Supper at Flo, Equatorial Hotel

Flo, Equatorial Hotel
Along Jalan Sultan Ismail, KL
An eclectic selection of food to accompany Mia Palencia's set ... from Italian , to Malaysian , washed down with some fine reds and whites (and one glass of Lychee Martini). Overall, everything (namely the Salmon, the pastas, assam laksa, and nasi lemak) was good ... but what stood out was the CREME DE LA CREME pizza!

Mia Palencia and Roger Wang at Flo, Equatorial Hotel

Saturday night till late, 30th June 2007
Double Take ... Mia Palcencia & Roger Wang
Flo Lobby Lounge, Equatorial Hotel

Double Take, consisting of Mia-Germain Palencia, a 22-year old vocalist, and Roger Wang, a 32-year old acoustic guitarist, is a firm believer in simplicity. With nothing more than a guitar and a voice, the duo presents their music in minimalist arrangements, with Wang expertly handling everything guitar-related, from the bass lines to the chords to the percussive bits, while Palencia grabs attention through her invitingly rich vocals that bring to mind a young Ella Fitzgerald.

Roger describes the history of this Summer Jazz Series III ... "Back in 2005, Equatorial Hotel was interested in incorporating some live music into Flo. So they came up with the Summer Jazz Series idea. Chris Moore of Equatorial contacted us about this. He worked with us before at Concorde Hotel when we did a one-week gig there in 2001. He brought his GM to come check us out at a gig that we were doing. Right after that, they decided that we were the right act for the first Summer Jazz Series. That turned out very good. I guess that's the main reason why we came back for the second one and now the third."

Juliansi.blogspot.com says ... Mia has the voice of an angel and a repertoire to match, great presence on stage and she is versatile enough to switch between Sting to Paul McCartney and blues and jazz, simply MAGNIFIQUE! Roger is the perfect partner, and his mastery of the guitar is apparent ("Magical fingers!"). There were times when I swore there were 2 guitarists in him!

The magnificent duo...

Golf at KGPA, near Mont Kiara

30th June 2007 - Round of golf with Soo Ka, Gary, Nelson .. and on my flight, Cheik and Janet.
Kelab Golf Perkhidmatan Awam (KGPA) is known as Malaysia's SECOND hardest golf course! Not the friendliest of Course Marshalls, so beware when playing here ... and make sure you wear a BELT too. Yes, I kid u not!

Red Ginger, Damansara Heights

Lunch, 30th June 2007
Service doesn't begin with 'Huh!? ... Indifferent and aloof service, but the food was OK. I do not appreciate restaurants that do not greet their clients with a cheery GOOD MORNING first thing in the morning!
Otak - Yummy, Kuay Teow Soup - noodles were too firm, possibly not 'fresh' but dried noodles rehydrated, Kum Heong Noodles were good, and Belachan Fried Rice was too 'wet' - I prefer my fried rice DRY). Highlight was the drink, Calamansi (Kut Chye) with Pomello, highly refreshing!

Devi's Corner, Sri Hartamas (KL)

Devi's Corner, Sri Hartamas
Average food ... Maggi Mee Goreng, Roti Canai, Nasi Lemak. And overly sweet Teh Ais Kurang Manis.

Zeta Bar ... Up close and personal with Too3K

29th June 2007
Return to Zeta Bar at KL Hilton ...
Sinead Henderson was born in Coventry, England in 1980. Her parents originally from Scotland moved back up there when Sinead was aged eleven. It was then that Sinead developed her love of singing.
Corey Tennant was born in Coventry, England in 1974. Having worked in clubs in the UK as an upcoming DJ he was offered work in Europe. He then settled in Spain where he began his singing career.
Stuart Marlow was born in Birmingham, England in 1974. At the age of sixteen he left England for Spain where his singing career began.
Ps. That's Ka with Karl Auger (ze drummer) and Daryn Karaitiana (on the bass).

Curry Mee and Assam Laksa, Restoran Sky (Setapak, KL)

28th June 2007
Suppertime, post-tennis game ... This Setapak joint is frequented by Uni TAR students. The Curry Mee and Assam Laksa was not out of the ordinary, but the Kon Loh Curry Mee was a little better. My favourite? Had to be the Kat Chai Suin Mui with 100-Plus (Thanks Cheik!).

Tis the season of Wimbledon ...

Restoran Khalifah, Section 3 (Shah Alam) ... Great Sup Ayam!

Always a yummy choice ... Dad's and my favourite Sup Ayam :-) The murtabak kambing was pretty good too! Other good choices include the Popodums, Mutton Curry (laced with Opium I believe ... it's that addictive) and Ayam Masak Merah.

Curry Chicken & best Coconut juice ever!

Yanna makes a truly delicious curry chicken, this time with a tad less Santan, for health reasons! The fried ikan bilis with salted fish is truly inviting! And the Omelette was good as well. Who's in the HALL OF FAME - The home-grown coconut, sweeter then sugar, with refreshing coconut dissected bits. Mum reckons best coconut ever, and it is right in our doorsteps .. Bliss!

Chap Fan (Economy Rice), Champagne Coffee Shop (Shah Alam)

Lunch at this establishment in Section 15, Shah Alam, (Yes, the kopi tiam is called CHAMPAGNE!) usually consists of FRIED GLASS NOODLES (TUNG FUN), along with SPECIAL TOFU. However, on this occassion, I tried the Chap Fan aka Economy Rice instead. I especially liked the Fried Egg with Baked Beans. The Roast Chicken and Siu Yoke (Roast Pork) was indifferent.

Mini Mafia ... The Original

Gotta love this car ... it belongs to one of my colleagues!

Terengganu .. Funny sights!

Some sights from Terengganu ...
That Satria's EXHAUST is so big, I am not sure if it can move!
Maya Karin (Actress - VJ - Singer) in a tudung ... I have never seen her in this state of dress any where else!
ps. A search on 'tudung' in Wikipedia ...
'''Hijab''' or ħijāb (حجاب) is the Arabic term for "cover" (noun), based on the root حجب meaning "to veil, to cover (verb), to screen, to shelter"
In some Arabic-speaking countries and Western countries, the word hijab primarily refers to women's head and body covering, but in Islamic scholarship, hijab is given the wider meaning of modesty, privacy, and morality.
[1] The word used in the Quran for a headscarf or veil is khimār.

Breakfast at Kuala Terengganu ... Non halal!

Breakfast upon arrival at Kuala Terengganu ... 6.45am, 22nd June 2007
Food was nothing to rave about, but what suprised me was the existence of a CHINATOWN in K.Terengganu! Breakfast consisted of Kaya Toast, Char-siew Pao, and Loh Mai Kai.

Mamak supper, Stevens Corner (Old Klang Road)

Supper before heading off to Redang ... 1am, 22nd June 2007
This perenial favourite had humble beginnings, but 'Steven' is now one of the biggest single mamak restaurants I have ever been to. Roti Telur, Roti Bakar 'Steven style', Maggi Mee Goreng, and Satay ... all good!

Hai Peng Kedai Kopi, Kemaman (Terengganu)

24th June 2007
One of Malaysia's most famous coffee outlets ... Hai Peng in Kemaman.
Vietnamese style brewed black coffee was delicious ... But I didn't quite enjoy the 'popular' Kaya Toast at this place. The propietor was very pleasant though.

Crocs footwear

Crocs ... sweeping the nation! I see more and more folk customizing their trendy Croc footwear with Jibbitz too :-)
Very comfy, airey, and best of all seriously non-slip, great for watersports and diving!

Crocs.com ... It all started when three Boulder, Colorado based founders decided to develop and market an innovative type of footware called Crocs™ shoes
Originally intended as a boating/outdoor shoe because of its slip-resistant, non-marking sole. By 2003 Crocs had become a bona-fide phenomenon, universally accepted as an all purpose shoe for comfort and fashion.
From 2003-2004 Crocs focused on accommodating our remarkable growth while maintaining control. We expanded our product line, added warehouses and shipping programs for speedy assembly and delivery, hired a senior management team and acquired Foam Creations. Today, Crocs are available all over the world and on the internet as we continue to significantly expand all aspects of our business.
Despite our rapid success, we still stand behind to the core values of Crocs Footwear. We are committed to making a lightweight, comfortable, slip-resistant, fashionable and functional shoe that can be produced quickly and at an affordable price to our customers.

Longan with Lemon

Yummy home made dessert ... :-) Nice blend of sweet longans with tangy lemon bits. Very refreshing!

Stuffed Crab, Kemaman (Terengganu)

Tong Juan Famous Stuffed Crab, Kemaman in Terengganu
24th June 2007
Post-diving trip makan at Kemaman, which is famous for stuffed crab ... and Tong Juan did not dissapoint. Great texture, nice taste, all for 7 bucks a crab. So good, I even ta-powed 4 home for mum and dad! The tiger prawn was juicy, succulent and cooked beautifully in garlic as well, came up to about 15 bucks a prawn. Super fried-rice, and stir fried spinach had plenty of 'flame' as well (aka was cooked in a VERY hot wok, yummy!).

Redangkalong ... Just chillin'

Redangkalong is located on Pulau Redang, and is operated by the delightful team of A.B, Sharon, Tim and Ah Siang. First day weather that greeted me was TORRENTIAL RAIN ... but that soon stopped, and it was time to DIVE DIVE DIVE!

Always look forward to breakfast, lunch, tea and dinnertime ... especially the BBQ lamb on BBQ nights :-)

SURPRISE! Bumped into Richard when I was there for my 3 day - 2 night trip. Managed to do 2 dives on Friday, and 3 day dives + 1 night dive on Saturday. That photo below is Mike, a divemaster trainee, at the tender age of 17!

Here's Ah Siang and A.B doing the dive briefings, and Richard going out for his Sunday dive ...

It's always worth the 1,000km round-trip journey from KL to Kuantan - Kuala Terengganu - Merang and back to KL!

Redangkalong ... Diving

Weekend diving at Redangkalong in Pulau Redang22nd and 23rd June 2007

Love them Redang-Nemo's ... oops, Clown Fish!

Cramp Removal Ah Siang style!

Various critters at Che Isa, Mak Chantek, Paku Kechil, South Point et al ... Including the venomous Demon Stinger which practically 'walks' on the seabed, cool!

All divers love Ah Siang :-) This marks Lady Leg's return to diving after an aggravated injury, welcome back! Check out Siang deploying the Safety Sausage, oops... the line wasn't 10m long!

Only managed to squeeze in ONE night dive this trip ... but it was a good one. Saw a cute BOXFISH at Tim Reef :-)
Juliansi.Blogspot.com on his 75th dive ...

Tongkat Ali ... Misai Kuching ... Is this really coffee?

I was given a pack of this 'special coffee' ... duh, I still have it under wraps. Not sure if I dare drink it! Hahaa....

What the heck is Tongkat Ali?
Wikipedia speaks ...
Eurycoma longifolia Jack (aka, Tongkat Ali or Pasak Bumi) is a flowering plant in the family Simaroubaceae, native to Indonesia and Malaysia.
Eurycoma longifolia has become popular for its alleged testosterone-enhancing properties. It has therefore been included in some herbal supplements for bodybuilders. Historically, it has been used by the folk medicine in its countries of origin as a libido enhancer and to treat various sexual dysfunctions. Numerous scientific studies performed by Malaysian scientists suggest that it enhances sexual characteristics and performance in animal models.

Misai Kuching (Orthosiphon Stamineus) is a medicinal herb found mainly throughout South East Asia and tropical Australia. It is believed to have antiallergic, antihypertensive, antiinflammatory and diuretic properties. It is used as a remedy for arteriosclerosis (capillary and circulatory disorders), kidney stones, diabetes and nephritis.
What particularly shocks me is that I found the above from http://www.misaikucing.com/ Good Grief!

Man Tou & Coco the Wonderdog Guard

25th June - Came back to Shah Alam one lunch time, and found Coco the Wonderdog guarding some man-tous ... which I promptly ta-powed (YUM! Just the right texture and taste!) , after giving her a belly-rub!

Pineapple ... Hall of Fame

25th June 2007
Delicious pineapple from dad's mate ... Simply divine! Juicy, sweet, refreshing and full of natural pineapple flavour ... a treat to the senses!

Wan Tan Mee, Trendy Station (Klang)

Trendy Station Coffee Shop, Bukit Tinggi (Klang)

Dinnertime, 25th June - Always a consistent choice ... Wan Tan Mee (Both the Dry aka Kon-Loh, and Wet / Soup variety) at Trendy Station.
The Lobak is average, but I do enjoy Taiwanese Sausage once in a while ... this portion wasn't cheap, cost $13.

Las Carettas, Mexican food at USJ

24th June 2007
A mexican restaurant in the heart of USJ? You bet!
Add: 14, Jalan USJ10/1E, Subang UEP, Selangor
Tel: +603 737 3058
I remember fondly my previous visit to this place, which was actually Dave and Rhona's Farewell . Still as yummy as ever!

HALL OF FAME - The soups are incredible. Possibly the best CREAM OF MUSHROOM and OXTAIL SOUP you will ever enjoy!
CREME DE LA CREME - Beef ribs ... Great bbQ sauce, and tender juicy ribs.
Other makan ... Complementary nachos with a very spicey dip , anda Mixed chicken & beef Fajitas (Found them to be rather dry, but the accompanying sauces and veges were good)
And to wash it all down, a bloody large glass of Margerita, full-strength!
The verdict? An excellent eatery with knowledgable and friendly service ... WELL WORTH A VISIT!

Ms Read launch in BV2, Bangsar

8pm ... 20th June 2007
Cool launch, and very funky music in BV2 !

Delicious by Ms Read, Bangsar

20th June 2007

Delicious by Ms Read is at Bangsar Village II ... BV2
Truly yummy Beef Burger with a fantastic sambal dressing on the side ... Good angelhair pasta with salmon and caviar ... And equally good Wagyu Steak Pie. Portion of chips was huge!

Fried rice ... Hailam Port Klang

Lunch with the guys, 20th June 2007
Simply excellent .. Love the fried rice from this simple village joint! The green-chillis are a divine accompaniment! Refer to my previous Blog review on this joint for directions ... Well worth a visit, especially when it cost RM$15 for the 3 of us!

Port Klang Village seafood

Work lunch ... 19th June 2007

Popular seafood place in the 'esplanade' area of Port Klang, by the water front ... good Oyster Omellette, EXCELLENT curry-fish, kangkung belacan, chicken in spicey sauce (signature dish!) and the lime-kasturi juice is always refreshing!

Nasi Lemak, Bukit Tinggi

Suppertime ... 18th June 2007
$1.50 ... can't go wrong with this spicey Nasi Lemak, from Bukit Tinggi in Klang. As far as I know, they are open late ... very late.

Zeta Bar

Always a good night out ... KL Hilton's Zeta Bar.
ps. That's a vodka orange aka Screwdriver ... drinks at Zeta are always well mixed.

Click below for a recollection of the previous time I watched this excellent 'cover' band ...
Too3K performance blog

Wang Chiew, SS2 in PJ ... Best Tai-Chow ever?

17th June 2007 ... HAPPY FATHER'S DAY, Dad!
My family's favourite Tai Chow ('big fry') to date ... Excellent! So good that my mum gave it her THUMBS UP :-)
The dishes we enjoyed for a reasonable $144 were ... Prawn deep-fried in Nestum batter, Stir fried spinach (So good that we ordered this dish TWICE!), Pai Kuat / Pork ribs 'wong' (EXCELLENT!), To-fu Curry (YUMMY MAXIMUS!), Ginseng Chicken (Good), Ha Koh / Crayfish in Butter-batter (FANTASTIC!), Longan and Sea-coconut Dessert (Refreshing!), and to accompany it all ... Really excellent Fried Rice with green-beans and lap-cheong. Simply DIVINE! Great Tai-Chow! Best ever? Quite probably...

Homi Curry Puff and Siew Pao, SS2

Snack time ... 17th June
Homi Chicken Curry Puff ... 66, Jalan SS 2/66, 47 300 Petaling Jaya

I have heard about this legendary Curry Puff, but boy was I impressed ... excellent (Truly beautiful, flaky but not too thin) pastry, and great contents of chicken curry and potatoes too. And to top it all off, you can get Seremban Siu Bao at the store next door!

Kon Loh Mee at Hung Kee, Loke Yew (KL) ... Shoot-out at D'Boss?

Lunchtime, 17th June 2007
Always excellent, this institution serves the best Kon Loh Mee in Kuala Lumpur ... I tried seating on the non-air conditioned side of the restaurant on this particular visit, and found it to be more 'rustic' and authentic, then on the cooler side!
Click on my previous Hung Kee Blog for directions and a map.

You know them sirens I heard when I was a the divine Loke Yew Prawn Mee? I guess they were from .... Here are some pix of a police incident on the way to Loke Yew that morning. Hmm, intriguing? Didn't slow down my Kon Loh Mee / Breakfast though!

Prawn Mee in Lorong Loke Yew, KL ... Best of the best!

Simply divine ... Truly an eye-watering experience! This deserves a prime place in my Hall of Fame! The broth is full bodied, with lots of prawn-y flavour, the prawns are fresh, as is the pork ... Noodles perfectly formed, and just firm enough.

Sisters Char Kuay Teow, Lam Heng Cafe in Penang

16th June 2007
One of Malaysia's most famous CKT (Char Kuay Teow) stalls .. Sisters CKT in MacAlister Road, Penang. However, they must have had a slightly off-day, as I didn't find it as good as the first time I visited. Nevertheless, still very good. Be prepared to wait though, they are usually VERY BUSY!

Other specialities in this coffeeshop include Woo Tau Koh (Yam Cake) which is REALLY EXCELLENT, and I love the tangy Mee Jawa too! Try the Lobak too, it's excellent! I was just too stuffed on this visit ... could hardly finish the CKT + Mee Jawa + Woo Tau Koh!

Assam Laksa and Lobak at Lok Pin Cafe, Penang

Lunchtime ... 16th June 2007
It wouldn't be a complete trip to Penang without having their 'home-grown' ASSAM LAKSA PENANG STYLE, and Uncle Gan said this was the best ... he certainly was right!

Beautiful noodles, very fine ingredients, stupendous thick broth with lots of fish bits in a succulent flavour, which was brought to life by the Har Koh (that's the one in the squeezy bottle ... what a novel way of serving this 'shrimp paste'!)

Unfortunately, the LOBAK was a real let down. Too 'flour-ey', and the sauce was just weak and poor. Stick to the one at Sister's Char Kuay Teow aka McAllister Road.

I didn't try the other dishes, but they looked OK ... Curry Mee and Lor Mee.
Ps. That's Stan trying to get directions to a 'proper' Lobak place, which was located near the E&O.

Swatow Lane Ice Kacang ... New World Park, Penang

16th June 2007
Things sure have changed since my first visit to this Institution back in October 2006 ... It has now moved into a swanky, clean, well ventilated hawker centre! Have to say the quality was maintained, and its as good as ever :-) Make sure you get the banana topping, it's worth the 50 cents, I love the contrast in textures between the crushed ice, the green bits of cendol, the kidney beans and the gooey bananas!
Ps. An adjacent stall serves pastries ... Found the Cream Puff to be average, I much prefer Papa Beard ... but the Cinnamon roll is EXCELLENT! Didn't manage to take a photo before that was all finished :-)

Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendol ... Simply the Best!

Penang's finest ... Post-breafast on 16th June
This is perhaps Penang's finest ... I remember fondly my first trip
to this establishment, and it was EQUALLY incredible this time round!

After ordering, we were quickly ushered further down this back alley, into a delightful old-school decorative shoplot ... which turned out to be the 'Dining Room' :-) WOW ... Even Gurmit Singh aka Phua Chu Kang has been here! Guess we were in the company of Greatness!
Little has been left to be said about this divine Chendol ... it's simply The Best.

And here we are ... walking back to Loron McAllister to join the rest of the family. Even ta-powed 2 packets for Tai Yee and 1st Uncle, who promptly whalloped it all! YUMMY!

Lorong Macallister, various famous goodies in Penang

The morning after ... 16th June 2007
Penang is a beautiful island, and I had a great view of the E&O from my hotel ... as well as a view of the Penang Bridge.

Then it was on to a very hearty breakfast ... I loved the fried kuay in dark sauce (Someone let me know the Penang Hokkien name, please!), found the chee cheong fun with har-koh interesting, simply average Kuay Teow Teng (Soup), didn't quite enjoy the bland Penang Curry Mee / Laksa, and enjoyed the Otak Otak. The Otak Otak lady was very interesting, and even gave me a card, that described, "Nyonya Banana Leaf Original Otak @ RM$2 ... Mummy Fang, H/P 017-4710430" She claims to distribute her Otak to placves as far as KL, Johore, Ipoh, and Bukit Mertajam.

Sup Hameed, Penang

15th June 2007 .... After Slippery Senoritas, it must have been 2-ish am. Thanks for the treat, bro!

Add: 48, Jln Penang, Chinatown, Pulau Pinang
Tel: +604 261 8007
Directions: Lonely Planet Malaysia

The soups were rather good, but hardly spectacular ... Sup Ayam, Sup Kambing, Sup Ekor. Shudder ... did not try the Sup Torpedo, as made famous by Anthony Bodaine on his 'No Reservation' series!! Kuay Teow Goreng, Maggi Mee Goreng, Nasi Lemak was average as well.
However ... it was still a great way to end a very special day, with my brothers, his lovely wife and fiancee, and my cousins ... CHEERS!

Slurp...

The "stall" outside the restaurant!

Ps. This place is so famous even Tun Mahathir (our ex-PM) has been here!

Hmmm, food for thought from Wikipedia ... The former Prime Minister has a history of heart attack. He had a coronary artery bypass in 1989. On November 9 2006, he was admitted into Institut Jantung Negara (National Heart Institute) in Kuala Lumpur after suffering a mild heart attack that was caused by a clot in his arteries and has since recovered. On 14 May 2007, Mahathir was admitted to the ICU of a hospital in Langkawi after suffering from breathing difficulties...

Slippery Senoritas, Penang

15th June 2007

Family trip to Penang to celebrate Ester and Gary's big day :-)
Here are photos of the Penang Bridge, some sights around Penang, as well as the delightful Eastern and Oriental 'E&O' where the festivities were held.

Satay at Thean Chun, Ipoh

15th June 2007
Delicious pork satay at Kong Heng - Thean Chun ... where else, but Ipoh!
Pity the 'dad' of this stall has retired, but his son is doing a pretty good job keeping on the 'Yoke Hoi' tradition (That's MOVE IT in Cantonese ... His dad's voice still rings in my ears)

Thean Chun and Kong Heng, Ipoh

No trip to Ipoh would be complete without visiting this institution , which I fondly call KH-TC (Kong Heng - Thean Chun).
Previously featured, with directions, and Creme De La Creme recommendations on 'Best Coffeeshop in Malaysia'! ENJOY!
My personal favourite at this institution has to be the Shredded Chicken Kuay Teow soup noodles ... Exquisite broth, smooth noodles, simply DIVINE!
The Kangkung Belacan with Yau-Yee (Cuttlefish) was well enjoyed by all as well ... and is possibly the best you could find anywhere!

The delicacies served in KH-TC are so good, that the below are only 'so-so', but would be considered excellent just about any where else! Beef Noodles and Popiah.

Ipoh ... Road trip to Penang

15th June 2007
Stop-over at Ipoh on the way up to Penang for Gary's and Ester's big day ... Nathan Cheong sure is crawling fast these days!

Bak Kut Teh in Ban Lee, KL ... And a funny sign!

Bak Kut Teh next door to Dynasty Hotel in KL
Location: Along Jalan Ipoh
13th June 2007
We had the 'Sang Kuat' cut ... The meat was very tender, the rice excellent, but I still prefer Klang Bak Kut Teh! This was just too rich in herbs, more like a rich chinese tonic. Nevertheless, it was highly interesting. Guess I am just set in my ways ...

Ps . Check out this sign which I noticed as I was walking out ... Hee hee!

Maggi Mee goreng, KL

13th June 2007
Ta-powed this from KL last week ... and it was surprisingly yummy!

Thursday, June 14, 2007

Sweetest papayas

These Solo Papayas came from a little organic shop near TJ Haus in Subang Jaya ... Excellent, especially with a squeeze of lime.

Sun Yau Tak Teng , TDDI

Restoran TTDI Utama located in Taman Tun Dr Ismail ... A rather popular Tai-Chao which was quiet on a Friday evening ... strange! Good 'Marmite Prawns', OK 'Pork in Pineapple' and 'Fan Sui Yip' stir-fried.

Ps. SM was back on hols from the UK, and it was good catching up with 'Gentle Giant' Rufus again too! Here are some old pix ...

Kon Loh Mee, Trendy Station in Klang

Surprisingly decent Kon Loh Mee aka Wan Ton Mee from the nearby Trendy Station, Bukit Tinggi (Klang). The Pork Ball soup with Fatt-choy was a good accompaniment too.

Tofu with Mushrooms and Mackarel in Chilli Sauce .. At home!

A simple meal this week ... 12th June 2007
Tofu with mushrooms ... Mackarel in Chilli sauce with yummy large Onions ... Ho-Pao Egg ... Old Cucumber Soup. Yum!

Secret Recipe - Fantastic Lemon Cheese Cake

Exquisite Lemon Cheese Cake - Tangy, but not overly sour, and just sweet enough (especially the one served at Jalan Bangkung, off Bangsar), and decent Caramel Cheese Cake (not much of a fan of the 'nutty' base).
Secret Recipe ... 67 Jalan Bangkung, Bukit Bandaraya, Bangsar, 59100 Kuala Lumpur

Spottings in Shah Alam

As spotted in Shah Alam - Oh oh ... new traffic camera!
And hey, at the same junction, 24 hours later, I spotted my first 'Geely' (Some China made automobile!) ...
And finally, here's a pic of a house near my fave Bak Kut Teh, which is pretty entrepreneurial (Will writing services and Advertising space for rent!).

Bak Kut Teh, Teluk Pulai in Klang

Banana Cream Pie, Just Heavenly (Damansara Heights)

Loved this Banana Cream Pie (Copious amounts of banana lending it a wonderful taste, complimenting the chocolate and cream ... and not sweet! Just the way I like it) ... Due to Gary's big day, didn't have a chance to savour this, and it was STILL EXCELLENT coming out of the fridge after 48 hours :-)
Nigel and Alan's new place ... BRAVO!

Yahoo! is now a restaurant?

Spotted in Bukit Tinggi opposite Satay Kajang ... huh!?

Satay Kajang, Bukit Tinggi Klang

The chicken satay was not as good as the one along the Kesas ... but nevertheless (especially with it being so conveniently accessible to me!) this is rather good . I found the beef satay a tad firm. I especially like the peanut sauce fused with sambal ... Yummy! Fried mee-hoon is rather good as well, but only averagely-presented!
UPDATE! Just realised that this restaurant shares the SAME NAME as the one along the Kesas ... could it be that they are one and the same!? OK ... Need a revisit to the one on Kesas to figure out if it is truly CREME DE LA CREME!

Baskin Robbins ice-cream, Bukit Tinggi Klang

Flavours tried on this visit to family-favourite Baskin Robbins ...
Vanilla (Low-fat hence didn't taste very vannila-ish!) ,
Mango (Too sweet and rich) , and
Strawberry (even has strawberry chunks in it, best of the 3 .. but needs a shoot-out with Haagen Daz's!)
A little more then 5 bucks a scoop which is reasonable considering its' premium-nature!

Happy Village Restaurant, Berkeley Gardens Klang

Happy Village Restaurant is located at the left-hand side of the Federal Highway, near ING-Maybank building, as you drive into Klang town. Overall the food here is ALWAYS good, but I do have a soft-spot for the crab-meat 'sharksfin lookalike' claypot dish, simply EXCELLENT and easily deserving of 'creme de la creme'! Coffee pork chop was good as well, and the chicken dish was average as was the 'a tad too soft' Fan-Sui Yip greens.

Boon Wah Seafood House, Berkeley Gardens Klang

Wednesday dinner, 6th June 2007
Boon Wah is a really old 'signboard' (as we describe in in Cantonese - Basically means that it has been around for a long time) ... I haven't been there since the days we lived in Taman Kenari aka Berkeley Gardens ... and it was great to revisit this place.
The Yellow-Wine chicken was simply divine, wanted to lick the gravy off the serving plate ... The Cray-fish in batter had a little too much of the latter ... the Teo-chew style Pomfret was good (Loved the noodles and soup base which is rather much like 'cha choy soup') and Kai-Lan was fresh. Overall, a return visit is called for!

Jagung soup, Yanna's Curry Chicken + Cha Choy Pork

Home cooked soup of corn - tomatoes - onions , simply divine ... I had 5 bowls! And more of Yanna's exquisite but hot chicken curry 'kapitan' style (With LOTS of ginger) as well as her 'signature' Cha-Choy Pork. HEAVENLY!

Roti tisu & Maggi Mee Goreng, Taj in Subang

Taj Curry House
11 Jln Ss12/1B , Petaling Jaya 47500, Selangor
(actually located across Sheraton, near to the Subang Jaya Medical Centre - SJMC)
Telephone: +603 5633 0574
Average maggi mee goreng, good teh ais ... and interesting Roti Tisu with a smidgen of Kaya. That's a yummy combo!

Windmill - Steak-house in Subang

An old and rather homely steak house located in Subang ... Across the road from SJMC. Food is average, but I like the 'old school' nature of the decor. The steak was over-done, as was the beef, but it was a great value set ... Clam Chowder, Prawn Cocktail, Steak with Lamb on a Hot Plate, scoop of Strawberry Icecream, AND tea as well. The ala-carte French Onion soup, and Nonya Chicken was rather good too. I liked the warm bread-rolls too!

Ipoh ... a couple of sights

Drove past Yik Foong and got a rush of nostalgia ... of the days when I paid 10 bucks to have a cassette tape (Yes.. CASSETTES!) recorded with a bunch of songs, such as 'Rock Me Amadeus' by Falco and 'Cheri Cheri Lady' by Modern Talking, and the like ...

Times certainly have changed ... there are even 'modern kopi tiams' in Ipoh Old Town now, but the business here is no where as bustling as Thean Chun - Kong Hing opposite!

Botanik Restaurant, Klang

Dinner at a local restaurant ... Service was slow, and the food was average. Enjoyed the Fried rice (Though there was a little too much salted fish bits) and Tapioca-leaf stir fried vege. But, the Cha Choy Soup was dissapointingly lacking in flavour (and too much pepper), and the Marmite Pork (was too 'soft', and poor marmite flavour). Damage was RM$31.

Funny Mountain Soya Bean ... Exquisite! Ipoh

This is the BEST soya-bean, and Wen Tziang and I concur on this fact! Simply exquisite ... The smoothness of the Tau Foo Fah is incomparible (especially when one has it Pak-tong-Pak / 'White with White'), simply BRILLIANT! Also enjoyed the Soya-Cincau aka Michael Jackson aka Hak-tong-Pak (Black and White).
If only it was possible to do a side-by-side shootout between ...
Funny Mountain IPOH v Rochor Original Beancurd SINGAPORE !

Very useful information from Sun2Surf.com ...
HISTORY :
THE Tan brothers have been churning out two goodies Ipoh seems to be associated with – soyabean milk and curd – since the early 1950s. Product and service quality have remain unchanged. You can either stop your vehicle in front of the stall, signal a little and the workers will deliver your orders. Or walk to the stall and get your drinks after a short wait.
SPECIALITIES :
(1) Soyabean milk (tau cheong sui). Smooth and thick; one glass is obviously not enough
(2) Soyabean curd (taufu fah). Try mixing it with soyabean milk or cincau
(3) Cincau (lengkong). Try mixing with soyabean
INSIDER TIP aka COURTESY:
If you want to mix soyabean milk with soyabean curd, say "pak pak" (white and white). If you want to mix soyabean and cincau say "hak pak" (black and white). If you want to mix the three, just say, "sam yeong cham" (mix three types). This is to avoid confusion as Tan has to deal with many customers.
LOCATION AND TELEPHONE:
Along Jalan Dato Tahwil Azar, 30300 Ipoh, Perak (near to the Tanjung Rambutan taxi stand)
Tel: +605 546 9968 or +6012 516 1607

Thean Chun and Kong Heng Coffeeshop, Ipoh

A perennial family favourite, and this sentiment is certainly shared with all my friends who visit ... Jack & I reckon this may be the MOST FAMOUS coffeeshop in the country. Care to differ? I will let the photos do the talking ... simply exquisite (Especially the kai-see hor fun / shredded chicken noodles with beansprouts! And the Pork Satay too)
Address: 73 Jalan Bandar Timah (former Leech Street), Ipoh
Directions: The coffee shop in the old part of Ipoh town... If you come in from the new town, turn right at the first junction after crossing the Kinta River... The coffeeshop is on the second block on the left...

Origami .. How to fold a box! Yip & Audrey's Housewarming

As learnt from Yip and Aud's party!

Yip & Audrey's Housewarming, Damansara Perdana

Saturday, 2nd June 2007
Congratulations Yip & Aud on ya really nice new home!

Ipoh home cooked food in KL! Yip & Audrey's Housewarming

The makan photos from Yip and Audrey's Housewarming ... Bravo to the Ipoh chefs who made the trip! Of particular mention ... The Roast Pork (Siew Yoke), supremely delicious, and the Pork Knuckle with Mushrooms and Seafood. Also thoroughly enjoyed Audrey's thai-inspired Kerabu.

Kon Loh Mee (Soup and Dry), Wong Soon Kee (SS14, PJ)

Simple yet delicious Kon Loh Mee (The dry one is good, but the soup one is even better!) ... The secret being the minced pork used, yummy. Also got a variety of meats from the Economy Rice stall ... Sweet and Sour Pork, Marmite Chicken, Tofu etc. All washed down with some Fresh Orange Juice (No sugar, No ice!).
Ps. The Soya Bean stall outside sells LARGE curry-puffs (RM$1.50 a pop), that are really yummy. Love the pastry!

Sarawak Laksa, Bangsar ... Excellent!

Sarawak Laksa ... A truly elusive dish here in Semenanjung. But located at Nam Chuan coffeeshop, 2-4 Lorong Ara Kiri, Lucky Garden, Bangsar.
I believe this laksa is the coconut-less variety, but what make it special is the flavour which is fragrant yet isn't too hot. The garnishing done by this Aunty is truly special, 'hotel quality' I would say. Large prawns used, but only a sprinkle of shredded chicken and egg, which I found rather stingy for 4 bucks! Nevertheless, DAMN GOOD :-)

Steven Gerrard in ... Subang?

The Mighty Red's Gerrard spotted at USJ? Why did he have to $toop $o low? Hmmm...

Daulat Tuanku, the King's birthday today (it's a public holiday here) ...

Meal at home, Shah Alam

A 'simple' meal prepared by Yanna! Delicious dry-curry chicken, and a new dish .. Tofu with minced beans. Excellent as always!
