled tea' was RM$3.90 (aka Teh Si ... not cheap!), and hot purified water (aka water!) was $0.50 a glass. At least it was really hot! Good service though.

JJ Fruit Fusion, One Utama

JJ Fruit Fusion has a remedy juice for every ailment ... sore throats (which is why we went), as well as for the HEART!? Huh .. pushing the boundaries of science I reckon!
Anyway ... the juices here are rather interesting.

One Utama ... Christmas and Rainforest

I like One U ... to me this is still the benchmark mall in the retail landscape of Malaysia, despite newer malls such as Pavilion KL, The Gardens Midvalley, Sunway II, and AEON Bukit Tinggi Klang. Its Christmas season ...

Interesting facts from Wikipedia ...
1 Utama is a popular shopping mall in Bandar Utama, a suburb in the northern part of Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.
The Original Wing, comprising the retail precincts of Centre Court and Courtyard as well as Jusco deparmental store and supermarket, was opened in 1995. It is operated and developed by ÆON Co. (M) Bhd., the operator of Jusco chain of stores.
The New Wing, comprising the retail prescints of Promenade, Rainforest, Highstreet and Oval as well as Entertainment Zone, U-Parkson and Giant is operated and developed by Bandar Utama City Centre Sdn Bhd.

There is a great deal of dispute over whether the name of the mall is "One Utama" or "1 Utama". A recent press release by the management (Bandar Utama City Centre Sdn. Bhd.) states that the official name is 1 Utama Shopping Centre and not "One Utama" or "1-Utama". This move was meant to limit the confusion of its name, although either one of the mentioned names are easily understood and cannot be confused because of their same meaning.
1 Utama is also popularly known as "One U" for short or sometimes as "O U".

What's Rainforest? ...

Shihlin Taiwanese Street Snacks, One Utama

Patrick recommended this place, located at One Utama old wing near GSC Cinema. Simple set-up operated by ONE individual, who takes your order, cooks the food, and serves you the drink!

XXL Crispy Chicken - Very good. Best item in the shop!

Crispy Floss Egg Crepe - Average.

Handmade Oyster Mee Sua - Too strong in flavour, do I detect copius amounts of MSG!?

Seafood tempura - Poor.

Levis changing room ... One Utama

Pappa Kopitiam, Bukit Tinggi in Klang

My 'regular' dry curry hor-fun. Nice!

Set adrift on a memory bliss ...

PM Dawn ... 1991 ... Set adrift on a Memory Bliss ... The oldies are still the best!

" The camera pans the cocktail glass,
Behind a blind of plastic plants; ...
I found the lady with the fat diamond ring.
Then you know I cant remember a damn thing.
I think its one of those de ja vu things,
Or a dream thats tryin to tell me something... "

What were you up to in 1991? :-)

Bak Kut Teh ... One more time before 2007 comes to an end!

There isn't much which I haven't described or discussed about Teluk Pulai Bak Kut Teh in Klang, near Menara ING - Maybank. Well ... there is a map on this previous review just in case you needed directions.
As for BKT ... its been rather much a staple food of mine all year!

My brother, Gary, even described my 'blog count' (i.e. that I proclaim to have over 1,000 blog entries) to be a cheat as I visit and blog about this INSTITUTION so many times ... haha!

So why did I blog this place once again? I wanted to try flash-less photography, and some super macro, highly dangerous near the hot cauldron, oops ... claypot ... of HOT bak kut teh. Good food, good tea, great company. Nuff' said!

Happy New Year Munsy, Rich, Angeline and Uncle Jeff!

Fat One Steamboat 'Lok-Lok' in SS2, PJ

One early morning ... nearly 2am ... at SS2 in PJ near 7-11 ... I spotted ...

Mmmh ... can't resist!

Fat One Lok-Lok or Steamboat ... just pick your favourite meats, seafood, veges etc ... and dip them in the various mini boiling cauldrons. After a couple of minutes, pick up the sticks, dip them in the sauces (chilli - sweet - satay ... I like satay!) which you can spoon on-to your styrofoam boxes, and voila ... magic. The pork balls are especially yummy!

YES! You can even cater the stall to your home, for about RM$1,000 Mr Fat One will feed 60 of your guests. Enjoy!

Mr Fat One ... at the end of your meal, just dispose of your styrofoam box, and let him count the sticks, which are identified on the tips with colours indicating prices for each, and pay your bill ... and come again!

Retro Bar @ Modesto, Jalan P Ramlee in KL

Retro is located alongside Modesto at Jalan P Ramlee in KL, not far from Aloha. This was a intro visit, as the club had just opened its doors to the public a week ago. Interesting place, nice crowd, good value drinks, and not smokey as it has an open concept. Jakeman from Hitz FM was there ... spinning the 70s, 80s and 90s tunes all night ... good stuff!

This is the Jakeman!

Excellent briyani - Victor's christmas do, TTDI

Christmas 2007 just doesn't end :-)
Was invited by Victor to his home in Taman Tun for ANOTHER christmas party ... Friday 28th Dec.
He was spot on with the Briyani Rice, catered from Taman Tun. Very yummy! This was one of the best catered food parties I had attended, with ALL the dishes being good. The tidbits and desserts made by his friends were equally scrumptious, and you know I can't resist a good agar-agar (jelly).

Songs of 2007 - Our Compilation

An idea that was hatched on 22nd December this year ... each of the party-goers to Richard's Christmas BBQ would contribute a song to be compiled into a 'Songs of 2007' CD. The songs need not be from the year, but just has to have some form of meaning and significance to an event / events from 2007!

Teow Chew Meng, Subang ... No photos please!

Teow Chew Meng is an interesting eatery located in SS14 in Subang Jaya
Add: 9 Jalan SS14/1, Subang Jaya
Tel: +603 7877 9298
Tel: +6012 472 8387
Our group went along to this restaurant cos' we felt like something 'hot' (temperature) on a cold rainy night, the temperature was only 24-25 C last night!

I managed to take a few photos of the starters before I was told not to!

Mee sua is the Chinese longevity fine noodle and the dish was cooked in clear, plain soup but had a starchy appearance when served.

These photos came from other Bloggers, who may not have the same NO PHOTOS EXPERIENCE I did ... we also had Octopus and the gals shared an Onei for dessert.

But I was instantly dissapointed ... NO PHOTOS!
alicetsj.blogspot.com describes this scenario,
"Funny another thing I discovered in this restaurant, there were signs of like "No Outside Food" "No Pets" and I found one, "No Cameras". WTF??!!! I wouldn't care but just keep on snapping my handphone cam, haha! Why they wouldn't allow it, I hell dunoo. But birthday or any occassion celebrators, pls do not go cos photo taking is prohibited, thus you will miss taking pictures of those moment, haha!"

What I don't understand is how other reviewers managed to take photos, was this a recently introduced rule? Why couldn't they make an exception even though I informed BOTH waiter and waitress that I was a food blogger, and just wanted to do a write up about the restaurant and its food. Tsk tsk ... I wasn't a happy Flogger last night!

AllMalaysia review ... Eating Out at Teow Chew Meng

OK, OK .. enough ranting! How was the food?
It was actually rather good, the side dishes especially the Octopus, turned out to be more tasty then the Mee Sua. But overall, rather good.
I am still curious ... WHY CAN'T WE TAKE PHOTOS!?

UPDATE! Thursday 27th Dec, 3pm ...
Received an SMS reply from the restauranteur:
Firstly we would like to express our apology for not allowing you to photograph our food.
Nevertheless we can't blame our staff totally because it is our policy not to allow patrons to take photographs, unless prior permission or arrangement is made.
Like most restaurants do, we have our reasons for doing so.
However we do welcome reporters, columnists, and food commentaries like you to review not our food but also the other aspects of our restaurant.
However it has to be done with proper procedure to avoid misunderstanding between the parties.
As such we would be most delighted if you could call me (Penny) or my husband (Steven) beforehand.
Any inconvenience caused is much regreted.

Desserts (Tong Sui) @ Pavilion, KL

Time for some tong sui aka desserts, in Pavilion KL ... not cheap, too sweet, but bearable!
Iced Jelly Cocktail - Boring!
Gingko Nut Soup with Beancurd - Way too sweet
Red Bean Lotus Paste - Nice hint of orange peel
COINCIDENCE! The total price was exactly the same price as the nasi lemak from Mak Tom's!

Mak Tom Nasi Lemak @ Pavilion KL

I have now sampled FOUR of the 28 outlets at Pavilion's massive foodcourt (known as Food Republic, located on the lower ground floor of KL's flagship mall) ... J&Co Donuts, Madam Kwans and now ... Mak Tom's Nasi Lemak. The 4th being the subject of my next blog, dessert time aka Tong Sui.
Anyway, Mak Tom's Nasi Lemak turned out rather decent, and I was impressed by the colourful display as well as the huge wok of ... SAMBAL!

Perodua Kenari with big ass spoiler!

This Kenari's rear spoiler was so large it cast a shadow over the rear windscreen of the car ... perhaps that was the purpose of the monstrosity!

Wikipedia (again!)
The Perodua Kenari is a small five-seat compact car or supermini car produced by Malaysian automotive company Perodua. The Kenari is based on the first and second generation Daihatsu Move kei car (small car) but is powered by a 1.0 litre DOHC engine.

HINDRAF chaos in town

Here's a typical example of a jam along the NKVE in late Nov / early Dec this year ... Chaos!

What is it all about? Wikipedia has some brief notes ...
HINDRAF or Hindu Rights Action Force is a coalition of 30 Hindu Non-Governmental organizations committed to the preservation of Hindu community rights and heritage in secular Malaysia.
On 30th August 2007, a class action on behalf of Malaysian Indians was filed at The Royal Courts of Justice in London to sue the UK Government for US$4 trillion (US$1 million for every Malaysian Indian) for bringing Indians as indentured laborers into Malaya, "exploiting them for 150 years" and thereafter failing to protect the minority Indians' rights in the Federal Constitution when independence was granted.
As the group, which represents mainly working-class Indo-Malaysians, could not afford the legal fees required, a petition was circulated with 100,000 signatures to be presented to Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom to appoint a Queen's counsel to argue the case.
HINDRAF organized a rally on Sunday, 25th November 2007 to submit the petition at the British High Commission. Malaysian police refused to grant a permit for the rally, and set up roadblocks in Klang Valley along roads leading up to the rally to screen motorists entering the city center and identify troublemakers. They also advised the public not to participate in the rally, and arrested three leaders of HINDRAF.

Whats a Paintball marker?

Wikipedia, the source of all knowledge!
A paintball marker, also known as a paintball gun, is the central piece of equipment in the sport of paintball. Markers make use of an expanding gas (carbon dioxide or compressed air) to propel paintballs through the barrel.
The paintball community generally prefers to use the term "marker" rather than "gun" in order to mitigate the public perception that paintball markers are weapons, and that paintball is a dangerous sport. The term derives from its original use as a means for forestry personnel and ranchers to mark trees and wandering cattle.

Tippmann Pneumatics is a manufacturer of paintball markers, paintball equipment, and airsoft guns. Tippmann also manufactures pneumatic sewing machines and some industrial products under the name of Tippmann Pneumatics.

The A-5 is a semi-automatic paintball marker. It utilizes a new loading concept called the "Cyclone Feed." This enables the gun to have a high rate of fire without the addition of aftermarket loaders. It uses a larger surface area and a series of rotating arms to move paintballs into the firing chamber of the gun.
The arms come together to make a star shape, holding a total of five balls between its arms. The arms push the paintball completely into the firing chamber, almost eliminating the chance a paintball will be chopped by the front bolt.
The stock Cyclone is rated for a maximum of 15 balls per second. While higher rates of fire are possible, the stock mechanics are not designed to deal with the stresses this will place on them. To achieve higher rates of fire there are several third party cyclone ratchets available. This limitation was addressed during the creation of the X-7.
In addition to the stock semi automatic function, the A-5 can be easily upgraded with either the Response Trigger or an electronic grip frame . The response trigger (rt) uses a small pneumatic piston to create automatic fire and runs off excess blowback gasses.
The E-Grip uses a 9-Volt battery, a microswitch, and a solenoid to trip the sear . The A-5 can often be purchased with these upgrades already installed.
In appearance the A-5 was modeled after the H&K MP5K but can be modified to look like a number of different guns.
It is one of the most upgradeable markers on the market, with many different cosmetic and performance parts. The general paintball community sees this marker as one of the best basic utility markers of the woodsball crowd. However its lower general rate of fire, excess weight, and large profile make it an unpopular choice among serious and tourney paintball players. While this marker is a good starter marker and can be had for a small relative investment, the price of upgrades can quickly outstrip the costs of higher end base marker with identical or superior capabilities.

Bufori .. spotted at Mont Kiara

Wikipedia has a write up about this very interesting niche car company ...
Bufori is a modern brand of rare automobiles resembling 1930s coupes. The company is owned by Australian brothers Anthony, George and Gerry Khouri. In 1986, Gerry Khouri began to build three special sports cars, one each for the three brothers, which led to the formation of the company.
The acronym "Bufori" stands for Beautiful, Unique, Funtastic, Original, Romantic, and Irresistible.
The Bufori Motor Car Company Pty. Ltd. is a proprietary company limited by shares and registered in Australia, as is the Bufori Motor Car Company (M) Sdn. Bhd. in Malaysia. Originally, all of the manufacturing and sales operations were conducted in Australia, but in 1998 full production moved to new facilities at Kepong, a suburb of Kuala Lumpur, in Malaysia.
The production facility in Kuala Lumpur has an installed capacity of 300 vehicles per year, and employs 110 employees.

Celebrating December at Zeta ... sorry for the late post!
Ps. Thanks to my co-photographer, Jo, I was caught in a few incriminating shots ... tsk tsk.

Hey, Weets in da house!

More friends ...

Too cool!

And as the early hours of the morning arrived...

Decanter @ Damansara Heights

Decanter @ Damansara Heights is a nice refuge from the hustle and bustle of the city ... First time I had their Pie-Tee (very good), but only found the Chicken Chop 'Hainanese' to be average.
Check out my previous review for directions!

The Assam Laksa was full of flavour and rather good ... as was the Shepherds Pie.

Bowling Competition @ Summit, USJ

Company bowling comp at Summit in USJ ... a great afternoon out!

Chow Yang (SS2) - Sweet and sour pork

Comfort food in the form of Sweet and Sour Pork always comes in handy :-) The one at Chow Yang is possibly the best anywhere! Full details of location and contact number at previous review

This was complemented by Spinach in Stock, Layered Pork with Peanuts, Hokkien Fried Meehoon, and Stir fried Tapioca Leaves.

Heh heh ... I like the homeliness of this place, check out the hole-y tablecloth!

Bumbu Bali @ Puchong

Quite a few bloggers had visited Bumbu Bali, so a couple of weeks ago we decided to give it a try ... interesting Balinese fusion, in a quaint setting, and good food.
I liked my beef & pasta salad very much, the Nasi Campur was good too - RM28 and comes with Grilled Chicken, Grilled Prawns, Grilled Fish and Grilled Cuttlefish. Its interesting that the meat is grilled in 'bbq style' over a coconut husk fire. The highlight though had to be the Satay Lilit (seafood on lemongrass skewers), very yummy!

Chicken Rice @ Madam Kwans, Pavilion KL

Lunch with Shih Ling when she was in town earlier this month ... nice simple meal, Madam Kwans may not be spectacular, but it is consistent.
Chicken and mushroom rice (RM14) - Good!
Nasi Lemak with Chicken rendang - Shih Ling's choice, always good.

J&Co Donuts ... Queueing wth Shih Ling

A long over-due blog from 8th Dec!
Shih Ling was in town ... and I met up with her at Pavilion in KL.
This was the first time SL queued up for .. donuts!

The queue on a Saturday was loooonnnggg... I previously queued for about ten minutes, but it took about 30 minutes this time round! Here's the view of the Open Kitchen as you are queueing up ... at this point of the queue, you may still have to stand around for 10 minutes!
And here is the view you get when you eventually make it through the queue!

I think it was worth the wait ... but perhaps we should have purchased a few more, compared to the three that we picked! (Yes, the pink strawberry one is mine!)

Details of my first visit ... J&Co in November when it first opened

Big Apple Donuts ... Yummy!

Really dubious distinction of being ...
1) 'American' (Really not sure if this is genuinely a US brand!)
2) Very VERY similar to J&Co Donuts

HOWEVER, on the positive side ...
1) I think these donuts may actually be BETTER then J&Cos
2) Its worth queueing up for!
3) This durian variety with the porcupine durian thorn effect on the pastry is EXQUISITE!

OK ... here's the deal. Drop me a call or SMS or email or Blogger comment or Multiply feedback if you want to join the panel to BLIND TEST Big Apple v J&Co ! Lets try to do this within a month's time :-)

Tim Sum @ Hoong Foong, Bukit Tinggi (Klang)

Simply average tim sum @ Bukit Tinggi area in Klang ... Near the Steamboat joints (in fact by night, this restaurant serves Pulau Ketam Steamboat).

I did however enjoy the Loh Mai Kai and the Seaweed wrapped dumplings.

Nyonya Colors, Klang - Improve your service!

Nyonya Colors @ 1st floor of Klang's AEON Bukit Tinggi Mall ...
The kuihs here are rather nice, but the service is just poor.
There is simply NO clarity in which way one should queue (How about this for a 'free tip' ... have arrows on the floor, and a little chain to guide people to the cashier).

The colourful kuihs ... (Washed down with some super-sweet home-grown coconut juice)

Hey, its time to forgive! Its Christmas!!
(I do hope that the service at various other outlets in AEON Bukit Tinggi will improve in '08!)

Mat Rempits on the NKVE

Idiots riding VERY wrecklessly on the NKVE towards Klang, at 2am on Christmas Day ... sigh!

Wikipedia actually has a definition for this irresponsible youths!
A Mat Rempit is a Malaysian term for 'an individual who participates in illegal street racing', usually involving underbone motorcycles (colloquially known as Kapcai) or scooters. Not all Mat Rempits are involved in street racing; some of them simply ride their motorcycles in a dangerous and haphazard manner for fun.
Mat Rempits usually travel in groups and race in bustling city centres on weekend nights. In recent times, Mat Rempits have been linked to gangsterism, gang robbery, street fighting, vandalism, theft, bullying and rape. Most motorcycles used by the Mat Rempits do not meet standard specifications, or have been modified extensively.
Additionally, some Mat Rempits do not have valid motorcycle licenses, do not pay road taxes, and ride stolen motorcycles. A growing number of housing estates have also been turned into racing tracks.

It is estimated that there are about 200,000 Mat Rempits in Malaysia.
In some other countries, the term Mat Rempit is also used, but more to refer to one as a motorcycle lover or rider (Mat Motor), as opposed to an illegal motorcycle racer. Sometime the terms of Mat Rempit misused to refer any individual who rides an underbone motorcycle.

Driving Range @ Tropicana PJ

Nice 2 tier driving range, average pricing at RM$10 per 100 balls (A further $4 to buy your own high tee for the mats, they don't provide them). Cheik and myself went to smash some balls after nasi lemak, a good little work out on a Sunday morning!

Village Nasi Lemak @ Damansara Utama

Always a sensible (but be patient, queues are long and staff can be forgetful) choice ... RM$9 each for Nasi Lemak. I had the rendang chicken and beef variant, and Cheik had the fried chicken and sotong version. Yummy!
Add: 5 Jalan SS21/37, Damansara Utama, 47400 PJ.

La La Chong @ Ara Damansara

Lala Chong @ Ara Damansara (The new estate on the opposite side of the highway, across from Saujana - En route to the old Subang Airport).
Was recently invited for a work dinner with some customers and colleagues at this famous eatery, and the first dish (Fat Tiu Cheong aka Buddha Jump Over the Wall) was pretty expensive ... as were some of the other fish and lobster dishes. All washed down with copious amounts of Johnny Walker Gold Label ... Overall, a good meal!
What's that you ask? Wikipedia has the answer...
Buddha jump over the wall is an umbrella term for a type of highly complex Chinese soup or stew consisting of many ingredients of non-vegetarian origins and requiring one to two full days to create.
The name of the dish reflects the appeal of the soup. It is said to be so enticing that even a vegetarian monk (Buddha) himself could not restrain himself and would sneak out of the monastery (literally "jump over the wall") to steal a taste.
A typical recipe includes many ingredients including quail eggs, bamboo shoots, scallop, sea cucumber, abalone, shark fin, chicken, Jinhua ham, pork tendon, ginseng, mushrooms, and taro. When served in restaurants, the more expensive ingredients are emphasized to justify the lofty price normally charged for this soup.

Ps. A bit of history about Mr.Lala from New Straits Times ...

Yim Sie Chong, at the age of 39, is the owner of two seafood restaurants named La La Chong -- one across the road from Terminal 3, in Subang, and the other in Ara Damansara, Subang.
He was anointed La La Chong when his friends found that his interpretation on how to prepare mussels was second to none; the thick gravy served with his signature dish made his clients order plate after plate. Today, La La Chong is a name that is as famous as his dish.

The best char siew just got better!

I went to Max's Char Siew at Spring Golden, Section 25 in Shah Alam twice today ... Once to ta-pow some lunch for dad and myself, and a second time to get some of the magical char-siew for a Barbe I am going to later this evening. There's an address and telephone number in ... A previous review of this incredible chef's restaurant

The standard excellent stuff ... RM$35 for this spread (including 3 packs of noodles)

To wash it down, Yanna made some home-cooked dessert, lovely!

The magical 'Sakura pork', by special order only, char-siew ...
Beautiful texture, great flavour, and roasted to perfection. This is divine!
Not cheap, but this is a special piggy from Ipoh, RM$30 per stick/leg of char-siew!

Disclaimer: Max of Spring Golden ONLY prepares this Sakura pork on special order, you may want to let him know that Juliansi.Blogspot.Com recommended you!

Good choice of Riesling for the night, RM$165. Well worth it, dry, crisp and excellent on the pallet.

Here comes the tapas ...

Kay had some oxtail soup too ... I think she enjoyed it. All in all, the bill came up to just over RM$300. A good evening!

Ps. The gals were celebrating that Kay was about to tie the knot ... this weekend!

Wong Ah Wah at Jalan Alor, KL

Wong Ah Wah is the home of KL's most famous chicken wings ... the Siew Yoke Noodles and Lam Yui Pork Ribs are equally good!

Merry Christmas @ Starhill, KL

Starhill was tastefully decorated this christmas, there was even a snowflake-generating machine at the entrance elevators!

Royce chocolates ... now in Malaysia!

I love Royce chocolate from Ngee Ann, Singapore, but for years I thought it wasn't available in Malaysia ... I have found it now! Isetan @ KLCC is the home of Royce!
Here's me tearing apart a RM$35 box of Nama Champagne Chocolate from Royce!

Its worth going through the routine of unwrapping the multi-layer / dry ice enclosed packaging, this is the result ...

Its sublime ... smooth ... not overly sweet ... full of chocolate taste. Best chocs outside of Belgium and France? YES!

Ps. Wikipedia says ...
Royce' Confect Co., Ltd. (株式会社ロイズコンフェクト, Royce' Confect Co., Ltd.?), also known as E-Royce', is a Japanese chocolate manufacturing company. The company's central offices are located in Sapporo.
Royce was first established in July 1983, with a total capital of ¥10.0 million. Royce's first head office building was located in Hokkaidō, about 500 miles north of Tokyo. By November of that year, Royce' began to produce their first chocolates.

The famous frozen latte which is actually rather good (and gimicky at the same time!) ...

The only reason we sat down to have a meal is because there was no room on the Level 3 area, but it turned out to be EXCELLENT. Nice salmon and scallop salad platter, and fabulous crayfish broth.

But this was what we really came for ... the excellllllllent pastries!

There's a good website too, you can see a picture of Tun Mahathir on it as well.

Cows @ Pavilion

Visit Holland year I think ... anyway, here are some cows I stumbled on between Pavilion and Starhill :-)

600+ km on a full tank!?

A full tank of gas currently costs just under RM$110 ... and this is the number of kilometres I can get outta my wheels, IF I lighten my right foot!

Medan Selera SS2, PJ ... Indomie Goreng & Satay

The finest late night mamak area in M'sia ... quite possibly!
Whats good here? Chicken rice (see previous blog), Satay, Indomie, Teh/Kopi, Burger Ramli, Tom Yam et al ... yes, its all good!

Pity they no longer do KAMBING ... now one should choose BEEF. Its good!

Simple, yummy, excellent! Ibrahim does a great Indomie Goreng with Telur Mata Kerbau, make sure you wash it down with his excellent Teh Si or Milo Kosong Panas.

First time I had the Fried Sotong, its good too ... Seems this guy used to operate out of the Medan Selera opposite Jaya Supermarket (Section 14). Nostalgia ...

Finally ... the last arrival ... the pak cik serving Tom Yam may be a wee bit forgetful, but its worth the wait. Good stuff!

Chicken rice ... SS2 Medan Selera v Damansara Perdana

I have found one of the BEST chicken rice ... ever ... in Malaysia! SS2 in PJ 'night hawker centre' square aka Medan Selera, look out for the Indomie signboards.
The one I had at Damansara Perdana was really poor ...

Yanna whips up some ... Kampung Chicken!

The verdict ... Food is good quality, service decent, prices are keen, and its halal too!

Not so good: Fan sui yip in belacan, and the overly large plate of Lah Lah (Kam Hiong)

Suz and Paul in town! Oversea Imbi, KL

Suz and Paul were in KL ... and we met up for a meal at their favourite eatery, Oversea in Imbi!
History ... In the mid-1990s, when I first meet Suz, she had tried to convince me many a time to take my family to Oversea at Imbi ... I never did, until my first trip there a few months ago, and I was hooked!

Initially, there was going to be 5 of us, but as the numbers dwindled down to the 3 of us ... I had to adjust the menu accordingly. Oversea were kind enough to inform me on the telephone that "THERE IS NO WAY YOU WILL FINISH THE PIG, WHY DON'T YOU GO FOR ANOTHER PIG DISH EG. 'NORMAL' ROAST PIG" .
What really happened ... We EASILY devoured the entire piggy! Yes, it was THAT good!

The masterpiece ... Loh Mai Chee aka Roast Suckling Pig over a bed of Glutinous Rice. Paul convinced me to chew on the ear, and it was ... interesting!
Reservations for this masterpiece is a must, call Oversea @ +603 2144 9911 .

Kau-wong and Ham Yee Fah Lam Poh were good as always!

Ps. Suz and Paul, it was a lot of fun catching up once again!

Mitsubishi Lancer 2.0 GT ... A rare breed

Is this the most elusive 'mass produced' car in Malaysia today? Quite possibly!
Why? It is rumoured that the waiting list is 13 months!!
I also think it is one of the best looking Jap saloons to date ... Not to mention great value, good performance and kitted out to the teeth (Check out the stock 18 inch rims, and pedal shifters!). This is probably the only one I have spotted stationary, photo taken at KLCC's car park.

Some big fans of Greenview Seafood ...

Ps. Uncle Jean Marc and myself did a mini 'blind test' on two brews of Carlsberg ... the STANDARD one won! The 160th Anniversary Edition was a wee bit too bitter.

Petronas Twin Towers ... Some facts and figures

Did a brief Wikipedia study of the Twin Towers this morning, what did I find out about my 2 favourite features of the building (The Skybridge and Lifts)?...

Skybridge
The towers feature a skybridge (constructed by Kukdong Engineering & Construction) between the two towers on 41st and 42nd floors, which is the highest 2-story bridge in the world.
The bridge is 170m above the ground and 58 m long. The same floor is also known as the podium, since visitors desiring to go to higher levels have to change elevators here.
The skybridge is open to all visitors, but free passes (limited to 1,700 people per day) must be obtained on a first-come, first-served basis. The Skyway is closed on Mondays.
Visitors are allowed to go only on the 41st floor as the 42nd floor is used only by the tenants of the building.
The skybridge also acts as a safety device, so that in the event of a fire or other emergency in one tower, tenants can evacuate by crossing the skyway to the other tower. However, the total evacuation triggered by a bomb hoax on September 12, 2001 (the day after the September 11 attacks destroyed the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City) showed that the bridge would not be useful if both towers need to be emptied simultaneously, and the capacity of the staircases was insufficient for such an event.
Plans thus call for the elevators to be used if both towers need to be evacuated, and a successful drill following the revised plan was conducted in 2005.

Elevator system
The main bank of elevators is located in the center of each tower. All main elevators are double-decker with the lower deck of the elevator taking passengers to odd numbered floors and upper deck to even numbered floors.
In order to access an even numbered floor from ground level, passengers are required to use an escalator to access the upper deck of the elevator. From the ground floor there are three groupings of elevator.
The "short haul" group of 6 elevators take passengers to floors between level 2/3 and level 16/17.
The "mid haul" group of 6 elevators take passengers to floors between level 18/19 and level 37/38. There is also a set of shuttle elevators that take passengers directly to levels 41/42.
In order to get to levels above 41/42, passengers are required to take the shuttle elevators and then change elevators to the upper floors. These connecting elevators are placed directly above the elevators serving levels 2 to 38. The pattern now repeats with the upper levels, one set serving levels 43/44 to 57/58 and one set serving levels 59/60 to levels 73/74.
Apart from this main bank of elevators, there are a series of "connecting" elevators to take people between the elevator groupings. Unlike the main elevators, these are not of the double-decker type. Two elevators are provided to take people from levels 37/38 to levels 41/42 (levels 39 and 40 are not accessible as office space).
This avoids the need for someone situated at the lower half of the building to go down to the ground floor in order to gain access to the upper half of the building.
The elevators contain a number of safety features. It is possible to evacuate people from an elevator stuck between floors by manually driving one of the adjacent elevators next to it and opening a panel in the wall. It is then possible for people in the stuck elevator to walk between elevator cars.
During an evacuation of the buildings the shuttle elevator is allowed to be used. This is because there are only doors at levels G/1 and levels 41/42 therefore should there be a fire in the lower half of the building, this enclosed shaft would remain unaffected.

Other facts and figures
Combined, the towers have 1,000,000m2 of floor space
The towers have 32.000 windows
The building costs were US $ 1,2 billion
The towers were designed to symbolise strength and grace using geometric principles typified in Islamic architecture
Without pinnacle the buildings are 'only' 378m/1,240f tall
The towers are part of the 100-acre KLCC Development. Other components of the development include the Suria KLCC, a six-story, 93,000 square feet shopping centre(with 270 specialty shops, cinema's and a food arcade), Menara Maxis, Menara Esso, the 20-hectare KLCC Park
The whole complex was built on a former horse-racing track
The main occupant of the buildings is Petronas, the national oil-company
Though completed in 1998, the buildings were officially opened on August 28th, 1999
Each tower contains 80,000 m3 of concrete in strengths up to Grade 80, almost 11,000 tonnes of reinforcement, and 7,500 tonnes of structural steel beams and trusses.
And, an interesting movie fact ...

Entrapment
The 1999 movie Entrapment starring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Sean Connery, features the Tower's complex security systems being infiltrated in order to steal from a high-security bank in the tower at midnight on New Year's Day.
A prime stunt sequence takes place when the pair are stranded atop the connecting bridge and are confronted by a Kuala Lumpur police helicopter. In one scene, the skyline of Kuala Lumpur (prominently featuring the Petronas Towers) was super-imposed with an urban river filmed in the city of Melaka, some 80 kilometers away.
The scene created an illusion whereby the Petronas Towers were surrounded by shanty towns, thus prompting disapproval from Kuala Lumpur residents. Ironically there are indeed shanty towns within a couple of miles of the building, simply not the ones shown in the film. The film was never banned in Malaysia although FINAS viewed the film as degrading to the Malaysian community.

How does it compare with other mega-tall-structures?
The Petronas Twin Towers were the tallest buildings in the world until Taipei 101, as measured to the top of their structural components (spires, but not antennas), took over the record. Spires are considered integral parts of the architectural design of buildings, to which changes would substantially change the appearance and design of the building, whereas antennas may be added or removed without such consequences. The Petronas Twin Towers remain the tallest twin buildings in the world.

The Sears Tower and the World Trade Center towers were each constructed with 110 occupied floors – 22 more than the Petronas Twin Towers’ 88 floors. The Sears Tower and the World Trade Center’s roofs and highest occupied floors substantially exceed the height of the roof and highest floors of the Petronas Twin Towers. The Sears Tower’s tallest antenna is about 250 feet (76 meter) taller than the Petronas Twin Towers’ spires. However, in accordance to CTBUH regulations and guidelines, the antennas of the Sears Tower were not counted as part of its architectural features. Hence, surpassing the roof of the Sears Tower by 10m.

The designers and builders
These towers, which were designed by Cesar Pelli, an Argentine-American architect, were completed in 1998 and became the tallest buildings in the world on the date of completion. The 88-floor towers are constructed largely of reinforced concrete, with a steel and glass facade designed to resemble motifs found in Islamic art, a reflection of Malaysia's Muslim religion.
Because of the depth of the bedrock, the buildings were built on the world's deepest foundations. The 120-meter foundations were built by Bachy Soletanche, and required massive amounts of concrete.
In an unusual move, a different construction company was hired for each of the towers, and they were made to compete against each other. Eventually the builders of Tower 2, Samsung Constructions (the Construction Division of Samsung Corporation), Kukdong Engineering & Construction (both of South Korea), won the race, despite starting a month behind Tower 1, built by Hazama Corporation, and Tower 1 (Hazama Corporation) ran into problems when they discovered the structure was 25 millimeters off from vertical. The shopping mall beneath both towers was constructed by Birmingham, Alabama based Bill Harbert International.
Due to a lack of steel and carbon fibre bombshells the huge cost of importing steel, the towers were constructed on a cheaper radical design of super high strength reinforced concrete. High-strength concrete is a material familiar to Asian contractors and twice as effective as steel in sway reduction; however, it makes the building twice as heavy on its foundation than a comparable steel building. Supported by 23-by-23 meter concrete cores and an outer ring of widely-spaced super columns, the towers use a sophisticated structural system that accommodates its slender profile and provides from 1300 to 2000 square metres of column-free office space per floor.
Petronas, Malaysia's national oil company, set out to build the world's tallest building. Although other buildings such as the Sears Tower have higher occupied floors, a higher antenna, and a higher roof, the Petronas Twin Towers' spires are classified as architectural details and rise to 452 m (1483 feet), giving it the greatest structural height until Taipei 101. Taking advantage of the rules governing building measurements (counting spires but not antennas) has generated controversy over the towers' claim to the title. However, the tradition of including the spire on top of a building and not including the antenna dates back to the rivalry between the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building.

Food (too obvious), Golf (too much work), Drinking (too early in the morning), and the Map suggested ... why not go up the Twin Towers? Sam Mei Bak Kut Teh @ Pandamaran ... 999th Blog!

Welcome to my 999th blog ever ...
And yes, this BKT joint certainly deserves to take a special place in my blog. Its that good!

Sam Mei (Three Beauties) Bak Kut Teh is located adjacent to Lai Hing kopitiam in Pandamaran (Klang), and I was introduced to this place by Eugene and his dad.

What's good ...
The fragrant rice
The incredibly delicious soup

What's interesting ...
They don't give you any extra soup / top-up
The fact that you may have to wait 30 minutes for your order to be taken / to arrive

What's not so good!
If you insist on Yau Cha Kuay, there isn't any!
If you like to drown your BKT rice with soup (like I normally do!)
This is the purest form of BKT I have ever enjoyed, and it was simply divine. Even without the Yau Cha Kuay, having JUST enough soup, AND waiting for half an hour ... I would still return. The best? Quite possibly!

For detailed directions on how to get there, its located on the main road adjacent to..
Sri Choon Keng seafood directions

The magic...

The aftermath...

KL ... by night

An attempt to shoot in full manual behind the windscreen of a car! I love stopping at this traffic light in KL, facing the courts ... :-) KL ain't so bad!

Mia Palencia ... Bedroom Musician Series 8

This was the 8th installment of the Bedroom Musician Series, which showcases the newest and bestest songwriters in our country. And Mia was there as well!

Once again, it was held at Equatorial Hotel's classy lounge, Flo. The acoustics and sound engineering here is actually rather good, and everyone gets a decent view of the stage.
The first set consisted of Automatika (from Shah Alam!), the excellent Rashdan Harith, and finally Bobby from Sabah.

And then it was Mia's turn for the second set of the night ... she sang her beautiful numbers including the divine SAYANG, before she crooned some fantastic Christmas Carols... and then she even moved on to a tribute to Bon Jovi (Living On a Prayer!!) ... and even sang the Blues. What a night!

Haha, I love Mia's guitar strap!

Ps. This wouldn't be a food blog if I didn't comment on the makan and minum of the nite ... The chicken from Jap uber-restaurant Kampachi was supposed to be rather good, and I did really enjoy the RM$170 M3 Chardonnay (2005 this time round ... last time I had it at Cilantro it was the better 2002 vintage).

Korean grub at Bukit Tinggi AEON Mall in Klang

A strictly average Korean meal at Che Go in AEON Bukit Tinggi mall, Klang ... Bulgogi aka Claypot-rice just didn't have the ooomph! The 'agedeshi-type' tofu was average too.

This was my makan buddy, Eugene ...

UK registered Jaguar in ... Subang!

Sure brings back memories ... :-)

Rakuzen Japanese, Subang

Rakuzen in Subang Jaya, not far from SJMC and Subang Parade ... always an excellent choice. Appetizer was a chicken-pumpkin stew (free of charge), followed by sushi with oysters (good!), some mixed skewers (Average), and for mains I had the Unagi Bento Box (David had the Sashimi variant). Had a work dinner here, cost RM$150 for the two of us ... well worth it, good service, yummy food.

M3 (E46) on the North South highway

My dream car ...

Some notes from Wikipedia ...
The 2001 E46 M3 appeared worldwide with the new 3.2 L S54B32 engine. At the time of the car's introduction, this engine had the highest specific output naturally aspirated engine ever made by BMW, producing 343 PS (333 HP) and 365 Nm (262 TQ).
first batch of E46 M3s delivered were Laguna Seca Blue. The available SMG Drivelogic (also known as SMG II) transmission, a Formula 1-style electrohydraulic manual gearbox with no clutch pedal and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, is also a highlight.
The model also came with a new 6-speed transmission and red-line RPM of 8000, a first for any BMW. The engine also consisted of 6 independent throttle bodies and electronically driven throttles (without a cable). The M3's S54 naturally aspirated engine produces more than 100 horsepower per litre (340 bhp/3.2 litre), a notable feat.

The Wii ... Funan @ Singapore

Wikipedia ... The Wii is the fifth home video game console released by Nintendo.
The console is the direct successor to the Nintendo GameCube. Nintendo states that its console targets a broader demographic than that of Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3, but it competes with both as part of the seventh generation of gaming systems.
A distinguishing feature of the console is its wireless controller, the Wii Remote, which can be used as a handheld pointing device and can detect acceleration in three dimensions.
Another is WiiConnect24, which enables it to receive messages and updates over the Internet while in standby mode. Nintendo first spoke of the console at the 2004 E3 press conference and later unveiled the system at the 2005 E3.
Satoru Iwata revealed a prototype of the controller at the September 2005 Tokyo Game Show. At E3 2006, the console won the first of several awards.
By December 8, 2006, it had completed its launch in four key markets.
During the week of September 12, 2007, the Financial Times declared that the Wii was the current sales leader of its generation.

So damn addictive! Hmm, when will I get one!?
Bowling on the Wii ... so darn intuitive, so realistic, and heck a lotta fun!

Anthony Bourdain about Food

Excerpt from Anthony Bourdain's conversation with Christopher Tan, for The Edge in Singapore (July 2002)

What's bad food?

“Bad food is made without pride, by cooks who have no pride, and no love.
Bad food is made by chefs who are indifferent, or who are trying to be everything to everybody, who are trying to please everyone. They’re shooting buckshot rather than at a specific target.”
Bad food is fake food, Food that tastes the same in Singapore as it does in Butte, Montana. Generic food. Food that shows fear and lack of confidence in people’s ability to discern or to make decisions about their lives.“
“Food that’s too safe, too pasteurised, too healthy – it’s bad! There should be some risk, like unpasteurised cheese. Food is about rot, and decay, and fermentation….as much as it is also about freshness.” This said with a certain relish.

What's bad food?

“I guess it’s one of those things…y’know pheromones? You meet a woman and gee…everything works, she smells like someone you want to spend your whole life with. Vietnam was like that for me. Certain dishes are like that for me. It’s just right. It feels right.”

Tian Tian Chicken Rice, Maxwell Market in Singapore

Meal 10 - Chicken rice which required a long wait (!)

Why does one have to QUEUE up for everything in Singapore? First it was LV ... now its ... CHICKEN RICE!

Ah... finally at the front of the queue! Hmmm... 'No Reservations' Anthony Bourdain says its good, must try lah.

Whilst waiting, we devoured some rojak. Which was good!

The chicken rice ... finally arrived ... took queueing time of over 30 minutes!
Turned out to be NOT as good as the previous day's chicken rice , sigh ... but still it was OK.

Thanks to Shih Ling and Lip Teck for the company, and Chris and L for the yummy treat!

Durian ice cream, Scoopz @ Parkway Parade
