Redang Kalong - The Resort and The Farewell

Our last day at Redangkalong ... Tuesday, 26th September 2006

I went for a walkabout all over the resort the morning we were due to leave ... Then it was time for Corrie and Ah Siang to wave goodbye to us.

Redangkalong / Divers Den had organised for us to be speed-boated to the mainland (30 minutes), and then we hopped to a van which transferred us from the jetty to Kuala Terenganu Bus Terminal (Another 30 minutes - but that was because I stopped for Lekor and Ciku!).

The Sani Express bus (RM$30) which ferried us back to Kuala Lumpur (Putra, PWTC) departed at 1.30pm, and arrived in KL at 8.45pm... and that was the end of our dive trip. See you again Samantha, Neomi and Bli!

Thean Chun & Kong Heng, Ipoh

Lunch with mum and dad the moment we arrived in Ipoh ...
Saturday, 16th September 2006

This is the mecca of coffee shops in Ipoh, and possibly in Malaysia (only paralleled by PJ's Restoran O&S), and we enjoyed Pork Satay, Chee Cheong Fun, Chicken Hor-Fun (Kai-See), Kangkung & Sotong with Belachan, Yong Tau Foo with Sar Kok. Unfortunately, they were out of their famous CUSTARD on the day, but we were pretty stuffed!

By the way ... The Satay stall (located on the alley between Thean Chun and Kong Heng) used to be run by the 'senior uncle' (who used to shout 'YOKE HUEY' aka "Move It") is now being manned by the son! We asked him, "Where's your dad? Is he retired?", and his reply was "He still comes around some time, but he is at a meeting in Penang today".
DOH! Meeting!? Perhaps he is Lifetime President of S.A.M. (Satay Association of Malaya)?

Kaya from Hai Peng Kopitiam

Hai Peng Kopitiam @ Kemaman, Terengganu

This is reputedly one of the 'famous' kayas of Malaysia, from this very popular shop ... Visited en route back from a trip to Redang. Pity I am NOT a good Kaya Toast Chef ... duh, I will stick with Ya Kun of Singapore or Uncle Lim of Malaysia next time ... Hmm, actually I am due a trip to Old Town White Coffee and their antique cast iron oven (which makes BEAUTIFUL kaya toast!) when I am next in Ipoh (this weekend!).

Hai Peng Kopitiam

ps - SPECIAL MENTION! Mum made some delicious home-made bread ...

Bak Kut Teh ... in Port Klang!

Klang Lek Bak Kut Teh, Port Klang town (Near Billion Supermarket)

We quite often entertain (I am serious!) our guests visiting our company, at Klang Lek Bak Kut Teh in Port Klang ... serves good BKT, with great side dishes, good service, and also the interesting variant 'Dry Bak Kut Teh'.

To paraphrase from another blog which I failed to credit ...
" Dry Bak Kut Teh is a rather recent phenomenon. The biggest difference is, obviously, the lack of the herbal soup in the claypot. The ingredient is also stripped to the basic, basically just pork and some vege (more for the color contrast than anything else,) simmering in the claypot with the sauce that looks alot like dark soya plus diced garlic and chili. "

I have reviewed my BKT meals so many times, but I think it is best described from this Wikipedia entry!

Mandarin / Pinyin: ròug chá
Cantonese: bah-kut-tê
Literal meaning: "pork-rib tea"

Bak kut teh is a Chinese soup concoction popularly served in Malaysia, Singapore and also states of neighbouring countries like Batam of Indonesia and Hat Yai of Thailand.
Generally it is cooked in a clay pot with various parts of the pig, varieties of mushroom, lettuce, and dried tofu sheets or pieces . The soup itself is a broth which consists of several herbs and spices (including star anise, cinnamon, cloves and garlic) boiled together with pork bones for hours. Light and dark soy sauce are also added to the soup during cooking, with varying amounts depending on the variant.
Bak Kut Teh is typically served in a steaming clay pot. Bak kut teh is best eaten with rice, and in Malaysia, it is often served with strips of fried dough called Youtiao 'Yau Cha Kuay' (Literally translates to Oil Fried Ghost!) .
Soy sauce (usually light soy sauce, but dark soy sauce is also offered sometimes) is preferred as a condiment, with which chopped chilli padi and minced garlic is taken together.
Tea of various kinds (the Tieguanyin variety is especially popular in the Klang Valley area of Malaysia) is also usually served in the belief that it dilutes or dissolves the copious amount of fat consumed in this pork-laden dish.
Klang, widely believed to be the home of bak kut teh, is famous for her many restaurants serving the best and tastiest bak kut teh in the region.
Indeed, the dish is reported to have been invented in Port Klang for port coolies there in the early 20th century, to supplement their meagre diet and as a tonic to boost their health.

There are numerous variants of bak kut teh with its cooking style closely influenced by the prevailing Chinese enclave of a certain geographical location. In Singapore, there are three types of bak kut teh...
The Hokkien, who prefer saltier food, use more soy sauce, which results in a darker soup.
The Cantonese, with a soup-drinking culture, add medicinal herbs to create a stronger flavoured soup.
The most common variant is the Teochew style, which uses more pepper in the soup.

A less fatty variation of bak kut teh made with chicken instead of pork is called chik kut teh. It also serves as a halal version of the dish.

Tel No: 03 - 7725 8822
Location : Next to Sri Melaka restaurant, almost to the end / near MPH book shop

Dinner with Keng Han & Whye Mun in this Shanghainese joint ...
Indifferent la-mien (Keng Han's wasn't spicy enough, mine was OK) , didn't try the xiu-long bao (Stan and Debs say it ain't v good!) , rather good crispy duck (sort of like the Aromatic Duck we used to enjoy in the UK!) , so-so almond jelly , the vege (beans with minced pork) was very good , durian fritters were goooooooood (lotsa durian, interlaced with some mango ... sort of like a decadent GORENG PISANG!) ... overall so-so. Moderately expensive at RM$35 per head.

My Kitchen, Hainanese Melaka food @ Sunway Mas

My Kitchen, 26-1, Jalan PJU 1/38, Sunway Mas Commercial Centre, 47301 PJ
Tel : 03-78808726
Opening: Mon - Sun (11 am - 3 pm, 6 pm - 10 pm)

Location: Don't be fooled by the address, Sunway Mas is actually Aman Suria area, just off the NKVE Damansara exit on the righ-hand side.

We had ...
Kampung Chicken with Chicken Rice Ball - Golf ball sized ... rather unique , and good. But the chicken was only average, with not enough 'sweetness'/flavour, and the texture was only average
To-fu with Minced Pork and Sweet Lobak - Quite good...
Hainanese-style Fried Brinjal - Very good, excellent flavour
Kalamansi (Suin-mui) Juice - Strong & refreshing!
And, the piece de resistance ... The restaurant's signature dish, Hainanese Mutton Soup, full of flavour, very strong, "tastes like it has been boiled for 5 days", YUM!

Overall ... Expensive (Nearly RM$90 for 4 of us), but interesting!

ps. Yes, the road names around here are named after ... birds and other creatures that fly!

Bak Kut Teh with Raymond, Adrian, Roy & Ye

Early morning breakfast at the crack of dawn with the guys ... Teluk Pulai Bak Kut Teh, Klang

Today marked the 1st time I have EVER seen Teluk Pulai Bak Kut Teh Restaurant empty! We got to the mecca of BKT at 7am, and ... (1) I couldn't believe it was open , (2) I couldn't believe there were only 2 other tables occupied , (3) I don't know how anyone, or I, could stomach a large pot of Bak Kut Teh at that early hour!

We enjoyed stir-fry yau-mak, with 2 choice cuts / pots of Finest BKT = Kai-peh 'Chicken-thigh' (it really is pork!) & Mmh Fah Yoke '5 flowers' (Raymond's fave!).

Simply delicious ... as always!

Who is Yeong Shang?

Yeong Shang was my Oldham Hall (ACS and ACJC Singapore) buddy from back in 1990-93, who went on to Harvard and Princeton in the USA to pursue his studies. He is now an Astrophyscist, who will soon start his new posting in UCLA. Also happens to be the Manila 2005 SEA Games SILVER MEDALLIST in the Triathlon!

Rainy Saturday & Debenhams

Seems that Debenhams in KL would soon be no more, and MetroJaya would be taking over ... Alas, it is goodbye to another British institution.

Then, it rained cats and dogs in Bangsar ...

Tim Sum at Imbi Palace, KL

Imbi Palace ... 8, Jalan Barat,
Off Jalan Imbi, Kuala Lumpur 55100

Tel: 03-2145 4822

I had waited some months before I had the opportunity today to try the Tim Sum at IMBI PALACE ... Originally recommended by our mate, Thomas, and it certainly did NOT dissapoint. Very fresh, very tasty, good ambience, good service, expensive (nearly RM$40 per head) ... overall, YUM!

We ordered LOTS (11 dishes - Siew Yoke/Roast Pork, Char Siew Pau, Hah Kao, Siu Mai, Egg Tarts, Chee Cheong Fun in XO Sauce, Carrot Cake, Porridge with Century Egg, Soup Dumplings, Thai Fish Cakes and Woo-Kok/Yam pastry) , but the highlight had to be the X-O Chee Cheong Fun and the Kam Pai Siu Yuk (Roast Pork) ... perfect!

I managed to sneak a copy of the Menu out, so click on the below for a high-res breakdown of all the beautiful tim-sums Imbi Palace has to offer.
DOH! There's a JoJo actually served us today!?

A very very very 'international' restaurant!

Check out this 'Food Court' (On the way to University Malaya) ... I have never had the chance to try it, but boy ... if the sign is right, it serves just about everything except Kazakhstanian Stew!

Killiney Kopitiam in SS21 / Damansara Utama

We had breakfast this morning at Killiney Kopitiam (Damansara Utama) ... originally we were just going to 'have a cup of coffee' but it became a mini-breakfast!

I always enjoy the mee-siam here (ala Singapore), but today I found out that the kaya-toast with half boiled-egg set was pretty good too (I do think that Uncle Lim's is still the benchmark)!

Roti Sardine @ Devi's Corner, TTDI

Devi's Corner is located at Jln Datuk Sulaiman, Taman Tun Dr Ismail

After visiting Rush (Eastin Hotel), we wanted to have a 'little' snack at 1.30am ... so we ended up at TTDI, in Devi's Corner (photo of the shop was actually taken a day after in the day-time).

Fried Indomie Goreng (variation of Maggi Mi Goreng!), Mango Lassi (real let down, artificial tasting and too sour), Teh Ais kurang-manis (less-sweet)

I had ... Roti sardin (photo below), with Milo Ais

Overall, good! Best thing was the SERVICE, which was really excellent (would you believe the waiter actually remembered EXACTLY what curry I wanted, i.e. chicken curry gravy with some sambal, and graciously gave me MORE SAMBAL on a separate plate when I asked for it!).

Chef Loong desserts, SS2 PJ

After dinner, we moved on to dessert ...
Chef Loong @ 86, Jalan SS2/60, 47300 Petaling Jaya.
Tel: +603 7877 4826

Mun, Wee Tee, Dave, Rhonna, Shang et al had all these yummy desserts!

Check out that 1st photo, look closely at the YELLOW SIGN!

Lucky Tai-Chow at Section 17, PJ

Dinner with Yeong Shang ... Thursday, 7th September 2006

On the menu tonight ... Yao mak (Stir fried greens) , Xiong Tong Yuen Choy (Spinach in soupy-broth) , kung poh tin kai (Frog legs in Kung-poh sauce) , Salted-egg Prawns , Marmite Pork Ribs and House-specialty Tofu with minced pork . To wash it all down, Tiger beer, mmmmmmmmh...

Roti Pisang @ Makbul Nasi Kandar at TTDI

Makbul Nasi Kandar, Taman Tun Dr Ismail
31210 Jalan Burhanuddin Helmi, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, 60000 Kuala Lumpur

Guess who's back to visit for a week....
WELCOME HOME, YEONG SHANG!!

We started at One Utama's DELICIOUS BY MISS READ but we were too late to have dessert/have a drink there, as Shang and myself showed up at 10pm .... So we moved on to TTDI (Taman Tun Dr Ismail) .... I had Roti Pisang with curry & sambal (it was good!), and Shang had Roti Tisu (for the first time mind you, "This is cheap, 2 bucks!" - Which was quite good (I had some, and some more!), but not half as good as Raju's next to La Salle PJ!

Check out the photos of Dave and Shang talking about the universe stretching ... sort of like my waistline!

Dinner at Chow Yang, SS2

Chow Yang (aka Cheow Yang)
157 Jalan SS 2/6, 47300 Petaling Jaya

Mum and Dad had frequented the 'old Chow Yang' in SS2 many a time in the past, but thought that it had closed down. Only after I heard from a colleague (who loves to eat!) that it was still there 'in another form', went for a towering Roti Tisu at Kayu Nasi Kandar (the original location of Chow Yang), and had 'sang-hah mee' with Aunty Peng and Aunty Chin recently ... did I find out that Chow Yang was very much still alive. BUT, could it cut-it when it came to a proper dinner!? We found out tonight!

As legend has it ... "And also heard that the Nasi Kandar boss opened a shop behind the old Chow Yang. The owner of chow yang coffee shop gambled everything away even his shop. Nasi kandar was just renting from him at the back of his shop with a small stall and the people queing up just to bungkus frm him or to eat there such good business.
Then when the tauke of chow yang lost his shop the owner of the nasi kandar bought over frm him n opened the one now thats at the back of chow yang now."

Another legend, "He was betting on World Cup soccer but I am not too sure which World Cup he lost everything. Most probably 2002 as 1998 would be too long ago."

This legend does tally with my brief investigation from one of the staff members on what really happened. I managed to ask 2 questions whilst waiting nearly 20 minutes for the food ...
J = How long have you been here?
CY = 3 years now
J = Is this the original Chow Yang?
CY = The owners have moved on (Duh!?), this is now run by those who were previously employed at the original Chow Yang.

We had pork stew-thingy, chicken with ginger, stir fry siu pak-choi, and to-fu with crabmeat.
And, no further review or recommendation required, because Iron Chef Mum has endorsed...
Mum's verdict : THUMBS UP! "I'll be back!"

Jokes - Angel Chickens & Garfield

From the local papers over the past week ...
(See if you 'get' the Angel-Chicken joke, it took my dad and myself nearly TEN MINUTES!)

Monty's bath-time

Sunday, 3rd September

Restoran O&S, Paramount PJ

Where? O & S Restaurant, Corner-lot along Jalan 20/14, Paramount Gardens, Petaling Jaya
If you know where the Tops supermarket is (Formerly the old paramount cinema. The O&S coffee shop is directly opposite the Caltex Station.
What & Who? Had breakfast at this legendary joint with mum and dad this morning
When? Open 6 days a week from evening to sell out. (close on mondays)
Why? We come here at least once in 2-3 weeks, to have our 'staple' Kai-see hor-fun (Chicken kuay teow in broth RM$4), Fried Yong-Tau Foo RM$5.70, Indian Rojak RM$4, Prawn Mee (Stan's fave), Fried Kuay Teow (Yum!), Kon-Loh Mee (Dad says it is good!), Curry Mee, Assam Laksa, Popiah, Penang style Chee cheong fun, Chicken Rice, Egg Tarts and to wash it all down some Michael Jackson (oops, Soya Cincau I mean), and Goreng Pisang.

The verdict ... A mecca of food. SPLENDID!

Kaya toast & Prawn Mee at Uncle Lim's, Ikano Damansara

Tea with Yu Ye, Dau and Jared

Uncle Lim's at Mutiara Damansara
Lot LG 15 (P1)Ikano Power CentreDamansara Mutiara
Tel: +603-7725 4381

Met up with the trio at Uncle Lim's in Ikano, opposite The Curve in Mutiara, Damansara this afternoon. We tried some of the signature pieces of this establishment (one in a line of 'kopi-tiam wannabes from yesteryear!') ...

Uncle Lim's Laksa - As described by Uncle Lim, "The thick, creamy and aromatic gravy for this unique noodle dish is a concoction of de-boned mackerel, blended fresh herbal spices, suntan and milk. The noodle is actually Italian spaghetti and the taste is actually …………….mmmmm!!!" And, as described by Ye, "So so lah"

Kaya Toast & Half Boiled Egg - As described by Uncle Lim, "This humble traditional Malaysian snack is enjoyed by our forefathers in days gone by. Traditional roti slices is toasted over charcoal ember till golden brown. Electric toasters would have been convenient but we believe that the difference is well worth the extra efforts. The result is a crisp slice of toast with a soft centre. A good helping of homemade kaya is spread on one slice and premium grade Australian butter on the other slice. The result?? …………Mmmmm, just like those days,............ SYOK only!!" And, Half Boiled Eggs - "‘A’ grade omega 3 enriched eggs are scalded to perfection. Add premium grade light soya sauce and a dash of pepper and the resultant is a hot favourite among young and old. How else can one explain the continual orders of this item from our opening till our closing time". And, as described by Ye, "Egg is good, lemak!" Jules says, "Kaya toast, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmh!"

Coffee - Jules says, "Strong, good traditional taste of CONDENSED MILK, can't go wrong with that!"

Cham (Aka hybrid of COFFEE + TEA!) - Dunno what Ye said, but he had TWO, must have been good!

Soya Cincau (Aka MICHAEL JACKSON) - Love it! Better then Jenny Hung's opposite Jaya Supermarket. What's most special about Uncle Lim's soya-cincau is the fineness of the strands of cincau, which complements the soya which is not too sweet, darn good!

As a dessert (!), we had some Sister's CRISPY POPIAH (purchased from a little stall near Uncle Lim's / opposite Bread Story) ... Very nice! But pricey at RM$4.90 for the two.

Finally ... Decided to give the ol' DoggyMobile a work-out driving home ... but was nowhere as quick as that Scooby STI!

Chicken Rice in Eng Ann, Klang

Pre-lunch ;-) makan (Well, ta-pow / takeaway actually!) of Chicken Rice in Eng Ann, Klang ... I grew up on this Aunty's chicken rice, and it was a real treat at RM$4. What makes a good chicken rice meal?
  • The rice = Oily but not overly so, smooth and fragrant (7/10)
  • The chicken = The thigh was smooth, perfectly steamed, with strong hints of garlic (8/10)
  • The chilli = EXCELLENT! Sharp but complementary (9/10)
Jules Verdict = 24/30
(Well worth a try!)

ps - Aunty still remembers I was 'away' for a 'few' years, she asked "When did you return?"

Kon Loh Mee at Sua Teng, Klang

Restoran Sua Teng, Berkeley Gardens (Taman Kenari) in Klang

Breakies on 2nd Sept - RM$3.50 for kon-loh mee with minced pork, and bowl of springy fish balls and nice foo-peh, and RM$1.20 for good loh-hon-koh herbal tea.

Prawn 'Sang Hah' Mee at Chow Yang, SS2

Had lunch today with Aunty Peng and Aunty Chin in the legendary Chow Yang of SS2 in Petaling Jaya ... On the menu was vege (yum!) and sang-hah mee (good!), washed down by some excellent liong-chah (herbal tea) ...

Shah Alam & Subang - Mosque, Cop, Wira, DVDs

Look what I spotted during my drive through Subang and Shah Alam on my day off ...
Some proud Malaysians with flags on their car the day after Merdeka Day,
'Honest cops',
The new Proton Wira (Remember the advert, "DESIRE HAS A NEW NAME" Hah!),
The state Mosque in Shah Alam ..
And finally, check out those new DVDs Aunty Peng brought back for me!
