Pork mee and Rojak, Subang

Simple breakfasts are always the best ... delicious Pork broth with kuay-teow, and Fruit Rojak.

Restoran 88, Kuchai Lama (KL)

Restoran 88 is tucked away in Jalan Kuchai Lama, off Old Klang Road ... not far from Restoran Talipon (Yes ... "Telephone Restaurant"!) ... We had quite the feast washed down with some Macallan that I had brought along:
  • Four seasons starter
  • Poh King pork ribs (Plum+Mayo sauce)
  • Cray fish in butter
  • Four-angled beans
  • Otak prawns
  • Fei-chau fish in signature teo-chew-style sauce (Very good!)
  • Spinach in reduced 'siong-tong'
  • Sweet and sour pork
  • Marmite crabs
  • Sweet and sour crabs
  • Man-tous (deep fried)

Bill came up to $390 for the nine of us ... Not bad considering we had WAY MORE THEN WE COULD EAT! But somehow the meal seemed a little flat ... compared to the first time I visited this place with Dave & Rhona.
HOWEVER, the service more then made up for the meal, really friendly staff ... And when we complained about the first batch of man-tous being burnt, he thanked us for our feedback, and promptly gave us a replacement. He even told us that he appreciated our feedback, and was grateful that we did not simply 'not tell him' ... wow, what one need not learn from Harvard Business School!

Soya Bean, Funny Mountain ... Ipoh

No visit to Ipoh would be complete without visiting Funny Mountain near Fuh San Timsum :-) Simply the smoothest Tau Foo Fah and creamiest Soya Bean!

On the way there, this view brought back much nostalgia ... the original location of my FAVOURITE curry noodles aka 'Chuen Foong' opposite the Balai Polis.

Blurb ...
Sun Yeong Wai Roasted Duck restaurant's culinary specialties are barbequed and roast meat. Established in Ipoh 10 years ago, the Sun Yeong Wai or Yeong Wai brand name is synonymous with roast ducks. Owner of Sun Yeong Wai : Danny Shoo

A brief history of time ...
In 1976, Danny's father started his roast duck business with a self-designed oven in front of his restaurant in Jalan Yau Tet Shin. His business propered and soon 2 more outlets opened in Jalan Lau Ek Ching and Jalan Yang Kalsom.
Although aged 67, Danny's father, the patriarch of Sun Yeong Wai restaurants continues to improve his techniques for roasting ducks.
Between 1980 and 1990, Danny's father traveled to Hong Kong annually to enhance his culinary skills in the preparation of roast ducks and seek ways to improve his business. By the 1990's business gradually passed from father to son.
Danny, who runs the family business today, started helping at the restaurant at the tender age of ten. He started with a roast duck rice stall in Gunung Rapat and within 5 years opened his first Sun Yeong Wai Roasted Duck Restaurant.

Thanks for the treat, Aunty Yvonne and Uncle :-)
I have to say, possibly the BEST DUCK in Malaysia, lean but tasty, juicy but crispy. Great stuff! Only London's Royal China in Bayswater comes close ...

Cameron Highlands v KL - Temperature!

Cameron Highlands - Flowers & Fresh Produce

Plenty of good value fresh produce in Cameron Highlands, stopped at a couple of markets along the main road leading to Ipoh / Simpang Pulai ...

Interesting pitcher plant ... and lots of cacti in Camerons! Wonder why?

Sunday Mass at Cameron Highlands, the pianist was from CHR!

Funny sign ... what it actually means is 'Yin-yang' steamboat aka Tom-yam soup on one side, and Clear broth on the other. Haha :-)

Cameron Highlands - Marrybrown Fried Chicken

One of the most elusive fastfood chains in Malaysia ... I know of one in Genting, and it is rumoured there is one in Puchong! Yay, there's a Marrybrown in Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands!
Delicious fried chicken, original recipe ...

Cameron Highlands Resort - Lexus

Seem to be a lot of 'pairs' of cars at CHR ... first I saw 2 new E60 5-series arriving together ... then these guys ... same Lexus GS300 ... same gunmetal grey ... but one's from KL and one's from Perak!
Wikipedia, "The Lexus GS is a series of mid-size luxury sports sedans / executive cars sold by Lexus, the luxury division of Toyota. The first GS, based on the platform and running gear of the Toyota Crown, was introduced in 1991 in Japan and two years later in the United States, Europe and selected markets in Asia."

Cameron Highlands Resort - Steamboat farewell dinner

Dinner on our last night ...
Steamboat certainly tastes better in the cold weather aka highlands!

Cameron Highlands - Tea @ Smokehouse

A trip to Camerons would not be complete without TEA at Ye Olde Smokehouse!
The best scones I have EVER eaten ... even better then the ones in the UK! At RM$7.50 each, not cheap, but oh so delicious ... nice warm and moist ... fabulous! Delicious Strawberry Jam (well worth the $18 per jar to takeaway ... and we sure did!) to go with it too, yummy!

The Bangers and Mash were OK, and so was the apple pie .. but the highlight had to be the Scones!

Cameron Highlands - Ye Olde Smokehouse

Ye Olde Smokehouse in Cameron Highlands, just down the road from the golf course (On the roadfrom Tanah Rata heading towards Brinchang), is a luxurious English inn, with ivy-covered stone walls, multiple fire places, and timber frames.
Closing my eyes, I could imagine I was back in England! SERIOUSLY!
Even got to tour a couple of the rooms, with rates ranging from just under 400 ringgit to over 800 bucks for the even more well appointed rooms, which have fireplaces!

The interior ... and a couple of the rooms

The vintage phone booth adjacent, and the gardens

Cameron Highlands - Classic Mercs

On the windy road leading to the Sg Palas Boh Tea Plantations ... 5 vintage Mercedes taxis, including this one. Look at the car registration, sure looks like 'AVIS' aka the car rental company!

Cameron Highlands - Boh Tea Plantation (Sg Palas)

BOH Plantations was founded in 1929 by J.A. Russel, a British businessman during the British colonial era in Malaya. He was optimistic of the tea plantation business due to huge demands despite of the world-wide Great Depression at that time. As a result of the potential, he applied for and was granted a concession of land for his first tea garden in Habu, Cameron Highlands.
Today, BOH Plantations owns three tea gardens - the first garden in Habu, Fairlie Tea Garden and Sungai Palas Tea Garden. To ensure the freshness of its tea products, BOH Plantations also set up a packaging factory near its main garden. BOH tea products are distributed both in domestic and international markets.

Following the visit to this beautiful plantation, I now have a soft spot for Boh Tea ... Hmm, maybe I should re-do the Blind Test Tea Challenge :-)

Tea ... tea... everywhere!

Cameron Highlands Resort - Tiffin lunch 2

On Day Two, we had another Tiffin lunch ... Food at CHR is actually rather palletable, not quite to the standard of PLR (Pangkor Laut Resort), but still homely and good. Perhaps it is the COLD WEATHER that makes everything taste yummier!

Here's a view of the golf-course alongside CHR!

Cameron Highlands Resort - Spa Village

YTL resorts fame themselves for their glamorous and luxurious spas ... This one is no different!

After putting on some slippers and robe ...

One then enjoys a fantastic long 1/2 hour bath, with plasma tele screen and headphones alongside. I chose the STRAWBERRY treatment ... but of course, I was in Camerons!

Following the bath, I was pampered to a STRAWBERRY YOGHURT aroma-therapic massage, fabulous. Then we had some nice Boh tea and some homemade oatmeal cookies with jam. Simply a relaxing 2hr 45mins!

Cameron Highlands Resort - Breakfast time

Good morning from Cameron Highlands ... a crisp, beautiful morning. Fabulous!

CHR serves 100% fresh orange (and watermelon) juices ... refreshing!
There's a choice of oriental (Yee-mee) or western (sunny side up, with a fry up) breakies, nice start to the morning.

Cameron Highlands Resort - Western dinner & Strawberries

This is what Camerons is all about ...

1) Good Western food (yummy cod!) at YTL's Cameron Highlands Resort (CHR) ...

(2) Beautiful and gi-normous STRAWBERRIES! Look one of them was nearly the size of Ester's head .. heh heh!

(3) Good whiskey ... Japanese style :-)

Cameron Highlands Resort - Cold!

It rained at least a couple of hours a day ... but that didn't dampen the spirits of all who went! In fact, it was great, cos' it lowered the temperature to 23c in the day, and 18c in the early mornings brrrrrrrr :-)

Cameron Highlands Resort - Tiffin lunch

A simple tiffin lunch on day one in the cold highlands :-)
Soup ... Ikan tengirri ... Delicious curry chicken ... Very yummy Haagen Daz ice cream with fruit cocktail

Cameron Highlands - Resort (800th Blog!)

Welcome to my 800th Blog entry!
Its been quite a journey ... But like all great journeys, the best is yet to be.

Wikipedia describes ... Cameron Highlands is a highland region located about 20 km east of Ipoh and about 150 km north of Kuala Lumpur in Pahang, Malaysia. At 5,000 ft (1,500 m) above sea level it is the highest area on the mainland, and enjoys a cool climate, with temperatures no higher than 25 °C and rarely falling below 12 °C year round.

Background:
The Highlands were named after William Cameron, a British colonial government surveyor who discovered the plateau during a mapping expedition in 1885. The fame of Cameron Highlands then grew during the colonial era when British planters realised the potential of its fertile mountain slopes for growing tea, then a prized commodity. The Cameron Highlands are still home to many tea plantations, being Malaysia's largest tea-producing region. The area is also known as a major supplier of legumes and vegetables to both Malaysia and Singapore with its many farms, and is one of Malaysia's prime tourist destinations.

How to get there?
From North-South Expressway, exit the expressway at Tapah and then proceed via route 59 straight along the way to the highlands. You are estimated to reach the first town of south End Ringlet in 1 hour 30 minutes.
Alternatively, you can exit the expressway at Simpang Pulai, Ipoh and proceed via a new route 145 to Cameron Highlands along the way to the top.You can expect to reach the first town at the northern end, Kampung Raja, in 1 hour.

Julian says ...
Cameron Highlands Resort
YTL developed its third (after Pangkor Laut Resort and Tanjung Jara Resort) high-end resort in Malaysia, here ... replacing the old Merlin Hotel. Its a really impressive upgrade with all the trimmings of a high-end hotel :-)

Checkers, Damansara Heights ... Pork Delight!

Not the easiest restaurant to find... but CHECKERS is well worth scouting out. Head along Jalan Beringin at Damansara Heights, and then look for Lorong Setia Bistari 2 .. voila!

To start ... Really good Beef Wellington, Beef Ribs and Steak with Mexican sausage.

The propietor asked us to try his Pork Knuckle with some Kimchi ... I declined, don't like that spicy stuff! The Pork Knuckle and Saurkraut was good!

And for dessert ... rum laced mud-cake served with yummy dairy icecream, and LOTS OF RUM laced the chin-chau in the Chendol!

Korean - Arisu, Riana Green

Tuk Bae Gi Bulgogi ($20)
Ramyeon (Korean curry noodles!) ($10)
Kimchi Jeon (Kimchi Omelette) ($20)

Food was priced a little lower then other Korean restaurants (The barbecue stuff), but we went ala carte instead, and weren't dissapointed. Many Korean families and folk seem to visit this place, so I guess it is 'authentic'!

The unlimited refills of Korean side dishes ... The ikan bilis and apple salad was espesh yummy!

Secret Recipe, Shah Alam

Three of us shared this little lemon cheesecake ... hmmm, are the servings getting SMALLER !?

Hong Kong Miu Kai, Sri Petaling

Decided to adventure to Sri Petaling's Hong Kong Miu Kai to savour some HK style treats ... well worth the treat. The highlight was definitely the pork ribs in mayo-sauce, and the char siew chan pao. Excellent! The yee mee soup with roast chicken was rather good too, and the other dishes were OK.

Zanni and Jim's wedding, Carcosa Sri Negara

Congratulations you guys!
A beautiful couple celebrating their special day at a very special venue ... Carcosa Sri Negara. The food was incredible too, so yummy!

The Shellfish Soup was yummy, delicious Satay in Lemongrass Skewers, excellent Ayam Masak Merah and Rendang Beef, and really good kuihs as well ... just fantastic!

Chef and Brew, Damansara Heights

A late lunch - early tea session at Damansara Heights' Chef and Brew ... haven't been here in ages. At least its still consistent ... The verenable starter 'Cheesy Wanton', followed by Hainanese Chicken Chop (Average...) and Kong-Poh Pasta (Damn spicy!). Just a nice quiet place to hang out at the weekends.
Ps. I do wonder how this place stays open with so few clients, guess it helps that it is run by the Victoria Station family!

And for dessert ... we had Chocolate Durian Chilli Cake, which C+B actually sources from Allan and Nigel's JUST HEAVENLY located opposite! Stinky yet yummy, huh!

iPods have moved on...

Michelle's latest toy ... so nice! Careful anyone wanting to pinch this sleek little fella, check out the laser-inscription on the rear!

Breakfast at Tiffany's...

Well not quite, but nothing beats a homely Fry Up :-) Yum!

85th Birthday celebration ... Greenview, PJ

Happy 85th Birthday Sam-Yee-Poh :-)
Thanx to Aunty Peng for the treat at delicious Greenview Restaurant, between SS14 and SS2 in PJ. Very yummy!

The average to strange (the intestines in sweet and sour sauce!) dishes ...

The excellent dishes! I especially enjoyed the To-Fu, Yee Mee, Prawns and of course the very VERY yummy starter-dish.

Hyundai Getz M5 variant?

This is the chepaest alternative to a BMW M5 with FOUR TAILPIPES ... a Hyundai Getz 1.3 with ... duh ... FOUR TAILPIPES!

Loh See Fun Pork Noodles @ Section 17, PJ

Exquisite! So simple ... and so darn fantastic! Located close to 'Ah Mui' at Section 17, this breakfast joint is packed, but well worth the wait. The pork soup which accompanies the Kon Loh Loh See Fun is simply yummy.

Whilst waiting.. do try the curry noodles, very good, as well as the rather good tim-sum bits and pieces.

As an alternative, one can also have the Loh See Fun in soup. I prefer the Kon Loh version, but the soupey one is good to tapow home ...

Fat One Steamboat, SS2

Surprisingly good ... so simple, but so darn yummy! Road-side Steamboat at its finest ... wonderful gravy :-) mmmh! Would you believe, this was my FIRST TIME partaking in 'road-side steamboat'!?!

Veuve Clicquot - La Grand Dame 1995

Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut
Unmistakeable with its signature yellow label, has earned its reputation for being "best in class." The matriarch of the brand, Madame Clicquot (1777-1866) was one of the first businesswomen of the modern era. When her husband died, she took over his small Champagne house, a widow ("veuve") at the age of 27. She made important technological innovations (including the invention of riddling) and led the house to world renown. She is perhaps most famous for sending a secret shipment of her Champagne to Russia in 1814, in defiance of Napoleon's blockade!
Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut (Yellow Label) is gold in color, crisp and dry, with a fine, persistent sparkle. It is a classically styled blend of two-thirds black grapes (Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier) for body, balanced with one-third Chardonnay for elegance. Its complex nose of apple, citrus and caramel is followed by rich flavors of citrus, hazelnut and baked bread, with a crisp, spicy finish.

This La Grand Dame 1995 vintage ... We say, simply marvellous. Light, complex, yet full bodied. Amazing lightness on the pallette, and just a wonderful champagne.
Wine Spectactor ... "A '95 with attitude. Firm, focused and full of biscuit, citrus and hazelnut flavours backed by vivid acidity, though there's enough creaminess to keep everything in line. A good nutty finish."

This was our first trip to Flam's (newly opened) which is located at Bukit Bintang / Bukit Ceylon area, opposite the Green Man. Gianluca (originates from Milan, Italy) was an incredible host, and even served us some exquisite fresh oysters to accompany the champers.

KL is just a city of ironies ... many fabulous places, but no where really suitable to go on particular occassions! KLCC area ... Mandarin Oriental? Nah ... And Maya? Just too quiet!

Hot Chocolate Cafe (Thai-Italian), Damansara Heights

Was going to Checkers for dinner, but it was packed and the manager was rather cocky telling us to sit outside ... so we headed to this restaurant instead. Along the same road as Checkers, at the corner-lot. Starter was VERY dissapointing, horrid belacan flavour to the 'Thai salad', but the Seafood Chowder made up for it! The mains were YUMMY though, Thai Samrod Chicken Chop and Thai Basil Chicken Chop, both served on a delicious bed of fried rice. Best was saved for last ... Fabulous Japanese Cheese Cake.

Rakuzen, Japanese dinner at Plaza Damas

This is the first time I have been to this branch of Rakuzen, located at Plaza Damas in Sri Hartamas ... Thanks for the treat :-) Food was above-par, but still not as good as the Subang branch, but the service was poor.

This is not an exhaustive list of what we had (Good idea to go in a group, one gets to try a lot more different foods!) ... K's Avocado Salad, my Crab stick salad (dissapointing! the one at Subang is a lot better!), Agadeshi Tofu, Unagi Handroll (Excellent!), Chicken Cutlets, Beef in teriyaki-sauce, Chicken curry (Ah, I like this!), Hamburger patties (Yes! It was darn good!), BBQ Beef, and Cha Soba (Didn't have the smooth qualities of the Subang branch).

Delicious by Ms Read, One Utama

Much better service at this outlet, we were served by Intan, and the food was rather good too! This certainly is an improvement on the pathetic treatment at Bangsar Village Outlet :-)
(1) Calamari - Average
(2) Pate - Fabulous!
(3) Thai Pomello Salad - Rather good
(4) Sirloin steak sandwich - Good! Nice shoe-string fries were served alongside
(5) Braised Oxtail - Always good
(6) Salmon - Good too

The bill arrives....

Max's Char-siew at Spring Golden, Shah Alam

Can't get enough of Max's char-siew ... this is a place I frequent REGULARLY! Head along the Kesas on the way towards Klang, take the Shah Alam exit, and follow the slip road towards Jalan Bukit Kemuning (I think!) ... go straight down the road, about 5 minutes later, you will see a first set of traffic lights, take a right, and it is on the row just past Public Bank. Or better yet, just call Max (ask me for the number if you want to go) ... Best Char Siew in town? Very possibly!
Details / Location et al ... An old review of this superb charsiew place!

KTZ , SS2 in PJ

Nuff said about this place I reckon ... been here enough times! Just felt like some sweet dessert ... KTZ doesn't excite, nor does it dissapoint!

Backofen pastries, Sri Hartamas

Backofen is a German Bakery ... located at Sri Hartamas
Add: 34 Jalan 24/70A, Desa Sri Hartamas, 50480 Kuala Lumpur
Butter pudding & Lemon pie for dessert ... it was OK. Nothing to shout about, but I rather like the German austerity of the place.

Korean BBQ @ Daorae in Sri Hartamas

My first Korean BBQ in Malaysia, and it was yummy!

Daorae Korean BBQ Restaurant
9, 1st Floor, Plaza Crystal Ville Center
Jalan 23/70A
Desa Sri Hartamas

The maze of side-dishes ... my favourite? The potatoes mmmmh! So good it makes my HALL OF FAME. We actually asked for it twice ... and it is all included in the meal (i.e. FREE!), as was the interesting rice-y Korean tea.

We then served some delicious, slightly spiced, soup ... as well as a Korean Omelette. These were complimentary too. Hmm, when do we start paying?

Our main courses ... Bulgogi and Bi-bim-bap, along with BBQ Beef and BBQ Pork marinated in Daorae Secret Sauces!.

And finally, just before the 140 ringgit bill came, here is the sweet watermelon! It was well worth it, a HEARTY meal, GOOD service, and AUTHENTIC KOREAN grub!

The bill @ Daorae Garden
Gal Bi Sal ($45)
Bul GoGi ($25)
Dol Sot BiBimBab ($18)
HanBang Dweji ($35)
And ... No charge for Wang GalBi (Omelette), Tea and side dishes ... fab!

Hainam Chicken Rice, Sg. Buloh

Decided to go for a drive in the 'countryside' ... Couldn't resist stopping over at Kampung Baru Sg. Buloh, opposite the 'pasar' (wet market), in U19 area. The chicken rice turned out to be simple and nice! Both the roast and steamed chicken were tender and tasty ... as was the rice, yummy! All this for under 10 ringgit ... gotta love Malaysia!

Fork & Spoon cafe, Kota Damansara

Located in a newly developed area of Kota Damansara ...
Add: 26 Jalan PJU 5/11, Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara, 47810 PJ

Decided to give this new cafe a go, this style of eatery (homely local food in an air-conditioned environment, with lots of 'dark wood') seems to be springing up everywhere! Turned out to be so-so, until the LAST DISH came ... The Bubur Cha Cha was very good! Alas, I found the other dishes (Nasi Lemak, Set meal - Chicken/fish/veg/soup, Barley-Gingko-Dried beancurd, and Lime-sourplum juice) only average. At least it was all reasonable, at under 25 ringgit.

Chicken Wings, Jalan Alor

Synonymous with Roast Chicken Wings ... Wong Ah Wah at Jalan Alor, off Bukit Bintang in KL ... where else! Yummy supper after massage at 3.30am! Simply delicious! The Singapore Fried Meehoon was really good too.
Location and full details on my previous review ... Chicken Wing Blog

Liang Xin Reflexology, KL

Following a hectic week of work on the lead up to Hari Raya, as well as a round of golf in the afternoon ... we decided to go for a massage. 1 1/2 hours for RM$100 ... well worth it! Friendly service, clean, and they even serve fresh fruits (Grapes, Melon etc), and fresh orange juice! Seems the owner is also the propietor of a fruit buisness.
Located along Jalan Bukit Bintang, we parked at Federal Hotel and walked across the road. We got there at 1.15am ... and fell asleep soundly , until they were closing up at 3.15am!

Vine Shop, Plaza Damas

Its been ages since I visited Dannyboy's Wine Shop at Sri Hartamas' Plaza Damas. As it was the Hari Raya weekend, gathered a few of my mates, and we had a couple of bottles there.
i) Shiraz (2005) - St Hallett Gamekeepers Reserve (easy drinking, for a Shiraz!)
ii) Cab Merlot (2004) - Churchview Estate (rather good)
I like the Wine Shop, great service from Danny and his crew, and just an easy going place ... can sometimes be packed, but as most people were out of town, we had the place to ourselves!

Tien Tien Lai Tai-Chow, Setapak (KL)

SK treated JL and myself to dinner after golf in Setapakland ... and it was gooooood! A rather obscure little tai-chow on the back roads of Setapak, where we had Ham-choy Soup, Sweet and sour Garoupa (700g of freshness .. plenty for us to share) , delicious Pork Chop and Yau Mak. Excellent spread for only 52 ringgit!
The rice was particularly interesting, individually steamed, a little crunchier then normal, good!

Port Klang Golf Resort

Played at the course near my factory for the first time ever ... We were heading to Nilai from Soo Ka's home, but it started pouring ... Ka thought it may not rain in Klang, and he was right! So we made a detour ... and played on his home course :-)
Turned out to be a nice course, playable with some challenging layouts, and nice smooth greens. Course held out well despite the rain on the previous day, and it only drizzled on a couple of holes. The rainjacket I brought back from the UK certainly helped!
The TURFMATES (Yamaha units, ask for No.100 ... its fast!) were a lot of fun, sort of like a jetski on grass!
The fees = 80+ ringgit for Green Fees, and 30 bucks for the Turfmate.
The result? Ka & Julian (7 holes won) -v- Pete & Jeanette (11 holes won)
Julian (108), Ka (109), Pete (101), Jeanette (113)
The verdict? Pete and myself thought very highly of this course, it has tremendous potential, and we will definitely return back with more friends!

My favourite shot ... Pete taught Jeanette how to blow up some Magic Mushrooms with her 7 iron ... POOF!

Leftovers the morning after our BBQ

Brunch at Soo Ka's before we headed off to Golf on Hari Raya Sunday :-)
Left-over Honey Oriental Pasta , Yanna Fried Meehoon and Chicken Curry , and Dynasty Timsum . Mmmmmmmmmh!

Cheik's boy, Sparky, was around too ... seeking refuge in the living room due to the heavy rain, what a great boy he is!

Nasi Lemak at Pappa Kopitiam, Bukit Tinggi

Quick breakfast at Pappa Kopi tiam the morning after the BBQ ... was so tired! Food here at the Bukit Tinggi outlet near my home is always OK (Nissin Noodles with Fried Egg and Sausage, Nasi Lemak , Kaya Toast) , but I wonder ...
i) Why the lady propietor who sees us there very often NEVER comes around to say HI?
ii) Why the service is more and more 'blur socks' (Foreign workers), even forgetting to put BUTTER on the 'toast', which looked more like a bun? Nevertheless, the bun or roll was rather nice!

Hari Raya Barbecue at Mi Casa

Thanks for coming you guys :-)
Here are some photos of my new barbecue set (and new garden!) ... How we attempted to start the fire (KIDS! DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME! Chivas does NOT work!) ...

Yay, Chef Endee and Souz Chef Yin Tze arrived to save the day! He is certainly Mr Barbecue!

On the BBQ ... we had Lamb, Chicken Wings, fresh Prawns from Pulau Ketam, and Sausages. Prawns were supplied from Fishy Fishy , a great little seafood shop, thanx!

Other dishes ... Hon's Oriental Pasta which was a real HIT! Yanna's Fried Meehoon and delicious Chicken Curry. And no party would be complete without Max's (Spring Golden, Shah Alam) Char Siew ... damn yummy.

Jared had a yummy good time ...

Finally after eating for 4 hours ... dessert ... Dau's super Kuching cake, and thanks also for the fabulous Bakerzin cakes. Thanks also to the boys for the Macallan and crates of Beer!

Devi's Mamak ... Kelana Jaya / SS5 in PJ

Along the same road as the Char Kuay Teow place ... couldn't resist popping by this indian restaurant, Devi's. The food was only average though!
To accompany the Roti Canai , Roti Pisang and Papadoms, we had Prawn Curry and Spicy Chicken. To wash it down, Sirap Limau as always!

Char Kuay Teow ... Halal! Kelana Jaya / SS5, PJ

Nestled away in the corner of Kelana Jaya / SS5 ... Subang Ria coffeeshop, which houses amongst other stalls ... this Char Kuay Teow place. Not only is it tasty ... they don't use ANY pork! A first I reckon :-) Click here for my previous review of this place.

One Noodle, SS2 ... Yummy fried rice!

A return visit to this noodle house at 66-68 Jalan SS2/67 PJ. Call +603 7877 8499 if you get lost! We like the food here, simple, clean, fast service, tasty, but on the slightly more expensive side.
Here's what we had ... Items in BLUE - Good , and items in GREEN - Must eat! YUMMY!
i) Shanghai Steam Pork Dumpling, $6
ii) King Soy Sauce Fried La Mien, $10.80
iii) Chinese Pork Chop, $10
iv) Pepper and Salt Egg Plant, $8
v) Squid (Starter - Japanese style), $3
vi) Hokkien Fried Rice, $11.80 * CREME DE LA CREME *
vii) Ice Lemon Honey, $3.80
viii) Red Bean ice shake, $4.80
ix) Raspberry Ribena, $4.80
x) Pineapple cooler, $6.20 (don't try ... its way too sweet!)
All in all, another good meal here, but not cheap at just under $70 for the 3 of us. But there was a LOT of food (and drinks ...).

Selamat Hari Raya!

13th & 14th October 2007 ... The muslim new year has arrived!
What does that mean?
i) Its a public holiday on Monday

McDonalds' Chicken Porridge & Banana Pie

Supper from McD's ... Surprisingly good CHICKEN PORRIDGE, a couple of BANANA PIES and a FRESH ORANGE JUICE ... all for under 10 ringgit.

Did you know ...
Wikipedia - McDonald's Corporation is the world's largest chain of fast-food restaurants, primarily selling hamburgers, chicken, french fries, breakfasts and soft drinks. More recently, it also offers salads, fruit, snack wraps, and carrot sticks.
The business began in 1940, with a restaurant opened by siblings Dick and Mac McDonald in San Bernardino, California.
Their introduction of the "Speedee Service System" in 1948 established the principles of the modern fast-food restaurant.
The present corporation dates its founding to the opening of a franchised restaurant by Ray Kroc, in Des Plaines, Illinois on April 15, 1955, the ninth McDonald's restaurant overall. Kroc later purchased the McDonald brothers' equity in the company and led its worldwide expansion.
With the successful expansion of McDonald's into many international markets, the company has become a symbol of globalization and the spread of the American way of life. Its prominence has also made it a frequent topic of public debates about obesity, corporate ethics and consumer responsibility.

888 Cafe, Kota Damansara

888 Cafe is located at 1 Jalan PJU 5/10, Dataran Sunway in Kota Damansara.
Tel: +603 6141 6560
Meal cost 41 bucks, and was OK ... but I do like the feel of the cafe! I think what skewed my mind, was the fact that the Hainanese Chicken Chop had BROWN GRAVY and not the sweet-n-sour which I am accustomed (and love!) to. The Otak-Otak and Kaya Toast was really good though, but I found the Peranakan Set a trifle bit too hot (spicey)! The Soya Bean Cincau aka Michael Jackson was dissapointing though, as the soya bean was NOT home-made but instead it was a Drink-ho canned soya bean, grrrr!

Maserati off the NKVE

The unmistakeable 'boomerang tail-lights' caught my attention of the NKVE, Damansara exit ... yes, it was a Maserati 3200GT. But what a TOSSER the driver was, weaving in and out of traffic with little regard of anyone's safety. And he wasn't even of the Muslim faith, I thought initially he was in a rush to get home to buka puasa ... Grrrrr!

Wikipedia notes ... The Maserati 3200 GT was an automobile produced by Maserati from 1998 to 2001. The luxury coupé was styled by Italdesign, whose founder and head Giorgetto Giugiaro previously designed, among others, the Ghibli, Bora and Merak.
The most remarkable design detail were the tail-lights, consisting of LEDs arranged in the shape of boomerang. The car was replaced in early 2002 by the similarly designed Maserati Coupé, when Maserati returned to the US market. The original "boomerang" tail-lights were replaced because they did not meet US requirements for night-driving visibility.
Hmm, maybe the guy was in a rush home as it was getting dark, and he was afraid people couldn't see his car on the road!

Yippee Bubble Tea from SS2

Take-away order of the delicious Lychee with Nata D'Coco drink from Yippee of SS2 ... Very refreshing! About RM$6.90.
Check out the following link for directions and even more wonderful drinks -

Yook Tho Yin, Damansara Utama

Yummy dinner at ... Yook Tho Yin, 13 Jalan SS21/37, Damansara Utama, PJ
Tel: +603 7729 6534
All this good food (and pleasant customer service) for only 35 bucks ... pity the To-fu with Minced Pork was a let down, it had to be re-cooked as the first time round it was so bland!
Oops.. they forgot to add the 'cheong' (Sausage), so it had to be sent back and 'reloaded' :-) Delicious roast meats at this D.Utama joint.

The Singapore Fried Meehoon and Siong Tong Yuen Choy was equally good!

Here's the to-fu when it first arrived ... and after it was sent back to be 'topped up with flavour'!

KTZ desserts at SS2

A return visit... KTZ aka The Fruitti Stall ... 22 Jalan SS2/63, Petaling Jaya
Telephone: +603 7877 2499

Ice Fruit Loh and Black Sesame broth ... Yum!

Esquire Kitchen, Atria Shopping Centre (PJ)

Esquire Kitchen has been around as far as I remember (The days of my parents taking me there ... now I take them!) ... Went to the outlet (Tel: +603 7729 6563) in Atria Shopping Centre, Damansara Jaya, last night. Service was rather poor, lots of shouting by the waiters and waitresses at each other, and there was at least a 10 minute wait between the first dish arriving (Brinjal - YUMMY!) and the next dishes!

Anyway, on to the good stuff ... I love the food! Homely, comfort szechuan and shanghainese dishes ... Old Cucumber double-boiled soup, Pork stir-fried with sengkuang (The stuff that goes in popiah, it seems), the Man Taus which go so well with the before-mentioned brinjals with minced pork, and the piece de resistance ... Fried Wantons with Sweet and Sour Sauce (which had shrimps and minced chicken in it too, so nice!) , and a meal at Esquire Kitchen would not be complete without their 'signature' Cha Chiang Mien.
Other super dishses that I normally have, but didn't order this time ... Xiu Long Bao , Wor Tip and Tong Poh Yoke.
Thanx for the treat, Map :-)

Rainbow Palace ... Exquisite piggy dinner, KL

Cheik and family invited us to Rainbow Palace in Kuala Lumpur this week ... exquisite! Quite possibly, I rank this as my FAVOURITE chinese restaurant in town ... Why? Check out the meal below!

For a previous review which includes directions, please refer to ... Mmmmmmmmh!

Starters
Even the bits and pieces of appetisers on the table, pre-dinner were yummy ... the steamed peanuts, and the ikan bilis in XO sauce.
The actual 'starters' came on a wooden boat, and it includes various deep-fried seafoods, white-fish, tempura prawns, and other bits and pieces of yummy stuff.

Here is our merry gang ... we occupied two tables, and had plenty to drink.

The masterpiece ... The pig. Roast piggy stuffed with yam glutinous rice, EXQUISITE! The bones and spare parts were deep fried with salt and pepper, damn good too.

The other dishes were just as good .. Excellent double boiled chicken soup (the chicken came off the bone, and when it is dipped in soya sauce, simply marvelous) ... Yong Tau Foo in black bean sauce, another one of Rainbow's signature dishes ... Steamed fish in superior Soya sauce ... Yam-soup ... And for afters, we were served Yellow bean and Chesnut broth , followed by Shanghai pancakes.

A meal here is never complete without a drink or three ... Yammmmmm sennnnnnnnnng! Chivas, Macallan and Wolf Blass Merlot.

Here's a rare shot of the chef ... having a drink with us! He da man!

Rainbow over Port Klang

On the way home yesterday, brought a smile to my face ....

Droooooolicious BMW spotted

BMW 335 Ci Coupe (2007)

Whats hot? The way this E92 looks!
Spotted one upclose for the first time ... Atria shopping mall carpark, Damansara Jaya, drooooool!

Whats even hotter? What is hidden under the bulging bonnet!

Twin-Turbo Inline Six-Cylinder Engine
The most powerful engine within BMW's wide range of inline six driving machines that does not wear an "M" badge is the new BMW 335i Coupe. This brand-new version develops maximum output of 300 bhp in US-spec from 3.0 liters and generates peak torque of 300 lb-ft for powerful acceleration in any situation.
The combination of turbocharging and direct gasoline fuel injection offers a new dimension to efficient dynamics. Featuring high-precision fuel injection, the engine boasts a highly sophisticated and advanced direct fuel injection system. This new high-performance engine gives the light, aerodynamically sculpted Coupe truly outstanding acceleration and flexibility on the road.
The twin turbo powerplant in the BMW 335i Coupe develops its power and performance much more spontaneously than a turbocharged engine of conventional design. Thanks to their lower inertia, the two small turbochargers build up pressure much faster than a single, large turbocharger, thus eliminating even the slightest turbo "lag".
To enhance the engine efficiency to an even higher level, the turbochargers are made of a particularly heat-resistant material which makes them immune to high exhaust gas temperatures in the interest of a fuel-efficient combustion process particularly under full load. As a result, the twin turbo technology in the BMW 335i Coupe represents a significant achievement in terms of both performance and fuel economy. The advantages over a conventional turbocharged engine are not only clearly measurable, but also easy to feel on the road.

Coco loves papayas!

The mischievious wonderdog really loves papayas!

Fish, Chicken and Cabbage at home .. delicious!

Sunday dinner prepared by Yanna in my family home ... simply yummy.
EXCELLENT fei-chau cheong-steamed fish, DELICIOUS braised chicken with mushrooms, and simple but SUPERB white cabbage with prawns.

Seremban Siu Pao & Homi Curry Puff, SS2

A really good coffeeshop at SS2, in Petaling Jaya ... Home of Homi Curry Puff (the guy's business is incredible, non-stop stream of customers as I awaited by char kuay teow - over 20 minutes, continuously!) ... Seremban Siu Pao (Superb!) ... and rather good Robert Penang Char Kuay Teow too (Not as good as Section 17's, but still good!).
So the verdict ...
Homi Curry Puff : I have to say that IKEA's is actually better, as the Homi one has too much curry-powder / overpowering in taste, the pastry is rather good though.
Kuay Teow (Robert-style) : I prefer the one at Section 17 (Say Huat coffeeshop)
Seremban Siu Pao : Consistent across most shops, this is really good

Chun Yip coffeeshop, Puchong (Really yummy!)

Chun Yip coffeeshop, 20 Jalan Merak 4a, Bandar Puchong Jaya, 47100 Puchong
The pan-mee was simply amazing ... really tasty minced pork and well marinated mushrooms accompanied the pan-mee which had a beautiful texture ...
The curry laksa mee-hoon was so delicious too ...
And the chee cheong fun was rather good as well.
Washed all this down with some hot barley which was good ... All in all, what a breakfast place! Gotta return again ... SOON!

Green bean dessert at Seapark, PJ

Went to the corner lot coffeeshop in Seapark, on the road behind Soo Kee Chicken, for dessert ... and it certainly didn't dissapoint. EXCELLENT green-bean dessert, smooth / not very sweet / full of green-beans.
However, 2 other dishes caught our eye, and I got to try the rice-cake with choy-poh (mmmmmmmh!) as well as the Ipoh Kai See Hor Fun (also good!).

Fishball (Teow Chew 60s) in Seapark, PJ

" No preservatives ... No boric acid ... Non-halal " was the mantra on the wall , it certainly TASTED healthy ... Really enjoyed this simple dinner last night.
Good fish-balls, nice home-made noodles 'kon loh' style, excellent fish-cakes, and nice fried fish-bits. All in all, YUMMY! The Foo-Chuk Yee Mai was good to wash it all down as well.

Economy Rice ... finest? *Directions updated*

Possibly one of the best Chap Fan (Economy Rice) I have ever eaten ... Ta-powed from Section 17 in PJ , there was cabbage / egg with chinese sausage / chicken in shao-xing sauce ... Tasted like home cooked food!
Directions from The Map -Address is Jalan 17/1A, facing Philips Malaysia. The tiny little operation is by a small side entrance located behind a workshop. You'd see a little hawker umbrella and a table.... thats her shop! Its easy to find, just after 'Klinik KOK'.

Tim Sum at Ho Choong Tuck, Damansara

Ho Choong Tuck is located at Damansara Uptown ... a simple, quick timsum breakfast!
Pei-tan-sau-yoke porridge, Hor-yip glutinous rice, Spring roll, Siu mai, Brinjal and Char siew pao were all OK ... nothing to shout about, but still a decent breakfast.

Seng Kee Noodles at Petaling Street

Seng Kee - The legendary noodle joint on Petaling Street
Some directions from Miss Map ... Look for Puduraya / Angkasa Hotel, then Nando's ... turn left. You are on Jalan Sultan. Voila, you are there!
Loh Shue Fun (Claypot Noodles with minced pork, and raw egg) - Simply delicious!
Siu Yoke Meen (Roast Pork kon-loh noodles) - This is the signature dish, but alas I only found it to be good. Hardly 'creme de la creme' ... Alas!

Euro Deli

Euro Deli is located at Damansara Kim aka SS20, which is between Uptown PJ and Taman Tun.
Add: 41, Jalan SS20/11, Damansara Kim, 47400 PJ
Tel: +603 7726 7495
They have other branches too...
(1) 29, Jln Yap Kwan Seng, KL (Tel: +603 2162 6991)
(2) 401, Jln Burmah, Pulau Tikus, 10250 Penang (Tel: +604 226 1687)
The theme of the shop is 'Sausage King', and I enjoyed the 'deli'-feel of the place. To start, we had Buonofresh orange+strawberry juice, which was yummy. Then came the focaccia rolls , which were fresh and warm, so delish! For mains, we shared:
i) Salmon carbonara spaghetti (Very good, creamy)
ii) Vienna chicken with potato rosti (Best dish we had!)
iii) Sausages coated in honey-glaze (Not bad...)

Out of fuel ... nearly!

Oh oh ... computer shows Range = 0 km ... No fuel left!
I was already out of fuel at Shah Alam on the NKVE ... but decided to 'go' for the Damansara fuel stop anyway!

Royal Yacht Club, Port Klang ... Buka Puasa

Work Buka Puasa dinner tonight ...

Yau Cha Kuay, Chow Yang (SS2)

Yau Cha Kuay ... Mmmmmh!
A delightful little stall in Chow Yang section of SS2, Petaling Jaya ... Damn good! (But be prepared to queue, its really popular ... located just up the road from Chow Yang restaurant, on the row behind Kayu Nasi Kandar)

Sweet and Sour Pork ... the best! Chow Yang, SS2

Another visit to Chow Yang in PJ's SS2 :-) The sweet and sour pork is simply the best! So good that this time we ordered the 'LARGE' size (last time it was 'Medium').

The Honey Pork with Peanuts is also a real treat , but I didn't quite like the Thai-style Chicken. The french beans with har-mai (Dried shrimos) and To-fu in Soya sauce were yummy too! I do like this restaurant VERY VERY much, good food!

Tuesday, October 02, 2007

Ribena Ice Blend, Murni Mamak in SS2 (PJ)

Special stop-over at Murni in SS2 (Petaling Jaya) ... just to have its famous RIBENA ICE BLEND . Turned out too sweet today, and not enough nata-de-coco and watermelon pieces inside! But still refreshing ... approx. $4 for a 'Medium' (BEWARE! Its huge!!).

Restoran Ho Fun , noodles at SS2 (PJ)

Located in the Chow Yang area of SS2 in Petaling Jaya ... same row as the famous Kayu Nasi Kandar. Decided to give this restaurant a go, as it was so quiet ... Seem to be 'giving a chance' for quieter restaurants to WOW me these days! Have to admit, it was rather good. I still prefer the 'original' stuff in Ipoh, but this was good enough :-) for dinner!
Restoran Ho Fun, SS2 (Chow Yang) ... Tel: +603 7877 1878
Total came up to $63.

(1) Drinks ... Soya Cincau, Fruit Juices, Lor Hon Koh were acceptable
(2) Ipoh Hor Fun in soup ... Soup wasn't tasty enough, the noodles were quite smooth though.
(3) Curry Chicken Ipoh Hor Fun ... I preferred this, though it was a little too thick.
(4) Pak Cham Choi-Yuen Kai (Steamed kampung chicken) ... Not bad!
(5) Beansprouts Ipoh-style ... Yummy! Nice and crunchy.
(6) Fried Meatballs ... HIGHLIGHT! Very good!
(7) Sui-Kao (Dumplings) ... Good too!

Sri Pinang Nyonya & Thai food, Shah Alam

Sri Pinang Restoran (Nyonya - Thai) : 12 Jalan Utas D/15D, Shah Alam.
Tel: +603 5510 8687
Kerabu mango ($8 - too sour),
Nyonya Fried Rice ($7 - so, so!),
Singapore Meehoon ($6 - good!), and
Honey Chicken ($13 - pricey, but tasty!)
For drinks ... Lychee with Lime ($3.20).

Chow Yang in SS2, PJ

Chow Yang restaurant in the 'Chow Yang' area of SS2, on the row behind Kayu Nasi Kandar.
Add: 135, Jalan SS2/6, 47300 Petaling Jaya
Tel: +603 7877 3850 or +6012 321 5612

Best Sweet and sour pork ($15) ever? Quite possibly!
The Honey Pork Ribs (Mak Chee Pai Kuat $15) was exquisite as well ... also enjoyed the Tofu with Aubergine ($12), and French Beans with Har-Mai ($10).
Not cheap though, cost nearly 70 ringgit for the 4 of us, but we did have the 'king of teas' Char Wong ($8) to wash it all down.
